Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 5

The Gameweek 5 captain poll, canvassing your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 5, is now live.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

Alexis Sanchez (11.0) and Eden Hazard (10.3), the two most popular candidates to replace suspended captaincy stalwart Sergio Aguero, failed their audition spectacularly in Gameweek 4.

The 13.9% owned Sanchez was rested for the Southampton tie ahead of Arsenal’s midweek Champions League game with Paris Saint Germain and brought in just one Fantasy Premier League point from a brief appearance off the bench. Meanwhile, Gameweek 4 poll leader Eden Hazard, who sits in 34.9% of FPL teams, failed to pick up any attacking points for the first time this season, away to Swansea. The Chelsea man also only managed a single FPL point after receiving a yellow card.

Nevertheless, both could reward those who keep the faith. Hazard takes on Liverpool in the Friday evening kick off and already has two goals at Stamford Bridge this term and has fired in 10 goal attempts on home soil, compared to six away. Liverpool, it is worth noting, have failed to register a clean sheet so far this season.

An away trip to Hull City could also ensure Sanchez follows up his Gameweek 4 disappointment with a positive haul. The Chilean scored and registered two assists away to Watford in Gameweek 3.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea also offer alternative options. With a brace against Swansea, Diego Costa (9.8) is now the only forward to bring in attacking points in every fixture so far. He certainly has form on his side ahead of Friday night’s game and is now part of 21.7% of FPL teams.

Santi Cazorla (7.6), who is on penalties and has been drafted in by more than 26,000 FPL managers so far this week, could be another popular selection. His second penalty of the season, against Southampton, takes him to fourth in FPL’s overall points table. Mesut Ozil (9.6) is another candidate. Despite failing to deliver attacking returns in Gameweek 4, he was Arsenal’s most creative player that match and scored during the Gunners’ last away trip in Gameweek 3 at Vicarage Road.

Midfield captaincy options are in abundance amongst Manchester City and Liverpool’s ranks.

Robert Firmino (8.4) and Sadio Mane (8.9) brought in three goals, an assist and five bonus points between them in their humbling of Leicester at Anfield in Gameweek 4.

Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) took centre stage for Manchester City with a goal and assist in the win at Old Trafford. The surprising differential, who has an ownership of just 6.1%, looks a prime candidate for the armband when City host Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 14% of FPL managers who own Raheem Sterling will also be considering the 8.2 priced England winger, despite his lowly one point return in the Manchester derby at the weekend. That was his only match without a goal or assist all season and his last home game, against West Ham in Gameweek 2, saw him bring in 15 points via a brace of goals.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8) may well offer the most reliable source of captaincy points, away to a Watford side that has conceded eight goals and fail to register a shut-out this campaign. No player has generated more goal attempts than the Manchester United striker this season, who with a 63% ownership is FPL’s most popular player by a clear distance.

A final name worth mentioning is something of a forgotten man in previous captain polls, however, with his first goal of the season, against Stoke in Gameweek 4, Harry Kane (10.9) could be on the verge of a prosperous run of form.

Not only has he a favourable tie, at home to Sunderland, but Spurs look set to welcome back their influential midfielder Moussa Dembele, who as the theory goes, helps get the best out of the England centre forward. Should Kane score again this weekend it surely won’t be long before his 14.3 FPL ownership rockets.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Yeah as Kopite id say our defence is in a bad state most likely to concede from a set piece vs CHE this GW relying on Mane & Coutinho to get at thier face on Friday.

    Repost from old post:
Capoue sort of saving me from disaster this GW after complete midfield failure from Hazard(C), Özil and Lamela. Lamela needs to get the boot for some short term boost, but who to pick within a budget of £9.0:

    A) Barkley
    B) Sterling
    C) Antonio
    D) Firmino
    E) Mané
    F) Other?

    cheers

Surely good long term - but I don't expect them to bring in much returns this GW away against Chelsea and WBA. Ideally would like some short term points before wild carding soon

I wouldn't sack Lamela yet - Sunderland (H) and Middlesbrough (A) up next.

Antonio has WBA (A) and Southampton (H), so perhaps look to exchange them in Wk7.

I'd probably switch Özil to Cazorla for the pens and £2m at some point, and Firmino looks good from Wk6.

      Save your transfer, imo.

And never put a defender on the captain poll - but captaining a goal-scoring defender who also keeps clean sheets can sometimes pay off handsomely. It has done occasionally in the past for both Baines and Ivanovic.
He would already have had a 15 point return if his penalty miss had rebounded directly into the goal instead of via the goalkeeper.

Perhaps some of you are relatively new to this site, and haven't heard of the Baines Rule. It's very simple:

      Never bench;
      Never captain.

      You're welcome.

There's no great justification for the second part - but there is always an element of risk in captaining a defender.

The rule would be more appropriately applied to Trollkaku.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 5

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 2pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Has the Lukaku story been mentioned this morning?

He was reportedly fuming at Everton for not paying £6,500 to fly him back from international duty.

United, City etc all paid for their Belgian players to return because they were in action again on Saturday but Everton made Lukaku pay for his own flight because they were not in league action until Monday night.

Looking forward to another sulky blank this evening as just a Baines owner 🙂

    Am I mad for contemplating Costa+Ozil > Kane(c)+Cazorla for a hit?

83! You don't need advice! I really don't think taking Ozil out for Cazorla for a hit is a good move though.

It's really to enable Kane captaincy...not convinced of any other captain choices from my team this week.

I'm punting on Kane's purple patch starting with the goal and dembele's arrival

      Hi Dvassel.

I see that you dont have Kun from the start?

Is that safe and do you have a plan to get Kun when wildcarding?

Kane is the best bet; a goal gives him confidence and with Dembele back...

I'm considering Iheanacho (C) for one week only before my wildcard.

I'd say the Dembele theory supports, rather than detracts, from Kane. Let's put it down to anomaly!

I would still rather have Ibra tbh but it would be better for United's all round attacking play.

If he get a regular staring bert- certainly a case for ditching Ibra and go with a front three of Kun+Rash+Costa/Lukaku/Benteke.

Based on Mou comment, I think Rash maybe a pairing striker to Zlatan.

Wayne is the one who should play wide. Wayne assists twice in that position. One to Zlatan, one to Rashford this season.

Im tempted with Rashford from last season. He have very good dribbling skills, running and finishing too.

Best replacement for Townsend .. 6.4m to spend. I have redmond and capoue.

I like snodgrass but he was poor fixtures.

    Any suggestions ?

Am I crazy to be considering having Ibra, Aguero AND Costa?

If I swapped Hazard to Cazorla I could then swap Rondon for Aguero.

    Line up would be

    Foster/Jaku
    Valencia/Baines/Stones/McAuley/Amat
    Firmino/Cazorla/Antonio/Capoue/Hojbjerg
    Aguero/Ibra/Costa

By choice I'd keep him, however wondering whether Costa+Cazorla will out perform Hazard+Rondon - I kinda think they will.

B/n the two, I'd go with Kun. With Tekkers, Kane and hopefully, Lukaku coming to life soon, there are other alternatives to Ibra IMO.

That sinking feeling on a Saturday afternoon when after hitting the roof because your most expensive Midfielder Alexis Sanchez and a big reason in your playing your wildcard is named on the bench in a 3 o clock kick off and as the tie evolved and Arsenal stumble in what was supposed to be an 'easy victory' you realise that Alexis will be introduced to the play for that famous '1 pointer' whilst in the corner of your eye you see Watford making a stunning comeback against the odds and s certain Ethienne Capoue heavily involved and racking up a double digit score, then bang like a car crash your worst fears are realised when with 29 minutes to go Sanchez enters the fray with Capoue now looking like 13 points when bonus will get added....
    Fpl - Priceless?

It's more likely to go that way than get 13pts autosubbed from your 5th midfielder.

      Such is life.

      Let's go Baines tonight.

I haven't been checking the site tbf. As soon as Antonio bagged 2, and I had opted against him I went into fantasy football shutdown and didn't look till this morning. I would have been on about 20 if it weren't for Costa and Snoddy.
