The Digest – Gameweek 8

Southampton’s display at Stamford Bridge serves notice of their potential ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez’ simultaneous return to form turns the Fantasy landscape on its head.

The Player

A five-goal blitz in just 20 minutes against Newcastle last Saturday served a telling reminder of Sergio Aguero’s talents as the Argentine cast aside his early-season toils emphatically.

There’s no doubt that Aguero had tested our collective patience. At a time where many mid-price frontman were flourishing, the City striker’s single goal and assist over the first seven Gameweeks were a major concern.

You only had to look at the underlying stats for reassurance, though. Between Gameweek 1-7, he was firing an effort every 19.7 minutes – almost on a par with last year’s 17.9 minutes per shot. Even his frequency of key passes (82.2 minutes compared to 80.1) was more or less identical.

Whereas last term, he netted 17.6% of his efforts on his way to 26 goals and ten assists, Aguero had scored just 4% of his shots before Steve McClaren’s boys paid visit last weekend, spurning all but one of his previous 25 attempts.

There were hints this was coming, though. Three goals and four assists over the previous international break for Argentina. Eight attempts and a late winner in City’s midweek Champions League win in Wolfsburg. Aguero was getting the chances.

In a season that’s proven unpredictable, Saturday’s 50-point armband haul shows just why Aguero is the one real must-have frontman for most Fantasy managers around these parts. With Bournemouth, Norwich and Villa in the next four Gameweeks alone, the bandwagon is in full flow as those who’d braved the Magpies match without him scramble for a belated piece of the action.

The Team

A 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Bridge heaped further pressure on Jose Mourinho as the Saints moved into the top half of the table for the first time this term.

After a slow start, blighted by a number of first-team departures over the summer, Ronald Koeman’s side have finally settled into their groove. The St Mary’s outfit have racked up eight goals in the last three matches, which also includes clashes with Swansea and Man United, and look well-stocked with form options to consider. Impressively, Graziano Pelle has played a part in ten (five goals, five assists) of their 13 goals for the season, whilst Sadio Mane’s two goals and five assists in four starts perhaps gives him the edge over Dusan Tadic in the centre of the park.

At the back, the return of Ryan Bertrand and addition of Virgil van Dijk has helped Koeman’s men rediscover the resilience which saw them concede just 33 times last term. Aside from their 3-2 reverse at home to United in Gameweek 6, Southampton have conceded a combined total of two goals in five of the last six Gameweeks – both came from dead-ball situations, a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty and Willian free-kick.

Encouragingly, the about-turn in form arrives at a time when the fixtures smile very kindly on the Saints. Over the next eight Gameweeks, Koeman’s side are afforded four eye-catching home clashes (LEI, BOU, STO, AVL) and also travel to Sunderland and Palace. Investment at both ends of the pitch could well pay off, then, as they look build momentum on the back of their Chelsea destruction.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s return to scoring form arrives at a time where Alexis Sanchez has also banished his own barren run to rack up the goals for Arsenal. The Chilean followed up last week’s hat-trick at Leicester with a brace against United to soar up the Fantasy standings after a similarly sluggish start to 2015/16.

Taking the midweek Champions League matches into consideration, the South American duo have scored six times apiece in their last three appearances. Few, if any, top-flight talents can match that explosive potential and it’s fair to say that their recent resurgence has shaken up the Fantasy landscape.

Those who filled their 15-man squads with mid-price and budget form players, thus choosing to ignore one or both of Aguero and Sanchez, now face a major restructuring program if they are to bring the pair on board. Indeed, it’s no real surprise that the duo lead the way for transfers-in this week in the FPL game.

In this most unpredictable of seasons, there’s a reassuring sense of normality settling in once again. Those who have steadfastly held onto both and kept faith in the underlying numbers have been finally rewarded – it’s perhaps no coincidence that this recent turnaround has helped the Fantasy Football Scout leagues climb the leaderboards, an indication of our community’s faith in the big hitters.

Yes, it’s a belated victory for the so-called “template” approach. A triumph that’s been somewhat tainted by those preceding weeks of frustration and uncertainty but we’ll take it anyway. After suffering for the first two months, you could almost say we deserve it.

    Underachieving and overpriced 🙁

    Kolarov, Azpil, Skrtel

I want to get KDB in for Yaya but it would be daft to sell Kolarov or Azpil right now so Skrtel must go but I would only have 4.1m to replace him.

I guess the sensible thing would be to stick with Yaya and just sell Skrtel right? Especially as it would need a hit

is too early to suggest that De Bruyne may end up as the top points scorer this year?

8.8 points per game so far, the highest at the moment. Aguero comes in at 5.5 & Sanchez at 6.6.

Making me consider captaining De Bruyne instead of Aguero again this GW. Did it last week and it didn't work out, but it wasn't too bad.

I've said since the end of last year that the top 2 points scorers will be Aguero and Sanchez, and I'm sticking to it! De Bruyne is excellent, but it's still a very small sample size - he won't maintain nearly 9ppg.

It's just interesting that this is the start of his City career. Admittedly he's been in the Prem before, but usually players take a bit of time to adjust to a new squad. He's definitely hit the ground running, I honestly think he could outscore Aguero (points) this year. Big shout, but there it is.

I think he was only brought on for cameos 5 times in the league last season and finished with a combined ppg of 4.2 (including cameos).

It is a while since I looked at this though so I might be slightly out with the figures. iirc it was 16 starts and 5 sub appearances.

A caveat to my post above is that Clichy was injured or he was injured for spells so there wasn't really the option of him coming on or off. There was only 9 games where he was not used when he was on the bench (so 5 times out of the 14 times he was available he was brought on).

22 starts 8 sub appearances the year before and 7 times on the bench and not used.

Stats discussion alert!!! Because I feel I need to dispute the claim that Aguero's - and Sánchez's - recent turn of form was anywhere near being predictable. Both players weren't putting in enough SoT to justify their high prices. Two weeks later and they've now both scored from their last 5 shots on target. This is not just a case of reversion to mean, but is itself a statistical anomaly. The sellers or non-owners were brutally punished but it's hard to see, other than in hindsight, how they had adopted an irrational position. On the contrary, it was rational but horribly unlucky.

Not going to disagree with that. Arguably it's one key reason why I stuck the armband on Aguero - who is still only the 5th highest scoring forward this season.

The point I would make is that, while they've improved their stats, the FPL impact has been huge because none of the goalkeepers involved saved any of the shots. On a different occasion, they'd have 3 goals between them and there'd be no talk of "essential" and plenty of talk of "too expensive"

I disagree with the premise of SoT being the key stat. There aren't enough shots on target in general for it to be a reliable stat in itself, the sample size is far too small. A combination of SiB, touches in the box and SoT would give a better indication.

I see the problem with it being too small a number though this is frequently caused by using only four weeks of data. But I've yet to find a better method and while lots of small numbers does indeed make a bigger number, I have yet to be convinced that it's a better indicator of goals. In these two case, our problem is that the latter data is an even smaller sample

This is why you need more than 1 stat to inform your decision. A combination of small data sets and an understanding of team form and fixtures should all help to give a better well rounded understanding.

100% agreed here. Plus, from a small sample, you shouldn't simply suppose that the players ability is the determining factor, i.e. if a player gets a lot of shots over a couple of matches but doesn't hit the target, it probably is _not_ because all of the sudden he has forgotten how to shoot.

You get the stats all wrong. When put in small enough samples, stats are full of events that individually look anomalous. If you throw a coin 100 times, it's likely going to produce rows of 5-7 tails or heads. It is only in the long run that a statistical prediction works. That's why you need patience if you go by stats. Aguero and Sanchez are doing exactly what was expected: normalising their stats. All you needed was patience.

Thank you. I assume you understood this, but for clarity: those 100 coin throws are likely to produce about 50 tails and 50 heads, but it is extremely likely that in those 100 throws there are up to 7 throws long individual series of tails or heads. It is only over the long series of throws that the stats normalise to that 50/50 distribution.

Shots on target are a good correlation with goals simply because a goal IS a shot on target.

However to predict future goals, shots in the box are king IMO. This is because a shot on target doesn't correlate well with future shots being on target over a small sample size. Shots in the box do correlate very well with future shots in the box.

Long story short, Sanchez was very much predictable imo. Aguero not so much as he was below last season in all respects. But we all know his quality and teammates.

You say they are not reverting to mean but the only way this can happen is by hitting higher conversion rates than normal in order to make up for the lower conversion rates than normal which they had previously.

If they are to finish with a conversion rate of circa 15-20% then of course they will have to hit periods where they convert statistically higher than normal. Whether this can be predicted is another question altogether but you know if you hold these players long enough they are of sufficient quality to hit a high conversion rate over a season so it was a case of hold and wait for them to payback rather than kneejerk away from them just because their conversion rates were low.

    Aguero, Vardy, Berahino

    Rudd, Huth, Targett, Benteleb

    Any pressing issues here?

Bought in Berahino last week whick turned out to be horrible, but with Sunderland at home this week, i feel like he gets another week to prove himself. Same with Evans if he is fit.

Moving Ruddy on may well be the best move unless something major happens over the break. Best option though? Krul?

The Dutch FA confirm that Newcastle's Daryl Janmaat has withdrawn from their squad ahead of two European Championship qualifiers in the coming days.

The Magpies full back suffered a knee injury during Saturday's defeat at Manchester City - it's yet be confirmed how severe the problem is.

Janmaat's return means that Steve McClaren has five first team squad members on international duty - three with Holland and one each with France and Serbia.

There was no place for Cheick Tiote in the latest Ivory Coast squad, Papiss Cisse was similarly overlooked by Senegal and DR Congo omitted Chancel Mbemba.

Was close to doing Lovren > Janmaat early to avoid the price drop, but since it would have been for a hit I held out. Fortunately.

He was never an option anyway. IMO. Shame injured though. Tough for the lad and Newcastle.

    Which is better:

    1. Mane & Jerome or
    2. Drinkwater & Pelle

Is he worth the 0.3 over Cedric? Haven't seen a lot of Southampton this season, has Cedric acclimatised himself to the league yet? Tight on cash but can afford one of them. Tough decision.

Cedric's adapting but not as quickly as I'd hoped. He's definitely improving. But he's got a way to go before he's level with Bertie. I've just brought in Cedric but it was due to lack of funds.

If I were you I would see how he gets on against villa at home. Class is permanent as they say. But Chelsea as a whole have been rubbish. This may be the game it turns around.

If they are rubbish again -> ship! 🙂

Having Theo Walcott in your team allows you a chance to play 3-3-4 formation.

    Discuss.

    Any thoughts on this?

    GW 9: Cresswell > Monreal/Bellerin
    GW10: Koralov > Bertrand/Cedric

Or would you hold both Cress and Kora?

    Current defence
    Dawson/Cresswell/Korolov/Toby/Francis
