This Much We Know – Gameweek 13

The Coutinho crossroads, the easy Sigurdsson option, the ongoing contest between Hazard and Sanchez and back peddling on Aguero. This and more form the key issues in and around Gameweek 13.

Coutinho blow could be a turning point…
With unconfirmed reports this evening stating that Philippe Coutinho will be sidelined until January, it’s likely that were on the verge of witnessing of a significant wave of change for both Liverpool and our Fantasy squads.

Jurgen Klopp’s side must learn to adapt without their principal architect. They have the talent to absorb losses, but having struggled to overcome the recent absence of Adam Lallana; this latest setback will be a huge concern to Klopp and Reds supporters alike.

Coutinho could dictate a match, prompting attacks with incisive runs and passing, as well as providing a significant threat from range and, this season, raiding the box. He’s a huge loss.

We can’t yet be clear on Klopp’s likely “Plan B”.

Lallana’s return could be a key factor and, from the noises today, that appears imminent – maybe even for Gameweek 14’s trip to Bournemouth.

Fantasy managers will clearly ship out Coutinho and be forced to study the impact on what remains of Liverpool’s attack.

The potential of Lallana, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane could be damaged by his absence, or even enhanced if Klopp builds a new system and distributes Coutinho’s duties.

It could even bring a new asset to light with Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can perhaps cementing a starting role and handed greater responsibility in providing and scoring goals.

Sigurdsson is tailor-made….
Coutinho’s absence appears almost syncronised with the ascent of Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson who, having performed well above his mid-price valuation in recent weeks, now appears to enter an irresistible spell, where form perfectly overlaps with fixtures.

Already earmarked as the obvious replacement for Liverpool’s Brazilian, Fantasy managers have been handed a clear route to follow; one that liberates funds for further spend elsewhere, increasing the transfer traffic heading in the direction of Spurs’ Harry Kane.

But Pedro has us thinking…
While Sigurdsson is the path of least resistance, Chelsea’s Pedro is performing at a level which ensures we perhaps need to carefully consider our options for filling the Coutinho void.

The threat from Willian over the busy schedule will always loom over the Spaniard. However, given his current form and the pivotal role he’s played in Chelsea’s stunning run of results, Pedro appears cemented as Antonio Conte’s first choice on the right of his front three.

Currently priced at just 7.3 in the Fantasy Premier League, he screams out as a potential bargain differential – particularly for those missing one or both of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

The Sanchez vs Hazard argument isn’t over yet…
And that brings us to a contest that seems destined to rage on.

Indeed, Pedro plays his part in this, undermining Hazard’s appeal somewhat by offering that cheaper and in-form cover of Conte’s attack.

Pedro’s sublime goal against Spurs was the first blow to Hazard in Gameweek 13; Sanchez’ brace on Sunday the second and most damaging.

We saw cries of frustration from those who, following Hazard’s haul against Everton, sacrificed Sanchez in the trade.

We knew that the Chilean was always capable of burning us as a result of such a move and yet, the tables could easily be turned week on week.

Hazard’s fixtures from Gameweek 15 remain vastly superior and, if the trade enabled Fantasy managers also to swoop for Marcos Alonso, Sanchez will surely be required to go on delivering consistent double figure hauls over the Christmas period.

An explosive asset, Sanchez is not renowned for his propensity to deliver goals over four consecutive matches as Hazard has achieved already this season.

However, equally, we have seen Hazard lapse into prolonged dips that provide a series of blanks and, after failing to return over his last two Gameweeks and with a trip to the Etihad next, this is a debate that seems destined to run and run.

Walcott may yet have a say…
Just as Pedro is a factor in Hazard’s stock, so Theo Walcott influences our thinking on Sanchez.

While the gap between the Chelsea men is 2.9, Walcott can be acquired for 3.5 less than his team-mate Sanchez.

Can he possibly provide compensation for Sanchez’ future hauls?

That’s a key question. We know that, as it stands, Walcott appears destined for his best season in Fantasy terms. His starting role seems more secure than ever, his output and underlying stats re-assuring.

He may get benched at least once in the coming month but, as we have seen in past seasons, like Giroud, Walcott can be a more than capable impact sub.

Sanchez is surely peerless as cover of Arsenal’s attack, but 3.5 is a significant slice of funds that can be used to augment the squad for a vital and unpredictable Christmas spell.

Shut-outs are just gravy for McAuley…
Tony Pulis will not be content with West Brom’s clean sheet tally.

Three shut-outs is a humble collection for a side so disciplined and drilled to restrict their opponent.

But while that casts some doubt on Baggies’ defenders as Fantasy assets, Gareth McAuley seems immune to such concerns due to his undeniable and seemingly unstoppable threat at set-pieces.

Pulis sets his team up to win points from dead-ball scenarios, and McAuley is clearly his key weapon.

Defences know this but seem unable to prevent him from being a factor.

The Aguero jitters are over….for now…
We were prepared to carry out the unthinkable and evacuate Sergio Aguero. But, typically, the Argentine was never going to make it an easy decision.

His two-goal return at Burnley was somehow conjured from a disjointed Manchester City display; Aguero converted scraps into goals and points without the class of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva as a supply.

That was enough to force some to reconsider, the injury to Coutinho only compounded matters, freeing up funds that enabled a move for Kane or Costa without sacrificing the City striker.

We might be settled on Aguero for now, but the jitters remain and will likely return in a few Gameweeks time.

Such is the price gap between Aguero and a chasing pack of strikers, we will likely always feel the need to check that he justifies selection.

A run of blanks, a minor injury or even indication that he’s part of Pep Guardiola’s rotation plans could trigger more doubt. It appears to be a unwanted feature of our season.

Lukaku has regressed to old ways…
While Aguero is cause for debate, there is perhaps little argument on Romelu Lukaku.

Many of us always felt that his early season form and consistency may have a shelf life.

Admittedly, I was more positive – convinced that he may be on course for a 25-goal campaign. Sadly, I appear to have been proved wrong: regression has set in and, as is so often is the case, Lukaku has been unable to overcome Everton’s slump in form to keep his tally ticking.

Sales were underway weeks ago; Sunday’s third successive blank which saw the Belgian muster just a single dead-ball effort on goal ensured they would accelerate.

With Kane’s tempting fixtures dangled before us and Coutinho’s plight making funds available, the case to retain Lukaku appears flimsy.

Austin won’t let us settle on Defoe…
In opposition to Lukaku and Everton on Sunday, Charlie Austin took less than a minute to heighten the alert on his potential.

It appears to be a straight fight between Austin and Jermain Defoe, two experienced marksmen gagging for international recognition, for our third striker slot in a 3-4-3.

Defore deserves more time having toiled in a defensive display at Anfield and, with the obliging Leicester City rearguard next to the Stadium of Light, there’s every reason for optimism.

But Austin could yet operate at a higher level – Southampton have the potential to raise their game once their Europa League schedule is disposed of, while the fixture list suggests that Austin could thrive and out pace Defoe.

We’re already convinced on lucky charm Cedric…
There’s perhaps less debate surrounding the appeal of Cedric Soares as a Southampton asset.

Re-installed in Gameweek 12, Claude Puel’s defence has already kept back-to-back clean sheets on his return and, rather spookily, they are yet to keep a shut-out without the Portuguese named on the teamsheet.

That’s likely to be a convenient coincidence rather than a solid theory but, regardless, we’re already convinced of Cedric’s potential.

The pair of bonus points in Southampton’s win over Everton, surpassing Virgil van Dijk in the Bonus Points System (BPS), offered another reminder of the value that the 4.9 option can offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

  10. Bench Boost - Best To Wait For A Double?
    Wild Rover
    • 13 Years
    7 years, 6 months ago

I'd be interested to hear peoples opinions and experiences of playing the Bench Boost chip during a double game week. I only played UFPL last season so haven't used one before.

It seems to be the popular opinion here to use it in a dgw but I'm struggling to see how it would work without wrecking your team for the fixtures either before or after the dgw. How would you get 15 players with a dgw into your squad? First of all there would have to be a lot of clubs with the same dgw, but even then you would need a fair few players from weak teams who will almost certainly have at least one bad fixture. You would probably have to play your wildcard which would leave you with a lot of dross after the dgw, or take lots of hits that you probably wouldn't recover. What about the top players who don't have a dgw? Do you keep or sell (and potentially lose a lot of money if you want them back)? Seems to me the chances of all of the ingredients for the 'perfect storm' are really unlikely to fall into place, much easier to find a single game week where all your squad have a good fixture surely?

Oh, and we all know from bitter experience that dgw's often end in tears with rest, rotation and unexpected results giving us the winter blues. Convince me 🙂

Done it last season and didn't work out all that great. Think that was the general consensus in my opinion. This season, I still plan on WC'ing and possibly getting in 10/11 DGW players max. Will completely depend on fixtures and when these DGW's fall. In short, I haven't a clue!

Played my BB in a DGW last season with moderate success but one person's anecdotal evidence isn't worth a great deal, there was no doubt some great analysis done at the time if we can track down the right person...

In my view the value of a BB in a DGW is not to try to fill your bench with players that have two games because as you rightly point out, the practicalities of that are that you have a poor team the week before/after and maybe even longer term. Instead it's to avoid the dilemma of whether or not to play Snodgrass with two fixtures or Hazard with one.

Ultimately I don't think BB needs to be tied to a DGW if you have another week where your bench looks great but I'll save mine as long as possible with an eye on the DGWs if possible.

We probably over estimate how much the bench boost is really worth. It's more the dream of it paying off big.

Last year the fixtures worked out well that wildcarding the week before you wanted to BB and getting in 15 DGW players was an okay strategy.

Fixtures might not fall as kindly again.

It's a mathematical approach. X2 will always have more potential than X1

However, you are right about one thing. Don't be blinded by the bench boost chip since loading up with double gameweekers might backfire with balnks coming up for them.

Bench boost is a false friend and it is actually quite useless since you can't play it at the same time than Triple captain (which should happen during a double GW mathematically).

Hands down easily my best GW last year when I went all in BB 15 dgw players.

Many of us got burnt by selling Spurs assets for DGWers but that was the only real negative I remember. Even Mahrez dried up by the time the DGW came along.

last season there was a double game week on week 37, so i used my wildcard on week 36 to get in the players i wanted ready for the double game week 37. Then only had one more week to get through. So not to much worry about having to buy players back.

You've hit the nail on the head WR. It wasn't the golden chip that it first looked. I suppose we could get lucky and get a bumper DGW though with lots of teams playing.

I planned my BB and TC for the double gameweeks last season and it was a full blown disaster. I'll be taking it one week at a time this season, and anyway I only have my BB chip left, used the other 2 already.

        How did they go?

Last season there were 2 DGWs and about 8 teams in each. The key is that the teams with DGWs are the teams that go far in the FA Cup which 70/80% of the time come from the league's top 8. Last season it was fairly easy as Arsenal and Everton had DGWs against easy opposition so it was only really deciding whether to him Agueroless or not.

The trick is simple. From the DGWs pick one which has outstanding fixtures for a top 4 team and pick one that is more evenly spread. Use TC on the player for one DGW, for the other wildcard the week before and BB to get 15 players on DGW. You also have punts in the 2-3 weeks before you're going to wildcard as when you're going to use it is set in stone once you have seen the fixtures.

As one DGW is usually gw37 it doesn't impact your team long term, if possible use your BB then.

The hardest part is staying patient after January as others will use their wildcards early and gain ground. Using the above method I went from 20 points back in my ML and eventually won by 110.

As the consensus says , it's not a dreamboat in the DGW s , but if you take 4-5 weeks to carefully check how the fixtures move for the wildcard before, it's possible it can be highly successful if the fixtures line up and you choose the right players.
Lot of players didn't do so well with it but a lot also did, was my best week easily , got 172 I think , made up a juicy chunk in the mini leagues.
Also the fixtures last year were decent .

Don't have to be used in a dgw. As long as you think you can get above 12+ pts from the bench then the chip is a success.

I played it last season during a double and got around 15 pts.

I think realistically 20 pts or more is the ideal.

The thing about during a double it means you can keep good single gwk players, or even stock up on double gwk players. Quite handy during a double as cheap defenders - and especially goalkeepers can do really well.

I think it is still the best time to use it but you have to be clever with a wildcard as well.

I used my BB during a DGW last year to good success in my opinion. I would say that I didn't go overboard on DGW players and kept SGW players who were in form.

The issue for me was that the impact was negated somewhat by me not having Sanchez and others in my ML triple captaining him.

I personally think as a strategy it's best to keep the chips until the DGWs and blanks as it gives us options to play with depending on how many DGWs there are and the players involved.

Wait for the DGW - I implore you! Most people on here used the same strategy on their BB chip on the same DGW last year, and as that timing ended up not working (no-ones fault, just the way it was), suddenly the chip is meaningless! Don't listen to the masses - the chip worked out brilliantly for the minority of those who used it on a different DGW.

Good to see some discussion on this tactic and to see you actually consider it properly WR.

Mods - Why was it never made a hot topic when other posters brought this up and went into far more detail? 🙄

Anyway, my summary of Ruth NZs post from pre-season with a couple of my own thoughts:

Value of BB in a SGW – 12pts
Value of BB in a DGW – 24pts

So is it worth chasing that 12 point “advantage?”

      No because:

-You have to compromise your WC by playing it a week early and selling players that you wouldn’t want to sell early. Eg Hazard may have SUN a week before the main DGW. But He doesn’t have a DGW. So you sell him for a DGW’er on your WC a week before the DGW and miss his haul vs SUN.

-Likely points hit(s) required to fix side after BB DGW.

-Almost impossible to get 15 players players twice in a DGW. Near the end of the season, rotation, injuries and even suspensions start catching up to players. I will play my second WC in the actual week of the big DGW and will get 11 “nailed on” DGW’ers.

And the result of me putting it to the test GW1...Rank 731 for the week.

That's fine if you think that way - those who TC'ed when Sanchez/Aguero got their 25 points x 3 in the DGW last season, and smashed it in the GW37 DGW with a GW36 WC may think otherwise. I guess time will tell, rather than "who shouts loudest for the longest" 🙂

I agree. My TC didn't work out as I went for Lukaku in an earlier DGW. Playing my TC in a DGW wasn't the wrong strategy, just I messed in my choice of player.

My BB was a success for me, but that's because I didn't ignore SGW players in form or the following fixtures.

I think keeping the chips until the DGW and blanks are clearer is the way to go.

The thing is you don't have to sell in form SGW players. Playing BB in a DGW doesn't mean that you have to have all DGW players or mess your team up.

You don't have to play your WC the week before the DGW. Why not 2 weeks before? Have 2 FTs ready for the DGW or have 2FTs for the week after the DGW. Or keep the AOA chip as that may help with the blank week.

        1. Nabs Kebabs
          • 12 Years

Of course you don't have to sell SGW players. But keeping them decreases the value of the BB in a DGW..you could keep SGWers anyway...the whole advantage of playing BB in a DGW is to maximise DGW players.

Also, don't really see any advantage of playing it two weeks before...all that means is you will likely have to get more DGW players even earlier..when you may only really want them for the DGW..

            • 9 Years

That's why I think saving the chips until you know how the DGWs are going to fall and the players/teams involved. Then you can see how many DGW players you want and how many SGW players.

Last season I benefitted from having 3 in form SGW players and the rest were DGW players. For me it worked, but like everything in FPL it depends on the players you choose in a given week and how they actually perform.

Dismissing the use of BB for the DGWs when you don't know which teams are going to be involved isn't the way I'm going to go.

It doesn’t mean you need to have 15 players with a DGW. The main use of the chip is to allow you play the non-premium players with dgw fixtures and still play the premium players without losing them.

This. Key to BB last year was being in a position where you could have say, 10 DGW players, and use the bench for premium SGW players.

Some people got a bit overwhelmed last year I think, playing 15DGW'ers including some rubbish players (a couple of Norwich players, Palace etc.)

    20. Licious Lizard

      I think it is clearly the better choice to use it during a DGW because of the following reasons;

      1) The obvious reason that an average player will have a much higher potential of points over 2 games than 1.
      2) Most people will have either prepared well or wildcarded up to a DGW, which gives your players a good chance to be nailed/play.
      3) By playing the chip during a double week there are two approaches. You can wildcard the week before and only get in DGW players and thus in reality play the round with "30" players. The other, which I prefer, is to get in good DGW options, but not ripping your team apart. Keeping the premium players with a good single fixture in a DGW and avoid all the hits. By playing either DGW BB approach the chip will give you points. Should be obvious direct point in the first approach, but in the second approach the BB chip allows you to keep the best players in your squad without having to ship and re-buy and you avoid the dilemma of choosing between a good player with a good fixture or an average player with two decent fixtures.
It can possibly give you 8 extra players in a round or (at least) 4 extra players saving you headaches, transfers and value loss in players.

Don't know what the averages were, but I personally got over 250 point combined in GW 34&37 last year and two green arrows in the top 10k. I think BB is the most important chip and squandering it on an imaginary bench of Pickford, Walker, De Roon, Amat in a single week is a waste of a great opportunity.

The Balders article was basically like a guidebook on how to play FPL -- a must read and one of the all-time best community articles -- so it does a nice job of explaining how a team doesn't need to be gutted to navigate the DGWs.

The other articles were interesting as well but don't have enough seasons to draw from to be a big enough sample size for conclusions, imo.

I think the TC and BB chips should be targeted to be worth an extra 20-25 points.

Yes, having 25+ playing 60+ mins makes sense. With the way fixtures fall and champions league games not clashing the dates are pretty obvious around end February. You can then play a post international break wild card to ensure optimum coverage with 13 dgw. If there are 2 DGWs then I'd prefer to use TC for the other one.

Last season I had done a sequence of WC - BB - AoA - TC to reasonable success.

The AoA allowed me to field a XI of starters if memory serves me correctly in the curtailed week.

Just a note. Don't think I spotted it but just wanted to point out the pain the WC for DGW players brought when we realized just how much rotation was happening. Just a point to consider when selecting your players, that it's still a risk depending on the manager (looking at you Klopp) but a risk worth taking.

Played it last season on the DGW got a score of 28 so was happy with that. As for the WC last year I went all out and got rid of SGW players for the DGW i.e Spurs assets and Siggy if memory serves and they ended up outscoring some of the DGW players. I still got a high score so it was a success but I think keeping in form sgw players is wise too. Of course it all depends on the scenario at the time but Il certainly think twice before dropping inform SGW players again.

    @Andy

You need to feed Costa/Hazard in to your captain calculation and then add a further intriguing possibility of Kane > Ibra (and back again)

Put Arsenal Chelsea Spurs(United) up to the top of the season ticker and then look at the captain options for months ahead. It's a mouth watering selection to compete against the Kun captain pick.

    Foster (Pickford)
    McAuley, Cedric, Lovren (Friend, Amat)
    Hazard, Sanchez, Mane, Phillips, Capoue
    Kun, Costa, Austin

Would've loved to have Siggy, but Hazard was the priority. Never gone without a premium defender before, but Kosc just wasn't doing it and Alonso didn't pass the eye test on Sat.

Got 6.6 in the bank for a midfielder.

Milner? Don't like to only rely on his pens
    Redmond? Hasn't scored much lately

Can't take Matic (3 Chelsea players already) and already have Zaha.

    Open to other suggestions

Why on earth would you take Matic even if you didn't have 3 Chelsea players?

Fer, Milner, Redmond and Snodgrass the best options imo. Sotons fixtures look good, so maybe Redmond?

I would say Matic is super reliable. He won't score 20 points in a GW but how many times this season did he score 5 or 6 points?

Anyhow, not a fan of Fer and Snodgrass. Will probably pick between Chadli, Redmond and Milner

    Cech - (Pickford)
    McAuley - Clyne - Fuchs - (Ake - Amat)
    Sanchez (C) - Walcott - Firmino - Hazard - Allen
    Aguero - Austin - (Barrow)

    1 FT, 0.4m ITB

Thinking I should leave as is unless Firmino injury is more serious than it seems. Otherwise, is anyone here in need of pruning?

Yeah just leave it like that. Then Sort your defence out next gw. Cedric and Alonso for Clyne and Fuchs

    Hi Guys

would like to share your opinions on the Coutinho --> Alli move.

Coutinho is the only Liverpool cover I have.
    I can't afford Kane

The mainstream move would be to do Coutinho --> Firminho but I like the idea of bringing a differential in here at some point and I liked how Alli played lately.

I remember last year, Kane and Alli point were highly connected. When Kane was racking up point, so was Alli. I am not sure Alli / kane price difference is worth it.

Then come the rotation risk matter. I think Alli might be rested at some point over Christman, but so will kane imo. History has shown Pochettino is not affraid at tall benching Kane and giving him a rest.

    What do you think?

Went Eriksen myself over Alli / Firmino.

I am still laughing at my Sanchez to Firmino, Austin to Giroud -4 before last GW. Moving arm band from Aguero to Cout as well as was worried Aguero wouldnt start. These things dont really upset. I find it pretty funny.

Redmond has been shambolic in terms of form
Rather get Zaha and upgrade De roon to rotate the fourth mid if that's a strategy you like to use.
