Moving Target

Moving Target – Glenn Murray

With just hours left before the transfer window closed, Bournemouth boosted their attacking options with the signing of Glenn Murray from Crystal Palace. The 31-year-old joined the Cherries for £4 million, and has penned a three-year deal at the Vitality Stadium.

Speaking about the addition of Murray, manager Eddie Howe believes the striker will add a different dimension to Bournemouth’s forward line, and will provide much needed competition up front:

“He is very good with crosses, very good aerially and a real goal threat. Glenn is an out-and-out number nine. He thrives on being in the box and scoring goals and does it very well. His record in terms of goals to games is second to none. You need more than one number nine and we need competition for places in all areas of the squad. I felt we were a little light in terms of options in our frontline. Glenn adds several options in terms of partnerships and what we want to do in that area of the pitch. In this league, you need goals from more than just one player and we are delighted to bring him in.”

THE HISTORY

Murray began his professional career back in 2002 for non-league side Workington Reds, before spending a season with North Carolina in the USL Professional League, where he scored three goals in 14 appearances. The forward then returned to the UK and joined Barrow, before moving onto Carlisle, where he was part of two promotion-winning sides, although he only managed to score five times in 46 appearances.

A loan spell at Stockport County was followed by another loan, this time to Rochdale, where Murray scored 16 goals in 31 appearances during the 2006/07 season, ultimately earning himself a permanent move to Spotland. The striker scored nine league goals in 23 league outings in the first half of the 2007/08 campaign, and the-then League One outfit Brighton swooped to sign Murray for a reported fee of £300,000 in January 2008.

Murray spent the next three-and-a half-years with the Seagulls, and scored 45 goals in 97 appearances, playing a huge part in the League One title winning campaign in 2010/11. Having rejected the offer of a new contract, the front man joined Brighton’s fierce rivals Crystal Palace in the summer of 2011 on a free transfer.

His most prolific season at Selhurst Park came in the 2012/13 campaign, where he netted 30 times in 43 appearances, as the Eagles secured promotion to the Premier League after beating Watford 1-0 in the play-off final, although Murray missed out on the showpiece occasion at Wembley after suffering a serious knee injury against his former side Brighton in the play-off semi-final. That injury meant he missed a large chunk of the 2013/14 season, only scoring one goal in 14 outings in the top flight. Murray was sent out on loan to Championship side Reading for the first half of the 2014/15 season by Neil Warnock, but was brought back by new Palace boss Alan Pardew, and scored seven goals in 15 appearances as the Eagles finished 10th in the Premier League.

THE PROSPECTS

On the back of Murray’s impressive form at the end of last season, the 31-year-old will arrive at the south coast outfit expecting to be a regular starter under Howe, though with Callum Wilson hitting the ground running in the top flight, scoring four goals in his last two matches, it remains to be seen how the young boss utilises the pair.

Howe broadly favours a 4-4-1-1 system, so the more experienced Murray should be able to fulfill the “number ten” role behind Wilson, although his quotes do suggest he sees the former Crystal Palace man as an out-and-out striker. With wide man Max Gradel ruled out for around six months with a knee injury, the slightly more disciplined Marc Pugh could perhaps come in on the left, allowing Howe to go for a more rigid 4-4-2, with Murray playing alongside Wilson.

Certainly, with Yann Kermorgant barely featuring in the Premier League so far, and Lee Tomlin and Joshua King more suited to the role of support striker, there doesn’t appear to be too much competition for the forward spots if the Cherries boss utilises a two-man frontline. It may well be that Howe will turn to Murray’s aerial ability, allied with Wilson’s pace and movement on the shoulder of the last defenders, as his preferred partnership in the final third.

Coming in at 5.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Murray certainly appears favourably priced, although with Wilson valued at 5.7, the former Coventry man looks the better option at this stage, having established himself as the number one option at Dean Court. Nonetheless, Murray is well-known for his ability from spot-kicks and it’s worth monitoring whether he can manage to usurp Wilson in the penalty pecking order.

Bournemouth’s favourable start to the season continues over the next four Gameweeks (nor, SUN, sto, WAT), but with Wilson having an ownership of 20% in FPL, Murray is perhaps unlikely to attract much investment initially. From Gameweek 9 onwards, the fixture list looks much trickier for the Cherries, so it may only be until the second half of the season, when we’ve had chance to assess where Murray will fit in at Bournemouth, and judge whether he’s a better option than Wilson, where we see the well-travelled striker truly come onto the radar of Fantasy managers as a potential budget option.

    Best 4.5 bench fodder defender?

Francis is popular but Bournmouth wont keep many clean sheets imo

Watford look to be set up quite defensive.

    Anyone else?

I might be alone here but when it comes to defender bench fodder, I prefer players who play for defensively weaker teams, but who have an attacking threat themselves.

That way, I don't end up with too many points on the bench, but when I need him, there's every chance of an assist/baps if licky, and for me Francis fits the bill perfectly. So does Huth for that matter.

That been said I've yet to get any of Francis points so far this season as has always remained on the bench. But there is hope.

Boyd last season was glorious mid bench fodder. Always seemed to come into the team in the weeks he gots his goals.

That's interesting but it sounds like more of a coping mechanism.

Worrying about points on the bench isn't a rational concern. You don't intend to play them so whatever they score isn't relevant, certainly nothing to feel unlucky about as they didn't factor in your decision making process.

The only requirement is that they have the best chance of returning points on any given occasion you need to play them. In that respect, a CS is usually more likely than attacking returns, especially with a cheap defender.

I'd treat it the same as any other pick.

Had a similar convo with some of the guys last night....consensus was that there is some real value in the Watford defence.

I'm quite tempted by Muniesa myself due to fixtures, but do we really see them keeping clean sheets

All looks a bit gimmicky at the mo - (customise your own touchline manager character & see them and other managers on the touchline - really?!) Hope they sort out international management as that's pants currently on FM

I think they're trying to appeal to the younger market a little more with a few 'cool' features and shorter game modes.

I haven't played the game, so I don't know, but I've heard people complaining that they have most of their whole squad out for long term all the time, never come even close to having a full first team, and it happens every time they play it. I don't know if it's something they do wrong, or if they're just horrible whiners, but if it's true and not their own fault then it's more than a bit unfair to say that it's less than in real football.

Ok. I thought it was a joke of some kind, but didn't remember that Liverpool actually had that many injuries last season. Maybe they didn't and maybe that's your point.

Just thinking that I could as well buy the FM2015 on discount, but am put off by the injury nightmare feature that more than a few players have reported. I've understood that at least some of these are long time FM players, so they should be able to compare to earlier versions. I don't think I've had unrealistically few injuries in earlier versions I have played.

I have noticed some Wilson owners worrying about how Murray will effect his game time, but I actually think Wilson will benefit from this. A big player who can hold the ball up and a pacey player who can get in behind the defense and play off of him. For me, this is the perfect combination like Michael Owen and Emile Heskey for Liverpool. IMO this is exactly what Wilson needed.

Can someone please explain to me why they have United attackers? There's seriously no good reason for wanting to keep them in their squads. Since this is a community to help each other out, I'd advise against those players until you see a change in the style of play. If united are not even creating chances, how can you expect to see big return, especially when you are spending between 8 to 10.5 mil on a united attacker.

I own mata and I'm happy to keep as he's been providing some points and still on his share of set pieces (maybe even pens). I like him as a player and I think he's one of the best mids in prem (the reason I started the season with him) plus he finally found a place in lvg's team last season. His stats look decent up to now which is more reason to hold, esp shots in box. Of course I can transfer him out if depay ever hits explosive form or for someone like pedro without too much problems. Can't really defend any of their other attackers though i'm keen on seeing what part fellaini may play

      1. Fanta sea
        • 8 Years

It's true that mata has been the only real spark in united's attack but you can do alot better than mata for the 8.5 mil that you are paying for him. If you're paying around 8.5 mil for a player, then you should expect around 7-10 points a game.

There are better players on the market that you can get. The extra 1 mil for pedro is a good choice in my opinion. So is downgrading to Ayew.

  24. Captain Peacock

Didn't realise the article had changed.

I was regretting my decision to get Sako over Ayew, until I read the Say What article for this week. Pardew practically said he's going to drop one of Zaha/Bolasie for Sako, while Ayew talked about the need to feed Gomis the ball as much as possible.

Gomis and Sako look like the ones to have from those clubs.

Disagree with gomis. Ayew is the player to have in the Swasea Attack. He will get more points over the course of the season, Stats backs this up. Gomis Stats is poor for a striker - but he does shoot on target well - you only need one shot as a 'good' striker to score. But over the seaon, Ayew will be outstanding as he is a midfielder who more or less plays as a second striker and in FPL - this is gold.

I agree wholeheartly with Sako. Im waiting for Stoke run of good fixtures to be over then I'm getting Sako in for Shaqiri

Is attacking rotation a viable option this season?

Standard practice is to have a super cheap bench midfielder (or attacker if playing 3-5-2) but this season the new bonus pt system seems designed to favour midfielders and defenders more than strikers. Is now the time to downgrade one of the heavy hitters in your team in order to be able to field a strong 5th mid/3rd striker/4th def according to fixtures?

This might mean downgrading Hazard to Pedro or Sanchez to Ramsey in order to play Sako or Mahrez as a 5th mid or Wilson as a 3rd striker.

This gives added flexibility but also leads to benching problems. Benching pts, while annoying, is not necessarily bad news as it has the benefit of often increasing team value. Non-playing 5th midfielders will never increase in value.

    Thougts?

I've tended to do this for the exact reasons you say. I don't think points on bench are really a problem. It is the lack of the points on field that is.

Is captain choice is becoming a lottery ?

All obvious captain candidates have been failure so far, week in week out.

Don't see how a Stoke defender is going to score 4, but okay. Was thinking 6 with some baps.

I think it's just a sign that the big hitters weren't hitting their usual form yet, surely it's only a matter of time.

      Who do you fancy LR?

I'm torn between Aguero & Mahrez. Probably going with Mahrez

It's a lottery every week. We're only four games in, and the big hitters haven't done it so far. Over the season, picking the obvious choices will easily give you the most points, unless you have a crystal ball.
