Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-season

Stoke City were the first Premier League side in first team friendly action as they began their pre-season tour of Switzerland with a 1-0 victory in the opening fixture of the “2017 Uhrencup”.

Neuchatel Xamax 0 Stoke City 1

With just five days of pre-season training behind them, Mark Hughes’ side played out their first summer encounter and earned a 1-0 win over Swiss second division side Neuchatel Xamax in the Tissot Arena.

The opening match in the four-team Uhrencup – which also features BSC Young Boys and Benfica – was decided by a late own goal as Hughes used the opportunity to field two different XI’s over the two halves.

Mixing first-team players and Under 23s, Hughes started the match in a 4-2-3-1 formation and fielded Jack Butland in goal ahead of a defence that included captain Ryan Shawcross and full-backs Phil Bardsley and Erik Pieters.

Bojan started in the central attacking midfield position, with want-away Marko Arnautovic also named in the starting line-up. Saido Berahino was the lone striker.

Hughes’ early plans were disrupted by a back injury for Bardsley, who departed on 19 minutes. The problem was later reported as a knee injury.

Berahino is a player who will be monitored by Fantasy managers in pre-season, with the former West Brom man surely burdened with the responsibility of scoring 15+ goals next season. Stoke’s official website described the striker’s appearance as “incredibly trim”, although he fluffed his lines having been presented the best opportunity of the first half.

The striker was replaced by Peter Crouch for the second period as Hughes retained the same shape. Giannelli Imbula, Glen Johnson and new signing Josh Tymon were also introduced.

It was Belgian starlet Thibaud Verlinden – promoted to the first team squad for 2017/18 – who provided the spark that led to the match’s decisive moment when his 87th-minute cross was diverted into his own goal by the unfortunate Mustafa Sejmenović.

Hughes seemed happy with the win and overall performance, explaining the intention behind his line-ups.

“We mixed it up tonight with some young guns and some more senior lads, and I think that was the right thing to do. We are just getting started, and it is all about getting the minutes on the pitch, getting the timing of your play right and I saw quite a bit of that tonight which is satisfying.”

However, the Potters boss is likely to have been distracted by confirmation of the transfer request submitted by Arnautovic earlier that day.

With a renewed bid from West Ham United looming, this threatens to cast a shadow over pre-season preparations, with Arnautovic a crucial component of the Stoke attack.

Hughes’ post-match response to the news indicated this was perhaps not a situation that will quickly be resolved.

“Marko and his people have put in a transfer request, but that happens on occasions. Any comings and goings are at our discretion, and it’s our decision ultimately. Players can express an opinion or a view in terms of where they see their future but at the end of the day contracted players are contracted to the club and ultimately we have the final say.”

Arnautovic limped off after the first half in Switzerland and it remains to be seen if yesterday’s breaking story impacts on his pitch-time in the fixtures to come.

Stoke’s next Uhrencup encounter is against BSC Young Boys on Wednesday.

Stoke City XI First Half: Butland; Bardsley (Edwards 19), Shawcross, Sweeney, Pieters; Adam, Jarvis; Arnautovic, Bojan, Telford; Berahino.

Stoke City XI Second Half: Haugaard; Johnson, Wollscheid, Souttar, Tymon; Muniesa, Imbula; Ngoy, Shenton (Campbell 80), Verlinden; Crouch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Does the normal transfer roll over when you use the free hits? Like you get your old team back with two frees?

Why don't FFS release an article to explain this chip. Have a FAQ section within the article.
Or maybe FFS wants the v same questions asked over and over to generate more traffic

Free Hit chip is great. Could have used it last year in the big blank GW28... Perfect week for that chip. No need to get stuck with a non-performing Philips for weeks.

It would also enable & potentially reward random captaincy gambles in GW28/cup weekends... Imagine captaining Mawson or Maguire & getting CS/goal/3 baps... It can turn one of the worst FPL weekends into one of the most exciting 🙂

However, price changes applied to their previous line-up will take effect on their return once the chip expires.

It a little unclear, but it would be impossible to lose the money you built up and still be able to afford the team so the answer has to be that you will not lose value

I'd imagine the price rises keep collecting in the background while your FH chip is active. So when it rolls to the next GW Kane is back in your squad as if he never left, including any price rises or falls that occured during the FH period?

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Problem is you're not going to transfer out for one week a player whose price is rising. However, if you transfer out a player whose price is falling, by the time you get them back they could have fallen by 0.6m!

I don't think they could price Mkhi less than 9.0... If he was 8.0 you could have Alli/Fabregas/Mkhitaryan for 24.5m, which would be insane. Hoping he is though mind you, as much as a lot is expected of Pogba this year, Mkhitaryan has previous for getting ridiculous amounts of goals & assists in bundesliga. If he/Lukaku get a good understanding it could be carnage for opposition defences

Interesting...I don't think they'll try pay again after how much UFPL flopped. at this point given its scale I don't think it needs to earn cash directly, it's a brilliant marketing exercise. keeps people interested in games they otherwise wouldn't be, and worldwide too.

If they offered a paid league would you join? As in exactly the same game & same leagues... But you can choose to pay a nominal fee (£1/£2.50/£5.00 etc) and you get entered into an overall money league with prizes for manager of the month, a cup competition, league placings etc. I think it would be awesome - as long as they didn't have a separate game like ultimate a few seasons ago - it needs to keep exactly same format.

You'd imagine out of 4m players they'd surely get 500k interested, at a once off £5 up front that's £2.5m of prize money to be shared out...

Imagine winning FPL money league & getting £1m prize lol... We could become full time proffesional FPL'ers 🙂

Maybe there are gambling laws they'd have to navigate

what else would you call people in your mini league that arent 'casuals' and obsessed like everybody else on here? people play in leagues where about half give a shit and the others dont. i would say 'rivals' in the half that do

not necessarily; It could be used if there is a turn in fixtures for one GW. And tbh, you only really want a couple for the big BGW, not a team filled with dross for the sake of it

I'm happy to try beat rivals based on their footy knowledge rather than their fpl knowledge so it's fine by me

Everton in for Benteke.. Think that would make a lot of sense. Can't see De Boer liking Tekkers style of play

Yeah that's what I thought too.

Who is available for Palace to buy though is my question.

Benteke with Baines & Coleman's crossing & Siggy's set pieces... He would score a million goals a season!

imagine they remove fpl id number and replace it with your last year rank, or a randomised number of you're new

Why is it called 'free hit' why not at least call it 'for one week only' or something it's not hard

Tell them it's FPL launch day.

Either they'll understand, or you'll have solid grounds to resign on the spot.
