What the Fixtures, Form and Clean Sheets Say – Gameweek 18

This article aims to help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers in their choice for the best captaincy option for the forthcoming Gameweek by combining form and fixtures.

Additionally, I have also included clean sheet odds to help assess the Gameweek’s best defensive assets.

In Gameweek 17, the model’s top pick, Christian Eriksen, frustratingly failed to deliver attacking returns in what was a well fought 2-1 win over Burnley.

This means that this strategy now has a six out of 10 success rate. (Success is derived from whether the model’s top pick delivers attacking returns or not. However, this will be reviewed, to see whether a new method of success can be found. Any suggestions are still most appreciated).

The clean sheet analysis fared much better, West Ham, Chelsea and Middlesbrough all featured inside the top five most likely to keep a clean sheet, according to the clean sheet method. Manchester United and Tottenham only conceded one goal each, to complete the top 5.

Before I take a look at Gameweek 18’s best captaincy targets, let’s have a quick recap on how I use form and fixtures to come to achieve this.

REFINING THE METHOD

The captaincy section will now focus completely on the form and fixtures elements and remove the odds section altogether.

For this method, I am going to take the 10 most popular captaincy options (at time of writing), according to the FFScout captaincy poll and rank them 1-10 ranking according to the difficulty of the fixture, which is worked out using goals conceded, big chances conceded and goal attempts in the box conceded from the last four games.

I then apply the same ranking to form, looking at points per game, goals and assists over the last four games. This article will now factor in the players PPG from their last 2 home and last 2 away games respectively, higher weighting will be given according to the player’s fixture. Eg if a player is playing in an away fixture, their away PPG will be taken into account, if 2 players PPG’s are still the same, then the players total PPG will be taken into account.

The article will now include the ‘clean sheet potential’ table, which is worked out with the form and fixtures elements from the captaincy section and then combined with clean sheet odds to give a total ranking based on clean sheet potential. This section will include the top 10 teams.

With all that in mind, let’s take at Gameweek 18’s results

Analysis

Taking form and fixtures into account, Gylfi Sigurdsson is the surprising, yet runaway leader to deliver attacking returns this Gameweek.

The dead ball specialist tops the fixture list as he welcomes a porous West Ham backline to the Liberty Stadium. The Hammers have conceded seven goals, given up eight big chances and allowed opponents 43 goal attempts in the box in the last four Gameweeks.

The Icelandic also tops the form table,  as his last two home appearances have returned an impressive 11.5 PPG. These factors combined makes him the standout captaincy option, according to this method.

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez offers this week’s form vs fixture dilemma.

His 9.5 home PPG catapults him to second in the form table. However, the Chilean faces a West Brom side who have only conceded five goals, six big chances and 26 goal attempts in the last four Gameweeks, which drops him to joint second lowest on the fixture table. It may be worth nothing that West Brom have only conceded nine goals in eight away games this season –  an impressive ratio of just 1.125.

This method urges caution when it comes to Zlatan Ibrahimovic this week.

The big Swede sits at a very surprising ninth overall in the results table and faces a Sunderland side that has conceded just five goals, five big chances and 35 goal attempts in the box in the last four Game weeks.

Interestingly Sunderland have only conceded 11 goals in eight away games all season, at a ratio of just 1.375. Added to this, the teams they have faced on their travels include Manchester City, Southampton, Tottenham, Liverpool and Bournemouth. The Swede has a home PPG of just 5.5, which sits him at seventh in the form list, perhaps enough to deter would be captainers this week.

Finally, here’s a look at the best defences to invest in for Gameweek 18, with Chelsea unsurprisingly at the summit. A Blues double up at the back could offer strong returns.

Well that's a surprise...but a nice one for this Gylfi owner.

Little worried about the Ibrahimovic captaincy now.

      +1 on both Jonty.

Was very surprised to see how high up Siggy is and how low Ibra is. I don't think I will change my captain choice though. Captaining Siggy is a brave move.

Well, I've Siggy & Sanchez (the only Home players of my starting XI), and I think I'll go for Sanchez (whether he goes crazy himself, if there are goals then chances are he'll have a hand in them all & BPs are always welcome).

I've Pickford in goal, so happy to see Ibra flop.

Oddly the Swa v Sunderland game now gives me hope for both Zlatan and Siggy. The Black Cats conceded three in that game with Llorente prospering. Shows that Swansea are good at home against poor defences and that Sunderland are not as tight as the overall stats suggest.

Sunderland will have gone into that game, more attack minded thinking they can win. Away to the bigger teams they have been very defensive which explains the stats. Whilst I'm feeling good having Siggy in my team now I don't think I can captain him although am tempted.

It all comes down to, if Sunderland go on the defensive how good United are at breaking those sort of teams down and if they do how many they could score. Certainly united aren't winning games by 3,4-0 often but boxing day matches can be funny.

Surely the defensive stats for West Ham have improved over the last couple fixtures, i know it was against Burnley and Hull but i would place Swansea in that same lower team bracket. Not sure if Sigurdsson is the best choice....

Planning a -4 after boxing day (Amat+Hazard > Alonso+Coutinho) to leave me with the team below. Then Kane to Costa after that. May all change but it's a plan. What you think?

    Heaton (Jaku)
Walker - Lovren - Alonso (Pieters, Evans)
Sanchez - Coutinho - Siggy - Eriksen (Capoue)
    Kane - Carroll - Zlatan

    Bottomed on previous post.

Are any of these transfers a good shout? If so, which is best? I'm not keen on all the rotation if it helps.

    A. Cedric or McAuley to Jones (straight swap using ft)
B Same as above to Valencia (expensive and can only do by 'downgrading' Payet to Walcott -4)
    C. Foster to DDG (again, requires some movement, -4)

Thanks for this article by the way, always healthy to bet against your own team - then you can't be too disappointed!

I adjusted this somewhat, as I felt ranking goals conceded equal to goal attempts a bit wrong.
So, I weighted GC by 4, BCC by 2, end ended up with this:

    Rank // Name // Points
    1 Sigurdsson 4
    2 Benteke 5
    3 Payet 7
    4 Sanchez 8
    5 Mane 9
    5 Walcott 9
    7 Hazard 14
    8 Ibrahimovic 15

    10 Kane 19

I don't understand when people say dare to captain Siggy, is it because he's not top of the poll or playing for a big team? The poll hasn't been consistently right yet we feel more comfortable following the herd as opposed to picking a player who dominates Swansea's points and is at home against poor opposition. Oh and he's on pens as well

Not a fan of this model. You've highlighted Sigurdsson's home PPG but imo how do pts gained vs SUN (for example) improve or decrease his chances of getting pts v WHU who have kept CS playing 3-4-3.

Looking at things like Home form and Away form really is irrelevant IMO but always is an interesting read before a GWK so thanks YMA

Appreciate your comments about home and away PPG, it's purely to highlght if players perform better home or away or not. I think I am going to go back to total PPG but keep the home/away ppg on the table for stats purposes. I may switch it round and work it on total ppg but if 2 players overall PPG are the same, then the home/away PPG comes into play. I think that;s better

Yeah, I agree that form as it is judged now is not good. 2 games is too few. What you suggested sounds good.

Form over fixture has been the mantra for fpl for years but the method in this article put them on equal weighting. I think a change is needed for this too.

As a happy Eriksen (C) boy 2 weeks ago I was toying with Siggy (C) and this justifies it. Hull were absolutely battering West Ham the other day on their own turf. Swansea can score goals at home and really really need a result.

Sadly I may well have to play Amat in this as well - I think it could be a goal fest.

Yeah, that's the problem. What do you do when a system delivers such a counter-intuitive result?

TL has the same thing with his "bonkers" system. Sometimes it is very good. Other times it delivers outcomes which look, well, bonkers.

I guess it's that there are all kinds of subtle things that we read and consider (as well as biases we have) that don't show up in a system. Sometimes the system will point out what we have forgotten or under-estimated. Other times it will fail to take account of things we can see but it can't.

On the "what is a success" thing, honestly I think a success is to pick the best of the 10 candidates. But then of course any success ratio of 20% or better would be remarkably good.

If you want a more median success criterion, how about 7+ points? If you are getting that from a captain you can never complain, the top managers usually average between 6 and 7 from captaincy over a season from what I have seen.

    And merry Xmas. 🙂

I do agree with you, I guess this is trying to show the best captain for the gameweek and it did have a ridiculous record at the start. Perhaps I tinkered with the whole system trying to appease everyone and should go back to how it was before. 6 options was an acceptable sample size but stick to keeping it without odds 😉

I like the 7+ point system, possibly a little low considering any attacking returns will likely just about garner that result anyway with potential bonus? It's certainly better than just 'attacking returns' for sure.

Gonna have a break now and comeback in the New Year.

      Merry Christmas. Giggity

I like the last part, having a minimum target for success would be easier to assess. Perhaps there could be a tier structure for success , 4-6 OK, 7-9 good etc.
Something like that could then be compared to the others returns for that week to see how it rated. As opposed to the black and white of success or fail.
Would be interesting to know what is regarded as a good cap return average over a season which might help give YMA a basis for the rating

Nice work once again, YMA. I commented on trying to find the weighting for the different categories in last week's article, but as you reflect in the New Year a few ideas to consider.

I agree with Ruth NZ and JTD -- to define success, maybe use the standards that most of us would use for our own teams:
Excellent is getting the best pick of the top 6, Success is getting some attacking returns, some kind of tiers. But a high enough standard to judge a really excellent pick might be helpful, probably at least 8-10 points.

As for the categories themselves, maybe you could also look over the articles from the past and see which indicators -- form, fixtures, or bookies -- were the most successful so far. Who knows if home vs away PPG is that accurate, but a review of the first few months could show some trends.

Just to add to the definition of success, I had a look at past FFscout captain poll results for 2015/16 and YTD 16/17 seasons; it was interesting to learn that the no.1 captain picks scored 6-7 pts (before 2x) on average or ~240 pts in total (consistent with Ruth's remark as most top mgrs do follow the poll quite closely).

7+ weekly score seems like a very good hurdle to beat.

Alternatively, we could just benchmark against the captain poll and compare the cumulative total pts over a period of time. It appears to me YMA's method has done quite well, particularly during the early weeks. Hazard pick in Gw11 was a standout option.

YMA Picks / FFS Capt Poll (no1):
      Gw 8 - Costa (9) / Sanchez (5)
      Gw 9 - Lukaku (5) / Sanchez (3)
      Gw 10 - Sanchez (13) / Sanchez (13)
      Gw 11 - Hazard (19) / Aguero (6)
      Gw 12 - Lukaku (2) / Aguero (2)
      Gw 13 - Firmino (3) / Aguero (6)
      Gw 14 - Kane (13) / Kane (13)
      Gw 15 - Mane* (8) / Sanchez (5)
      Gw 16 - Kane (2) / Kane (2)
      Gw 17 - Eriksen (2) / Kane (2)

Total YMA: 76 / Total FFS Capt Poll: 57
Avg YMA: 7.6 / Avg FFS Capt Poll: 5.7

*I noted that odds was excluded from Gw15 onwards. Gw15 would have favored Firmino over Mane if we had included bookie odds as a consideration.

Fantastic post. Thankyou so much! Seems I have done better than I had thought compared to the captain poll leader. Really really apreciate it. I think 7+ could well be the way to go

This information is gold. It is clear that there is only a 1 in 17 chance of losing points against the top polling captain, and even then it is only by 3 points.

That is more than enough data to prove that it will be actually far riskier going for Ibrahimovic than Siggy, regardless of what emotion tells us.

For that reason I am spending Boxing Day with Captain Siggy Stardust!

West Ham is coming out of a bad run of injuries. The team is more solid now and won't concede as much.

    Great work...thanks.

Do the clean sheet tables differentiate between form, home and away....specifically Burnley at home ? Surprised they aren't top 10 for a clean sheet against Boro.

Hmm, currently on Zlatan captain but now looking to shift to Sanchez, what do you think?

I think Zlatan in his prime was better than Aguero will ever be.

He may be on the downslope now but he's only declining very slowly. After 8 days rest against Sunderland he looks a pretty obvious captain to me.

He's very hard to bet against this week, he's in good form as are United (who seem to have found their best team)

Sods law is he blanks because most will be captaining him 🙂

Yeah, for the last 2 weeks I have been itching to captain him but allowed my head (and Kane's fixtures) to overrule that.

Doubtless now it's on Zlatan, Kane will outscore him. 🙂
