Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Jack Butland

Having finally recovered from a long-term ankle injury, Stoke City stopper Jack Butland served a late reminder of his talents towards the tail end of last season.

Stuck on the sidelines for the opening 33 matches, the fit-again Butland replaced Lee Grant on Mark Hughes’ teamsheet and chalked up 20 points in the remaining five Gameweeks.

He signed off for the season with a 10-point tally against Southampton in Gameweek 38 to hint at what’s to follow in 2017/18.

  • That lack of pitch time is likely to affect Butland’s cost across the Fantasy games this season. He’s expected to come in at a maximum of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – identical to last term’s initial value – though there’s a case that he could even be listed as cheap as 4.5 considering that Stoke shipped 56 goals in 2016/17. Given that no Potters’ defender scored more than once in the previous campaign, Butland looks like the plum route into Hughes’ backline next time around.
  • A look back at Butland’s breakout season in 2015/16 highlights why we have such faith for the upcoming campaign. Afforded the number one slot as a result of Asmir Begovic’s move to Chelsea, he proceeded to rack up 132 points in 31 appearances – an average of 4.3 points per match (ppm) that term is identical to the top scoring keeper from last season, Burnley’s Tom Heaton.
  • Like Heaton, Butland’s ability to register save points and bonus boosts his potential beyond just shutouts. He chalked up a save point in 18 of those 31 outings in 2015/16 and was the leading keeper for saves at the point of his injury. He also delivered 14 bonus points that season – only Heaton (21) bettered that tally last time around. He was quick to replicate that output last term, claiming four saves points, two bonus and a pair of clean sheets from those five outings.
  • Looking at Stoke’s displays across the last two seasons, Butland’s absence clearly hampered their resilience. Without him, Hughes’ men conceded 66 goals in 40 matches– an average of 1.65 against – and produced nine clean sheets, or one every 4.4 matches. With Butland between the posts, they were breached 45 times in 36 outings – an average of 1.25 goals against – and registered 12 shutouts, or one every three matches.
  • Stoke’s opening set of fixtures – which pits them against seven of last year’s top ten in the first eight Gameweeks indicates that many will perhaps be keen to avoid their defensive regulars. Yet, as we saw in the case of Heaton last season, Butland’s shot-stopping prowess should keep his tally ticking over and strengthens his case as a “fire and forget” option between the posts.

Keepers prices are getting squeezed, to be honest. You could just have 4.5. and 5.0.

Remember Begovic at 4.5 in 12-13 too?

Myhill over Butland (had both prior to early WC) and Foster over Heaton the least two years have proved to be immensely frustrating selections. Cheers Pulis!

Punt on the best looking 4.5. Can't help but feel there's an element in chasing previous season's points in doing this. Ask Schmeichel owners for instance.

Butland I think might be down to 4.5. Well, hope.

I love the 4.5/4.0 keeper set up, and think grant might get 4.5 based on Myhill getting 4.5 last year through covering foster a lot in 14/15.

Might be looking at foster or even Begovic if he gets the 4.5 rating

I don't see why Butland will be 4.5. Think they'll look at ppm and past history to decide prices. Both 5.0m, I'm fairly certain. We're all getting Foster to save that extra 0.5m.

The new pro has the fancy response time which is class. You're future proofing by going for the 10.5 and, having got IOS 11 last night, I can say that I think you'll be thankful for the extra screen space. Apparently, with the reduced bezel on the 10.5, the difference in the jump up is more noticeable than it sounds.

Again, that's even better on the new 10.5 in terms of undetectable lag - it's just ridiculous. When I used it, I wished I was an artist so I could actually do something useful with it.

Just a quick thought on the whole Lacazette-not-proven myth

I think we, as PL fans, overrate how much skill is necessary to play and succeed in the PL. If Jamie Vardy can destroy the league purely due to sheer pace, it's not that challenging. If Troy Deeney is a consistent goalscorer, it's not that challenging. And most of all, if England is made up of English PL stars, why are they so average in international competition?

Most entertaining league in the world (and my favorite), without a doubt...but let's get over the idea that a striker like Lacazette isnt proven, period.

The French league is very underrated imo. Yes, it's not gripping in terms of enterntainment, but the vast majority of the foreign leagues aren't. Not due to the quality of their play but more down to our lack of our personal investment and knowledge into their respective pyramids. I can't wait to see how Hudders/Brighton fair for instance, as we know their story. The French/Italian/Portugese equivalent? Not so much

Yeah find it awfully ignorant how many players aren't rated as highly because they're not 'premier league proven'.

I'd like to see how 'premier league proven' players like Vardy, Livermore etc cope in European leagues. 😆

Well it's fair enough as an initial FPL signing - I won't be taking any early risks with new players so I get that. But in terms of my view of him as a player, I'm certainly optimistic he'll hit the ground running. Just wouldn't put my money where my mouth is 😉

Ibra is a class above Lacazette though. As are Messi, Bale, Neymar, Suarez, Ronaldo etc. Buying one of them and similar ilk is not a risk and is worth the money IMO.

There is slightly more risk with Lacazette as he is in the second level of player behind the players I mentioned.

Veron and Di Maria were in that second level when they came to the PL and look how they turned out. I think Lacazette probably has the physical attributes to flourish, but there will be some bedding in time.

It is not necessarily his quality it is the competitiveness of the PL that makes it more difficult. The PL is not a duopoly or monopoly like many of the other European leagues. It is also a more physical league which takes it out of you.

Deeney isn't really a consistent goalscorer. Vardy hit a hot streak in 15/16 - but those don't last forever (see last season when he went goalless for ages).

If you asked fans in each league who are the best and most consistent clubs in their leagues currently they would probably say something like:

          France: PSG and Monaco
          Italy: Juventus, Roma, Napoli
          Germany: Bayern and Dortmund(?)
Spain: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona
          Portugal: Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Porto
          Russia: CSKA, Spartak, Zenit

In England we would probably say: City, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool.

It was only 5 seasons and 4 seasons ago respectively since Utd won the title and Liverpool finished second. Utd won the Europa League and Liverpool got to a Europa League final. They are not rubbish teams - admittedly they are not in the elite bracket with Real, Barcelona etc. But competitiion is relative. The PL has 6 teams that are very similar and competition takes it toll physically.

Consistency is relative. We have six "consistent" teams in the PL, yet they're absolute shite in the UCL. Being the most competitive league doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is amazing, if anything modern results suggest they're all mediocre.

I didn't say they were the best. But competition is hard on the body, because it means more effort. Look at tennis - look at how Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, Federer cruised through the early rounds in their pomp and it was easy so they saved energy and then had tough matches against each other.

A few simplistic views in there but you're sort of right. It's not only the league itself, but how well certain players can integrate into different teams, systems etc. Lacazette can still flop in the PL despite being a proven scorer if he doesn't fit Arsenal's setup. He does on the face of things, but my point is that it's possible that players won't always do.

The fact Gomis scored 20 goals last season while only scoring three penalties has me slightly cautious regarding Lacazette's prospects. He also hasn't lit it up in the Champions League.

I think he'll do pretty well (maybe 18-20 PL goals assuming he gets spot-kicks) given the service he'll get, but I'm not sure he'll be a difference maker in big matches, say like Costa last season.More likely to feast against weaker opposition IMO.

Pricing will obviously be key FPL wise...

As I said - he could be in the same class of player as Bale, Neymar etc. But as of yet we don't know. Much like Suarez when he came to Liverpool. But also like Veron at Chelsea / Utd and Di Maria at Utd. Di Maria is a class player, but it didn't work out for him in the PL.

Not a like for like comparison, but using the prospecting method we've been using his 28g 3a last season works out as 266 points.

Now, he won't get that. But if Arsenal decide to prioritise 4th/better (so 4th) over the UEL I have a theory (that may or may not be aired in pod form soon) that they might turn into our fpl darlings this year if the UCL5 rotate like mad once that competition kicks off... With lacazette chief among the template strikers. Obviously complete conjecture

It's about systems a new player goes into, how they adjust to their new surroundings etc. You can't say Di Maria isn't better than half the players in the Prem, but things just didn't work out. Same with some players at clubs when a new manager comes in, suddenly one becomes amazing and another becomes poor. I think the Premier League 'Proven' label is useful. For example Lukaku has serious experience putting goals past Premier League teams on a consistent basis, whereas Lacazette does not. It's not to say he won't be amazing, but there is an unknown element in comparison.

SKY FF have released 4 more player prices:

    Defoe - £11
    Son - £10.8
    Vardy - £11.2
    Rashford - £11.1

I hope FPL does something similiar..releasing some player's prices before game relaunches. It's quite exciting 🙂

They did it for two years iirc. The 2011 messy opening and then they released a few the following year, presumably to calm those with pitchforks expecting a repeat. Siggy at Spurs was one in 2012 I think.

  15. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
    • 14 Years

Thinking of a 93.5m starting lineup, along lines of below... To allow maximum chances of both catching the early season bargain attacker, and reacting to whoever starts out as the in form big hitter/s, plus a relatively fire & forget defense (again with budget & transfer flexibility)

    4.5, 4.5 (9.0)
    6.5, 5.5, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5 (27.0) e.g. - Valencia, Baines, Bertrand, PVA, _____
    10.0, 7.5, 5.5, 5.5, 5.5 (34.0) e.g. - Mane, Siggy, Phillips, Stanislas, Pereyra
    12.5, 5.5, 5.5 (23.5) e.g. Kane, ____, _____

ITB 6.5m - allows any of the 5.5's to pretty much any other player for a FT, as long as not >12.0m... so that should help cover Aguero, Jesus, Hazard, Sanchez, Morata, Lacazette, Lukaku, Coutinho, Firmino, Pogba, Alli, Eriksen, Pedro etc as you can't predict which, if any of those big guns will hit early form

    Thoughts??

99% you won't stick to that plan. Impulse will kick in. Field the strongest team you can and pick up the points that are there instead of saving cash for points you 'anticipate' will be there.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Well it's three quarters of a decent midfield imo - most folks will have mane, siggy + a 5.5... It's really an additional 5.5 player temporarily in place of a big hitter, where the list is so long and spans both midfield & attack that you can box yourself into an early WC by selecting the wrong elite players in GW1. All subjective of course

        1. UnitedFan
          • 8 Years

If as you say, you pick the wrong elite players in GW1, this is where you have to be patient. You picked that player for a reason. Being patient with your picks is a common recurring theme in many 'lessons from last season' posts I've seen.

That is very true, knee jerk reactions are points killers. I'm definitely trying to avoid frequent transfer hits this year. That principle has worked so well for me in precious years but last year just went a bit transfer crazy... Got a high enough TV, but OR suffered all year for it. It's a slippery slope too, once you start the 4 point hits, its hard not to take another!

Yeah, no.1 rule of FPL (imho) is: patience in the right players. Simple but effective.

Even patience in the wrong players is a perversely decent habit in my book.

                6 years, 10 months ago

Definitely agree - so many times the slow & steady wins the race theory has been proved right. You just have to sit back & allowmthe FPL gods control in lean times & trust that the points will eventually dome back, rather than taking hits & then getting the double whammys of the player transferred in for a hit going cold & the player you lost faith in going back on form again.

                1. Ser Davos
                  • 8 Years
                  6 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, which is why I may sacrifice a bit of captaincy power for a better overall side that I hopefully won't be compelled to shred after a GW or two.

Some people are sharper on sussing form and for them, regular transfers and even hits can prove beneficial. However, I'm hopefully aware of my own foibles. Subsequently, slow and steady wins the race.

    4. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years

If you actually just start with Lacazette, or whoever, and he does 'hit early form' then you also get those points in the bag, if he doesn't then you can just switch to Lukaku or whoever. Also remember that ANY player is just a 4 point hit away, which in some cases is a cheap price to pay.

Also with that template your bench will be 4.5 4.5 5.5 5.5 which is too much imo.

As Lawro says, well worth rewatching. I avoided it for over 5 years and finally caved in 2 years ago. I was gobsmacked. Sheer, sheer quality. The only thing higher quality are the books - I went and read the whole canon, that's well over 5000 pages. You would get disappointed with the TV series if you read the books first, though.

See people already proposing WC strategies for the new season.

But not seen anyone suggesting WC'ing for GW1 and getting off to a flyer.

    I'm certainly considering it.....

I wonder will there definitely still be WC's? Haven't heard any rumblings about rule changes/scoring changes/ chip adds or deletes... Really hope they leave well enough alone this year to get some consistency after changing it the last few years.

Obviously without prices it will change.

If they get better backups to Koscielny and Mustafi, that's solved. Those two are good, don't think they got to form a connection with the inconsistencies in Arsenal's lineups

I think you've fallen into the trap of thinking that exposed defenders are bad defenders.

It's the lack of structure in the team that causes problems. Sanchez doesn't track back, Ozil cant defend, Xhaka (who I love) has a lot to learn defensively, and importantly the whole team dynamic can leave us open. It was worse this year because Ozil and Xhaka were the only 2 in the team who could actually keep the ball.

I am not laying anything negative at Billy Connolly's door he is great.

But it is scary how many people in the entertainment world of the past have there dark side. You talking about him being painted just got me thinking about Rolf Harris painting the queen, I think everyone though he was a good guy really and he definitely wasn't.

With no subs in Sky I think it will be very tough to buy Liverpool mids at those prices. When you depend on someone playing to be your captain foer a day and he doesn't play would be very frustrating. Much more so in Sky than FPL as you at least have a VC in FPL
