Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Spurs have to settle for a possible Europa League spot while Leicester City win their group with a match to spare on a night of contrasting fortunes for Premier League clubs. Here’s how Matchday 5 of this season’s Champions League campaign played out.

Monaco 2 Spurs 1

It’s a fair indication of a Champions League campaign gone awry when a team’s best player is their goalkeeper.

And so it has proved for Spurs, who yet again had Hugo Lloris (5.5) to thank for delaying their elimination from a competition they have looked ill-suited to this season.

The French international saved a penalty and pulled off a string of superb saves in Monaco, but even he could not stop his side’s Champions League exit with a match still to play.

Lloris was badly let down by a makeshift defence that allowed their hosts 11 shots on target.

Mauricio Pochettino rested the Fantasy Premier League’s most-owned defender, Kyle Walker (6.1), with Kieran Trippier (4.8) replacing him. But it was the impending domestic ban for Danny Rose (5.9) that caused most of the problems.

With Jan Vertonghen (5.7) likely to deputise for Rose in Saturday’s trip to Chelsea, Pochettino decided not to risk the Belgian. Instead, he opted for Eric Dier (5.1) and Kevin Wimmer (4.6) as his centre halves and the improvised back four played like strangers for much of the night.

Harry Winks (4.5) kept his place after scoring in the 3-2 win over West Ham, while Dele Alli (8.1) and Heung-min Son (7.3) returned to the starting XI and the pair combined for Tottenham’s best chance of the night early on.

Kane (10.8) scored on the night – his fifth goal in his last four outings in all competitions, again converting from the penalty spot this time after Alli had been fouled.

The goal came just three minutes after Monaco had taken a deserved lead and, following Kane’s equaliser, the hosts’ winner then arrived a mere 38 seconds later – a fitting demonstration of Tottenham’s defensive shortcomings.

Spurs will now likely drop into the Europa League if they can seal third place in their group with a draw in their final encounter with CSKA Moscow.

Significantly, Pochettino was in a philosphical mood at the exit and the prospects of a Europa League campaign…

“Maybe after five games we do not show enough quality to share two tough competitions in the Premier League and Champions League…It is good for the club to go into the Europa League and try to go further in the competition. I think it’ll be good.”

Last night’s events, while issuing a warning on Spurs’ current form and confidence, will be welcomed by those Fantasy eyeing up Kane and his team-mates.

There’s no question that a continued Champions League campaign would have impacted on the prospects of Kane and certainly full-backs Walker and Rose. Pochettino would now seem likely to prioritise the Premier League campaign, hopefully keeping the rotation of his key assets to a minimum.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Wimmer, Rose, Wanyama, Dembélé (Eriksen 64), Alli, Winks (Sissoko 74), Son (Janssen 64), Kane.
Subs not used: Vorm, Walker, Vertonghen, Nkoudou.

Leicester City 2 Club Brugge 1

While Spurs were drowning on the Mediterranean coast, things continued to go swimmingly in land-locked Leicester.

First-half goals from Shinji Okazaki (5.7) and a Riyad Mahrez (9.0) penalty won the Foxes the group as Claudio Ranieri’s charges continued to exceed all expectations in Europe.

The Italian made just one change to the side that lost at Watford. Midfielder Andy King (4.8) came in for Daniel Amartey (4.5) as Islam Slimani (8.3) recovered from a groin problem to keep his place.

That continuity helped Leicester dominate from the get-go. Christian Fuchs (5.4) provided the cross for the opener and Marc Albrighton (5.0) was fouled for the penalty as Leicester outclassed their winless opponents.

It was rather different after the break.

The Foxes conceded for the first time in Europe this season as the visitors finally showed some spirit and at 2-1, there were some nervy moments for the hosts’ defence to overcome.

But Leicester missed good chances to seal the deal on the break and can now finally concentrate on the league – for all the right reasons – until well into the New Year, as Ranieri was keen to stress post-match.

“In the Premier League, we are very close to the relegation and we must play at the same level as the Champions League because when we want to do something we achieve something. We must concentrate on the Premier League now.”

Leicester City XI: Zieler, Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Schlupp 68), Drinkwater, King, Albrighton (Amartey 78), Vardy, Okazaki (Gray 68).
Subs: Hamer, Hernández, Musa,Ulloa.

Either he or the other Brazilian. LIV play before Chelsea and know for City's famous title win that the title can do down to goal difference on the last day of the season. They'd probably be hoping to hammer Sunderland -- get points on the board and widen the GD. I'm expecting 5+ goals.

Can you tell I own both MIDs?

Ironically he has had just a single assist this season and 3 all of last season compared to 10 the season before. FPL wise, Aguero is far less important as an FPL asset from what we have seen so far.

    http://www.goal.com/en/news/1862/premier-league/2016/11/23/29748072/guardiola-has-made-aguero-world-class-he-never-was-under?ICID=HP_HN_2

I mostly disagree. Aguero was world class before. I would argue the second best central striker in the world behind Suarez (though I wouldn't argue with you if you disagreed).

Pep's system requires a different type of striker, and this style probably makes Aguero a better all round player, but as a forward, I would say that his impact under this system is no better than is impact last season or the season before. He just has to play in a different way, with more build up play, which Foster clearly loves.

Either way, Aguero isn't leaving my team

      That's my plan

      Got Kane

Will likely bring in Ibra for Aguero this week with a view to potentially keeping Aguero for next 7 or bringing in Costa in GW15 and then reassess Aguero around GW20

I don't want to jump just yet. These premium attackers always score no matter what the defence.

Kane hatty vs Che..Aguero hatty vs Che..

Chances are, you'll get it wrong every week, and you'll punch yourself for picking Kane over Aguero one week and then vice versa the next.

Of course, if you get it right it could be incredible, but I'm not sure it's the best idea

      D. Though you bought him for attacking returns as well so might as well play him in this fixture even if LEI have given up on the league. Bench Amat -- should hurt the least if you get it wrong.

I think Firmino is better but I suspect many will take a hit or two this GW after last weekend so those 4pts in hand might prove handy especially if Wally gets a goal or assist.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Ideal front three

On last night's Scoutcast all four of us revealed we are considering ditching Sergio Aguero, with Kane and Ibrahimovic among the direct replacements discussed.

Given the wealth of options in attack what is our ideal front three for the next few Gameweeks and also what is realistically affordable for your side.

For me I think Defoe Costa and Kane look the best three. But that's just me.

Who are your top three strikers?

A nightmare? 3 goals and an assist in his last 3 though

Yes there are more alternatives than last year and yes not everything goes through him under Pep but you can't really call him a nightmare when he already scored 8 goals in the league so far 😀

Aguero, Kane and Austin, would like Costa but I wouldn't captain him (would captain Hazard) where I would Aguero (GW16, 18 and 20) so will just have to miss out and hope Kane keeps pace with Costa.

Shocked that Ibra has emerged as an Aguero replacement, take out that game against a woeful Swansea side and he's the same Ibra people on here rubbished, what changed?

I like Costa and Kane but will take a calculated risk of Ibra for this week and see how it goes

As for 3rd striker I still like Austin with the upcoming fixtures although there's a high chance he'll be rotated in the 3 games over 7-8 days period which we didn't talk about last night.

Can't argue against Defoe although upcoming fixtures aren't fantastic

Looking at taking out Aguero to go to a 5 man midfield. Feel there is to much choice in midfield not to play 5 now especially with Siggy and Firmino sometimes playing up top.

Happy with 2 cheaper forwards Defoe + Rondon and then Kane probably coming in for Aguero.

The truth is that there are only 5 strikers I am happy having and they are the 5 most expensive, the cheaper forwards are too hit and miss. You can't realistically afford 3 premiums. Therefore I think 4-4-2 is the ideal structure this season (or maybe 3-5-2).

My ideal front 3? Zlatan Kane Anichebe. Though I'd prefer Costa to Zlatan if there wasn't a suspension overhanging Costa.

I think Costa's yellow card situation is given too much prominence, a single game suspension should be more than manageable with a sensible bench.

I waited four weeks before getting Costa in (for Zlatan) and I definitely regret not doing it sooner.

Personally think that the season keeper is Costa.

Purely based on points, only he can contend with the big scoring midfield options, Kane may well get there but it's mix and match based on form apart from Costa.

3-5-2 is the only way forward until defences tighten up

Costa, Kane, then the dillema: Defoe versus Austin, form versus fixtures. Thoughts on that?

Chances of Kane and Costa double rises this week?

Might have to make an early Saturday night transfer to drop Kun this week. 🙁

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Kane's transfers in have really slowed down and Costa's have picked up really fast.

We might see a Costa double rise.

    (2) Van Dijk (or any up to 5.8), Walcott, Kane

I have (1) at the moment, worth shifting to (2)? Thanks a lot.

I need ~2m to fund a couple of defensive upgrades (Alonso & Cedric).

What looks to be the best fundraiser in GW14:
    A. Lukaku > Defoe
    B. Aguero > Kane
    C. KDB > Siggy
    D. Lukaku, de Roon > Anichebe, Siggy (-4) move to 3-5-2

    Fuchs - Pieters - Evans - Holebas - Amat
    Sanchez - Walcott - Mane - Capoue - Allen
    Aguero - Costa - Benteke

Decided to give Aguero one last chance against Burnley seeing as they were so bad against WBA. I'll get rid of Benteke this week instead.

So following the hot topic above, I have a dilemma; I am looking to do these transfers:

Lukaku and Allen -> Austin/Defoe and Siggy.

But who should I pick from Austin or Defoe? Who looks more promising long term?

My Team at the moment, 2FT and 0.4m in the bank:
    Grant Pickford
    Walker Williams Holebas Evans Amat
    Sanchez Firmino Coutinho Allen** Fletcher
    Lukaku** Aguero Costa

      Austin based on logic.

Not sure if having both Redmond and Austin is a good option. Might want to get Siggy in the mid.

Also, Benteke has to go, so i would do Benteke + Redmond to Costa + cheap mid or Coutinho + cheap striker
