Team Of The Season – Marcos Alonso

His arrival at Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina on the final day of August was unheralded and his league debut a losing one, but Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso would go on to become one of the key Fantasy assets in the 2016/17 campaign.

The Spaniard was brought on in the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal back in September – the moment when Blues boss Antonio Conte first switched to a three-man defence with wing-backs.

Neither side nor player looked back from that point, and with 30 % of the votes, Alonso becomes the first of our three-man defence in the Team of the Season.

The Statistics

Alonso made his first league start in the 2-0 win over Hull City in Gameweek 7, when he was available for 5.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), down from his initial starting price of 6.0.

At that point, the Spaniard was owned by a mere 20,523 managers in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but his performance at the KCOM Stadium provided an immediate indication of the attacking threat he would provide.

He registered five goal attempts against the Tigers – more than any other player involved – and also led the way for chances created (four).

That clean sheet was the first of six consecutive shut-outs for the new-look Chelsea backline, with Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill combining in central defence and Alonso and Victor Moses operating as wing-backs.

He registered his first attacking returns with an assist in the emphatic 4-0 win over Manchester United in Gameweek 9 and opened his account for his new club with a goal in the comprehensive 5-0 victory over Everton in Gameweek 11.

The wing-back produced his first double-figure haul that day, totalling 13 points.

Following that impressive performance, Alonso saw his price shoot up to 6.3 in FPL prior to the Gameweek 12 trip to Middlesbrough, with over 300,000 managers adopting him by that point.

Conte’s men put together another run of four successive clean sheets between Gameweeks 15 and 19, but it was in Gameweek 21 when Alonso produced one of the definitive performances of the season.

The defender scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Leicester City and, with what turned out to be his only maximum bonus point haul of the season, he provided a sensational 21-point return.

Although the clean sheets dried up during the second half of the season, Alonso registered a further three goals and two assists as his price climbed to 6.9 by Gameweek 38.

He ended the season as the joint-top scoring defender in FPL with six goals, while he also provided five assists, one behind the league-leading six from Spurs’ Kyle Walker.

He was also the second-highest scoring defender in FPL with 177 points – one behind team-mate Cahill – with Azpilicueta (170) completing an all-Chelsea top three.

Alonso did average 5.7 points per match (ppm) though, significantly better than Cahill (4.8) and Azpilicueta (4.5).

His underlying statistics were also outstanding, registering more goal attempts (46), shots from inside the box (25) and shots on target (16) than any other FPL defender.

Interestingly, Alonso didn’t fare that well when it came to bonus points, only managing 11 compared to 22 for Azpilicueta and 15 for Cahill.

In a nutshell, Alonso could not compete with that pair for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), or completed passes – both factors which impacted on his Bonus Points System tallies.

The Prospects

Alonso will inevitably earn a price hike next season.

Many will no doubt ponder whether out-and-out wing-backs such as Alonso should be reclassified as midfielders, but a price tag of between 7.0 and 7.5 as a defender appears the most likely outcome.

The classification of Victor Moses could also affect Alonso’s stock.

If he’s also a defender next season, the Nigerian will surely be priced lower than Alonso, although his tally of three goals and three assists was inferior.

All of Chelsea’s defensive starters look set to rise in value, with a minimum price of 6.5 perhaps likely across the board.

With Champions League fixtures on the agenda, we perhaps need to assess Chelsea’s defensive assets with more caution.

Conte will look to strengthen his squad over the summer, with alternatives in the wing-back positions likely to be one of the priorities.

That will need monitoring, with the calibre of new acquisitions dictating whether Alonso could be a rotation risk.

But based on his performances this season, Alonso will surely be expected to remain the first-choice.

He could also justify a hefty price tag, with Conte likely to build the Blues’ title defence around the quest for clean sheets.

We will be keen to monitor Alonso’s early numbers to assess if there is any marked regression, but it’s doubtful whether that will make us wary of investment.

Should Chelsea’s opening fixtures bless them with a favourable start, Alonso will likely remain the go-to option for most, particularly if he is priced at just 0.5 more than his defensive team-mates.

So with the WC in Russia in the summer of 2018, does this mean less international breaks throughout the season?

      No.

      4 qualifiers left = 2 international breaks
      Playoffs left = 1 IB

Plus the usual one in March. 4 breaks as always.

If you think this is bad after the WC they're starting something called UEFA Nations League. Some competitive league system replacing the friendlies. Will lead to even more nightmares from a FPL perspective.

I would advocate the removal of the regional championships (Euros, Cops America) and introduction of four year qualification for the World Cup. Qualifiers should be played in the summer when the Euros would've been and if during the season, on a Wednesday night.

Interesting side story to the Griezmann news, Lacazette (who is currently with Griezmann in the France squad) came out earlier and said he had no idea where he would be playing next season and nothing had been signed with Atletico, contrary to earlier reports.
Griez and Lacazette are long term friends and AG was apparently very keen on the signing.
Would not surprise me if this is what pushed Griezmann over the edge.

Somewhat relevant too is that the decision on Atletico's transfer ban is due this week, with that potentially being the catalyst for Lacazette's announcement. But that's pure speculation.

Alexis to Bayern? Bayern Munich’s highest paid players Lewandowski Franck Ribery and Arjen Robbenall are all earning €160,000 per week thats the top whack... not bad but Alexis contract would demand double that surely.. would Bayern bust there there salary structure so much...? Ozil left Bayern to earn more money, not to win more silverware! Imo..

I like to think Alexis isn't driven purely by money. I think the Arsenal contract offer has come from offering more money being the only thing they can do to convince him to stay.

Ozil never played for Bayern, do you mean Kroos? I'd imagine money was a factor in his decision to leave, although he allegedly didn't fit in with the rest of the Germans in the dressing room and was seen as a bit of an outsider.

Rooney replacement essentially.. behind the striker.. personally i would like to see us go 4-3-3 and have a fluid inter changing front 3 but Jose will likely be looking for an out and out centre forward too.. time will tell but this Griezmann deal looks a real goer

Also there's no chance Mourinho is playing a roaming front 3 in a 433. Have you not seen the attention to detail on positional discipline this season?

Because he has never been an out and out striker he is a support striker and has qualities that show in wider positions and even deeper positions too.. would agree a roaming front 3 is unlikely but i didn't say he would i said i would.. and on that note i would say there is little chance of playing with a rather lightweight 5ft 9 centre forward when all his career he has based attacks around much more physical types

A support striker in a 2 man strike force is a far cry from a number 10. Griez has been *as much* an out and out striker as his striker partners this and last season, with the exception of Jackson Martinez, who was sold because he and Griez couldn't form an effective strike partnership.

He has always played with a more physical striker, but unless he spends another 80m on Belotti, it's likely that will change this season.

He'll be number #10 on paper, but actually a support striker. The role Rooney was playing at the start of this season. 4-2-3-1, wingers have more defensive duty and Griezmann furthest forward centrally along with the striker. That system will probably suit him best. But 4-3-3 with an interchangable front 3 would be nice too, especially for Pogba. I have faith in Pogba's ability in a 2 as well, however.

Exciting times ahead. Also why Perisic can be a great signing. Wingers have a huge role in the 4-2-3-1, him physically and being a really hard worker can make it excel.

Teams being built around Pogba. He can hold his own in a 2 but it doesn't get the best out of him. In the most important games I would imagine it'll be a midfield 3 with Pogba the third midfielder, in the less important games maybe he'll play Griez off Rashford/unlikely new signing and drop Pogba a bit deeper.
Griez has never been a number 10 so it'd be a bit strange to spend 100 million on him then play him there.

You're misunderstanding the role of the '#10' in Jose's system. He's literally a support striker, with a lot more freedom. Pretty much the same role he plays at Atletico in the 4-4-2. Look at us earlier this season when Rooney was supporting Ibra upfront.

A player with that talent is going to be signed and expected to do what he does best..
"He is very complete. You do not know what position he plays in. He works in midfield, assists like a number 10 and finishes line a number nine.

I don't see a great deal of difference in a suppport striker and a number ten infact they are pretty much the same thing in my eyes.. a number 10 supports a striker but also links the midfield to the attack assists and scores goals.. Griezmann qualities lend itself to this role much more than a striker playing right up top that at times can become isolated.. Griezmann will go hunting the ball and make things happen

A number ten is a third midfielder, see David Silva, James Rodriguez, Zinedine Zidane.

A support striker is a second striker who generally makes life easy for the main striker, see Shinji Okazaki last season, David Villa at Atletico and Emile Heskey for England. They are completely different things.

Griezmann is neither of these things. When playing with Torres he's the main striker, when playing with Gameiro there is no designated role they have a fluid partnership like Eto'o and Milito did under Jose at Inter.

We could go round and round in circles on our interpretations of number 10s support strikers and there role in different systems all night mate but i couldn't be arsed tbh.. if he signs we won't be long in finding out what the story is 🙂

Aye. Like I said earlier either the lone striker in a 433, in bigger games, and up top alongside Rashford, dropping deep etc. cause that's just his game in the games that might require less defensive emphasis.

+1 Gubbins. They're clearly very different roles.

Osako, Yussuf Poulsen, Hrgota, Haberer are support strikers.

Özil, Malli, Hamšik, Marco Fabián are number tens.

433 would put Griezmann on the wing if you guys sign a striker/keep Ibra. I think you need to have 3 mids regardless anyway as Pogba can't play in a 2

Hence why i said interchangeable Griezmann would not be stuck out wide but he can go into those areas and cause havoc as can Rashford Mkhitaryan Martial and all seriously effective through the middle too mate.. the 4-3-3 would benefit Pogba greatly too you're right he isn't his best in a 2

Just seen the live HOF has been updated for the season.

Its a great little tool but I can't help thinking that it could be better if the weighting was tweaked. I believe that previous seasons are weighted at around 80% meaning that your rank of 4 seasons ago is 'worth' around 41% of the current season.

As an example, someone like Marlen Rattiner who was 2nd in HOF last year is now ranked outside of the top 50 after a mediocre season this year. Im even ahead of him despite being beaten by him in 5 out of the 7 seasons I'v played.

The problem is exemplified with the live HOF during the season when a few weeks of playing is given more weighting than the whole of the previous season. I would suggest a weighting of 90% or even 95%. Thoughts?

    MBAPPE: I DREAMT ABOUT ZIDANE

Kylian Mbappe has admitted he used to dream about Zinedine Zidane amid speculation he could soon find himself playing under the French legend at Real Madrid.

"The player made me dream, and still does when I see certain videos," said Mbappe when asked about his fellow Frenchman.

The 18-year-old has been strongly linked with a switch to Real Madrid and Man City, with L'Equipe reporting on Tuesday that both have submitted offers in the region of 120m Euros (£104m).

But Mbappe said of his future: "I am focused on the national team above all. There is an awful lot of time ahead to think about all that. There are three important matches coming up, I will take stock after.

"Why would I play less? [If he moved away from Monaco]. I will have the time to think about all that, but no, I am not afraid of leaving."

Some people aren't old enough to recall that in the early days of the Premier League, Arsenal finished mid table and were managed by the likes of Bruce Rioch and Stewart Houston.

They could've ended up like Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday, but under Wenger they went on to have huge success, attract huge talent and get a massive new ground.

If that's a laughing stock I'd hate to think what Aston Villa are.

I've just been checking the club coefficients for next years Champions League.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_UEFA_Champions_League

Chelsea will obviously be in Pot 1 along with the champions from Europe's other seven top preforming league's (Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Skaktar Donetsk, Monaco and Spartak Moscow)

Pot 2 will contain Barcelona, Athletico Madrid, PSG, Dortmund, Manchester City, Porto and Manchester United, with the final spot going to either Saville, Napoli or Spurs (if the other two fail to win their league route play-off matches, otherwise Spurs will be in Pot 3)

Liverpool are guaranteed to be in pot 3 (with Basel and Anderlect) if they win their league play off round match up, although it will be in the eighth and final spot if Seville, Napolli, Olympiacos, Dynamo Kiev and Ajax win their play off matches.

Such a scenario would result in Roma, Besiktas, Feyenoord, Spartak Moscow and RB Leizig and three others being in pot 4. These could include Celtic (if they make the group stages), although Pot 3 is also a possibility for them if three of Liverpool, Seville, Napolli, Olympiacos, Dynamo Kiev and Ajax fail to make the ground stages of the CL.

There are some nightmare scenario's out there for you.

Real, PSG, and Rome, Bayern, Barcelona and Rome or Juventus, Barcelona and RB Leizig for starters, but Shaktar, Porto and the lowest ranked qualifier would probably be easier than Chelsea get, so all is not lost.

I'm not sure I'd touch him, or any Leicester player, with a barge pole unless I was completely sure they weren't involved in that damned near mutiny of effort earlier in the season. I'd be very wary.

The one and only Prince Buster. By far the coolest bloke on the planet until his untimely passing last year. He wrote the song Madness and is the Prince in the song of the same name by Madness...

Mahrez - along with Leicester were a flash in the pan IMO. They did amazingly well for one season, but that does not make their players great players. I think their best player is Schmeichel and I have questions mark over how he would do in a much better team where he is not involved for long periods of the game.

I don't think the full details of what actually happened have emerged yet - I'd be very wary of making too many assumptions at this stage.

Mahrez was asked to stay another year to help our Champions League campaign, He has done that and now he can leave with a clear conscience - as far as I am concerned anyway.

I'm not saying anything is cut and dried about who did what and when, the fact is we don't know, I'd just be very wary before I did know. Nothing worse for a club than a bad apple in the dressing room.

I'll be quite honest here - I don't have my finger on the pulse as these days I am very much an armchair Foxes fan. Nevertheless there were rumours going around that all would be revealed at some stage.

From a neutral point of view, I can quite understand that Leicester's from took a very suspicious upturn after Ranieri was sacked. I do hope that we all find out what the truth was.

Why has fa cup become so less important? People are calling Mouronho's efl cup win a part of the treble. I seriously think fa cup is being underrated in here.

Mourinho's treble = joke treble. Everyone knows that. EFL Cup = EFL Crap. FA Cup = FA Crap. Europa League = Europa Losers. I think:

      1) Scrap the EFL Cup
      2) Give the winners of the FA Cup a chance to get into the CL by playing a one-off game against the 4th placed PL team.

I think a better idea would be to scrap the efl cup and prolong the fa cup...have a two leg each round system beginning in October or September like copy del rey. Winner gets ucl.

It hasn't to the vast majority it's still the biggest domestic cup competition in world football.. the bigger teams that are involved in title races and Champions league may use weakened sides in early rounds to give fringe players opportunities and it will be last priority if those teams are still going for the title and in Europe toward the end of the season which is understandable but apart from that all this Fa cup means nothing these days is nonsense and blown out of proportion

I haven't seen anyone with a straight face claim United have won a treble this season and if they have they need a slap.. Mourinho will count it just to wind people up but the truth is we won two trophies.. if we are lucky enough to win the Super Cup in August against the CL winners he can count that as a third trophy as it was his hard work that got us all the way in the EL and gave us the chance to compete

Feghouli is a bit meh, as is *duck for cover* Noble. 😉

I just wonder whether Kelechi has enough tricks under his belt to avoid becoming slightly nullified.

The annoying thing about Iheanacho is that we probably don't know how good he actually is, he rarely started for City and is now moving to West Ham which is a completely different environment playing style wise. Is he going to be playing off Carroll or are the two actually competing for a space?

(I know there's already a hot topic, but...) The thing about Huddersfield...

They are the first side in Football League history to be promoted with a negative goal difference! 😆
So what does that mean for us?

Their results this season (incl play-offs):
    WINS:
    1-0 - 10 times
    2-1 - 10 times
All other wins - 5 times
(of which by more than one goal) - 3

HUDDERSFIELD WON BY MORE THAN ONE GOAL... THREE TIMES. 😆
(but they did get ten 1-0s!)

    DRAWS:
    Seven 1-1s, two 0-0s.

    LOSSES:
Of their 15 losses, 9 were by more than one goal.
    This included 5-0, 4-0, 3-0, 4-1 and two 3-1s - and this team were PROMOTED! 😆

I'm not criticising Huddersfield, they're a great team to watch (apart from the play-offs!) and Wagner has tackled the Championship in a very un-Championship way. I like them a lot.

    But for Fantasy?

A lack of goals, and a propensity to collapse.

We may get a BAPS-loving 1-0-loving defender, but otherwise, all we're interested in is... (c) vs Huddersfield time. 😎

I don't think Arsenal are a title-challenging club anymore - they seem to have rolled over for City & Spurs to casually stroll ahead over the years. And now that they've signed up for two more years of mediocrity, are they going to attract top talent anymore?

I have respect for Wenger and all he's achieved, but this was the board's chance at making a statement about where the club is heading, not an opportunity for them to get on their knees in front of Spurs and *censored*

I think we might see a change of tact from Wenger this time

He only has a 2 year deal and needs to deliver or die trying this is probably his last shot at winning the league and i reckon he will open the purse strings and spend big

I think Sanchez and Ozil will stay and a few signings in the right positions will put them back in contention
They were runners up in the league in the 15/16 season after all which is not ancient history

He can open the purse strings all he wants but its about 10 years too late the biggest and best players want to play CL and for the first time in a very long time Arsenal can't offer it

Other side of the coin is Sanchez and or Ozil leave and the Europa league will take it's toll on any kind of credible league campaign

I think Sanchez goes for sure.

If he was staying for me he would have indicated after the FA Cup win, that's his swansong he has his pick of clubs.

Takes Sanchez's contribution out of the Arsenal side they are completely hammered. He's the best player in the league for me.

Does it matter if Ozil stays? Probably better that he goes he looked like he couldn't be bothered his arse last season.

The board are as deluded as Wenger.
