Moving Target

Moving Target – Marco Silva

After parting company with head coach Walter Mazzarri, Watford moved quickly to replace the Italian, appointing Marco Silva as the new Hornets boss on a two-year contract.

Silva, who had been in charge at Hull City, decided to activate a release clause in his contract with the Tigers and despite strong interest from Portuguese side Porto, opted to take the reins at Vicarage Road.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Silva revealed it was the ambition of the club’s owners that attracted him to the job, while he hopes to produce a side that plays entertaining football:

“I really like the approach of the board and the owner. They showed me the project and I like the ambition… The club is moving forward as a Premier League club but we always want to improve our position in the table and that’s important for next season. We want to play good football so that our fans feel well when they come to see our team play.”

The History

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Silva spent most of his playing career in the lower divisions as a right-back.

He only made two Primeira Liga appearances, one for Belenenses and the other for Campomaiorense, before ending his career with a six-year stint at Estoril.

In June 2011, immediately following his retirement, Silva was appointed as the director of football at Estoril.

But during the early part of the next campaign, Silva took over as manager and guided the club to the league title and promotion back to the Primeira Liga following a seven-year hiatus.

The 2012/13 campaign was another historic one for Estoril, who finished fifth in the Primeira Liga, securing a place in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Incredibly, Silva would go one better the following season, steering Estoril to a fourth-place finish and automatic qualification for the Europa League.

Those successes convinced Sporting Lisbon to appoint Silva as their new manager on a four-year contract in May 2014.

Silva would only spend one season at Sporting, though, with a third-place finish in the league, and a Portuguese Cup triumph not enough to prevent him getting sacked in June 2015.

In July 2015, he signed a two-year deal to take over at Greek club Olympiakos.

Silva guided Olympiakos to a historic 17 consecutive domestic victories, before eventually winning the league title with six matches remaining.

He resigned in June 2016, however, citing personal reasons, and in January was appointed as Hull City head coach, replacing Mike Phelan.

He took over at the KCOM Stadium with the Tigers rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, with only 13 points from 20 matches played.

Silva’s impact was immediate, guiding his new side to a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in his first league match in charge.

That success at the KCOM Stadium was a sign of things to come. Hull’s home form under their new boss saw them pick up five wins and a draw from their next six home matches, putting them in position to avoid relegation.

But a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Sunderland ultimately cost the Tigers, with a 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace the following week confirming their relegation back to the Championship.

The Prospects

Silva takes charge of a Watford side who finished 17th in the Premier League, registering 40 points from their 38 matches.

The Hornets endured a miserable end to the season, losing their final six matches and conceding 16 goals in the process.

Under Mazzarri, Watford played in a number of different formations, with the Italian regularly switching between three and four-man defences.

That flexibility is likely to be utilised by Silva, who himself adopted a three-man backline at times with Hull, although he generally favoured a back four.

When Silva arrived in England, he was known to favour a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Following the arrivals of Kamil Grosicki and Lazar Markovic during the January transfer window, that system and the slight variation of a 4-1-4-1 brought a lot of success for the Portuguese boss.

But looking at the current Watford squad, it’s clear that Silva isn’t currently blessed with a great number of options in the wide areas – something he is likely to address in the transfer market.

At present, Nordin Amrabat and Isaac Success look the best solutions in those positions, with Roberto Pereyra, who missed much of the season after suffering a serious knee injury, perhaps another option, although he looks better suited to the No 10 role.

Unsurprisingly, Grosicki has already been linked with a move to Vicarage Road, with newly promoted Newcastle United are also thought to be interested in the Poland international.

Silva did at times play with two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation, but is likely to generally operate with just one frontman.

That should be Troy Deeney, with Mazzarri’s departure likely to increase the chances of the Hornets skipper remaining at Vicarage Road, following tension between the pair during the second half of the campaign.

Deeney has been linked with a move to West Bromwich Albion, although the £35 million price tag is likely to put off any potential suitors.

Then again, the Watford captain did play his best football in the top flight operating either alongside, or just behind, Odion Ighalo back in 2015/16. So should Silva bring in a new striker, or utilise Stefano Okaka or Mauro Zarate once he returns to full fitness, there is a chance Deeney could drop into a support striker role.

M’Baye Niang won’t be joining the club on a permanent basis following his loan spell during the second half of the season, so Silva seems certain to add to his forward options.

Under Silva, Hull saw their average number of goals per match increase from 0.8 to 1.1, while Watford averaged 1.1 goals per match under Mazzarri.

Oumar Niasse and Abel Hernandez had their moments for the Tigers, but neither boast the quality of Deeney, who could enjoy a new lease of life under the Portuguese boss.

In Etienne Capoue, Tom Cleverley and Abdoulaye Doucoure, Silva has three players who offer different qualities in central midfield, and having favoured Alfred N’Diaye and Sam Clucas at Hull, look perfectly capable of doing the same job for the new Hornets boss.

But if Capoue is to operate in a two-man midfield in a 4-2-3-1, a system in which Silva also likes his full-backs to push forward, his attacking instincts may have to be curbed somewhat, perhaps reducing his appeal as a budget option.

Injuries disrupted Daryl Janmaat’s first season at Vicarage Road, but the Dutchman looks well suited as an attack-minded right-back under Silva and he could re-emerge as a viable option in defence, having only produced two goals and one assist this season.

Silva has, however, been linked with a move for Hull right-back Omar Elabdellaoui, who he signed back in January, along with goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic, perhaps indicating he isn’t happy with the options he currently has available to him in those positions.

Similarly, Jose Holebas, who totalled two goals and four assists in 2016/17, could flourish at left-back, although his dismal disciplinary record he picked up 14 yellow cards – does dent his appeal.

During Silva’s tenure at Hull, the Tigers managed to keep four clean sheets in 18 matches, compared to just one in their first 20 clashes with Phelan at the helm.

There was also a reduction in the goal attempts conceded under Silva, down from 19.1 per match to 14.2, offering hope the new Watford head coach could improve on the seven shut-outs the Hornets registered in 2016/17.

Sebastian Prodl, Miguel Britos and Younes Kaboul were the main centre-backs used under Mazzarri, but with the trio dogged by injury and suspensions, Silva’s selections during pre-season will be key to finding out who his favoured partnership will be.

Heurelho Gomes has been a crucial member of the Watford squad over the past few seasons, but the link with Jakupovic suggest the 36-year-old may face fresh competition for his place as the first-choice goalkeeper.

Given Watford’s poor defensive record this season, with only three teams conceding more goals than they 68 they allowed, it’s likely that some of their defensive starters will be available at just 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

So should the Hornets be handed a favourable schedule at the start of next season, members of their backline could prove to be ideal rotation options.

Although Silva was ultimately not able to keep Hull in the Premier League, his management style earned plenty of praise, and with a full pre-season to prepare this time around, he looks well-placed to help Watford climb the table.

Recruitment will again be key. But after impressing in his first transfer window in January, there’s every indication that with greater backing, Silva will be able to bring in the right players and ultimately help provide Fantasy managers with plenty of value options from the Watford squad.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic:

Should there be a ban on playing the Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips in DGWs, so that we don’t all use them at the same time?

Should there be two of each, one for GW1-19 and the other for GW20-38, like the Wildcards?

Do they distort head-to-head and cup competitions too much, or do they add to the fun? Should their extra points perhaps only count towards Overall Rankings and Classic mini-leagues?

Any other changes you would like to see made to these chips?

Ban them from DGWs and it becomes chips of chance that don't award planning ahead.

As they are, they award experience managers who show patience to use them at the right moment.

In both cases, they are a distortion on the game and keep Overall Rank a flawed barometer of performance until nearly the end of the season as those blowing chips early move up higher and then get passed by late.

They completely foul up H2H competitions. If it was possible, I'd say that Chip points other than WCs should not count in H2H competitions.

What would be lovely is an option to play the game with no chips and no captains so skill was all that mattered and chance wasn't a chip-mad joker.

Mainly, stop thinking about adding more chips and start thinking about streamlining and removing those that already exist. They're not great as is, and should be refined before any consideration of adding some other daffy element of chance.

You could always create a mini-league with a "no chips" rule, but it would ruin your overall rank.

Difficult to prevent your captain's score being doubled though.

I'm not sure why the chips and captains are seen as making the game more exciting when they are randomised factor appliquéd atop the skill of selecting the correct players at the correct time based on statistical and empirical analysis.

The chips do seem to keep the casuals interested for longer though, especially if they find themselves with temporarily inflated rankings.

And although many of us here dislike the chips, not all of us do.

I haven't seen many others complain about the captains. They seem to have been part of the game forever, and it wouldn't be the same without them.

Reply posted by Adam West before I transferred this hot topic to this new article:

I enjoy the discussions on whether wingers , attacking mids and wing backs should have separate classifications . I think there is definitely something there . I am not really fussed about the chips tbh I liked it better when there was one wildcard and no chips as playing the wildcard became a much bigger decision . The only reason to add more chips would be to keep people who aren't really interested anyway interested for a bit longer . I think some of the ideas for chips on here come across as silly and would wreck the game . There is a difference between fun and silly . If they could discount chips from h2h/cups that would be great .

I think that the reclassification of players, new scoring systems etc, that was what Ultimate FPL was for, for the more diehard fantasy player. I doubt we'll see such innovation in FPL, a simple game for simple fantasy players.

Keep them I say. They make the game more exciting. I think most people would say having TC is the most exciting/interesting GW of the year.

FPL is literally a game based on mostly luck, it's gambling. Saying they should go to promote skill doesn't make sense to me.

I think they should have TC and BB for each half of the season. Let everyone plan for dgw as usual but you get a sgw punt pre-january too. Many times I've fancied a sgw chip but felt obliged to keep for dgw.

Leave them as they are largely, just replace AOA with a more meaningful chip that can be used effectively in a DGW so it's not obvious to use BB in one DGW and TC in the other one. An alternative useful chip could be to allow your vice captain to score like your captain.

We played a team game around FPL last season in our mini league, in which one of the chips was topper captain, wherein the highest playing player in the team was automatically designated as captain at the end of the GW, his scored being doubled...
Something similar may replace AOA, I feel. It could be fun and can be utilised in either DGW or in a kind of situation where you have captain selection dilemma....

I would just do away with them as they have too much impact on the outcome.

No, that would be ridiculous, Either allow them to be played in any week or get rid of them altogether.

DGWs can come out of the blue at any time. Sometimes with very little warning. So people could plan to use their chip in a certain week, next thing you know it's a DGW and they can't use it.

They do definitely mess with head to head leagues though. But you can't really discount their points, because some people's teams are set up specifically for the chip use.

I agree. The chips are good fun, and as I have used them in successive years' DGWs to rescue my ML position I am probably biased. The pros get the best out of them and the casuals enjoy themselves in a one week blaze of glory. The fact that they haven't thought to use the chips optimally is not our fault. Get rid of AOA for something interesting and I'll be very happy.

There's no doubt that the Chips have added extra dimensions to FPL for all kinds of players.

Casuals seem to like them as they allow an opportunity to score more heavily than otherwise would be the case. They also provide a (however temporary) boost to OR which, in turn, retains more players throughout the season and sees fewer casuals pack up their bags before they've even reached the stage where deploying the second wildcard comes into play.

For the nerds (like us), opinion is far more divided. I know plenty of seasoned managers who have cooled their love for FPL since the Chips were introduced the season before last (some have even stopped playing altogether), while others have really got on board and enjoy riding the excitement of a BB/TC/DGW combination twice a year. It is understandable to argue that the Chips reduce skill/help the masses although, in truth, they can be pretty devastating weapons if deployed to their full potential. Only serious managers, who have access to more information and are more likely to plan accordingly, should be in a position to do this. Therefore, both of these Chips should be an elite manger's friend.

I've never been that fussed on AOA and could quite happily see that disappear ahead of the new season.

As for thinking outside the box - how about a compulsory third chip (played once per season) called "Own Goal", whereby your score for that particular week is turned negative? We are always looking for ways to maximise points - perhaps trialling the inverse of that could be interesting with damage limitation the name of the game. Then again, it could be an awful idea (like many of my (C) calls during this past season). TM32

A viable alternative indeed. However, in truth, perhaps any Chip that limits scoring would simply reduce the fun that we actually get from playing FPL?

One other potential change could be to mirror the Official McDonald's game for the World Cup and Euros whereby managers can make active substitutions during a GW. TM32

Active substitutions are fine for competitions with shorter durations, such as the World Cup and Euros, but very few of us can afford the time to be making active substitutions every day for an entire Premier League season.

And I don't think they would be attractive to the casuals either.

Perhaps it could be considered for UFPL if they ever bring that back though.

Perhaps. In truth, I don't feel the game needs sweeping changes next year. Continuity is no bad thing.

I would, however, like a little more clarity and consistency with the awarding of (re-directed) assists and (deflected) OGs. Sometimes they are awarded. Sometimes they aren't. Not a Chip-related change, but another small step in the right direction. TM32

Chips add a bit to the overall planning of the season, but ultimately all the planning revolves around DGWs anyway. You want to use TC and BB during DGWs. You want to use WC before your BB and DGWs. There's too much incentive to use all your chips at the end of the season. There's no point planning to use your WC before GW30 when you know you'll need it to maximize the use of BB and TC.

This season was the perfect season to play the WC early. 5 of the top 6 teams had DGWs. There were no blanks after GW28. I don't think I've seen anyone plan to use the WC before GW33/34. Without BB and TC I think loads would WC earlier and create some strategic diversity. The next few season I expect there to be even less incentive to use your second WC early, unless TC and BB are removed.

AOA is a nice chip, but it needs to be available more often. At least once in the first half of the season and once in the second half.

FPL is now played by over 4million people. Yes, for diehards like us.. we will be looking at alternatives at how some complex rules will be fair.. but for the majority, the simple the better.
And, in my opinion, FPL has flourished due to its simplicity and will remain so.

If Silva had managed Hull from the beginning of last season, according to his points per game ratio, they would have finished on 44 points (so, 12th or 13th).

Good article, I should read more of them. If Jan Maat is 4.5m he'll be worth a punt. Watford were good in being fairly predictable; one had a fair idea when they'd have a good chance of a cleanie and you knew when to avoid.

With the advent of wing backs this season, should there be an option with the AoA chip, where you can play a defender instead of your 5th mid? For example Alonso, PVA, Walker etc....

    Seems only fair.

Today's unofficial hot topic (from THE STREET):

Of course I noticed that Walker was £5.5m at the start of last season.

The reason I stayed clear was that Poch likes to rotate his full backs.

This proved to be true towards the end of the season, but by then a lot of points had been lost.

On July 10th, will you be getting a Spurs full back/wing back in? I don't want to repeat my mistakes from last season, but there will be 4 players who can play in those 2 positions - by definition they won't be nailed.

    1. Dreams
      • 7 Years

I won't get Spurs full backs unless there is a clear situation. Too sure about that.

The thing that puts me off Fleetwood Mac is their endless moaning about their relationships when they made Rumours, i'm sick to death of hearing about it, it's been going on for thirty pigging years now....maybe more...

I think Floyd did the same to me when they just kept banging on about Syd Barrett on every interview.

It's all a bit too intense for my liking...
