This Much We Know – Gameweek 32

It’s feast and famine in north London, as our midfields get flooded with Spurs assets while Arsenal’s big ticket item hits the buffers. Meanwhile, up front, the decision to shun the runaway contender for the Golden Boot nears as Manchester United’s one-man attack makes his play. All this and more occupies our hearts and minds following Gameweek 32.

Spurs are really spoiling us…
Their chase of leaders Chelsea may ultimately prove fruitless, but there can be no doubt that Spurs’ end of season form has presented us with a rich array of Fantasy options.

Son Heung-min’s explosive 19 points provided the latest contribution, adding to Dele Alli’s prolific goal tally and Christian Eriksen’s continuous stream of assists. Throw a fit-again Harry Kane – with more points per match than any other striker – into the mix, and there can be no question that Mauricio Pochettino’s squad are currently our key provider of talent.

Don’t be distracted by the clamour for other double Gameweek assets. Arguably Spurs’ form is so compelling, we should look to fill the three slots in our squads as a priority above all others.

United’s reliance on Zlatan lives on…
While Kane is potentially an immediate target for Gameweek 33’s White Hart Lane visit from Bournemouth, there’s little doubt that we have to be mindful of reserving a place for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

United’s attacking fluidity cannot compare to Spurs’ imaginative, expansive football but, in Ibrahimovic, Jose Mourinho’s side have a player that dominates almost every aspect of their attacking ploys.

Sunday’s clincial strike at Sunderland, coupled with the late assist for Marcus Rashford’s third goal, again highlighted just why we still need to consider the Swede.

A determined Chelsea defence will visit in Gameweek 33, while United’s two fixtures in Gameweek 34 – Burnley and Man City away – are hardly favourable, and yet they need only need to score two or three goals over those matches for Ibrahimovic to provide us with reward.

Lukaku is a difficult habit to break…
The situation in our frontlines is clouded further by Romelu Lukaku’s remarkable form at Goodison Park.

While on paper a Kane/Ibrahimovic pairing looks to be an optimum route for those employing just two heavy-hitting strikers, shedding the Premier League’s leading scorer is a daunting prospect.

Lukaku has now scored in seven successive home matches, notching twelve goals in those fixtures. Burnley drop in on Merseyside at the weekend, making it almost impossible for us to contemplate swapping the Toffees’ striker out at this point.

The “perfect” window appears to be ahead of Gameweek 34, with Ibrahimovic an obvious replacement and Lukaku facing an away trip to West Ham followed by Chelsea’s visit to Goodison.

There is logic to support the swap to United’s talisman but, at the same time, there is no question that Lukaku is the more devastating – Sunday’s 12-point return from Ibrahimovic was his biggest since Gameweek 18.

Leading the Golden Boot race, we know all too well that Lukaku is capable of punishing us should we surrender to the allure of double Gameweek assets.

The heavy-hitting defenders are deserting us…
Dazzled by choice up front, in defence, our options now appear sparse.

Robbed of Seamus Coleman, the prospects of both Kyle Walker and Antonio Valencia are now in question following recent absence.

Walker, as the top-owned FPL defender, faces a continued threat of rotation over his remaining seven matches with Kieran Trippier proving a more than capable replacement. While the former Burnley full-back remains an understudy, Pochettino is aware that he can bring in Trippier to help open up stubborn defences with the accuracy and frequency of his crosses from the flank. The away trip to Palace, in Gameweek 34, would appear to be the next point of vulnerability for Walker.

As for Valencia, his absence from Manchester United’s last two matches remains something of a mystery; we’re not certain on the nature of any injury or whether it’s just pure exhaustion from recent international exertions and long-haul flights. The Ecuadorian is expected to return for the UEFA Europa League trip to Anderlecht, but then there will be question marks over his pitch-time for the Gameweek 33 visit of Chelsea.

Like Walker, the United defender is no longer a “fire and forget” option – he’s an uncertainty that’s unwelcome at a time when we’re seeking to exploit double Gameweek opportunities and focus transfers on attacking areas.

Alonso has added a new string…
At least Marcos Alonso has discovered a way to compensate for the failings of Chelsea’s defence and his heavy-hitting peers.

The Spaniard’s beautifully flighted effort at the Vitality Stadium brought his fifth goal of the campaign and at last rewarded his technique from direct free-kicks. With David Luiz belatedly giving way to Alonso at dead-balls, the wing-back may now even promise further profit to help balance Chelsea’s alarming propensity to leak goals.

Antonio Conte’s defence have now conceded in each of their last nine Gameweeks, shipping once in eight of those matches.

Gibson and Yoshida have killed the debate…
As we reconsider the pricey options in our backlines, we now appear to be settled on our targets lower down the price brackets.

The Middlesbrough and Southampton defences come into focus with the double Gameweeks in mind and, where once there was debate on the preferred options, the argument has now settled down.

Ben Gibson was always the most assured route into Steve Agnew’s rearguard but in recent Gameweeks the centre-back has confirmed this status. Admittedly, injuries to team-mates have limited our choice but, with an assist and four bonus points in his last three Gameweeks, Gibson has taken significant strides.

As for Southampton, Maya Yoshida appears to have snatched the initiative from team-mate Ryan Bertrand. Now settled as the Saints’ defensive lynchpin, Yoshida has claimed a first Premier League goal of the season and registered bonus points over each of the last three Gameweeks – a timely burst of points that has seen his ownership swell and his rank on our double Gameweek shopping list rise.

Sanchez desperately needs centre stage…
Spurs are doing their bit to populate our midfields but, across north London, Arsenal continue to deal us a troublesome scenario.

Alexis Sanchez surely remains integral to their fading hopes of sealing a top-four placing and yet, based on recent evidence, his ability to influence Arsenal’s results is being severely hampered by a new instruction to remain tight to the left flank.

Monday night’s performance at Selhurst Park offered little indication that Sanchez can overcome the situation. The Chilean had four shots and ten touches from inside the Palace box, but those numbers fail to illustrate the lack of punch that he was able to provide.

Having blanked in three successive Gameweeks for the first time this season, these are now desperate times for Sanchez, with Fantasy managers surely now considering how his funds could be exploited elsewhere.

The double Gameweek announcement may yet go some way to relieve concerns, but we ideally need Wenger to see the light, revert to “Plan A” and return Sanchez to the central attacking role at Middlesbrough.

Sigurdsson is on his last legs…
While Sanchez has stalled badly, Gylfi Sigurdsson has ground to a halt.

A run of four successive blanks has seen the Icelander time his decline to allow a seamless transition to double Gameweek assets, with Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha the most obvious benefactor.

The return of Fernando Llorente for Swansea’s City’s vital trip to Watford could yet re-ignite Sigurdsson. The Spanish target man undoubtedly peps up Paul Clement’s attack and acts as a springboard for Sigurdsson in the final third. But, with Palace in form and facing a leg-weary Leicester City, the Gameweek 33 move from Sigurdsson to Zaha appears logical and a major temptation.

…and so, it seems, is McAuley…
Replaced before the hour-mark in his last two Gameweek outings, we could well be witnessing the slow decline of Gareth McAuley as a Fantasy asset.

While the West Brom fixture list appeared punishing over the run-in, with the Gameweek 34 blank consigning McAuley to significant sales, there was still hope that the centre-back could yet deliver a seventh goal of the season.

With Tony Pulis now intent on sparing the 37-year-old’s legs in a bid to chase matches, there’s every chance that we’re already being offered a glimpse of the future. Craig Dawson seems destined for the role alongside Jonny Evans next season, which would mean we have limited time to exploit McAuley’s remaining goal threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

kane needs time and Kaku is an option that can go either way. It would be tipical of Everton to fail to score against a well organised Burnley defense.

Just to add to the captaincy conundrum...

    Chelsea 3-0 Burnley
    Man United 0-0 Burnley
    Tottenham 2-1 Burnley
    Man City 2-1 Burnley
    Arsenal 2-1 Burnley
    Liverpool 2-1 Burnley

We all backed Zlatan to humiliate Heaton at Old Trafford. Lots of FPL managers captained Kane at the Lane. Gameweek 20 saw some of us bring back Aguero for an epic goalfest. Sanchez was gonna run riot against an atrocious Burnley. People doubled - or even tripled - up on Liverpool mids in GW28.

My point is that apart from champions-elect Chelsea, all the top sides struggled to break Burnley down. Sean Dyche and his boys are still without an away win, but they can be very tight at the back and I can't see the game at Goodison being a walkover for Everton.

Who still feels confident enough to captain Lukaku?

Oddly, that makes me feel better about captaining him. They pretty much give up at least two goals on the road to decent sides, and if that happens this week Lukaku is certain to get at least one, and maybe both.

You are of course right, and have unequivocal facts to back that up. BUT, and it's a big BUT, Trollface Lukaku doesn't play by the rules, only his rules! I think he'll score big. If he scores two, he's probably already securing the golden boot, and that's gonna be a huge motivation for him. Views?

I'll be captaining Kane, or Sanchez, or Aguero, or Baines, maybe Kaku!!!!!

      Cases against your argument:

      1) Burnley are pretty much safe now. They will be less motivated.
      2) Most of the games above ended in victories for the home team though with 2 or more goals (All apart from Utd). Lukaku has a very high goal involvement with Everton. 2 Lukaku goals in a 2-0 or 2-1 win would be great.
      3) Everton are in terrific home form and so is Lukaku who is gunning for top scorer and for a big move in the summer. I expect him to be on penalties now he is the front runner for golden boot (yet to be seen).

Very good point and one I agree with, people keep talking about Burnley's poor away record, they've now kept 3 clean sheets in 4 with 2 of those on the road, they also haven't been thumped in a while, they've adapted to the PL and still get criticism for the early part of the season.

Lukaku did well against Hull on paper but that was after Huddlestone got sent off and his goals all came in the last few mins, Leicester pretty much put out a weaker side, he is a beast but Burnley will give him a stiff test.

One thing no one is even talking about much, for all his beastly ability, he's facing the ultimate beast in Heaton at the other end, most saves in the league, 3 clean sheets in 4, his form is equally as strong.

It seems they usually concede 2 away to the top sides which isn't great. Everton are nigh on a one man team for attacking threat so you'd expect to see Lukaku get in the points.
I still think Kane is the better option though. Bournemouth are a more open side and are likely to concede more than Burnley. However, points are also more likely to be shared between the Spurs players so perhaps Lukaku is the better choice after all.

Burnley statistically are not the pushover that people may think ....

Burnley concede less goals against the top teams than their league average.

Top teams score more goals at home on average than Burnley concede away from home against these top teams.

Burnley average away goals conceded = 1.88 gpg

Burnley average away goals conceded against the listed top teams = 1.83 gpg

Home goals scored against all teams ...
      Chelsea 39/15 = 2.6 gpg
      Man United 21/16 = 1.3
      Tottenham 39/16 = 2.4
      Man City 27/15 = 1.8
      Arsenal 31/15 = 2.1
      Liverpool 41/16 = 2.6
      Average 198/93 = 2.1

So 5 of the top 6 have scored at least 2 goals against Burnley at home. Thats still enough encouragement to captain Lukaku

Everton have had 3 big home scoring games against Bournemouth, Hull and Leicester which constitutes 1/3 of all their home games, but at the same time they have also scored 1 or less goals in a 1/3 of all their home games when against more stubborn defences.

Of those big wins one was 6 goals against the dodgy defensive unit of Bournemouth, 4 goals against Hull where 3 cane after a red card, and 4 against a weakened Leicester with one eye in the CL.

Yes Lukaku is a good shout for scoring, but Burnley may buck the trend

As a comparison its probably worth putting up Bournemouth's away results against the top 6:

      Man City 4 - 0 Bournemouth
      Arsenal 3 - 1 Bournemouth
      Chelsea 3 - 0 Bournemouth
      Man Utd 1 - 1 Bournemouth
      Liverpool 2 - 2 Bournemouth

13 conceded in 5 versus Burnley conceding 11 in 6, and there's also the 6-3 loss away to 7th Placed Everton to take into account.

I think Captaining a spurs player is the way to go this week.

my conclusion from the Burnley stats and these Bournemouth stats is that Man U are pants and have only scored once at home vs two defensively weak sides.

This shows that Bournemouth concede more goals than Burnley in away games against top teams (United have a strong defence, but when it comes to scoring home goals they are not a top team).

But it also shows that Everton are the most effective rabbit-bashers when at home against weak teams at home - and their goals are not shared around as much as Spurs' goals are.

Kane and Lukaku are both excellent captain choices. I'm captaining Lukaku, but would certainly consider Kane as a good alternative if I owned him or could get him without taking a hit or removing Ibra or Lukaku. He has only just returned from injury though - will he be back to his devastating best yet?

Excellent counter point. I think I will captain Kane, and reduce the risk of a red arrow through also owning Lukaku and Alli. It may well turn out to be one of those weeks where Kane and Lukaku get a score within a point or 2 of each other anyway. Don't think he will be back to his best yet, I'm certainly not expecting a 20 point haul or anything, but something around 10 points would be a good return I'd be happy with.

Burnley are playing for £1 million every league place they can climb and no doubt big bonuses attached to it - their players are not massively paid and must be loving the win bonuses

Cheers 🙂 I think Everton are motivated and haven't given up on a top 4 place yet, and, possibly more importantly, Lukaku will be gunning for the golden boot. They will approach the game in a professional and motivated manner I think, no buckets and spades yet! 😉

However, I don't think Burnley are safe yet, and Dyche certainly won't be letting his players let their guard down. A couple of losses and they could be right back in the dogfight.

If I was to guess I'd say 2-0 Everton.

I don't get it. 11 goals conceded in six games is a lot of goals. The one game they didn't concede in was against Utd who forgot how to score. Plus Everton have one of the best goals for record at home in the league. This actually makes me want to captain him more.

there seems to be a sentiment that Lukaku is untouchable in the effort in bringing Kane in because of his captaincy option against a thrashable Burnley ... but it may not be quite as clear cut as that

Normally 40 points is safe. Might be much lower this season as Hull are great at home and may only get to 36. Swansea will struggle to get 36.

None of the teams around 34-37 points is totaly safe, both Hull and Swansea could ver wel lget 3 points this weekend and if so there will be tighter again. Southampton seems to be aiming for that 8th place. Allways is difficult to predict in the end of season, because what looks like a team without something to play for could all of a sudden turn up, like we saw with West Brom a couple of weeks ago vs Arsenal. But in general I tend to play with the motivation as a rule, like next week I both play Jaku and Maws even though their fixture and stats doesn´t bode for it i hope that at least one of them will keep a CS or hopefully Mawson will pop up with a desperate Swansea.

For those of us who dont have our WC:

Assuming you can get max 11 DGW players in GW37, the difference between playing BB and TC is:
4 games from the bench vs 2 extra games from your captain.

Wouldnt Aguero, Hazard or Kane (TC) in 37 be the best choice then considering the fixtures?

    Am I missing something?

I'm sure you will have a very decent team, just not an expensive one.
Loads of cheapish, form players available.

    Can I justify a -12 for this

    Sanchez > Alli
    Aguero > Kane
    Lloris > Pickford
    De Roon > Zaha

I know it's high but I need to take out a Spurs player to accommodate Alli & Kane because I've already got Davies and after De Roon was dropped I'm hesitant to play him ahead of Albrighton this GW

    Current team

    Valdes Lloris

    Davies Alonso Valencia Maguire Yoshida

Sanchez Albrighton Lanzini De Roon Redmond

    Aguero Lukaku Origi

    No WC 1.1 ITB

    Any ideas would be welcomed

That doesn't seem prudent to me. Just to De Roon to Zaha and either Sanchez to Alli or Aguero to Kane (probably the former).

      Not a fan myself.
If I was going -12 then I would want Origi to be Kane tbh.
Having Alli and Kane is not a necessity imho

Diabolical. It's as if everyone on here has a crystal ball that says Kane huge haul Aguero blank when that's far from certain

Sanchez to Zaha enable Origi to Kane with less hits?

If I get Kane it will be for Ibra. Aguero is the top scoring forward this season in away fixtures and last 4 game weeks including best shot stats

It was a reply fail. I already did Kun to Kane. I just don't trust pep's team. They dominate so much without producing enough. But I agree with you that Kun can outscored Kane this week. Over 3-4 weeks Kane will win hands down.

And Southampton have conceded only 4 goals in last 4 home games keeping 2CSs plus Aguero is 1 goal at best, so...

The last 3 with this CB pairing conceded 4 in last 3 home against Wham 3 Bournemouth 0 Palace 1. None exactly Man City calibre

Getting Kane and Zaha is great which I did too but I wouldn't be selling Kun yet.

    (4) Alli
    Who do I choose. Thanks!
