Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 10

Five more players plunged from the Suspension Tightrope on a weekend that saw more yellow than an episode of The Simpsons.

Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic (7.2) will miss the Gameweek 11 trip to West Ham after collecting his fifth caution of the campaign in Monday night’s win over Swansea.

West Ham’s Winston Reid(5.0) also sits out that match.

The New Zealand international – who had racked up 29 points in three matches prior to last weekend – picked up his second consecutive booking, and fifth of the season, in the 2-0 loss at Everton.

The Toffees’ Idrissa Gueye (5.0) collected a fourth caution in five matches against the Hammers and skips a trip to Chelsea.

Gaston Ramirez’s (5.3) brilliant solo run against Bournemouth led to his first goal of the season for Middlesbrough. He has been rather more prolific in front of referees, with his fifth caution meaning he will sit out Saturday’s trip to the Etihad.

West Brom’s James McClean (5.0) triggered an automatic ban in the 4-0 demolition by Man City – the third successive Gameweek that a Baggies player has toppled off the Tightrope.

In terms of other players currently banned, Ander Herrera’s (6.3) dismissal for two yellows in the Burnley blank has him sitting out Manchester United’s away day in Swansea, while Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko (6.8) served the second of his three-match ban and will be available again following the Arsenal showdown.

Hull City striker Adama Diomande (4.6) is now one match into his three-stretch for striking an opponent in the EFL Cup win over Bristol City.

Meanwhile, the Tightrope is positively groaning under the weight of new arrivals following Gameweek 10.

The 13.2%-owned Bournemouth defender Adam Smith (4.8) has enjoyed a steady rise in popularity every Gameweek this season, but is now one card from a ban following a caution at Middlesbrough and will have to keep his powder dry at home to Sunderland on Bonfire Night.

Paul Pogba’s (8.2) fourth yellow of the season against Burnley leaves his 8.8% ownership base hoping he doesn’t go into the international break with a ban picked up away at Swansea, with 3.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers in the same boat regarding Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8) when Man City host Middlesbrough.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose (5.9) is another popular pick teetering on the edge of a ban.

The 5.7%-owned full back picked up his third consecutive booking against Leicester City, and with a North London derby to come on Sunday, may be ripe for a fall.

Others joining the quartet on the tightrope are Yohan Cabaye (5.6), Sam Clucas (4.8), Danny Simpson (4.9), Valon Behrami (4.5) and Craig Dawson (4.9).

All those new arrivals will struggle to find any space on a rope already accommodating veteran do-badder Diego Costa (10.4), whose fourth straight match without a suspension-triggering card came, rather fittingly, against the Saints.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2) is another premium priced striker sitting on the four-yellow mark. The United frontman continues to shed owners at a considerable rate after blanking for the sixth straight fixtures at home to Burnley.

Those two are joined by Marouane Fellaini (5.8), Gareth Barry (4.6), Robert Huth (5.0), Jan Vertonghen (5.7), Ryan Shawcross (4.9), Mark Noble (6.2) and Jose Holebas (4.7).

One player back from a three-match suspension for Gameweek 11 is Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka (5.2) and Claudio Yacob (4.4) will return for West Brom after doing his one-match time.

The Men in Black
After taking a well-deserved Gameweek 9 break, the referees got back to awarding penalties again, with Martin Atkinson pointing to the spot for the second time in nine matches this season and the rather more prolific Robert Madley making it four awards in seven.

Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe (7.3) and Spurs striker Vincent Janssen (7.7), with his first Premier League goal, were the respective beneficiaries.

Atkinson’s apparent frugality with penalties seems to be over. Having awarded none in his first six matches, he’s now given two in his last three, while Madley’s decision was his first since his three-in-three start to the season.

Michael Oliver declined to add to his penalty portfolio in the Monday night match involving Stoke and Swansea, but has still awarded six in nine starts. Mike Dean, with six in eight matches, is now the spot-kick supremo.

At the other end of the scale, Jon Moss extended his streak to eight matches without a penalty (despite having the third highest card average at 4.88, and a table-topping two red cards this season – level with Roger East). Mike Jones followed him with a sixth penalty-free performance, matching Craig Pawson, who didn’t feature this week.

Saturday was Lee Mason’s birthday, and he promptly fell into the comedy trap by handing out seven cards of his own at The Hawthorns, including a special delivery to James McClean that triggered the midfielder’s one-match ban.

One hundred matches into the season and the new ‘anti-grappling’ laws have clearly made their mark, with referees awarding 33 penalties compared to just 19 at the same juncture last year. But they do have some heart – a whopping 22 red cards were brandished by this stage last time out compared to just nine so far this campaign.

    Anchored 🙁

Keep hearing & reading a lot of people say this fixture tonight for City is one they MUST get a result from. Even Pep said its "like a final". I'm struggling to see how it's anything more than a formality. All they need to do is beat Celtic and not lose to Borussia Moch to qualify. Barcelona have that #1 place pretty much secured so not like that is up for grabs anyway.

    No?

And if they lose to Celtic they are out? If they draw they have to beat Borussia? It's certainly no formality.

Well beating Celtic at home should be a formality - they're terrible, not sure how they got a point at home but away its a completely different story.

Maybe just to prove a point it's a must win?

1 win in 7 matches is not a great record. Beating Barcelona would be a huge morale boost for the team & manger.

If managers went into games with such attitude, they'd be losing everything. They can easily slip against Celtic or Borussia, there's no bad teams in the CL.

Went for a punt on Valencia to Michael Keane for a couple of weeks punt on a Burnley defender. Give me this team which I might wild card after international break to fix a few positions.

    Schmeichel
    Keane / Pieters / Evans
    Sanchez / Redmond / Coutinho / Firmino
    Aguero © / Deeney / Lukaku

    (Jaku / Capoue / Friend / Kinglsey)

    Good to go?

Allen and Capoue have performed in 4 GWs. Allen blanked the rest. Allen is just doing Capoue later in the season.

This is not true though. Allen is playing at a number 10 and posting underlying stats that Capoue simply wasn't achieving in his prime.

Capoue made runs near the box that all paid off. But he didn't do it often. Allen's main job in a midfield where he has two defensive midfielders behind him is to supply the strikers and wingers and run into the box himself.

Comparing Allen and Capoue is convenient because they are similarly priced but is simply not accurate.

Same with Gundogan - who plays in a far more attacking Man City side. He too is posting the sort of chance creation and shot stats that Capoue never achieved.

We did a piece on the scoutcast about it last week comparing Capoue early season and Allen now. Allen completely wiped the floor with the Frenchman in terms of attacking stats.

They are as dissimilar as two dissimilar peas in a pod.

By your logic, it's not worth owning Allen as he's only performed in 4 GWs and blanked in the rest. Sanchez and Coutinho have scored points in 5 GWs and blanked in the rest. Are they also poor picks? Terrible reasoning tbh

I'm not buying into Allen completely yet. It seems like he has a slightly higher goal threat but it's not by a mile. Touches in the box are quite far up on Capoue but everything else is only slightly better. I too think he'll dry up soon.

A bit but I'm used to it. I'm always very hesitant (probably to a fault) to jump on board with cheapish player bandwagons. They can dry up very quickly and leave compulsory transfers to be made. I'm not dropping any of Sanchez/Mane/Coutinho/Siggy for him anyway. One of many decisions I'll probably end up regretting at the end of the season though!

                    Foster - Pickford
                    Koscielny - Valencia* - B. Davies* - Holebas - Amat*

                    Aguero - Lukaku - Deeney

                    1 FT 0.1 ITB

Really wanted Austin in for Deeney but don't think I can do that now that Shaqiri's injured. I think Valencia + Shaqiri -> Fuchs + Redmond (-4) is my best move. Thoughts? Anything better there?

We need a proper hot topic to discuss defence. Are clean sheets on the rise or will the early season lottery continue. This in turn helps with how much to invest in defence

I'm all set to own Alonso, Fuchs/Morgan, Cedric by GW15.
That's around 16-16.5m for 3 good defenders who I feel will deliver the clean sheets and possibly some attacking returns.

In the immediate , Stones offers the best value over the next 3. A bit more medium term , West Brom , Southampton and Leicester look decent bets but picking the right defence might be a "lottery" as you say. Chelsea , even though have poor fixtures can be relied on , especially if you are considering Marcos Alonso , who offers the potential of points at the both ends of the pitch.

Cedric is definitely one to watch £4.9 mil as well could be an absolute bargain

I'm happy enough with my defenders currently and bringing in Fuchs cements that. I think we have enough info on potential attacking returns from defenders now and it at least feels like there's a few more clean sheets to go around (could be wrong though).

From this week I'll be lining up with:

Mustafi - next 2 not great but fixtures after look good
Fuchs - Excellent at home, hopefully BAPs+attacking returns
Lovren - Liverpool great fixtures. Some goal thread
                      Holebas - The king
                      Amat - bench fodder

Is it about picking the best defense or the team with the best defensive fixtures? Does Home/Away influence CS? What about adding in attacking threat? We need answers.

                      I've currently got

                      Valencia Holebas Daniels Evans Amat

So still some fires to put out.

                      Valencia to Fuchs/Alonso for me.

Daniels and Evans rotate really well.

I'll play Holebas every week due to attacking threat. He's good for GWK 13-15 anyway.

Ideally it would be nice to replace Amat and give myself more choice.

I took at punt on Keane from Burnley in for Valencia.
                      Defense lines up like...

                      Schmeichel
                      Keane / Pieters / Evans (Friend/Kingsley)

My 2p is that clean sheets will pick up but won't return to the average of seasons gone by. Refs sticking to awarding penalties and the general level of comical defending leads me to predict that clean sheets will be tough to predict until January. Post January I feel normality will resume to the level of past seasons.
It would be great 8 get stats on the average number of clean sheets in the PL across the months. *hint hint

I agree. I'm mainly targeting attacking defs/bonus magnets given lack of clean sheets.

We'll be discussing this in more detail in tonight's Scoutcast.

                      I've currently got:

                      Mustafi, Williams, Pieters, Collins, Amat

My transfers this week mean Collins will be replaced with Fuchs so hopefully on the way up! I might have to suffer Amat a while longer though due to a lack of cash to upgrade. I feel things are settling down a little and teams are starting to keep clean sheets.

                      Cech
                      Alonso Davies Pieters

Happy with all those apart from Davies, once I do Davies to Cedric in a few weeks I should be set for the long term.

The top defences still seem too unreliable to warrant investment just yet. I was really tempted to play my wildcard a couple of weeks back and bring in Spurs / Arsenal Defenders but, I am glad I opted against it as, they haven't delivered consistent returns.

I'm definitely thinking of bringing in Alonso though when Chelsea's fixtures clear up.

Current defence: Holebas, Stones, Rose, Friend, Kone
Current considerations: Brunt, Alonso, 'Generic-Southampton-Defender', Dann

I'm looking at City/Livp/Leic and South for my Valencia replacement in weeks 11-20. Looking at home/away it's confusing...

Everyone says Livp is a no go but their def stats(GA/SiB conceded) are the best of that lot. Better than City. They have 3 goals conceded at home while Leic have 2...nothing in it...

So what's the tie breaker? Fixtures?

I would say look at the 'value' offered by defenders in FPL website (look under stats). Apart from some cheap overperforming midfielders (Allen, Capoue, McArthur) who are unlikely to keep their form up, the best 'value' is offered by some of the premium defenders (Koscielny, Blind, Azpilicueta, Walker) etc. This is despite there being fewer clean sheets. Having 3 premium defenders is a must IMO as they offer a cheaper way to decent points returns. Look at:

                      Arsenal: Koscielny, Bellerin
                      Man Utd: Blind, Shaw
                      Chelsea, Azpi, Alonso
                      Spurs: Walker, Rose

Worth having Holebas / Smith as a cheap filler.

A defensive focus means it's somewhat difficult to have a pricey good midfield if owning Kun Costa Lukaku.

Each team has on average conceded 1.35 goals per game this season, compared with an average of 1.32 per game in the past 6 seasons. First off, that's not going to be a statistically significant effect, and essentially unsurprising when you take into account that teams tend to concede a bit more early in seasons.

And secondly, say that it was true. What would be the implication? This simple model (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CS41LK7UsAAEqAh.png:large), suggests that teams conceding 1.35 goals per game are expected to keep a clean sheet 26.7 % of the time. That number for teams who concede 1.32 per game is 27.5 %. You decide if that is a game-changing difference, worthy of the complete panic that has been about this non-story in the FPL community. I guess randomness is a hard concept to appreciate.

Looking at the stats I have fallen in love with Alonso. He seems nailed on, and I expect Chelsea to keep a clean sheet in 36 % of their matches. He is expensive, so what makes him worth it, is his extraordinary offensive contribution. He has a history of producing shots inside the area and creating chances. Statistically I can see no better attacking fullback in the league.

For me, there are just far too may midfielders performing well this season to justify heavy spending in defence. I've normally done one prem, one middle, two 4.5s and a 4 bench fodder. But I'm going to swap my prem for another cheapie and rotate them to upgrade the middle.

I watch every chelsea game. Cahill is half the player Zouma is.

so do I and agree. But Zouma has not played for a LONG time and we don't know what Conte thinks of him.

If he nails down a spot he's a bargain at 5.3. I might consider getting him over Alonso.

Play Holebas against liverpool who are week vs set pieces or Pieters?

I'm playing both. Pieters probably more likely for a clean sheet although I can't see either keeping one. Probably Holebas for his set piece potential

Need to get rid of Arnautovic, 8.3m available, already have Sanchez, Mane, Firmino, Fletcher. Best option for next 2-3 GWs? Sterling or maybe keep Arnie?

Sterling has beautiful fixtures, but not doing so well in FPL. I'm keeping him but don't know if I'd be buying. Coutinho? is that affordable?

No idea. just need to monitor return dates of their possible replacements and listen to press conferences. I would say there is more chance Pickford keeps his place. Grant will def lose his.

Stats regarding goal attempts in line with Fuchs and much cheaper. Fuchs is a great pick but Huth saves you money! Huth on 4 yellows though...

                                  Fuchs until GW15. Then Alonso.

Going to do Valencia > Morgan

Is it worth holding onto Zlat for 1 more fixture?

Really want to get in haz or kdb but it would mean losing zlat and costing me -8

12 shots. 12. And Heaton was inspired. Signs point to a haul. But they've been pointing that way for weeks...

Pick two replacements for Antonio & Son will be a -4 hit of course:

                                A) Son > Tadic
                                B) Son > Siggy
                                C) Son > Willian
                                D) Son > Pedro

                                1. Antonio > Redmond
                                2. Antonio > Bolasie
                                3. Antonio > Allen
                                4. Antonio > Gundogan

                                D)

Would just play pieters, Williams and McCauley and do it for a FT next week. I don't like taking hits for defenders unless I can't field a full team.

Any ideas for this bunch folks? 2 FT's, 0.0 ITB 🙂

                                Grant - Pickford
                                Kos - Coleman - Holebas - Evans - Amat
                                Sanchez - Firmino - Lallana - Capoue - Fletcher
                                Aguero - Lukaku - Costa

                                Thinking maybe Lallana > Allen?

I wouldn't like having to play two of Capoue, Fletcher and Allen. Makes your midfield very weak. I can't see Capoue / Fletcher scoring decent points anytime soon.

I'd downgrade Kos to upgrade elsewhere
