Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 17

With Harry Kane (11.3) recording a second successive blank at home to Hull City last night, his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Christian Eriksen (8.5) may well find himself vying for top spot in this week’s poll.

The 11% owned Dane’s recent form has been electrifying. Five goals and two assists over the last four Gameweeks makes him a strong armband option when Burnley drop by White Hart Lane on Sunday.

No player has had more goal attempts or more shots on target than Eriksen over that period.

Those who believe the absence of Mousa Dembele has contributed to to Kane’s troubles in front of goal will be keenly anticipating Mauricio Pochettino’s press conference for news of the Belgian’s return.

We’ll also be monitoring Antonio Conte for an update on the fitness of Eden Hazard (10.5) as Chelsea visit Crystal Palace this weekend. The 37.5% owned schemer missed the Blues’ 1-0 victory away to Sunderland with a minor injury and, if fit, could be a popular option against an Eagles side that still has just a single clean sheet to their name.

But given his erratic away form, which has seen him deliver only one of his four double-digit FPL points hauls on the road, Hazard’s 53% owned colleague Diego Costa (10.9) is surely likely to be a more popular captaincy choice.

The Spain international may have failed to find the net against Sunderland, but that was one of only three Gameweek blanks this season.

With a goal and assist against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 16, Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic is another set to garner support. However, the 27.6% owned Swede will not find it so easy when he visits a West Brom side that has conceded just four goals in their last quartet of league matches.

Goals look on the agenda when Arsenal visit Manchester City this weekend. The Gunners have scored 19 times on the road, while the home fans have witnessed their side notch 15 goals at the Etihad this season.

This puts Alexis Sanchez (11.8) firmly in the frame for top billing in this week’s poll. The 35.7% owned Chilean’s goal in the 2-1 loss away to Everton on Tuesday was his ninth on the road.

No player has been more prolific on their travels, who will be seeking a fifth double-figure away haul this weekend.

The Manchester City teamsheet is far more difficult to second guess, which may temper interest in assets such as the 9.7% owned Kevin De Bruyne (10.7), who registered an assist in City’s 2-0 victory over Watford in Gameweek 16.

The Merseyside derby also looks tough to call, with Ronald Koeman’s troops showing a determination and attacking edge against Arsenal that had been lacking in recent weeks. This could yet revive confidence in striker Romelu Lukaku (9.4), who ended a four-match scoring drought with a brace away to Watford in Gameweek 15.

Mid-price assets among the Liverpool ranks may offer further differential candidates for the armband.

In the absence the injured Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana (7.2) and Divock Origi (6.8) have excelled.

The England international, who tops the “transfers in” table this ahead of Saturday’s deadline, has registered three goals and an assist in his last two starts.

Meanwhile, Origi has netted in four successive Gameweeks and also supplied an assist away to ‘Boro last night. He’s expected to recover from the minor knock sustained late on at the Riverside.

Reds’ winger Sadio Mane (9.4), who has accrued four assists and a goal since Gameweek 13, is another potentially explosive option. The 20.7% owned Senegal international already has four double-digit hauls this season.

For those looking for differential armband picks, West Ham have three candidates on the menu ahead of the visit from a Hull City side which have conceded 20 goals on their travels, more than any other team.

Andy Carroll (6.1) and Michail Antonio (6.7) are set to be the Hammers main goal threat, with the former set to earn a second successive start having turned out against Burnley on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Dimitri Payet (9.1) offers strong assist potential, having created 22 chances for his team-mates over the last six Gameweeks, a tally bettered only by Sanchez.

Another strong alternative captaincy selection is Sunderland’s 24.8% owned Jermain Defoe (7.8), who will be looking to add to his eight goals when Watford visit Wearside. With Walter Mazzarri’s troops conceding 16 goals on the road this season, the veteran Black Cats striker looks a promising option.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll tomorrow when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

      Kante is a beast
How the hell did Monreal end that high up the stats?

Monreal is what I really found interesting. Kanté has a quite short history in PL, or anywhere, and there could as well be a factor of him being in the right place at the right time - although, if you compare the teams he has played in recently - Caen, Leicester, Chelsea - they have all won with a very healthy percentage when he was there, and been in trouble when not, so the correlation is pretty good.

But Monreal, his appearances are from several seasons and all for the same club, a one that has been doing well, yes, but has not won the title, mostly been finishing 4th in his time, he is a regular starter when fit, but has had periods of injuries. So there, I'd say there's a very good case to say that his presence really matters for Arsenal's success. And that's quite surprising.

It could be just that Arsenal does not have a decent cover for him. What I mean is that Monreal-Gibbs may be a pair of players with a particularly wide quality gap between them, so it's not that Monreal would be the best LB in the league, but that in the big clubs he is the one with the greatest difference of level to his deputy.

This is what we were talking about on the scoutcast a few weeks back. People are playing the money game more than the points game this season.

Conte has so far indicated that Hazard will be fine and was only out for one game - he has cpl then BOU next and people are removing. Makes no sense in terms of how I've always thought Fantasy Football should be played.

But this season is proving a tricky one with more FPL managers, and more willing to leap on last week's bandwagons.

I'm sitting tight muttering to myself, "what would Villa Ronke do" over again, remembering how he got Sanchez's WHU haul as he kept him through the tough weeks.

I reckon he'll try to get him in this week or next. That would be a classic Ronka move. He hates 2-3 week bandwagons - loves the old stagers.

Fairly certain, looking at the changes in his SV and ITB that this week he's sold Firmino for Eriksen. So still no Hazard for him. How sad am I on a scale of 1 to 10 to have bothered to check that? (1 = the Fonz, 10 = the exact opposite)

Yeah, I get that. I just posted this on another thread...

I don't agree that he's the best in the world. He's never won. 90th was his highest rank. So what if he spent the last 8 years here learning the game and slow playing it. Sure, that's how he's consistently in the top 5k, but he clearly doesn't have the cutting edge to take him to the top.

Sure that is one way to look at it. Personally I don't have any (realistic) hopes of ever winning the whole thing, so I just see him as a consistently amazing FPL, whom I might be able to learn from.

Some would argue that he is the "best" player, as ending number one would have something to do with luck as well, but getting an amazing OR year after year takes real skill.

I think it would be unwise to sell unless the injuries were serious, and they do not seem to be serious. Losing 0.1 (and I am terribly driven in strategy by money, to a fault) on players who very well may play is okay.

However, take Hazard for example: If you feel that Hazard is not producing on par with his value, and that you do not feel he is likely to produce given his form and fixtures in the future, and that there are more attractive mids, then by all means sell (but not for a -4).

          Thanks.
I am keeping, as I see Hazard as a season keeper. Yes, he had a few weeks without many returns, but whenever I see him play he looks dangerous. You could also argue that the games have been quite tough and with his upcoming fixtures I can really see him performing.

He is still the second highest scoring midfielder as well, although he of course need to keep getting returns to justify his price.

I'm keeping both. Both are players who have high potential for points over the coming weeks. And I would say that at least one of them starts this weekend. I have 5 defenders with good fixtures as cover with Alonso, Holebas, Pieters, Cedric, Amat. Do it makes no sense to sell

        1. Licious Lizard

Agreed. Keeping as well. Just wanted other peoples' takes on it, as I can't understand why on earth people are selling those two unless you can't field 11 players if they are not starting.

          Great fixtures for both.

        holding both.
Hazard key member of a side in great form.
Cedric still a sound buy and if he is a problem going forward a lot of defenders available at under 4.8m to come in for him. He'd probably be on my bench this week anyway.

Cedric has great stats but doesn't deliver and southampton can't score at the minute. I'd get brunt in who takes set pieces and is in a strong defensive team.

Absolutely nuts to ditch both in my opinion, hazard is back and has the ability to destroy teams. Cedric was injured and then ill if I'm not mistaken. If anything I'd say he's more nailed on now.

Thanks, YMA. Good to hear I am not the only one thinking this.
Hazard two home games in next 3 and the away fixture is against a leaky Palace side.
Cedric good long term fixtures as well and can see them bag a few cleanses + a bit of attacking threat and not a stranger to baps.

If you haven't got Eriksen in your midfield and your holding Hazard then that is crazy. Hazard is poor away from home and Pardew is going to tell his players to kick lumps out of him..

I don't have Eriksen, but I Think Hazard is a better option long term.
2 out of next 3 are home games and Pardew's boys make kick him 😉 , but are very leaky at the back...

It's the season for hits and getting the players in at the right time. Costa is the man for Chelsea if not Costa then a Defender.

Hazard blanked twice and yes he has the potential to explode but i've gotten rid of both Hazard and sanchez int he last couple of weeks and i've shot up 20,000 ranking spots... I've taken more hits this season than ever and im having the best season ever. I know most of it might be pure luck but i'm taking gambles and its paying off...

I've sat around in previous seasons telling myself they will do something eventually but it costs you in the long run I think especially this season..
but that;s my view maybe i'm wrong i don't know...

Yeah I think we have different tactics regarding Sanchez and Hazard. Can't see any logic in shipping Sanchez to be honest. One of the best run of fixtures in the league coming up, great form, OOP for a goal scoring team and a viable captaincy option in many GWs.
Regarding Hazard, I agree he hasn't been producing points lately, but he has still seemed very dangerous in most of the games I have watched him in lately. Made the mistake earlier this season shipping both of them after a few bad GWs and personally trying to avoid making the same mistakes again. Hazard can easily come good with Palace + 2 home games in next 3. Quality player, Chelsea is great form, on pens.

Both two of the best long term midfield option in the league imo - even with their hefty price tags. I guess we will have to wait and see what tactic pays off 🙂 Good luck

Yeah this is part of the reason I promised myself to be a bit more patient with these 2. Did the same think with both Hazard and Sanchez early in the season. Bomber had a post a few weeks ago, trying to get people to play the Hazard-Sanchez game (before Sanchez 23-point score). The game was to see how many transfers you have spent on them both combined and looking at how many points you have had of each to their total. Very eye-opening for me at least. With the quality of these two players and the quality of their teams, I am trying to be more patient with these two at least.

Chelsea TV are saying that the issue with Hazard was minor. I'd expect him to be back this weekend most likely. So I'm nowhere near removing him.

Cedric is another matter, we don't have a reading on his illness (do we?) and Southampton have a crucifying holiday schedule (GW18-20). Unless I was certain he'd play this weekend I'd probably sell him if I had him.

          Cheers, Ruth.
I haven't heard any concrete information that would make me think that Hazard is out for the weekend. Great pick imo.

Regarding Cedric, I still think he could be a good long term pick. I at least think their fixtures looks quite good for the next 9-11 GWs. He should be first choice when fully fit and has shown more attacking threat than his point return suggests imo. Also he gets the occasional baps. But it depends on the rest of your defence as well of course, but I can't see a reason to ship him before we get any indication that he shouldn't start this weekend.

I own both and am not feeling a need to ship them without more information, but in reading the comments the disdain for "playing the money game" might not be that well-founded.

Those who catch early risers aren't just building TV, or chasing last week's points, they are also trying to catch form that the masses are attracted to. I don't think there is any conclusive evidence to prove that one of form, fixtures, or class is better than others in terms of predicting future FPL points. This site is dominated by arguments in favor of each of them, from last week's Eriksen v Payet discussions, to arguments about whether a player is a season keeper, to the Frisking the Fixtures articles that are a staple of FFS.

I would suggest that it is figuring out the combination of the three and identifying which spots in your squad require you to follow or chase one of form, fixtures, or class, that are the best indicators of successful management.

Thanks for the response and an insightful post.

I agree that you need to take all these things into account. I can't remember who, but earlier this season someone posted a very thorough analysis of whether price rises/price falls were any indication of future points. As I recall the results were quite clear and pointing towards that price rises/fall were actually a decent indicator of returns.
That being said, I am still keeping Hazard even though he is likely to fall in price over the coming days.

That's a fair assessment however I don't see any value in you second guessing anyone's transfers in hindsight.

I would expect we could learn from his mistakes and apply a constructive strategy to succeed from them without unnecessary hubris.

Winning FPL requires skill but also a whole load of luck. Last year's winner was in his first year - claimed his only strategy was 'following his gut'. He had no experience of playing FPL and very little skill other than to captain Leicester and Spurs players regularly.

Burnley has easily the worst defence in the league for conceding shots. Do you really think Heaton is god-tier or just that he faces twice as many shots as the average keeper on any given day. He'll keep most of them out, but it's long proven that he can't keep them all out. There's a very good chance Spurs score a few at home to Burnley, and Kane's the most likely candidate.

Those tap ins are the thing. As long as he gets tap in chances, he gets goals. I wouldn't like a FPL striker who relies on his shot quality only.

Check all his chances against Swans. He should have scored three.

I missed most of it from behind the sofa. Saw the stats and brought him in after for his last two and the eye test has not been favourable.

Ergo, Swansea away fixtures should be struck from any statistical analysis!

It's typical Kane. He is a goalscorer. One of the best. He often looks very limited but give him chances and he will score goals.

I agree that he was super disappointing against Hull, not even close to get anything out of it.

Should have got on the end of that Walker cross before Eriksen tapped in. Agree he was poor overall in that game though.

Any United fans think Pogba will continue playing in an advanced role? Potential bargain at 8.2 if he does

Yes I think he will and very unlikely to be rested imo.

Could be a brilliant differential. I am just not completely convince that they will score enough goals. I have Zlatan too, so a double up for me would be too much 🙂

They give the impression they will never quite be as free scoring as Liverpool or City etc, but Pogba always has an eye for goals and assists, really underrated on here.

I think he will come good as well. But their form hasn't been consistent enough so far. But I truly believe it will click at some point and he will start racking up points.

Mou doesn't trust any of the others. With Carrick:

              Carrick - Herrera
              Pogba

              Without:

              Pogba - Herrera
              (Rooney)

Origi plays for the team that scores loads of goals. When/If he loses his place you can go Caroll or someone else.

Even if he explodes it will be for one game and then a run of assists again. I had him for 5/6 weeks and got nothing so I sold but for Sanchez. Don't know your alternatives.

I'm patiently biding my time, he's capable of multiple goals/assist games but has been so frustrating. I dropped Hazard for him towards the start of the season when Eden wasn't performing and don't want to reverse the decision. I know as soon as I get rid he will produce a brace, if there's one thing this season has taught me it's to be patient. I got rid of Hazard and Mane at the start of the season when they blanked for 3 weeks in a row, they've turned into two of the best scorers.

Basically it's the attacking threat of Holebas against a poor Sunderland defense or Pieters with the better defense against a poor traveling Leicester side. If Cedric misses out again, it doesn't matter
