Transfer Window Watch

We roll out our summary of the deadline day events so far, keeping you informed of the breaking transfer news over the next – possibly frantic – few hours.

We will ensure that this article is kept “live” over the remaining hours, adding the latest deals and our opinions as they are confirmed.

These will then elaborated on via a batch of Scout Reports and/or Moving Targets over the next few days.

Mamadou Sakho to Crystal Palace – deal confirmed 2.00am
The statistics show just what an impact the Frenchman had on loan at Selhurst Park last season – four of Palace’s seven clean sheets in 2016/17 came in the eight matches that Sakho started.

That was, admittedly, with Sam Allardyce at the helm and the Eagles defence have done little to convince us they are worth the investment under new manager Frank de Boer.

Priced at just 4.9 in FPL, Sakho looks set to cement a starting role in the heart of defence, regardless of whether the Dutchman opts for three our four at the back.

With both Manchester clubs and Chelsea to come in the next five, the Eagles’ defence remains one to avoid for now.

Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea – deal confirmed 1.30am
Chelsea have finally confirmed the deal for Leicester City’s title-winning midfielder, re-uniting him with former team-mate N’Golo Kante at Stamford Bridge.

Drinkwater is yet to appear this season, having sat out the first three matches for the Foxes with a thigh problem.

Priced at 4.9, he could present a fifth midfielder option although his starting role under Antonio Conte will be in question.

He arrives to compete with the likes of Tiémoué Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas for starts in the Chelsea double pivot. As a result, Drinkwater’s opportunities – certainly in the Premier League – look set to be limited.

Wilfried Bony to Swansea – deal confirmed 11.30pm
The Ivorian returns to the Liberty Stadium after failing to convince at Man City or on loan to Stoke last season.

Yet Bony’s previous record for Swansea – 25 goals and seven assists in 54 league appearances – serves a reminder of his abilities if handed regular pitch time.

With last season’s two main men – Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente – now plying their trade elsewhere, the upcoming schedule could see a new Swansea hero emerge.

Paul Clement has recently operated with a two-man frontline but the Ivorian’s lack of match sharpness, allied with a goal apiece for Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew away at Palace, indicates that he’ll be on the bench for now.

A cost of around 6.5 looks likely but it’s the 5.5-priced Abraham who piques our interest ahead of eight excellent home matches (NEW WAT HUD LEI BRI BOU WBA CPL) from now until Gameweek 19.

Davide Zappacosta to Chelsea – deal confirmed 11.25pm
Chelsea pushed a deal for the Torino full-back over the line at the death.

The 25-year-old is said to have signed a four-year contract for a sum believed to be in the region of £23 million.

A forward-thinking defender renowned for his crossing ability, Zappacosta has four international caps for Italy and made 29 Serie A appearances last season, providing five assists and a goal.

As a right-back by trade, the Italian will challenge Victor Moses for his starting berth, which, in turn, could see Moses provide an option on the left to back-up Marcos Alonso.

Fernando Llorente to Tottenham Hotspur – deal confirmed 11.15pm
A nailed-on starter when fit at Swansea City, the Spaniard’s move to north London seems set to deprive us of a very viable mid-price pick up front.

Llorente thrived in his debut season for the Welsh side, netting 15 times and playing a part in 51.4% of their goals when on the pitch. Indeed, he was the top value FPL forward in terms of points per million in 2016/17.

But with Mauricio Pochettino a firm advocate of lone striker systems, Llorente seems no more than either a Plan B off the bench or a fresh pair of legs late on to give Harry Kane a breather.

Nikola Vlasic to Everton – deal confirmed 8.10pm
The 19-year-old arrives from Hajduk Split on the back of three goals and an assist in his first six matches of the new season.

Eight goals in the previous three campaigns suggests he’s still got plenty of improving to do, though. The youngster is versatile enough to play on the flanks, in a central support role or even as a lone striker, though at five foot ten, he’s no target man.

Likely to come in around 6.5 and listed as a midfielder in FPL, Vlasic may well be eased into contention by Ronald Koeman, with appearances off the bench perhaps the likeliest start to life in the top-flight.

The fixtures turn in the Toffees’ favour from Gameweek 6, with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney on the radar from that point.

Molla Wague to Watford – deal confirmed 7.30pm
The centre-half is hoping for a happier return to the Premier League after a disastrous loan spell at Leicester. Handed his Foxes debut in the FA Cup, Wague sustained a shoulder injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season.

He’ll now join a host of centre-halves, included Younes Kaboul (currently injured), Miguel Britos (currently suspended), Sebastian Prodl, Christian Kabasele and Craig Cathcart in battling for the two centre-half roles in Marco Silva’s four-man defence. A price of 4.5 looks likely.

Ezequiel Schelotto to Brighton – deal confirmed 7.30pm
An attack-minded right-back, the former Sporting Lisbon man looks set to rival veteran Bruno for a role in Chris Hughton’s plans. Schelotto served up a decent five assists in the Portuguese top-flight last term and, at 28, boasts top-level experience in the Champions League.

A price of 4.5 is on the cards, matching the rest of the Seagulls’ defensive regulars. Yet it’s Lewis Dunk’s five efforts on goal that has caught our attention ahead of five favourable home matches (WBA NEW SOT STK CRY) between now and Gameweek 14.

Marvin Zeegelaar to Watford – deal confirmed 6.10pm
Beaten to the signature of Kieran Gibbs by West Brom, Marco Silva added to his options at left-back with the purchase of Zeegelaar from Sporting Lisbon.

Having tried to sign the Dutchman while in charge of Hull last term, the Hornets’ manager is clearly a fan and Zeegelaar could now push the hot-headed Jose Holebas for a role in the back-four.

Booked 14 times last term, the Greek has already served a one-match ban after a Carabao Cup dismissal, with his discipline remaining a major issue.

If the new signing comes in at 4.5 to Holebas’ 5.0, tallies of four goals and eight assists in the last three seasons shows he could offer decent value, with the Hornets looking a little more resilient under their new manager.

Nahki Wells to Burnley – deal confirmed 2.45pm
Having sold Andre Gray to Watford, Clarets’ boss Sean Dyche bolstered his options up front by acquiring the Bermuda international from Huddersfield Town.

The Clarets have mainly operated with a 4-5-1 set-up but Wells’ pace could see them revert to 4-4-2, particularly in home matches.

Wells is currently recovering from an ankle injury, though, with the new boy expected to be available “in a few weeks”.

With fellow summer signing Chris Wood now challenging Sam Vokes for the target man role, Robbie Brady is the best bet for those looking to invest ahead of a run of seven strong home fixtures (CRY HUD WHU NEW SWA WAT STK) in their next eight at Turf Moor.

Renato Sanches to Swansea – deal confirmed 2pm
The Welsh outfit’s manager Paul Clement has previously worked with the box-to-box midfielder during his six-month spell as Bayern’s assistant manager last year.

Named best young player at Euro 2016, Sanches struggled in his maiden season at the Allianz and started just six league matches, with a further 11 outings off the bench.

While regular minutes now look likely, he’s hardly renowned for his attacking output, supplying two goals and an assist in his final season at Benfica prior to the Bayern switch.

Still only 20, though, Sanches has the chance to improve at the Liberty and his arrival hands the Swans a real confidence boost ahead of some very strong fixtures.

He comes in at 5.0 in FPL but, for now, set-piece taker Tom Carroll remains their best value midfielder at 4.5.

Orestis Karnezis to Watford – deal confirmed 2pm
The 32-year-old arrives on loan from Italian side Udinese.

Karnezis started 33 Serie A matches last season, which suggests that he’s been brought to provide strong competition to current number one Heurelho Gomes.

Watford have chalked up back-to-back clean sheet under Marco Silva but considering that only Gomes and Miguel Britos – who is now suspended for three – started each of the first three Gameweeks, the new manager’s preferred regulars are still unclear.

Serge Aurier to Tottenham Hotspur – deal confirmed 12.30pm
A switch to London affords the Ivorian the chance to reignite his career after struggling to cement a regular role at Paris Saint Germain, with just 53 starts over the course of the previous three league seasons.

Despite that relatively limited pitch time in the French capital, Aurier’s total of 16 assists over the last four Ligue 1 campaigns was more than any defender.

He now looks set to challenge Kieran Trippier for the right-back or right wing-back berth under Mauricio Pochettino.

Looking at the underlying numbers, he trailed Trippier for minutes per key pass (to 43.5) and success rate (12.8% to 24.1%) last season, yet the latter started just six times last season and was deemed no more than back-up for Kyle Walker.

A price of 6.0 is more expensive than Trippier’s 5.4 but with Danny Rose still injured, our money’s on Ben Davies (5.6) as the most profitable Spurs defensive option until the new boy settles and we get a clearer idea on Pochettino’s rotation.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool – deal confirmed 12pm
Just as he finally established himself as a regular for Arsenal, the England international has departed Liverpool to feature under Jurgen Klopp.

His versatility affords the Reds’ manager options in central midfield and on the flanks, which arguably increases the likelihood of rotation should they progress through the Champions League.

With Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in pole position for the wide roles in a 4-3-3, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s best bet maybe to secure a spot in the centre of the park.

Bearing in mind that Georginio Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana served up 149 and 139 points respectively from these positions last season, the new arrival – at just 6.0 in FPL – is certainly worth monitoring.

For now, though Mane, Salah and Roberto Firmino remain the favoured Reds’ picks.

From an Arsenal point of view, his departure could now see Sead Kolasinac handed the left wing-back berth. The Bosnian dropped to the bench in last week’s 4-0 mauling at Anfield but could now profit from three home matches (BOU WBA BRI) in four. The Gunners are, however, likely to be low on confidence following events at Anfield and – to this point – the inactivity in the transfer market.

Looking at Chelsea and Everton's transfer windows, I'm going to think Hazard, Morata, Siggy and an Everton def are going to be absolutely vital on a GW8 WC

Agreed, though it'll be Siggy, Keane, and then either Hazard or Morata for me. I don't want too many players over 9.5m. I have come to believe that it's better to have lots of 8-9.5 players then to have a few at 10+ and then have to cut corners elsewhere.

You need captain options. One of Kane/Morata/Lukaku or possibly Sanchez when he's firing is a must.

All the more reason if they have city. Should be a goal fest. As you have adequate bench at moment I'd pay the extra for Mane. I don't look at stats or anything but on the eye test I think he's the better player and more likely to create his own / other chances

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Are the Transfer deadline day failures to our advantage?

In many ways it looks like what didn't happen yesterday could be far better for Fantasy managers than what did.

Swansea's failure to land competition for Kyle Naughton makes him a more secure option ahead of their good fixture run.

Brighton's failure to land a striker makes fielding a defender against them a must each week. So hang on to your Bournemouth defenders for GWK 5 and WBA defenders for GWK 4.

Sanchez's failure to move could present us with a good Arsenal attacking option - should they recover their form. At Man City he would surely have been dead as a Fantasy option due to rotation.

Mahrez could now be a good option ahead of Leicester's fixture turn.

There are just some of the ones I've spotted.

Which non-moves on transfer deadline day attracted your interest.

And what key issues will you be looking out for over the coming weeks regarding new recruits - or lack of them?

Coutinho not moving (could still happen today I think) is an advantage depending on how you look at it.

If he slots into centre midfield then he's likely to provide creativity which could help Salah, Mane and Firmino.

On the other hand he may take away some of the points from the front 3, and given they have so many centre midfielders now he might also mean Klopp can rotate the front 3 more often.

Better if Coutinho leaves. Rotation at Pool will ruin them as options. 9m for Mane or Salah is just too much if rotated regularly

I have to disagree here. If you don't have depth in the squad all their assets will fade with so many different competitions to play in.

I've mentioned it above, but Mahrez looks very enticing given Leicester's potentially tasty fixture list. It'll be interesting to see whether he keeps up his good start or if the disappointment of a deadline day move gets to him. He could still move tonight though, so let's wait and see.

On a personal level its devastating. To go from now until January with only Hemed and Murray up front means we could break non scoring records 🙁

Ryan's place to lose. Krul brought in for competition and cups. But if Ryan's form drops Krul will take the jersey.

We had no real competition for Ryan so its a good signing.

              Sad about no striker though.

I don't own a Bournemouth defender and if I did, I'd be kicking myself and looking to sell even ahead of Brighton 😀

Agree on Mahrez, he's looked decent so far and of his head doesn't drop he is attractive at the price. Looked tremendous at times last week.

Agreed, its why I'm holding onto Francis and hoping he recovers from his injury prior to that match! Bournemouth looked a lot better against City than they had in their opening 2 games, I feel they are about to turn the corner 🙂

Yep, tend to agree - what didn't happen appears to have had more impact.

Alonso nailed on I'd say. Unless Conte wants to use Moses on the left.

VVD staying causes issues at Southampton. Will he be frozen out till January? The Saints now have two Dutch international CB's to threaten Yoshida and Stephens.

While I'm here, I'm being very cautious on Bony's prospects - pretty amazed that Swansea have gone back from him. If Hughes didn't fancy him, there must have been something wrong.

Andy Townsend on Bony last night: “He looks like he can hardly move. He can’t get around the field. When he played sporadically at City it looks like someone whose legs have gone and shouldn’t be in that company. He doesn’t need to find a yard of pace he needs to find two or three. The Bony I watched at Stoke was unrecogniseable to the one I saw at Swansea.”

VVD is annoying as a Stephens owner.

Stephens and Yoshida owners need to be on red alert and ready to swap as soon as.

Luckily Everton and Leicester's fixtures turn soon so we have plenty of options.

With VVD staying isn't that a good thing for Cedric/Bertrand ownders? Can see more clean sheet potential with VVD in the heart of that defense.

Maybe Southampton will move into the 3 at the back territory like all the cool kids are doing these days

                  Cedric - VVD - Stephens - Yoshida/Hoedt - Bertrand

I'd like Bertrand as a wing back 🙂

Yep - I have Stephens (dropped?), Jones (injured?) and Terence Trent Alexander Armstrong (rotation?) making up 3 of my backline. Put together with having Tom Carroll (rotation?) and Loftus-Cheek (injured?) I could be down to 9 men by the time the next game kicks off!

Possibly but more likely Dawson to RB, Evans alongside Hegazi with Nyom at LB until Gibbs is up to speed. Nyom ultimately dropped. However, another blunder from Hegazi and his early season form will be forgotten and he'll be out.

Having said that, I reckon Tony will prefer to have Hegazi, Dawson and Evans on set-pieces rather than have two full-backs in Nyom and Gibbs.

I think Pulis is trying to step things up at West Brom now, as he did at Stoke, and establish them as a solid, top-half side.

Gibbs and Nyom are there to play as proper full backs, Krychowiak on paper is the signing of the summer for me, and Barry's understated class should help compensate for the loss of Fletcher. Rodriguez and Burke should provide a little extra spark in attack, although they'll remain a cautious, pragmatic side.

Nyom is 6'2 himself, and playing very well so far this season - I don't see Pulis seeing playing both him and Gibbs as conceding too much defensively. Dawson and Evans are probably the two first defenders on the team-sheet, and whilst Gibbs might be eased into the team, I think he must have been promised first team football to make the move. I'm still not sure Hegazi is ahead of McAuley in the pecking order, either.

There should be a special rule for West Brom centre backs. You should be allowed to play them anywhere and have as many as you like.

Let's have a Pulis chip next season

Coutinho staying would be a concern for Liverpool assets & rotation.
VVD staying (combined with Hoedt signing) must threaten both Yoshida and Stephens. Hate to say it but a sideways transfer to Cedric seems to be a safer option.
Evans not going means Hegazi could be under threat (particularly when McAuley is fit).
Unless there is an explosive response from Sanchez not even considering him. Could easily end up wide left like end of last season where his returns were steady but not worth price tag.
Did Newcastle get a keeper in in the end? If not Elliot remains a decent option - budget-wise.

As discussed in the week, Brighton failing to sign a striker makes Hemed seem like a decent cheap bench striker in a price range that offers no guarantees.

Newcastle didn't bring in another keeper to challenge Elliot - in fact, they let Krul go out on loan, so our 4.0 keeper looks nailed on for the foreseeable future.

Everton are sparse in central defense, especially if playing a three. Jagielka could be a great option in a few weeks.

I'm a bit worried that Liverpool will turn into another Man City minefield if Coutinho stays.

Abraham and Ayew worth monitoring to see if supply improves, can't see Bony contributing until they've weened him off the 20-a-day pie habit.

Mahrez still sat in the airport, like Tom Hanks in 'The Terminal'. Or Odemwingie on a bigger budget. I wonder where is head will be now he's no longer in the shop window?

Have to disagree Son. As a wildcarder myself I'm comforted with the lack of upheaval.

Had to hit the chip to restructure the team and fix my dysfunctional defence and with less than desirable info to go on I'm glad that the waters haven't been muddied too much.

Wouldn't have punted on a new signing at this stage (unless bale or such), lack of movement actually helps focus.

Very hard to tell. More upside to Aurier, but both will be eased in slowly over the next month. Ultimately I'd expect Sanchez to get marginally more minutes, but Aurier to get more points. Will be close and I wouldn't rush to get either.

Happy that sanchez deal didn't go through as a Jesus owner.

No way Sanchez can be worth his tag playing in a deflated Arsenal team. His failure to leave has to effect him. Wouldn't be surprised to see his discipline diminish in a similar way to Kuns last year when he realised he was no longer first choice

Sanchez doesn't do de motivated. He could emerge from a war zone with chronic post traumatic stress, with no legs and be told that he's been made bankrupt and he'd still come waddling out for Arsenal giving it his all.

Would look at changing all 3 starting defenders, perhaps Can & Ince also..

Can has really impressed me. He'd be in my WC team but now Coutinho is staying I expect him to drop back and anchor the midfield. He won't be popping up in the box as much now. I've gone for Atsu instead. Decent fixtures and attacking threat

Yeah I've liked the look of him but as you say with Courtinho looking like he's going to stay will his minutes be cut down and he will be sitting back a lot more.. Watford forwards look good value as a replacement

I was in similar position. All 3 of your defenders could be on the bench within the next fortnight. WBA fans seem to think it will be Dawson and Evans CB pairing.

It's only a matter of time before VVD and Hoedt start for Sot.

I was in a similar position and pulled the trigger on WC after last nights transfer activity / lack of.

Exactly my thoughts! Got a week to ponder but I'm worried as I clearly skrimped on subs which makes the risk even higher!

I pulled trigger today before any more price movement as was just affordable. Really like my starting 11 but the bench is risky:

                  Foster
                  Cedric Jones Naughton
                  Alli Salah Pogba Atsu
                  Kane Lukaku Firmino

                  Elliot Mbemba Chalobah 4.0

Rotated with Murray....then also Baldock when he's fit.

while I dont think for a second Llorente is going to start ahead of Kane i do think Pocche fears burnout for his main striker(particularly with CL) and llorente will be somebody who will come on for the last 20/25 mins. he is better with his head than kane and with erikssons crossing it could lead to more late goals for spurs... so Kane staying on for the full 90 might be something thats a bit more restricted

Yes but only if Spurs have made the game safe, by which time you've probably already banked your Kane points.

why only if the game is safe? it could be 0-0 or 1-1 and spurs need a winner and kane is stuck on 2 points then gets hooked

If they need a goal will go with 2 up front. Can't see Kane coming off unless the points are in the bag.

I'm wondering too as don't get why Llorente would move just for bench + some cup games. Not saying this won't happen but he's 32 not 42 and still looked good at times last season (except when I bought him).

              RMT on WC, 0.2 ITB

              Foster, Elliot

              Jones, Cedric, Naughton, Lowton, Lowe

              Mane, Alli, Pogba, Ritchie, Carroll

              Morata, Lukaku, Firmino

Pretty much identical to mine so I like it.

I have Kane + Atsu instead of Morata + Ritchie.

Any price changes before next deadline likely for:
              KDB
              Jones
              Salah
              ?

Atsu seems like a player who was underpriced. Surely should've been at least 5.5 to start off with? He's certainly a terrific option!

didn't they spend 12mil on a Norwich winger? I think most thought Atsu wouldn't start

              Foster (Eliott)
Stephens - Daniels - Kolasinac (TAA - Long)

In terms of WC now it seems most likely to use it on GW8, It seems most likely to use it on GW7/8 when the next international games fall and itll give us a good idea of how the teams are settling in and what players are nailed, so who would be the most likely players for that WC – Alonso, MUN Def, Hazard, Erisken, Mane, Kane, Firmino, Morata ?

              GK: De Gea,
              Defence: Davies, Stephens, Dawson
              Midfield: Willian, KDB, Salah, Atsu
              Forwards: Kaku, Kane, Gabb

              Bench: Elliot Carroll, Mee, Rangel.

I have two fts is kdb, willian and de gea out worth a -4 for Alli, Pogba and Fabianski?

If not please advise on transfers please? Quite desperate to get rid of willian as hazard is back now and pedro will likely start over willian.

Very risky, what happens if Wenger goes to a back 4 like he did in the second half at Anfield?

Monreal will be ahead of him surely?

Not sure Arsenal have many clean sheets in them when you look at how sloppy they were against Liverpool.
