Moving Target

Moving Target – Yannick Bolasie

Following the additions of Idrissa Gueye and Ashley Williams over the past few weeks, Everton continued to strengthen their squad with the signing of Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie earlier this week for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth £25 million.

The 27-year-old has penned a five-year contract with the Toffees, and speaking about his latest new face, Everton manager Ronald Koeman outlined some of the qualities the DR Congo international will bring to his side:

“Yannick is a player who has been a long time on my radar because he’s the type of winger I like – fast, strong and he can play different positions in the forward line. He’s a really good signing for the club. At 27, he’s a good age and he has experience in the Premier League. He will give strength to the team and I’m very pleased to have Yannick as part of what we are trying to build here at Everton.”

The History

Bolasie endured a nomadic start to his footballing career – having started out at Rushden & Diamonds as a 16-year-old, he had spells at non-league side Hillingdon Borough and Maltese outfit Floriana.

He returned to England in 2008, although over the next few seasons Bolasie would take in stops at Plymouth Argyle, Dagenham & Redbridge, Barnet and back at Rushden & Diamonds, before joining Bristol City in June 2011.

While Bolasie only scored one goal in 23 appearances for the Robins in 2011/12, his performances saw him named the club’s Young Player Of The Year. Having failed to settle in the south-west, he handed in a transfer request, and completed a move to Crystal Palace in August 2012.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a successful first season with the Eagles, scoring three goals and registering eight assists in 45 matches as they secured promotion back to the Premier League.

Over the past three years, Bolasie has stood out as one of Palace’s main attackers, with his pace and dribbling ability a constant menace to opposition defences. In 90 Premier League appearances, he has scored nine goals and added 19 assists.

While Bolasie was eligible to play for France, England and DR Congo at international level, he chose to represent the latter, making his debut against Libya in March 2013. He currently has 27 caps to his name, and has totalled seven goals and two assists for his country.

The Prospects

Given the significant outlay made by Everton on Bolasie, it’s expected that he’ll warrant a regular starting berth once he’s fully acclimatised on Merseyside.

As already referenced, Koeman hinted at Bolasie’s versatility, which, given the Dutchman’s liking for experimenting with different formations, should prove invaluable.

Koeman opted for a 3-4-2-1 system for the Toffees’ opening day clash against Tottenham, with Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas in central attacking midfield positions behind Gerard Deulofeu in the “false nine” role.

With Barkley likely to be a regular starter, Bolasie appears most likely to take Mirallas’ position in that formation, with Romelu Lukaku taking Deulofeu’s spot in attack once he returns from a heel injury. That’s providing he stays at the club beyond the transfer window, of course.

Alternatively, in a 4-2-3-1 system, Bolasie could play out wide, with either Deulofeu or Mirallas on the opposite flank, leaving Barkley in the number ten role behind Lukaku.

Comparing the underlying statistics from Bolasie, Barkley, Deulofeu and Mirallas last season, it was the Belgian who led the way for minutes per chance with 26.6, ahead of Barkley (33.8), Bolasie (38.4) and Deulofeu (162.3).

In terms of creativity, the Spaniard shone the brightest, though, creating a chance every 41.7 minutes, marginally better than Barkley (57.3) and Mirallas (60.7), with Bolasie surprisingly only managing to create a chance every 95.2 minutes.

Bolasie’s statistics from last season weren’t particularly impressive then, but the DR Congo international was part of a Palace side that did struggle during the second half of the campaign.

The major attraction of Bolasie from a Fantasy perspective is his price tag, coming in at just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), compared to 6.5 for both Deulofeu and Mirallas, while Barkley is valued at 7.5.

Currently owned by 4.9% of FPL bosses, Bolasie is likely to be closely monitored over the next few matches, with his favourable valuation making him an intriguing option.

With so many bit hitters such as Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eden Hazard performing during the opening Gameweek, the need for enablers in both the mid-price and budget brackets is likely to increase over the coming weeks.

There’s no doubt that Bolasie has the potential to frustrate but, if he can find an end product, we could have a player who emerges from the pack to become a very popular option as a third or fourth midfielder.

Furthermore, he also faces a very favourable run of fixtures as he settles in at Merseyside, with Everton set to face just one of last year’s top eight (wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL, mci, bur) in the next eight Gameweeks.

The deadline is on Friday at 7pm. Since price changes happen late (around midnight isn't it?), I think he'll have to rise on Thursday to rise before the deadline.

I think we will get to see him play on Friday before he rises (probably that night). If he scores against Southampton then I'll finally be convinced and I'll do Vardy -> Ibra that evening.

First thing, I covered my sandwich with a napkin and the bread still went stale. Secondly the delivery man left the box upside down and now I have a couple of pints of fish juice all over my crotch.
Maybe I'm better off sticking with Vardy.

OR of 1,412 after GW1 so feeling confident and trying to stay ahead. Liking the set up of my team and banking my FT. Fully settled on my team but unsure who to bench out of my defenders.
Playing Foster (EVE) so based on this which two would you bench out of:
    A) Terry (wat)
    B) Valencia (SOT)
    C) Stones (stk)
    D) Friend (sun)
    E) Evans (WBA)

Currently benching D & E as I don't want to double up but what do you all think?

Guys what are your thoughts on Walcott.

    Have 8.0 for a middie.
    Alli . Fir . Capoue. Redmond .
    Kun. Costa. Vardy.

    Considering Walcott or Barkley.
    Ramirez lingers in between too.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How much do price changes effect your transfer moves.

With Coutinho rising and non players like Yaya Toure falling already we are seeing the value of jumping on a bandwagon and offloading dud players.

But how much are you influenced by price changes?

For example Vardy may fall this week and Ibrahimovic may rise? In terms of team value it makes sense to swap if you can. But are price changes clouding our judgement? If there were no changes would you swap Vardy for Ibrahimovic. The same would apply perhaps next week to say a falling Gray and an ascending Rondon/Negredo/Defoe/Diomande.

I am influenced if I think the player will be worth it. Think it would have been madness to jump on Kingsley for instance. I also dont mind holding a player through a few drops if I think he will deliver.

Have considered changing Vardy solely because of the expected price drop.

Have decided to keep because I think he will do well this weekend but the problem is that first 0.1 drop at this stage might as well be a 0.5 drop.

I suppose if you're thinking about a move and would prefer to wait then an imminent price change might be enough to tip the balance and force your hand. Particularly if the move becomes unnafordable.

IMHO good team value comes from having the form players in your team and it's too early to judge that. A good fantasy team that's doing well naturally picks up value without chasing it too much, watching the drops is more of an issue....I have Vardy and I'm not happy if he drops but I'm not going into a transfer without seeing another GW.

I'm with you on this one.

If you are chasing a price rise, it has to be for the right reason. That would only be for getting a form player in, which would hopefully in turn bring you points. Getting a player in for a one off great performance isn't worth it as he'll invariably disappoint you one or two gameweeks down the line.

Getting rid of out of form is essential unless he's your 4.0 enabler and never plays anyway.

I am a convert to building up total value though. It helped me win my mini league and reach 41k last season. I have someone unknown on this site to thank for that tip

Very well said. Your value rises from picking good, in-form players so if you go by that mindset, the odd price fall or missed rise shouldn't matter too much in the grand scale of things.

But seriously. This week I'm very influenced by the transfer value. If there was no change I would definitely keep Vardy as I see him out scoring Ibra this week, but then I'll definitely want Ibra against Hull and won't be able to afford him. Gotta do it I think.

      1. Still Unsure
          7 years, 8 months ago

Exactly this. I'm scared of not owning Ibra, although this week him v Vardy is pretty even. But if Ibra's price is going to rise I'll be making that move at a -4 cost as otherwise my midfield transfer isn't possible.

I do think TV is going to be more important this year. Just can't see many Mahrez/Vardy/Alli types this season that will go on to score huge points at a tiny price. Having a good team value later in the season to afford the likes of Sanchez, KDB, Hazard, Aguero, Ibra could be really important.

Sometimes it does effect my transfers. But all that planning in pre-season cannot just be thrown in the bin. I decided to have Vardy from the start, and I intend to keep him because I think he will bring in the points sooner rather than later.

Try to wait as long as I can, but if you're gonna be priced out of a move you have to jump the gun sometimes.

Remember a couple of seasons ago I got Michu in early before he'd played in that GW he got injured, then I swapped him for Silva who then got injured in a CL game. Lessons learned from that experience...

I tend to be concerned more about a fall than an increase and I always factor in the bandwagon like Marcial last year. Already Coutinho and probably Redmond will go up and not return. Others such as Kingsley will adjust with a fit squad. If there is a big ownership and rumours circulate like Hart you have to react and that is not just price movement. Everyone knew Coutinho would rise but I did not take him on because I am still not sure of fantasy prospects. mane at 9.5 made him even more appealing though.

tl:dr - They influence my decisions a lot, because I have a strategy that tries to increase TV in the first half of the season.

Last season I had a distinct strategy of bandwagoning (sensibly) in the first half of the season, and then being really strict with my transfer in the second half of the season. This gave my a huge TV in the end (topped 111mil), money became no object, and I finished 187th, my highest place finish ever.

So I will be using the same strategy this season. Any bandwagons that actually make sense - I won't sub in player who has nabbed a goal in an 85th minute sub appearance, who has dodgy fixtures - I'll definitely make a move for it.

That said, I made a very strong start this year with 77 points and nobody I really want to drop. I looked at Gray > Negredo or Firmino > Coutinho, but both were a little bit sideways, the Firmino move in particular. So this week I'm going to save my transfer, but that will probably be rare.

Do we know anything about the price change algorithms yet though? How can one even assess whether a player, Ibra for instance, is going to rise or not and on which day? That would at least help on the decision-making, e.g. if it seems that Ibra isn't rising then I could hold on for next week, but as of now do we have any idea of whether he'll rise or not - and when?

I think 100m £ is worth around an average round of 55 pts. That means 1m £ is 0,55 pts and a price chance of 0,1 is worth 0,055 pts. With 37 GWs to go a price chance of 0,1 is then worth 0,055 times 37 = 2,0 pts! A rise in price is actually just worth half a price fall 1,0 point.

So basically you can ride these bandwagons as long you offloading player doesn't perform 2,0 pts (1,0 pts in case of a rise) better then the one you get in.

This also shows why chasing rises / avoiding falls are more important with many GW left. With 10 GW left a similar fall is worth 0,055 * 10 = 0,55 pts.

I don't see much likelihood of Vardy falling. Unless it is talked up on here and we get a wildebeest stampede. 🙁

Last season I took a hit before GW2 to bring in Mahrez and Payet. This season I see no-one that's a necessary addition that I don't already have and am saving FT. I still think Firmino is a better choice than Coutinho based on last season - and neither the manager nor the team has fundamentally changed. It will take more than one week to change my assessment there.

Already done Oscar to Coutinho - made sense in several ways. Price rise/form and didn't think much of Oscar in general play - Fab/Pedro lurking in the wings and it won't be Haz or Will I Am making way. Doubled up on the boys from Brazil...

However I can't see reason to take a hit on a playing, fit player for a price rise.

Taking it that one covers captain picks like Kun nailed or a premium pair that rotate nicely the points per million obviously have an impact. I know there are many factors to consider but isn't value for money more important than we realise.
I think the Redmond Bolasie Snodgrass factor will be more important this year but are they likely to outscore premium defenders at a similar price?

      1. Energetics
        • 9 Years

I think Redmond and probably Snodgrass will out score lost defenders at their price point, certainly for the first half of the season.

        Bolasie not so sure.

      Bench 2:

      Baines (WBA A)
      Stones (STO A)
      Friend (SUN A)
      Pieters (CITY H)

Got Friend and Pieters on the bench currently.

RE: The Team News Page. That's not how Saints play at all under Puel. So I thought I'd clarify 🙂 (because it must be hard to keep on top of all of the team stuff)

It's a 4-1-2-1-2, not a 4-3-3. And Tadic is behind the strikers, not out wide, although he does have something of a free role. I'd expect:

      ------------ Forster
      Cedric Fonte* VVD Targett
      ----------- Romeu
      ---- Hojbjerg** --- Davis
      ------------ Tadic
      --- 'Redz' ------ Long*** ---

      * - depending on if he stays/feels like playing
** - JWP started last time but he played poorly and Hojbjerg impressed as a sub
*** - played poorly, could lose out to Austin.

Lost all grip of midfield against Watford and they aren't, with the greatest respect, the most accomplished PL team. I think Mourinho will turn OT back into the fortress it once was, given his record for home wins, and I think we could be over-run. I hope I'm wrong.

With the frontline of Kun - Kane - Vardy I'm struggling to get in Hazard, Ibra, Costa.

Kane - Vardy have 2 home games each now till GW3. Do I give them 2 more weeks or look to ship out one or both of them if they blank again this week ?

Me too, but after comparing stats in members tables, it's still a gamble to switch and Negredo price is definitely going up due to casuals getting him in. Used to play for Man City, favourable fixtures etc.
He only had one shot on goal and scored with that shot, Gray outperformed on most underlying stats. Going to wait a couple of weeks and see what happens.

Similar situation to horsey here with Vardy and 1.5m burning a hole in the bank.I think I might stick with Vardy for now though rather than transfer in Ibra. If ibra had got double digits and been hammering in the shots it would be a different matter, but the best that could be said of him right now is that he looks like being a very solid point scorer, which isn't necessarily ideal fro 11.5 m.

Its only been one week, and better options could still emerge. Bringing in Ibra now would be a significant commitment that locks away a huge amount of cash, whereas keeping Vardy for a week or two more allows time to better assess the options that are out there (one of which could be 3-5-2 with the amount of OOPs out there). If the worst comes to the worst, I can always sell Heaton for Jakupoo to get the extra 0.5 if price changes take hold.

I'm not entirely convinced, but that's my thinking right now.
