Scout Report – Aleksandar Mitrovic

On Tuesday, Newcastle completed the signing of Serbia international striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £13 million. The 20-year-old has penned a five-year contract at St James’ Park and becomes the fourth biggest transfer in the Magpies’ history.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Mitrovic reckons his style of play is perfect for the physically demanding Premier League:

“I’m aggressive, strong. I’m a goalscorer. I am a real number nine, the penalty box is my place. My position is through the middle, I’m like a striker who has played here before – from Alan Shearer to Papiss. They are big names and I hope I can make a similar impact. Alan Shearer is a real legend and one of my heroes. That and Drogba is how I like to play and it’s an honour to play at this club. I’m a physical sort of player. I like to fight and score goals.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Smederevo, Mitrovic joined the Partizan youth system in 2005 as a ten-year-old and spent the next six years honing his skills. He then made his senior debut with affiliated side Teleoptik, where he scored seven times in 25 league outings during the 2011/12 season.

In the summer of 2012, Mitrovic signed his first professional contract with Partizan, securing a four-year deal. He made 28 league appearances in the 2012/13 campaign, scoring 13 goals, which persuaded Anderlecht to pay a club-record transfer fee of €5 million for his seervices

During his first year in Belgium, Mitrovic notched 16 goals in 32 league appearances, and also registered six assists. Last season, he was even more prolific, netting 20 times in 37 league outings, while the Serbian also provided four assists, and scored two goals in five Champions League appearances, including a late equaliser in a 3-3 draw against Arsenal.

Mitrovic scored nine goals in 18 appearances for the Serbia U19 and U21 sides, and was named Player of the Tournament in the 2013 UEFA Under-19 Championships, which Serbia won. He made his senior debut against Belgium in June 2013 and currently has one goal from 13 international caps, which came in a 1-1 draw against Croatia in September 2013.

THE PROSPECTS

With Newcastle boss Steve McClaren favouring a 4-2-3-1 system so far during pre-season, it looks as if Mitrovic will be competing with Papiss Cisse for the central role up front, with fellow forwards Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere both capable of playing across the forward line. Given that McClaren utilised a 4-3-3 at Derby, he’s clearly in favour of a lone-striker system, and with rumours increasing of a move away for Cisse, it seems that the new boy could quickly barge his way to the top of the pecking order.

Discussing his latest big-money acquisition, McClaren was quick to point out that he’ll afford him time to settle, if needs be:

“I think he’ll fit right in. Players like that tend to. He has to adapt but he’s adapted everywhere he’s been. He’s only very young, he made his debut in Serbia and moved to Anderlecht so he’s already made one move and adapted to a different league so he’s got experience of that at a young age. Now he’s got to do it again, adapt to our training and the Premier League but he’s a good acquisition for the squad. He brings goals. He’s got potential and talent and I think that’s an ideal signing and profile for the football club and we want to develop him and bring him in and give him the experience and however long it takes to get him used to the Premier League.”

Given Cisse scored 11 league goals in just 22 appearances last season, he can also make a strong claim for the lone-striker role during the forthcoming campaign, should he remain on Tyneside. The issue here, of course, is the Senegal international’s propensity for picking up injuries which have severely restricted his pitch time over the last couple of seasons. With question marks over Cisse’s ability to last the distance during matches, it’s surely only a matter of time before he’s ousted as the club’s first-choice forward.

Standing six foot two-and-a-half, Mitrovic is more of a target-man type than Cisse and will offer McClaren’s side a far more robust presence up top. Looking at the stats, he won 2.4 aerial duels per match in last year’s Champions League, whilst Cisse averaged 0.9 in the Premier League.

Mitrovic joins a Newcastle side that scored a paltry 40 goals last season – a tally superior to only five other teams in the top flight. The addition of Dutch international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum should certainly boost the creativity of the side, while Siem de Jong is fully fit for the new campaign after only making four appearances last time around. With the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Jack Colback in midfield, and young Rolando Aarons sparkling in pre-season, McClaren – who is still targeting a few more signings – is looking for a top-eight finish.

From a Fantasy perspective, though, the Magpies’ opening fixtures look a real deterrent – Newcastle face six of last season’s top eight over the course of the first eight Gameweeks, including away trips to Arsenal and Manchester City.

Priced at a very reasonable 6.5, Mitrovic costs you the same as West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who has four home clashes (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks, for example. If, as expected, he ousts Cisse from the first XI, the Serbian’s opening schedule suggests we’d be best avoiding for now and allowing him time to settle before the fixtures turn far kinder around the Gameweek 9 mark.

Given that Southampton's opening 5 games are pretty easy and, with the exception of the first game, Spurs have a great early run would it be insane to fill your team with Spurs and Southampton players?

You could fit in Pelle, Mane, Cedric, Alder, Kane and Chadli pretty easily.... or is that too much of a gamble?

I don't really like Southampton's attack or Spurs' defence, regardless of fixtures. Plus, if they lose without scoring you are guaranteed 6 points from 3 players.

Thoughts on DeJong for this year (leaving aside the chances he'll most likely be injured by time GW1 comes around)? Has Wijnaldum coming in scuppered any chances of him playing no. 10?

If fit he should be a key member of the side, whether he starts No.10 or from the left.

One issue we have is that Wijnaldum, De Jong, Sissoko, Cabella and Ayoze all seem to prefer the No.10 role. I'd say Sissoko and De Jong are likely to start out wide with Wijnaldum central and Colback and Anita/Tiote behind.

Repost... Here's my latest draft... most high ownership players selected to safeguard a poor opening couple of weeks; most high profile teams selected from; some decent rotation in place and some form players in there too.

    RMT lads...

    Schmeichel / Butland
Clyne / Azpilicueta / Huth / Koscielny / Targett (or any other £4.0m defender?)
    Henderson / Hazard / Yaya / Depay / Wanyama
    Costa / Benteke / Deeney

I always like to have a big hitter in there to play every week.

      That is just my preference.

I have gone with Azpi (who will play every week), Cedric (who will play most weeks) and three 4.5m's who will rotate.

I am not saying your plan won't work though.

      It could do nicely.

You will surely have a great frontline with the money you have spent on your defence.

I know it's a case of many factors over the season but usually the people who finish say in the top ten get very high up quite early on. I'd be interested to hear if any of these people have approached the start of the season any differently from the crowd? A minor tweak maybe? An early captain risk?

I didn't get top 10, but did finish around 900.

Couldn't agree more that it's down to a good start. And by that, not GW1, but the first few months.

After that the leaders are pretty much out there, building on their lead. Chasing is incredibly difficult, and you loss-chase with punts.

Getting out in front early for me means almost certainly an early wildcard. Last year I used it in the first 4 weeks or so, once I'd seen some good trends (Saints looking good, Aguero, Austin).

I'll be doing that again. So picking a team for the first few weeks rather than season long.

Also the other big one is not to be afraid to now own high ownership players. I rarely owned Hazard or Costa while most players had a big chunk of their budget invested in those two, keeping faith, all year.

Also don't always captain the leader in the poll here! It's so often a disappointment.
Captain Austin a few times last season made a huge difference for me.

I missed out on Austin captain week 18 I think it was when he got a hatrick. Had it on him all week and switched to Sanchez 🙁 yh I also agree with the ownership thing and not being afraid to let go if you think they aren't going to be firing. Hazard wasn't needed at the start last year, costa not beyond week 10/12 and there was a period in the middle where Sanchez got 7/8 blanks in a row too.

Interestingly enough I finished 418th and did totally the opposite. Didn't have costa at all, lagging behind, saved wildcard and played and caught up heavily with it later on. I totally agree with the chasing is difficult aspect of it though. I never once thought I was ever in contention because I was always so far behind initially.

I think with the rule changes especially though, picking for the first few weeks is probably the correct approach and it may be that you don't even need to play the wildcard but knowing you have to by week 20 ish encourages an early wildcard and that approach. Thanks for the reply

Nah I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to get a good start because I'm practically always 100-250k around week 20 before finishing top 20k usually. Not sure how this year is going to go with the chips etc and therefore I'm very open to trying a slightly different approach especially at the start since I never do well anyway!

At some point of time I was firmly in the top 10, even was top o' the world for one night. What did it for me last year was early wildcarding, punting on Chadli who was showing form, punting on Baines (even captained him for a week where all the big-hitters blanked), also getting solid returns from Di Maria who I had just gotten for the gains in price at the beginning. Not selling Costa when he was potentially injured and scored a brace also helped as well as some points from Fabregas and Pele. Also unlikely heroes like Chambers helped. I built a solid total value and that killed me in the January wildcard when I made all the wrong decisions. And once more during the big DGW. But well, at least I get to tell this story.

Appreciate the response. What strikes me is your similar approach to limpar above in wildcarding early. Did you wildcard because your early selection was poor or because your early selection was tailor made for the first 3/4 game weeks and you were always going to wildcard anyway?

For me it was a very poor first week. I'm trying to remember when I wildcarded exactly. I think I spent a couple of weeks floundering, making a few transfers, and wildcarded around GW3 or 4. Which felt at the time like a despairing poker all-in - but it set me up perfectly as it happend.

So let's say u set up your team for an early wildcard and actually did really well to start off with, would u still go ahead and wildcard as planned (bearing in mind if u set up to wildcard, you may even have bench players that don't play at all) or would you think...such a great start, I don't need to wildcard and stick with the team that has started well?

              • 9 Years

usually that great start would be due to a couple of players that you would keep anyway. But the changing scenary might help you bring is someone else who will jumpstart you even further

Yeah, I think in that instance you would hang on a little longer.
But if you really have set your team up just for the first 4 weeks - you will probably find yourself staring at a team for GW5 without lots of great players with great fixtures that you don't own!

Never really plan on wildcarding. I just wasn't happy with my selection and saw opportunities that had opened up. In the end finished 600 something but had a few weeks of my friends being jelous and wondering how I had done it. But Being this high early in the season brings a lot of stress of trying to maintain it and takes away some of the fun of the game TBH

Yh fair point. I suppose if you start well and are really high up its tough deciding wether to play safe and try and stay where you are or try and risk it to get higher up/extend your gap! I'll never get into that position anyway so it probably doesn't matter lol

          If I may interject?

A big decision used to be wildcard early or wildcard late. Both had merits - early for building TV and tuning the squad after seeing actual lineups for a few weeks, late for the DGW flexibility.

The rule changes have taken that decision away unfortunately. As it stands now it seems that an early wildcard is almost obligatory. There is no better use of it really. There is a change in the fixture blocks in GW9 which can be taken advantage of but that can be achieved by a little advance planning. To keep it longer than that would really be on the basis of "I'll use it when I need it" which is no strategy at all.

If you plan to use it in the first international break you have the advantage of being able to set up the initial squad for 4 gameweeks only, safe in the knowledge that you will put your long-term squad in place before GW5 and with sufficient information to be able to do so. Transfer window closed, team lineups clearer and so on.

That does make a lot of sense. Still I don't know if I'll just set-up a team for the first 4 weeks then wildcard or just go with the flow and see what happens.

Couldn't you aim to try and retain until as late as possible with the new rules and play wildcard week 18/19 and second one around your chip use? Or would you say there is no merit in retaining it until then? Isn't there a chance a lot of things happen around week 18-23 like rotation around Xmas etc that people will rush to use their second wildcard maybe and lose out on trying to use it around a bench boost chip?

For me - strong start being so important - I would sooner use the boost early.
I remember lots on here who saved their wildcard talking up the great boost it was going to give them, and how they'd shoot up the rankings - but when they finally used it the horse had bolted.

What about using your second wildcard a week previous to a double gameweek where you use your bench boost? Might be a bit extreme but potentially 15 double gameweekers if you do this?

Yep - that would be pretty mind bending.
Although - would you be picking a balanced team for the remainder of the season in that instance? Or would you have an abnormally strong bench, and double gameweek players you'd soon rather see the back of...

I think a wildcard has to be used to set you up long-term...

It all depends on the teams that get the double gameweek I guess. Strong teams means not as much shuffling is needed. Also if four teams can have a double on week 37 somehow or thereabouts, you may not need to worry about the long term implications. I must admit though, there's quite a few if and buts around the issue and hence a lot of uncertainty.

Also thinking about it I guess this year especially you may want to ignore the leaderboard because people who play their chips early may be towards the top by a considerable distance and tables will be skewed. And unless you click on those individual teams on the week they play it, I don't think there's gonna be any other way knowing what chips have been played at any given point in a season like you can with a wildcard.

FPL won't tell us which chips are active for other players, apart from the Wildcard.

But perhaps they might tell us afterwards in the Transfer history when the chips were played. I hope they will, anyway.

I think that is certainly what many will do. Early wildcard (between GW4 and 5), late wildcard around GW33.

Personally I preferred the system as it was but GW19 is too soon for the Jan transfer window and if you use it that late you get the benefit for less long. The benefit of being able to create what is in effect a 4-week mini-season at the beginning followed by a well set up team based on this season's lineups is the biggest persuader for me.

Yh that makes sense. The counter argument would be that 4 weeks isn't long enough especially with the transfer window open until just after gameweek 4. Also, if you were to go down this route and were hoping to save that second wildcard for week 33, you're basically having a team for around 30 gameweeks with no major changes apart from you're weekly transfers. Something that no one will be used to in recent times as you would use a wildcard 20 weeks in at the latest with the Jan wildcard before.

Yes but the wildcard post GW4 runs until 12th September. Window is well closed by then. International injuries can also be adjusted for.

The 28/30 week run is a downside but I'm not going to save a wildcard just in case I get in a hole. I'll back my ability to manage a squad through whatever occurs.

Having zero non-playing makeweights in my squad will help.

I haven't decided hence my initial wuestion. I'm very open to trying something different out. If I was to approach it as I usually do it'll be a balanced team with all players in the first team or players that I believe have a very good chance of making their first XI's. However, as pointed out, with the chips this year and the timings of the wildcards, this isn't a 'usual' year and therefore approaches may need to be tweaked accordingly.

It's actually quite hard to ignore your 'season long picks' in creating that first-4-weeks team.

There is also an added Brucey bonus if you're playing in a manager of the month league.

              In 2015-16, there are 10 fixture blocks of varying length. They take place in game-weeks 1-2, 3-6, 7-8, 9-13, 14-17, 18-25, 26-27, 28-32, 33-34 and 35-38.

For example, in fixture block 18-25, all teams that are at home in GW18 will also be at home in GWs 21, 22 and 25 and away in GWs 19, 20, 23 and 24.

Knowing this can help with rotation planning.

1700 OR finish last year. Kept the WC until double GW's in the final parts of the season.
The thing that helpded me launch up from the beginning was the 8-0 saitns sunderland game with Tadic, and simultaneous Aguero (C) with 4-0 against spurs.

Then it was all about maintaining momentum. Weeks like that (or WC's that can cause that effect) are what separates an average season from a good season.

Aguero capt vs spurs was what saved me early on after not owning costa at all. I was up and down a lot around the same area (I think 6k in gameweek 15 and found myself 6k gameweek 32 too). Wildcard and double gameweeks then propelled me for my late boost. I want to try and retain that late boost but get an nice early start to maybe allow for that additional push. I've ALWAYS been a slow starter

I had a cracking start - being in the know about Siggy (at Man U) helped. Was 2nd with about 6 weeks to go but my lack of Kun did for me in the end.

I think I put in a WC around GW9 or so (one of the international breaks) and it paid off well. As Ruth says GW4 is now looking ideal for a rejig and go for a 4 game sprint first up with a side tailored to fixtures...

If you are going for that approach and tailoring your side for the first 4 weeks, would u 'risk' it and therefore maybe go for a couple of non playing players until you wildcard in gameweek 4? Or would you not just incase you change your mind and end up maybe not wildcarding in week 4? Would u allow yourself that flexibility or is it worth the risk to get a better initial starting XI team knowing that you will definitely wildcard in week 4?

To be honest I just looked and other than Southampton most fixtures for teams look fairly similar in terms of strength (which I'd not factored). In which case I think I will now likely pick a long term side and go to the WC if things are not panning out for one reason or another...

I have never been top 10 (I was top 50 after GW8 last year, but fell away thereafter).

I had a plan at the start of the season to play my WC after the second international break, because that's where I saw the most benefit in terms of fixture upturns. Even though I was in the top 1000 the gameweek before, I stuck to the plan and got over 100 pts for the first time in a single gameweek.

I see the second intl break as another good time to play the WC (just based on fixtures); every season is different but I will try and do the same again.

      Don't over think things.
Do your own research, don't just rely on articles or others opinions.
Follow your own ideas. Sure, take ideas from others and get opinions, but ultimately it's your team, do what you want and don't be afraid to take risks.

Getting into the top 10 is an achievement, staying there is a bigger one. And be lucky... that plays a big part!

I believe it's very similar to the normal championships. If you have a strong team base and if you can catch the in form players at the right time then you'll be in the wagon. For instance, I bought Kane as early as GW 8 i guess and it helped me a lot.

Well till before I stupidly sold him afterwards!!!!

i've been set on Mata for ages, but this Pedro rumour is getting louder and louder.

Van Gaal likes to play 4-3-3, he can play different systems but in the end prefers 4-3-3. Pedro wouldn't join to sit on the bench of a lesser team, so yes I think Mata's place on the right is under threat. I trust Van Gaal to play Mata in the hole, with Depay on the left. That would give something like

      DDG
      Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
      Schweinsteiger Schneiderlin
      Pedro Mata Depay
      Rooney

Then again, you never know with Louis. He might play Fellaini in the hole. Pedro's arrival almost certainly means Di Maria is a goner which could mean he might continue to buy new players.

If it happened (which I think we need to wait and see before getting worried) then we could see a swap from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1

      -------------Roo

      Depay---Mata---Pedro

      ----Schneid---Herrera

(Both Schneid and Ander can rotate with Schweinie)

But if it does happen, and they stick to 4-3-3, Mata and all the other United mids are a no go for me.

First, I would try to get attest .5 ITb for flexibility
not to keen on taking both sterling and depay as they are both playing in a new team.
Also whats your plan with Aguero
      ?
      7/10

What would be your Team with 2-5-3 formation in GW1 with WC on GW2?
Not going to play it but it's quite entertaining shuffling the players that way 🙂

what about bony? even when agüero is fit, might he prove some value? seems dzeko and jovetic will leave, does this mean more starts for him?

If he's fully fit, although I'm not convinced he has a long term future at City.

Please RMT (I am set on a 4-4-2):
    Panti (Schwarzer)
    Ivan Kos Fonte Huth/Oshea
    Silva Fab Ozil Milner (Fletcher)
    Costa Lukaku Ighalo

    .5 ITB for flexibility
GW 3/4: Lukaku to Sakho/Wilson to allow Aguero
Im not keen on hazard from the start, might downgrade Ivan to allow silva to Haz if necessary
    Any Suggestions?

Lads, who's the better option for in goal in your opinion?

I know that people often do Rate my Teams, and its cool to get feedback from different sources, but I wondered if there was some sort of way we could pool some information together, by which we could compare our team drafts, any thoughts?

I like the reliability of Cazorla. He can assist, he can score free kicks, pens and sometimes from open play.
