Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – International Round Up

Sergio Aguero scores twice and provides three assists as Argentina thrash Bolivia. Mesut Ozil recovers from illness to turn out for Germany, Anthony Martial is handed his senior debut for France, whilst Gareth McAuley bags a brace for Northern Ireland.

Aguero Runs Riot against Bolivia

Sergio Aguero played a part in five of Argentina’s goals in a 7-0 home win over Bolivia last night. The City striker scored twice and laid on three assists before being replaced on 80 minutes. Everton new boy Ramiro Funes Mori played from start to finish in the heart of defence, keeping the likes of United’s Marcos Rojo, along with City pair Martin Demichelis and Nicholas Otamendi, on the bench.

The Scout Says: Having struggled for form in the opening four Gameweeks, Aguero’s display suggests he’s building up his match sharpness over the international break after returning to training later due to his Copa America exertions. A disappointing blank at home to Watford last time out took his tally to one league goal so far and has persuaded over 15,000 FPL managers to sell the 13.2-priced frontman since the end of Gameweek 4, but last night’s showing suggests they could regret that decision. Still sitting in over 32% of sides, there’s plenty of reason for optimism once he returns to domestic action, as the league leaders prepare for a superb run of opponents (cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, BOU, mun, NOR, avl) in the next eight Gameweeks.

Martial Handed Les Bleus Debut

Anthony Martial’s week to remember continued last night after the United new boy earned his debut during France’s 1-0 win over Portugal. Martial was initially named amongst the subs but replaced Karim Benzema up front with 16 minutes remaining.

The Scout Says: Whilst he failed to get in the goals, last night’s step up in status will surely be a confidence boost for the youngster ahead of his debut for the Old Trafford outfit. Didier Deschamps is clearly a big fan, calling him “a huge talent” and now looks set to integrate the youngster into the France senior squad ahead of next year’s Euro 2016. The French now host Serbia on Monday evening and Martial could even be poised for a first start as he looks to stake a claim for a starting berth for the Red Devils ahead of next weekend’s home encounter with bitter rivals Liverpool.

Ozil Back in Action

Having missed Arsenal’s Gameweek 4 trip to Newcastle, Mesut Ozil recovered from illness to play the full 90 minutes in Germany’s 3-1 win over Poland last night.

The Scout Says: The playmaker’s return is good news for the Gunners, who have yet to fully fire in the first four Gameweeks. Arsene Wenger’s side have managed just three goals, with Ozil earning an assist, though one look at the underlying stats indicates they’ve been more than unlucky – Arsenal lead the way for shots (83) and efforts inside the box (56) but have found the net with just 3.6% of their chances. Ozil has been sold by over 43,000 FPL managers since missing out at St James’ but now looks set to return to the first-team fold ahead of a mixed schedule which pits the north London club against Stoke, Chelsea, Leicester and United in the next four rounds of fixtures.

McAuley Double Earns Ireland the Points

Gareth McAuley bagged a brace for Northern Island as they moved to the top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group courtesy of a 3-1 away win over the Faroe Islands. West Bromwich Albion team-mate Chris Brunt turned provider for McAuley’s second header of the night.

The Scout Says: McAuley’s brace arrives at a time where the Baggies are prepared for a strong run of fixtures (SOU, avl, EVE, cry, SUN, nor, LEI) in the upcoming Gameweeks. Owing to injuries and rotation, predicting the exact composition of Tony Pulis’ backline has been a futile endeavour so far this season. Craig Dawson (5.0) has been the only ever-present among their full roster of defenders, starting the season at centre-back, before shifting over to right-back to replace James Chester. Brunt, who recovered from a hamstring problem in time for last night’s match, looks set to claim control of the left-back berth with Joleon Lescott out of the picture, which leaves two centre-back slots up for grabs. McAuley and Jonas Olsson have partnered up for the West Midlanders’ previous three match-ups yet the arrival of Jonny Evans (4.8) looks bad news for the latter, given that McAuley has been selected for every league match he’s been available for by Pulis. Although West Brom have shipped six goals in their last two home ties – albeit against Chelsea and Manchester City – two clean sheets in the last three suggests they are rediscovering the resilience that served up 16 shut-outs in the season gone by.

Long in the Goals

Shane Long nodded home the final goal as the Republic of Ireland recorded a 4-0 win over Gibraltar, having replaced man of the match Robbie Keane at the 71-minute mark.

The Scout Says: It’s been a tough start domestically for the Southampton striker, who has been named in the first XI in only one of the opening four Gameweeks. With Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane excelling on the flanks in a 4-2-3-1 set-up against Norwich last time out, and lone striker Graziano Pelle also netting against the Canaries, Long looks unlikely to break into Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up anytime soon. A testing run of upcoming matches (wba, MUN, SWA, che) is likely to deter most from considering the Saints’ regulars, though potential suitors may wish to revaluate Southampton’s main men from Gameweek 9 onwards, with a view to capitalise on a favourable run of matches (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO) thereafter.

With cheap strikers and mid prifed midfielders aplenty its eaay to field an attacking 8. I might uograde my 5th midfielder to De Bruyne and then have the flexibility to play any of my front 8. Not too worried about "benching headaches" at this stage

Im thinking of swap benteke for gomis. And then swap westwood for Sako next week to get both Swa and cpl cover. Already got Gomez for liv cover.

But is it worth to get rid of benteke for these two? Or is it just mather of time for benteke to score some goals?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Do internationals matter anymore?

Given the importance of club football, especially in England, does international football matter anymore?

Did you used to get excited by international games? Are you still excited? Or are there no longer any surprises left in the international game? Will England stick to the script of beating minnows in qualifiers then falling short at tournaments for the foreseeable future?

I honestly feel like Fantasy Football has reduced my interest in internationals. Along with the lack of enthusiasm from england players, of course

It might not matter to some people in certain countries but it matters a lot more to other people in other countries. If there were no internationals Football would entirely become the domain of Europe/UK and South America. The rest of the world will lose interest.

In Poland international football is extremely important. Given the poor level of the Polish League people are always looking forward to watch the national team in action. That's no suprise as all of our best players (Lewandowski, Fabiański, Piszczek, Krychowiak etc.) play in the top European leagues.
There are still plenty of suprises each International break, such as Iceland winning in Amsterdam this time, or Germany being defeated by Poland for the first time in the history. England, even with their great potential, will most probably fail at early stages of Euro 2016.

As an Arsenal fan and somebody who's not particularly nationalistic I watch occasional internationals hoping Arsenal's players do well and don't get injured.

From the players' perspective I can see why so many pick up phantom injuries right before a break. In top tier European football there's too much money floating around for many to be willing to take the risk getting injured while playing for a team who aren't their main employers.

Of course they matter most soccer fans i know only love to get behind there national side.

Whats more important than representing your people and nation.

I must say being Irish my head was down about it until i saw Scotland lose to Georgie giving us a fighting chance again

It is also important as to where i will be going on my holidays next year France hopefully

Ya i think England will fail when they get there way too much pressure from the media over there

England have a great pool of players but only seem to pick team from about 4 or 5 clubs in the league and when u see some of the players they leave behind or don't even give a sniff to it shows the FA don't show much imagination they play Gerrard for years as a main man a ordinary player at best never giving the likes of Carrak or even Scholes much of a chance says it all really and if they tried something else besides Gerrard back then well the English press would have been all over them like a rash

Gerrard was a far better player than Carrick, although there did seem to be a problem in getting Gerrard and Lampard to perform well together in the same team.

Scholes retired from international football. England managers would have loved him to have expended his international career, but he chose not to.

England bent over backwards to be fair to John Terry despite his character defects, because he was our best defender and a good captain.
When he cheated with his team-mate's ex, they dropped Wayne Bridge instead.
When he was involved in a racist abuse incident with Anton Ferdinand, they postponed his case and took him to the World Cup, then made Luis Suarez the scapegoat instead over a far less serious incident.
The FA took away Terry's England captaincy over one of these incidents, but later restored it to him.
When the FA belatedly punished Terry for the racist incident, he went off in a huff and refused to play for England again.

It matters to us in Sweden since our national league is of a pretty crappy standard, except Malmö FF of course. 🙂 Although we have not had any real success in international football since 1994, which was a year to remember when it comes to Sweden's national team.

I still get excited by international tournaments, for sure. And watching Wales qualify for the Euros has been exciting stuff, and I'm not even remotely Welsh (maybe a great-great-great-ancestor or something maybe).

But yes, certainly some international games can be a drag. Watching Australia hammer Bangladesh 5-0, what's the point? Bangladesh should be in their own pool with other footballing minnows, with the winner of that pool getting the chance to qualify by versing the big guns.

But to answer your first question, yees international still matter in the context that people in our fantasy teams are playing in them and there's the risk of them getting injured!

I think international friendlies are worthless but I love the world cup and euros.

Never been much bothered by England, they have been boring for most of my football experience. I am part Italian so tend to follow them.

Roberto Baggios skied penalty in 94 and the world cup win in 06 are great memories.

I would rather not sit through a borefest of Andros Townsend and Danny Welbeck against part time minnows however.

I've been in love with international football, especially WC and Euro finals.. ever since Spain 82 and France 84.

Tardelli, Zoff, Lato, Matthaus, Socrates, Zico, Falcoa, Blokhin, Platini, Maradona, Enzo Scifo, Laudrop, Tigana, Hagi, Butragueno, Rummenigge

These days FIFA and UEFA should recognize the importance of the CL and national leagues and the number of international breaks should be lessened.

San Marino, Gibraltar, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein etc. etc. they should all go into a pre-qualifying group that is completed in the autumn.

The question itself sounds very british to me.
In England: the league is very strong and the national team irregular if not weak => no interest
Anywhere else: massive interest every 2-4 years (WC/Euro)
Everywhere, among and outside football fans: no interest in friendlies & qualifiers.

      It just depends.

I am Australian and the national team playing is what got me into football and I get exciting watching them play. The Australian team is made up of players who play in: England (PL, Championship and even League 1), Belgium, Spain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Japan, South Korea, China, Scotland, Turkey, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands and of course in the A-League. Its always good to see the players abck together because we mostly don't see them play regularly.

From the outside looking in there seems to be a lot of disillusionment and tribalism tat negatively affects the support and interest in the English team.

I still think Internationals matter. Especially in Japan.

But whether a friendly game matters or not is a different issue. I think it largely depends on several factors such as the significance of the game, (lack of?) quality from the domestic league, and being able to see your stars that have performed overseas come back and fight for your country.

I have gotten accustomed to several disappointing defeats at the international stages that I do not get too excited by international games anymore. But the games always brought drama and surprises. Every success felt like we can achieve something at a major tournament.

On a WC and after some top advice on this site over the past week I'm looking at a team like this

    Butland McCarthy
    Kolorov Gomez Naughton Ward Francis
    Pedro Sanchez Mahrez Silva Sinclair/Westwood
    Kun Wilson Gomis

One or two decisions still to be made and would love some feedback fine people.

    1. Is Sinclair worth the extra 0.4m as a 5th mid?
    2. Downgrade Silva to Yaya/Sterling to use cash on DF?
    3. Ayew & Kone in for Gomis & Sinclair/Westwood?

    Thoughts?

Sinclair's too much of a rotation risk. He'll likely start for new after scoring a few, but It's possible that when you actually need him he either won't play or more likely will come off the bench.

That's true. I guess it isn't out of the question to need the extra 0.2 if choosing between the two. But for those already with Silva, the only reason to switch would be if they change his role to accommodate KDB.

My team without AOA would be:

          Huth--Kolorov -- Martin
          Chadli--Ozil--Silva--Payet--Ayew
          ---Aguero--Wilson--------------

My team with AOA would be:

          Kolorov --- Martin
          Chadli--Ozil--Silva--Payet--Ayew
          ---Aguero--Benteke--Wilson

Still think AOA is a decent shout?

Damn I thought it was Muniesa. Huth actually has a decent fixture. Not sure anymore, but would probably play it. No point in saving it and Benteke isn't the worst 8th attacker 😀

I would probs start Huth over Martin , but little in it I suppose.

Guess it boils down to Benteke then , if you think he blanks play A .
I think he has a fair chance of hitting the board this gw so would go AOA
