FFS Cup

FFScout Cups – Results and Third Round Draws

Our two Fantasy Football Scout cup competitions are progressing at lightning pace as we look back on the events of the midweek’s second round and ahead to round three, which kicks off on Saturday.

There were mixed fortunes for some former winners of our open to all cup, with reigning champion A Manager Has No Name among those to go through to the next round. He saw off community regular Krul runnings to set himself up with a clash with What Divock?!, who, with an overall rank of 69,987, is 42,738 places higher.

Among the other champions, Wild Rover and Donnellyc also prevailed, as did Mark, who squares up to tkmlim.

Of this trio, Mark – who is ranked 542 overall – can feel the most confident, given that his opponent is placed 66,102 places behind him.

However, the same cannot be said of 42,422-ranked Wild Rover, who faces the cup’s highest placed manager pitstop1 – he sits in 123rd spot.

There is also a seismic gap in the tie involving 284,826-ranked donnellyc and his opponent Who Divock Is Origi, who is comfortably in the top 10,000 at 6,139.

Sadly, I exit at this early stage, with Not Much Klopp’s score of 70 proving too much for my 50-point tally. Gribude joins me through the door, after being defeated 56-50 by Footopia.

Joining Mark as one of our live Hall of Fame representatives to survive is Dronny Imp, aka David Meechan, who progressed past Legomane 65-59 to take on Jurgen Can Karius, who, at 931,186, is the clear underdog given David’s pedigree and current 4,767 rank.

Another elite manager to make the cut is My Pretty Pony, aka Peter Kouewenberg, who is third in our live Hall of Fame and earns a third round encounter with Prophet.

This is another favourable clash for one of our top veterans, given that Peter’s opponent is ranked 262,527 places below his 1,567 ranking.

Top Marx, whose regular community analysis of the Hall of Fame involves some enlightening conversations with Peter, also makes it through and takes on Citizen Z.

The full third round draw can be found here.

Meanwhile, in our Members cup there will be a new name on the trophy after both former winners were dispatched.

Fuzzy Dunlop was beaten 60—56 by community veteran Parm, while Trigg was sent packing by Fenghh.

Billy Ketsu had a week to forget, after losing his place at the summit of the FFScout Members league and tasting defeat in his cup draw against Doctor 101.

Sleep Talk, who was beaten in round one of the open to all cup by Mark, is having better luck in the Members Cup, where he overcame Ma3jdw. This 38,164-ranked manager will now face 52,905-placed AT in the third round.

Another eye catching tie is community regulars FrankieTheGent and Hybrid.power’s clash.

There is also the chance of a giant killing for 56,534 ranked Rickytoso, who squares up to the Members cup’s highest-ranked manager Pukka, who is placed at 78th in the world.

The full third round draw can be found here.

There is £350 in Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk vouchers up for grabs for the final top three managers in both tournaments.

Good luck to all those involved and if you would like more information on the schedule and prizes click this link.

      Personally I'd save the transfer.

The only thing that would worry me is not having Aguero versus Hull.

If your opponent has Aguero then it might make sense to get him but it's a coin toss between Lukuka and Vardy to get him in.

Probably Vardy for him but he is in very good form.

Those captaining Alli/Eriksen, aren't you put off by the short turnaround between matches? Guys like Alexis, Zlatan will have two days extra rest.

Can't believe I got knocked out the cup with 75 points! My opponent got the same score (via his bench subs) but went through on OR which seems pretty harsh for us with terrible ranking!

I don't think OR should count; it's a cup competition after all. Better to go on goals scored or something like that.

So a few days ago I posted some findings based on stats, that helped me to determine that Alli was a good captain choice for the midweek games. It was a close call but in the end he came through, and along with Eriksen and Vardy getting among the points and Sanchez not it all seemed to back up what I’d posted: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/15349830

So I thought I’d do it again, in case this is a viable method of picking captaincy and others might be interested. Obviously though, stats and history are just that, they’re only guidelines rather than rules 🙂

I’ve picked a number of people from the captain’s poll, and analysed them below, based not just on stats, but on team form and recent game history as well.

    ALLI vs Watford

    - Tottenham Hotspur have never lost in the Premier League against Watford, winning five of seven encounters (D2).
    - Dele Alli scored twice against Watford at Vicarage Road in January in a 4-1 win and assisted the winner in this exact fixture last season for Kieran Trippier.
    - Spurs are unbeaten in 15 successive league home games (W13 D2 L0); their best run in league competition since May 2011 (17 games).
    - Mauricio Pochettino’s side have scored in every one of their last 23 Premier League matches at White Hart Lane – a run that stretches back to January 16th 2016.
    - Watford have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League away games and haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last nine on the road in the competition.
    - Alli has 3 goals and 1 assist in his last 5 league games
    - He has 4 goals and 4 assists in his last 5 in all competitions
    - When Spurs played Watford earlier in the season it was 1-0, with Alli getting an assist, though he only came on in the 61st minute (and assisted in the 64th)
    - In terms of form over the last 5, Tottenham are top of the pile with 14 goals scored and only 4 conceded. Watford are 12th with 7 goals scored and 6 conceded.
    - Tottenham are also top in terms of home form this season, with 35 goals scored and only 8 conceded in 15 games. Watford are 12th in away matches, with 12 goals scored and 25 conceded in 14 games.

    ERIKSEN vs Watford

    - See above for general Spurs stats
    - In his last 5 matches in all competitions at home, Eriksen has scored 3 goals and has 5 assists
    - Eriksen has created more chances in the premier league this season than any other player (85)

    IBRA vs Sunderland

    - Sunderland have lost 22 times against Manchester United in the Premier League – against no side have they suffered more Premier League defeats (also 22 against Chelsea).
    - Manchester United haven’t won any of their last three games at the Stadium of Light in all competitions (D1 L2), this after an unbeaten run of 11 matches there.
    - Manchester United have won six and lost none of their last eight Premier League matches away from home; their longest unbeaten away run since August 2013 (13 games).
    - The Red Devils have scored exactly three goals in each of their last two PL away games; they last scored three or more goals in three consecutive matches in November 2012.
    - Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored eight goals in his last seven Premier League matches away from home for Manchester United.
    - The last three meetings between these teams at the Stadium of Light have resulted in two 2:1 wins for Sunderland and a 1-1 draw.
    - The last time he met Sunderland, Ibra scored one and assisted two, though this was at Old Trafford
    - Man United are 7th in the form table over the last 5, with 7 goals scored and 3 conceded. Sunderland are second to bottom, with none scored and 7 conceded.
    - Man Utd are 10th in the home form table, with 21 goals scored and 11 conceded in 16 matches. Sunderland are 17th with 10 scored and 27 conceded.

    SANCHEZ vs Palace

    - Arsenal haven’t lost away to the Eagles in the top-flight since November 1979 (W6 D5)
    - Sam Allardyce has lost 15 times to Arsene Wenger in the Premier League, the most defeats he has against any manager in the competition (W4 D7).
    - Arsene Wenger has never lost a Premier League game against Crystal Palace (W8 D3 L0). The only teams he’s faced more in the Premier League without losing are Leicester (18) and Portsmouth (14)
    - Arsenal have however lost 4 and won 1 of their last 5 away games in all competitions. In those games however Sanchez has 2 goals and an assist (and a missed penalty), which isn’t bad considering Arsenal only scored 6 in total over that period.
    - The last two games between these sides at Palace have ended 1-2 to Arsenal. In those games, Sanchez failed to make a mark, save for assisting an own goal.
    - Arsenal are 11th in the form table over the last 5, with 9 scored and 8 conceded. Palace meanwhile are 4th, with 7 scored and 4 conceded.
    - Palace have a home form record this season of 15 goals scored and 20 conceded in 14 matches, leaving them in 18th place. Arsenal have an away record of 30 scored and 21 conceded in 14 matches, putting them 6th.

    LUKAKU vs Leics

    - 13 of the previous 21 Premier League contests between these two sides have ended level, the greatest draw ratio for a Premier League fixture played over 20 times (62%).
    - Everton have won their last six Premier League matches at Goodison Park, scoring 22 goals and keeping five clean sheets. They haven’t won seven in a row since April 2014.
    - Romelu Lukaku has had a hand in 18 goals in 14 Premier League home appearances this season (13 goals, five assists). The Belgian striker has hit 10 goals in his last six league games at Goodison Park.
    - Leicester beat Everton in the last two matches at Goodison, despite Lukaku scoring in both
    - When it comes to form over the last 5, Everton are 10th with 11 scored and 7 conceded. Leicester are 2nd with 13 scored and 4 conceded.
    - Home form for Everton shows that they are in 4th place, with 34 scored and 10 conceded. Leicester are in 18th place away from home, with 11 scored and 29 conceded (obviously they have changed manager recently though and seem to be undergoing a resurgence).

    AGUERO vs Hull

    - Manchester City have been beaten just once in nine previous Premier League games against Hull City, a 1-2 loss in February 2010 (W5 D3).
    - Sergio Aguero has scored 25 goals in his last 30 Premier League appearances at the Etihad Stadium. The Argentine averages a goal every 99 minutes on home soil in the Premier League.
    - Aguero has scored nine goals in his last nine appearances for Manchester City in all competitions.
    - Since Marco Silva was appointed Hull manager on January 5th, the Tigers have won 17 points in the Premier League – only Chelsea (23), Spurs (23) and Everton (21) have won more in this period. This is one more than Man City (16) since then, but they have played one more game.
    - Aguero has scored one goal in each of his last 4 premier league away games
    - In terms of form over the last 5, City have scored 6 and conceded 5. Hull meanwhile have scored 9 and conceded 11.
    - Over the season, City rank 9th in terms of home form, with 24 goals scored and 14 conceded in 14 games. Hull are second from bottom in terms of away form, with only 7 goals scored but 35 conceded in 15 games.

    TL:DR / CONCLUSION

    - I wondered whether to give a conclusion, as one is probably best gained from simply reading what's above and seeing what stands out. Personally, I think stats, team form and game history suggest none of the above candidates are a bad option this week, though Alli and Eriksen again appear to be the ones with the best chance of getting double figure hauls, given Spurs’ imperious home form, their push for a top table finish and the recent form of both players.

Currently Alli, I think he poses more goal threat than Eriksen and was apparently unlucky not to score earlier in the match yesterday. I also wonder if Eriksen can keep his output consistent as that's been an issue in the past, though on recent form it definitely seems so. I will no doubt flick between the two before the deadline. I also own Sanchez and Lukaku by the way, but not Aguero or Ibra.

Worth noting that Eriksen seems to have prospered from the switch to 3-4-3 following Kane's injury, might be a case of catching his points while you can

Well I have both Alli and Eriksen and I think it's a good double up. So I would say Eriksen and then maybe Aguero, given Hull's defensive difficulties.

Oh also I acknowledge the DGW for Ibra, but it depends if this is a one week punt or not. Also depends on whether you think Ibra's DGW fixtures are actually any good or not.

There were actually a few relevant Vardy stats too FYI:

        - Jamie Vardy has scored twice and assisted another two goals in three previous Premier League games against the Toffees.

        - Vardy has scored five goals in six competitive matches since Craig Shakespeare first took charge of the Foxes – this compared to seven goals in 32 games under Claudio Ranieri in 2016-17.

        - He's also scored in both the last two away matches

Tricky to gauge him though as the Leicester resurgence is still in it's infancy, but based on recent form there's cause to think he might also be a good option

I have Alli and Aguero, and Alli is tempting BUT Aguero has the potential to bang in 4 goals. So ultimately I think fear will rule the day for me 😀

This is something I like most about FPL, to go into details and analyse number, just wanted to say thank you for making the effort and letting us have a better perspective to choose our captain from!

A little note to Aguero; from what I can see from Hulls away games under Silva is that they started out pretty well (very luckily though) against United but have let in 2, 3 and 4 goals respectively the last three away matches after that. 2 at home vs Boro hardly installs confidence either.

Thanks. True about Hull and their defensive away from home, it's a reason Aguero captainers can be optimistic. My slight concern would be over the fact that he hasn't got any 'hauls' in the league recently so to speak (see the point in the post above about his lack of double digit returns) - makes me think one goal is a probability, but would be unsure about more (typically they come from the other attacking players in the team like Sane). Still, anythings possible in football and Aguero is still Aguero after all 🙂

Correction to the Ibra section, Man Utd are 3rd in terms of away form with 22 scored and 13 conceded in 13 games. Sunderland are bottom of the Home form table with 14 scored and 26 conceded over 15 games.

Will teach me to type this quickly on my lunchbreak

I own Eriksen, Sanchez and Lukaku and after reading this I could captain any of them. Going without Aguero, Ibra and Ali seems very unlikely to not hurt me so getting the armband right becomes even more important.

Given that Sanchez is likely to be played on the LW against an improved Palace and Lukaku faces a revived Leicester side, I'll be opting for Eriksen against the injury strike Hornets and hoping that Ali's H2H form isn't proven to be such an effective prediction of the scoreline!

Have had a few injuries in my draft league. These are the only free agent options left, and price does not matter. Which would you choose for the run-in?

    A) Huth
    B) Ward-Prowse
    C) Rojo
    D) Stones
    E) Fabio
    F) Fellaini
    G) Lingard
    H) Holgate
    I) Gorsicki/Markovic
    J) Berahino
    K) Welbeck

      Ward-Prowse DEFINTELY

      Then in the next bracket:

      Grosicki/Markovic
      Stones
      Holgate
      Huth
      Fabio (if fit)
      Rojo

      and the next bracket:

      Welbeck
      Lingard
      Fellaini

And in the 'don't touch with a bargepole' bracket:

      Berahino

I have Llorente rapidly becoming a problem, Ashley Williams banned, Valencia and Sterling are now apparently a rotation risk and Maguire might be injured too. Oh and I have the non playing Amat and Diomande on my bench.

    Team is:

    Heaton, Pickford

    Alonso, Valencia, Williams, Maguire, Amat

    Sanchez, Alli, Sterling, Sigurdsson, Zaha

    Vardy, Llorente, Diomande

    6.1 itb, 1 FT

    Current options I see are:

    A) Wildcard
    B) FT Diomande to Lukaku, Hope Llorente is fit, Play AoA
    C) FT Transfer in a defender
    D) Hope Maguire is fit, Transfer in Ibra for Llorente
    E) Hit(s)

    Thoughts?

never seen such a carefree season for hits on here. theres just no issues with-4, -8s, sometimes -12s, people being told (the vast majority of the time) to go ahead and do it. all you have to do is mention any player who scored that week as a replacement for someone who didnt and you get a green light

maybe Im wrong but really don't think it was like that before

I am considering A because it seems Spurs are scoring freely, and have two relatively weaker teams at home in the next two gw's. In comparison, Pool away are a bit uncertain, and Stoke away is seemingly tougher than Watford home. Coutinho also does not seemingly play the full 90 minutes of late (for one reason or another).

Yep, Stoke is really tough at home.. Don't expect much from Cout there + Eriksen really worries me.

    1FT:
    Bank: 0.1

    Heaton
    Walker - Rannochia - McAuley - Alonso
    Coutinho - Eriksen - Sigurdsson - Hazard
    Lukaku - Ibrahimovic
Subs: Jakupovic, Ake, De Roon and Llorente.

Consider getting a Manchester City player. Sane maybe? Or Aguero? With him, I could even do without Alonso and -4. What do you all mean? With Sigurdsson I am somehow not so satisfied.

Or what do I do with Llorente? What would you recommend? I'm doing it hard. That's why I need your help. 🙂
