Moving Target – Wayne Rooney

Everton have this afternoon confirmed the return of Wayne Rooney on a two-year contract from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee, with the legendary striker’s career turning full circle.

Rooney is back at club he left in 2004 and joins Michael Keane, Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Henry Onyekuru as part of their hugely impressive summer recruitment programme.

In his first interview back in blue, Rooney described how he was “estatic” to return to his boyhood club.

“It’s a great feeling to be back. I cannot wait to meet the lads, get on the training pitch and then get on the pitch to play. Throughout the summer I’ve been working out where I was going to go. I spoke to my agent and said: ‘Listen, you need to speak to Everton, see if it can happen’. He said it could so I told him to speak to the Club and get it done as quickly as possible. It’s happened, I’m delighted, and I’m ready to go.”

Meanwhile, his new manager Ronald Koeman was equally buoyant about his latest capture.

“Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality – he knows how to win titles and I’m really happy he’s decided to come home. He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back. He is still only 31, and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.”

The History

Rooney is nothing short of a legend of English and Premier League football, boasting a career that seems destined to span just two clubs.

His early spell at Everton began aged just nine years old within their schoolboy ranks. Throughout that period, Rooney broke records and, by the age of 15, was already sharing the pitch with the under-19’s.

A first team debut arrived in 2002, with his first goals arriving in the most unglamorous of settings – a league cup tie at Wrexham. Two weeks later, at the age of 16, he was to score in the dying minutes of a Premier League encounter to seal a victory over Arsenal.

At the time, that strike established Rooney as the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. What was to follow was even more impressive.

Rooney was to play another 77 matches for Everton, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists before, almost inevitably, interest escalated, and a transfer request was made.

In 2004, Manchester United pounced with a £25 million deal with Rooney aged just 18-years-old. It was to prove money well spent.

Rooney’s 13-year spell with United ends having helped them to five Premier Leagues titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, three League Cups and the Europa League.

That illustrious career equated to 559 matches with 253 goals – United’s club record – along with 127 assists.

In Fantasy terms, the pinnacle of Rooney’s spell with United arrived in the 2013/14 season, with 17 goals, 12 assists and 38 Fantasy Premier League bonus points.

For that one season, Rooney was an established heavy-hitter but has never scaled such heights since.

Just 12 goals and five assists followed the in 2014/15 and, as Rooney gradually shifted from centre-forward, to a support striker to a raiding midfielder, his returns diminished.

He leaves United on the back of an indifferent campaign, built from just 15 Premier League starts, five goals and five assists.

It would surely be befitting, and appropriate if he now experiences a renaissance back at Goodison Park.

The Prospects

Fantasy managers will be willing for that to materialise.

Bar that one season, Rooney’s legendary status has never translated to the Fantasy sphere. In recent campaigns, we have rarely looked to him as a sound acquisition, let alone a player who could be trusted to sport the FPL captaincy.

Can that situation really change as part of Koeman’s impressive revolution?

While Rooney is still only 31-years-old, his decline as an attacking force has been marked.

If we assess the numbers behind that 2013/14 campaign, we find that he fired a shot every 24.2 minutes, with 42.6% of his efforts hitting the target.

The same player ended last season having produced a shot every 31.1 minutes, though tellingly, with more than half his paltry 20 attempts arriving from outside the box, only 20% found the target.

Rooney has clearly adapted his game as his pace and power has diminished. His arrival back at Everton coincides with Lukaku’s imminent departure in the opposite direction, but Koeman will surely continue to shop for a direct replacement for the Belgian striker. Rooney is unlikely to be the solution, with Koeman already emphasising Rooney’s versatility as an attacker.

“Everybody knows he can play out of different positions up front. He’s a smart player. He’s an experienced football player and that helps everybody.”

A deeper role, perhaps in the now traditional number 10 position, beckons. That will clearly tread on the toes of Ross Barkley and new signing Davy Klaassen, though both could find pitch time wide on the right of a 4-2-3-1, or perhaps with one working in tandem with Rooney behind a striker in a 3-4-2-1.

In truth, it is expected that Barkley will follow Lukaku out of Goodison Park, soothing that particular selection headache for Koeman and perhaps ensuring that, fitness permitting, Rooney has the opportunity to claim a regular starting role.

However, it remains to be seen if he can find enough in the tank to satisfy Koeman’s demands.

The Dutchman will insist on high pressing from his attacking players – Barkley may lack the discipline to execute that, but he has the legs. Klaassen has been signed because he possesses both. Rooney may need to adapt again to fit into Koeman’s masterplan.

For a second successive season, Fantasy managers will ponder whether Rooney will be re-classified as a midfielder. Unfortunately, the move back to Everton and its association with Lukaku’s departure makes that more unlikely.

He’s already classed as a forward in Sky Sports and priced at 10.4. Fantasy Premier League will be expected to follow suit, with perhaps a price tag of around £8.0m or less.

Rooney was valued at £9.0m in 2016/17, so a drop will be expected. Should he fall to £7.0m, he could rouse real interest. Higher than that, and Fantasy managers would surely have to witness a stark transformation in Rooney’s match fitness and confidence.

The burst of transfer activity at Goodison Park, coupled with the romance of his return, could yet inspire an extra yard of pace, a new willingness to raid the penalty area. There is no doubt that, when presented with opportunities, Rooney will seize them.

But the possibility of spot-kicks aside, goals may not be central to Rooney’s appeal for the duration of his spell back at Everton.

Koeman appears more likely to exploit his creative talents, harnessing a player who produced a key pass every 57.4 minutes in 2015/16 and 45.3 minutes last season.

That’s a superior rate to the likes of West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini (48.4 minutes) and Manchester City’s Leroy Sane (51 minutes) – players that are likely to be valued around Rooney’s price bracket as midfielders.

And therein lies the issue. For Rooney to truly be rekindled as a Fantasy asset, we surely rely on his reclassification as a midfielder.

We may have to wait another season for that to arrive and, regardless of his contract, it’s perhaps doubtful that Rooney’s remaining Premier League career will span that long before the lure of the US proves irresistible. His last hurrah as a Fantasy asset may never arrive.

What’s not in doubt is that Rooney will stretch every remaining sinew on his return to Goodison Park. Everton fans will be expectant but, in the main, Fantasy managers are likely to monitor with interest from afar.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Alli at 9.5 confuses me. 2nd best fpl scorer in the league, no real reason he would stop producing except Wembley effect and even so he performed pretty much the same away than at home (6 double figure hauls away vs 4 at home, although I may be wrong I just counted quickly) so that is negligible. With him at 9.5, there isn't much sense in pricing Hazard and KDB more than a mil more than him. Likewise, I can't see many other midfielders getting priced above 9.5 now. What is FPL Towers up to...

They might be putting all attacking mids in a narrow 8.5 - 10.5m price band. It worked well last year with the Liv and Spurs mids.

Then they'll put Lukaku and Kane at 12m and 13m apiece, just for kicks. Alexis might be around that price too.

What takes transfers so long? I don't understand why Chelsea let United to beat them to the signing of Lukaku. Why didn't they just bid the 75mil when the whole Costa fiasco happened and be done with it?

obviously. But the fact that Chelsea were willing to bid it when United came seems weird; Chelsea needed to be pro-active and not reactive in that situation, and now are left with a major problem

Chelsea weren't prepared to pay the exorbitant agent's fee on top of that but United were (he has the same agent as Zlatan, Mkhitarian, Pogba and Mourinho).

Also, Abramovic and Conte were not in agreement as to whether they really wanted him.

It's bonkers that Kane, Eriksen and Alli were all in the team of the season last year. Is that two years running?

I think we might see a couple of Liverpool and Man City mids split them up this year.

Have a really good buzz about this coming season. So many options in all positions now that clubs have signed some decent strikers!

Why all the Pogba love? only 115 points last season.
Only One double figure total in the second half of season
25 out of 30 games were 3 points or less

I get that Utd are likely to improve and will surely score more goals than last season but Pogba has a long way to go before being a prolific Fantasy asset

i think when gw1 actually hits, many of the people saying now that pogba will be in their gw1 side will find that they leave him out when the time comes. For me, if man u sign matic or someone along those lines, then pogba becomes an option worth considering, except even then, id still have much more reliable options to pick from

The opposite will happen in my opinion.. those that are slating him will all of a sudden realise his ownership is extremely high and be forced into jumping on whether they rate him or not as that is how they play the game

    2. KingNidge
      • 8 Years

No harm in taking a punt on him i would expect significant improvement with a full season under his belt and better players around him.. would fancy him to be on penalties too..

There's something to be said of strikers wanting to buff their stats with pens.

Kun has been nabbing them off Yaya for years, and Yaya is one of the best in the world.

      2. Wilshere Knowledge

I'd be surprised if Lukaku wasn't on them personally.

And does he have better players around him? Lukaku is an Ibra downgrade, and your only other signing is a CB, no?

He could improve, but I dont think there would be an improvement based on getting used to the league. He already dominates physically, it's really the mental side of the game he's lacking in, imo.

            Lies, damn lies and statistics.

People question how players will get on at bigger clubs, but with strikers they always seem to assume they'll score more.

I think Lukaku still has a lot to learn.

I think his primary failing is movement in tight spaces. He doesnt seeem very smart, and that issue would be worsened at a better club.

Ibra did hit the post more than he scored though. If they'd been a few cm the other way, he'd have converted a lot more chances. Unlucky.

          • 8 Years

I'd argue Lukaku is an upgrade with the pace he brings.. Ibra scored a lot of goals but we were painfully predictable with him in the side..

Add to that we are in the market for a Rooney replacement and a winger and CDM which will afford Pogba more freedom

I have no problem having a punt at 8 for the opening fixtures personally but each to their own

My opinion could change given signings, but planning with so many hypotheticals seems like getting ahead of yourself. 😉

I can see the logic on it, and I dont have opinions strong to the contrary, but I do find this mass love a little strange.

8m seems like a fair price, and a punt.

I agree and asked the same question. The answer makes sense. He was pulling the strings last year, his stats were good and if they buy a DM then it will mean he can play further forward. For 8m (I guess) he could be ok. I will get him if they get Dier or Matic.

His chances created numbers seem to have returned a normal level of assists imo. I might do a comparison tomorrow to see whether thats true.

His conversion numbers were also the same as his prior year, and from memory he was hitting the post from long range rather than missing good chances. As such I think returns on that basis could be unreliable. It's why Coutinho can go with extensive barron runs.

I think people are thinking if Man U get a Dier/Matic type player, suddenly Pogba will become a Yaya type player.

There seems to be potential, he hit the post and bar a fair few times, with a better defensive mid pairing of Herrera + New Player behind him, he could be good.

But will obviosuly avoid at the start.

    How does this tactic sound?
Avoid getting many high priced players from the start, which enables you to have a few millions to improve your squad where it needs the most, even as early as right after the first gameweek.
Last year I used all 100m to build the squad in the beginning, which made it hard to change things very soon, while forcing me to take hits in order not to get left behind.
This time, I think of building a squad of up to 95m, and improve it step by step.

    2. The Big Fella
      • 7 Years

My tactic is a bit more subtle. I intend to get the highest scoring players I can that fall within the budget I am given and then transfer in and out according to form and fixtures.

    3. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

I think the better tactic is building with a variance in player value.

Build with premium, mid price, and budget options in each position to give you that flexibility, rather than holding money back.

i would say thats a dangerous game, starting with a squad value of 100 mil puts you in a much better position to score points, not to mention it's just a 4 point hit to make big changes anyway, there isn't enough upside to starting with a 95 mil squad just to have the same amount of flexibility that you'd have by a -4 points in 2 week 2 transfers

It an interesting point. Every other week of the season people are happy to have a bit in the bank but GW 1 nearly everyone uses the full 100 and reduces flexibility

I'll max the cash and take the hits until about Christmas.

I regretted not taking an extra hit and not getting Heaton for4.5 over Foster early on last season.

Getting a 4.0 keeper that gets saves and a 4.5 who gets saved is key for me.

2 top tier defs with one that can be traded among the top 4 is key along with 2 4.0 nailed lads... and one 4.5 of course.

No idea what to do with mids or strikers yet. Depends how prices go.

Looking back, Foster over Heaton cost me 30+ points throughout the season on that one tranny that never got done. That one move would have gotten me top 10-15k instead.

          FPL golden years lol

It was easier since there was less people playing the game, no chips, no vice captain, games easier to predict, no FFS membership, lower clubs struggling more, and easier to pick players just by watching the games.

I also think I used to get ESPN (Now BT) games free on sky for those years too thinking about it

Judging from the prices sample we have so far, it looks like there will be lots of differentials between our squads, since there are many expensive big hitters.
So do you plan of using all 100m from the start, or leaving 2-3m in the bank to upgrade in case someone you don't own explodes and becomes essential?

This. I try to keep 0.5 when I can, just in case a player rises quickly after GW1, I'm not ready to pounce on Sunday, but I need the extra cash to bring him in later in the week. Other than that, I don't see much use in having a bunch of spare change lying around.

I think its important that you leave enough in the bank to switch a player to the most expensive one (or second most expensive if you've already got him).

This way any player is within your reach without a hit.

I started last season with Vardy and Aguero up front- well aware that Ibra might be needed, so left enough in the bank to do Vardy->Ibra. I needed to do the move, I did it and that was that.

Anyone miss the 'notes' link they had two seasons ago on the FPL page where you could write out notes and plan ahead for various scenarios and such?

Guess you could use a word document? Or pen and paper?

Apologies for the question that was probably asked 510,000 times, but when does fpl open?
