Dugout Discussion – Chelsea vs Man City

The day concludes with the headline act as champions Chelsea take on early pacesetters Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

The next 90 minutes will be of huge interest for Fantasy managers, with both these teams enjoying improved fixture schedules to follow this encounter.

In attack, Sergio Aguero’s absence with a rib injury throws us a curveball but hands an opportunity for Gabriel Jesus to play his way back into our plans.

Meanwhile in opposition, Alvaro Morata will add the latest chapter to his hugely impressive start to the season. He takes 528,000 new owners into this match, having been the top transfer target ahead of today’s deadline.

There are also key assets on show in midfield, with Eden Hazard auditioning for a role in our squads with this evening’s performance – he makes his first Premier League start.

Elsewhere, David Silva and Raheem Sterling will bid to boost their burgeoning Fantasy stock as the leading scorer and assister among midfielders.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Has anyone else noticed the cycle on here? The metamorphosis of starting as a troll ---> to a known trolly poster ---> to a well known poster ---> to a decent poster.

    Happens all the time

I don't have exact examples, but I feel like it's a pattern within human behaviour online. There's complete anonymity, and it encourages trolling, then the more you become known, the more you identify with your screenname or grav, and eventually a lot of people end up just being themselves on here. I can think of several but not an exact example to give you

Why does everyone is want rid of Mkhitaryan? Assisting Lukaku + corners for a side full of 6 footers = points, tough fixtures yes but Hudds in between and then 2 great ones, we all have value on him too so think carefully if you're willing to lose him. 8-8.2m is what we bought him for, great value.

Mkhitaryan has played Two good games. Gw1 and Gw2 since then he has reverted to last seasons version.

Was the new "expected goals (xG)" data released too soon? Should this have not been properly tested before we were advised to captain Lukaku over Kane?

While we’ve yet to release our Expected Goals (xG) data – (this is planned for an update over the break)- we do have access to the numbers on our test servers.

Lukaku at Old Trafford has an xG of 2.90 with three goals to his name, while Kane’s xG away from home is 2.72 with four goals scored. This indicates that Kane has so far operated beyond the expected level in terms of goal conversion in away matches. While Lukaku has delivered as expected based on the quality of chance that has come his way.

As we might expect, this data indicates possible regression from Kane in away matches.

The way to look at expected goals is that it shows how many decent chances a player is getting. That is it.
So Lukaku gets more, but Kane is more clinical

People keep misunderstanding xG. It's just the probability a certain shot goes in based on thousands of previous shots from lots of players. A player with great finishing will obviously be better than the average player at converting shots into goals and overperform their xG. A player with bad finishing will underperform. Simple.

    2. HALFSPACE
      • 6 Years

Forget xG for a second, Kane's stats per 90 for total shots, shots in the box, chances created/key passes > Lukaku's stats per 90

Basically in this case though Kane is in beast mode and therefore will break the stats models.

This. Same scoreline and United had 3.14 xG whereas Spurs had 1.56 xG.

We can't get it right every time. Stats are only a guide, but the outcomes don't always match them. We got the prediction that United would score a lot right, just that Lukaku wasn't among the points much.

Virgin shouldn't be moaning about being misled by the numbers is the point I'm trying to make. It was essentially a 50-50 that went the wrong way for him. Kane outscoring Lukaku this week shouldn't really have come as a massive surprise.

100 % true. Watching the games is much better than messing with all these numbers. Soon as I started playing with stats I started to regress as a player. Watch the games if possible and use that as a good way of picking your players. If you can't watch the games then stats come in useful.

Kaku isn't fit to lace Kanes boots. Another Fact 😉

xG is an indication of how many goals the average player should score. The top strikers normally score more than their xG because they're better finishers than the average player.

      • Cok3y5murf
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

        It doesn't indicate regression, imo.

It indicates that Kane has been in extraordinary form (either that or fortunate but we know from watching him that it's the former) whereas Lukaku has been more or less ordinary/average. Kane and Lukaku both outscored their xG last season comfortably, indicating that they were in extraordinary form. They didn't regress.

So Kane looks to be in better form, although it could all change in the next game, so I wouldn't conclude anything.

      A) Fabianski (Elliot)
      Alonso, Kolasinac, Bertrand (Rosenior, Long)
      Salah, Jese, Mhky, Tarrol (RLC)
      Lukaku, Vardy, Kane

      B) Hart (Elliot)
      Azpi, Maguire, Cedric, Kiko (Mbemba)
      Coutinho, Richarlison, Sterling (Tarrol, A.King)
      Lukaku, Jesus, Kane
