Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 25 – The Weak

After picking out the teams facing the kindest schedules over the next four-to-six Gameweeks yesterday, our focus now turns to those who may struggle over that same period.

The threat of blanks provides a real concern for Manchester City players, while a severe lack of form and a treacherous fixture list means that Liverpool’s appeal is unlikely to stage a recovery following wretched form.

Manchester City

(bou, (bla), sun, STO, LIV, ars)

City are already without a fixture in Gameweek 26 and, if they see off Huddersfield Town in the fifth round of the FA Cup as expected, they’ll also have another blank in Gameweek 28, with their Etihad clash against Stoke City postponed and rescheduled.

That would leave Pep Guardiola’s side with just one home match in seven Gameweeks, and that is against Liverpool.

So while those that have recently invested in the in-form Gabriel Jesus could profit in the upcoming matches against Bournemouth and Sunderland, particularly given that the Cherries have conceded more goals (13) than any other team over the last four Gameweeks, he does come packaged with a major caveat.

The clashes against Liverpool and Arsenal aren’t particularly favourable either, so should you also own a number of Arsenal and Manchester United players, who are also without a fixture in Gameweek 26, and perhaps Gameweek 28, investing in City players will present unwanted headaches further down the line.

City defenders haven’t been strong Fantasy options throughout the season, and with the blanks, along with the continued threat of rotation around Champions League ties, that looks set to remain the case over the upcoming period.

Liverpool

(TOT, lei, ARS, BUR, mci, EVE)

The Reds face a very testing run over the next six Gameweeks, coming up against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, City and Everton, while their easiest fixture, at home to Burnley in Gameweek 28, will be moved if the Clarets progress past Lincoln City in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Given that Jurgen Klopp’s side are also in abject form, there currently looks little appeal in owning any Liverpool player.

Only the Leicester City and Burnley match-ups look kind from an attacking perspective in the next six, and given that the latter fixture may be postponed, the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana could all continue to struggle for attacking points.

Liverpool have conceded seven goals in their last four matches, and look very unlikely to keep clean sheets over the next month or so.

Everton, Arsenal, City and Spurs all rank among the top six for goals scored over the last four Gameweeks, so it’s only the Leicester match-up that looks to offer a decent possibility for a shut-out.

Those that have the likes of Nathaniel Clyne or Dejan Lovren in their five-man backlines will surely be making alternative plans, then.

Stoke City

(CPL, tot, MID, mci, CHE, lei)

Once Saturday’s home clash against Crystal Palace is out of the way, the outlook for the Potters is pretty bleak all the way up to Gameweek 32.

As already mentioned, the City fixture could present a blank in Gameweek 28, while the clashes against Spurs and Chelsea aren’t likely to yield many points for Stoke in defence or attack.

Given his budget price tag, Peter Crouch’s 6% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) may be happy to hold, with the fixtures against Middlesbrough and Leicester City offering some respite.

But the forward was replaced by Saido Berahino before the hour mark last weekend, with the January signing likely to be pushing for a start over the next few matches.

Again, those who own a Stoke defender may be happy to hold if the rest of your backline is in good shape when Mark Hughes’ men face their difficult fixtures, given that defensive returns appear possible against Palace, ‘Boro and Leicester.

But it’s asking a lot of Erik Pieters over the coming period, and there’s certainly no appeal for FPL bosses to invest in Potters defenders at this juncture.

Also be wary of…

Crystal Palace
Sam Allardyce’s men need to find some form quickly, as their schedule turns particularly tricky very soon.

That Gameweek 28 clash against Spurs could, of course, be a blank if Spurs beat Fulham in the fifth round of the FA Cup, but Palace also face unfavourable matches against Chelsea and Arsenal.

The fixtures in the short-term (sto, MID, wba) are more reasonable, although taking their current form into account, those ties are unlikely to be enough for the majority of Fantasy managers to consider Palace players.

Those who own the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke may be happy to hold for the next three Gameweeks, then, but last weekend’s 4-0 defeat to Sunderland has dented confidence in the Eagles’ backline, despite the attacking potential of Patrick van Aanholt, Scott Dann and Jeffrey Schlupp.

Bournemouth
While the Cherries do have a guaranteed fixture in Gameweek 28, at home to West Ham, and also host Swansea in Gameweek 29, the unfavourable nature of their remaining matches (MCI, wba, mun, sot) over the next six places huge importance on those two Vitality fixtures.

The run between Gameweeks 30 and 33 (sot, liv, CHE, tot) looks particularly gruelling, so we ideally need to shed their assets by that point.

The value offered by Josh King, particularly if he is retained in the lone striker role, could see him emerge as a decent option, but Junior Stanislas’ 3.4% ownership in FPL will hope he earns a recall before those two home fixtures after being dropped against Everton.

From a defensive standpoint, it’s hard to see Cherries defenders picking up any clean sheet points in the next three. They’ll need to improve markedly to muster shut-outs against West Ham and Swansea but, given their recent form, the Cherries backline offers little appeal, even with the guaranteed Gameweek 28 fixture.

Personally, Grant as I can see him keeping a cleanie, but if he doesn't then I think Hennessy will get more save points. So if you see both scoring I'd go with Hennessy.

                  But yeah, Grant for me.

everyone has a 5 man midfield.

Morrison will have to play during the blank weeks. so will King and Snodgrass.

i think Morrison is an ok pick in isolation, but not in a midfield that also includes King and Snodgrass.

I have been ranting of late about a seemingly lemming like hunt for TV over points. Players switching players to avoid a .1 loss with little regard for how the disposed of player may do in the next game week.
If your aim is to attain a high TV ( a boast of sorts) fair enough
But if you think this will ensure a top rank you are most likely to be disappointed.
Players that win FPL have never had more than average TVs , does this not tell you something?
Sure try and build Tv in the early stages , but know when to cast aside this pursuit and focus on the main object
    Over and out

It's not "a boast of sorts", it's so very easy to do that you might as well boast about being able to count.

There was a guy on twitter last season who realised going into GW38 that he wasn't going to make the top 100k. "I have £112m of players in my team", he wrote. "Wtf, is FPL broken or something?"

True. And every season we see comments "I had money for X he
only for Y" lol . Y was the man. Towards the end of season many a "y" player outscores the big guns. Think we all try where we can to increase TV. But with a short run in left it's the last thing to look at

One thing though, this game makes you work very hard if you have a low TV. I couldn't and still can't afford Haz, Alexis, Ibra, Kane or whomever. I had to look fairly hard to find equivalent explosive differentials. If life gets in the way or you need to just tune out for a week or two, a high TV is very helpful as you can get the usual suspects and re-assess in a few weeks. But that can also make you lazy and only look at the bigger teams.

Also, there is almost never a good time to get rid of Hazard/Alexis and so you will always keep them if you can afford them. With a low TV, I know I have to get rid of Alexis to stay competitive. A midfield of Stan Phillips and Capoo will not cut it while I bench Alexis. Also presents me with an opportunity to may be make up points elsewhere while everyone benches him and Ibra. It's very risky, it's nerve-wracking and can get me complaining often, but it's fun too.

      1. Debauchy
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 2 months ago

Certainly. Great to have a decent TV no doubt.
But a decent TV will allow you to have the hitters you want and then use your acumen to identify 1 or 2 .lower priced players that can carry you through.
Again- look at previous winners , all with moderate TVs , does that not "tell the story"

This is true, but I think there are relatively painless ways around it. To me, the key is finding the value alternative to the big hitters that allows you to have 14 of the same 15 players that someone with higher TV has instead of being weaker in multiple areas.

For instance, Walcott instead of Sanchez when Walcott was hot; Sterling instead of KDB; Pedro instead of Hazard at certain times; Snodgrass instead of Antonio (for the upcoming stretch); Lallana instead of Firm/Cout for long stretches this season.

Yes, that's not as easy as setting and forgetting Sanchez or KDB or Hazard or Antonio or Firmino, but I've also not had to take 92 points in hits to accumulate TV.

I think I've debated this to death with you before so I'll just say this: Higher TV gives you more options, that's why we like it.

But you've accumulated TV through very few hits - just smart transfers. That's a magical way to have done it. You deserve a lot of credit, Lawro.

I think the issue is with folks who seem to actively chase TV, end up with over 100 points in hits, and wonder why their rank is suffering.

Sometimes early on in the season I would sacrifice for a .2 drop versus a potential .2 rise , and so on.
What I am really trying to stress Is that the the time for the TV hunt is over. If you dont start focusing on points now , when will you

Well, you might gain some value but you might miss out on some points making early transfers. Thats my point, but if your strategy works long term, keep continuing..
Most important is to have a strategy and enjoy the game though.. 😉

Yeah , but in early stages you can risk losing points more to try and increase value. At this stage with so few games left increases or decreases in Value should be totally irrelevant in your pursuit of points

      As always.

Just make the best team you can with the original 100mill budget...sit back...admire....and then wonder why we need a good TV.

The problem is we don't accept how much the game changes throughout the season and stick hold of old favourites (that rose) for too long. That doesn't mean that the high TV team has become rubbish but nor does it mean a cheaper team can't be equally good...or better.

      1. Debauchy
        • 11 Years

Doc, agree. Of course a higher TV team will make it easier to attain a decent ranking. But just saying there comes a time where you need to move on with your high TV or your average TV and focus on the points , And as history tells its most often those with moderate TVs that prevail
Looking forward to verification again at season end

Hi guys, I'm wondering if I should take a hit to get in Baines or Coleman. 0FT 1.2ITB

    Heaton (Pickford)
    McAuley Jones Cédric (Lovren Janmaat)
    Eriksen Philips Sigurdsson Sánchez Alli
    Ibrahimovic Lukaku (Diomande)

Somebody asking about KDB > Hazard.

Every season somebody is unlucky enough to hit the woodwork more than any other player. Usually they stop hitting the woodwork after a whole and they start going in again.

    Keep KDB.

Sterling's the one I'm gonna be getting for their DGW's. Eight assists and a goal in his last nine and looking nailed on.

It's the old problem though of is it actually unlucky, as they are off target shots. Might need to adjust his shooting boots slightly. I remember when the same used to happen to Suarez. And we know how he turned out in the end.

Pelle did it a couple of years ago. He scored quite well and then went on a run of woodwork....he came good again but we were into DGW time by then so we never really returned to him.
