Line-Up Lessons – Gameweek 7 – Part Two

As expected, Gabriel Jesus replaces Sergio Aguero in an otherwise settled Man City team, while Jose Mourinho surprises us all by starting a doubtful Phil Jones, while resting Eric Bailly in his defence. Elsewhere, Chancel Mbemba is omitted by Rafa Benitez while Virgil van Dijk is reinstated to the Southampton rearguard.

Here’s part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from Gameweek 7, with one eye on developments after the international break. Part one can be viewed here.

Manchester City

Starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph; Fernandinho;  De Bruyne (Danilo 90), D Silva (B Silva 76); Sterling, Sane (Gundogan 84), Jesus. Subs not used: Bravo, Mangala, Zinchenko, Toure.

  • What we saw: Pep Guardiola kept faith in the 4-1-2-3 formation for the trip to Chelsea, with Gabriel Jesus returning as the central striker in place of the injured Sergio Aguero. In the absence of Benjamin Mendy, Fabian Delph was preferred to Danilo at left-back. He was later introduced, along with Ilkay Gundogan in order to hold onto the 1-0 lead, leaving just Raheem Sterling and Jesus in attack.
  • What we learned: With a home fixture against Stoke City up next, Guardiola is expected to continue with the 4-1-2-3 system. Man City do face Napoli in the UEFA Champions League in between Gameweeks 8 and 9, though, so rotation is a concern. Jesus should lead the attack against the Potters, but there is a chance Aguero may be ready to return against Burnley. Bernardo Silva is a viable alternative to Sterling, Sane and David Silva, while Gundogan could also be a factor in central midfield. Danilo should see some minutes in either full-back position over the next two league fixtures, while Vincent Kompany (calf) may be ready to return after the international break, threatening Stones’ pitch-time in particular.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Full-backs, central defenders, flanks

Manchester United

Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Young; Matic, Fellaini; Mata (Herrera 76), Mkhitaryan (Lingard 66), Rashford (Martial 71); Lukaku. Subs not used: Bailly, Blind, Romero, Darmian.

  • What we saw: Jose Mourinho retained the usual 4-2-3-1 formation for the visit of Crystal Palace to Old Trafford, with Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones and Marouane Fellaini – who had all been pre-match doubts to varying degrees – available to start. Eric Bailly was handed a rest, with Chris Smalling given his first league start of the season in central defence. The Man United boss switched to a 4-3-3 late on, with Ander Herrera in central midfield, and fellow substitutes Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial flanking central striker Romelu Lukaku.
  • What we learned: Mourinho continues to favour the 4-2-3-1, particularly against the lesser sides, but with a trip to Liverpool up next, there is a reasonable chance he opts for a more solid 4-3-3. That could mean Herrera joining Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini in central midfield, with Juan Mata more likely to make way than Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the right of a front three. Martial and Rashford continue to be locked in rotation for the left flank role, although Rashford has now started six of the seven Gameweeks, with Martial used mainly in European ties. In defence, Bailly will be expected to return to replace Smalling at Anfield.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, attacking midfield

Newcastle United

Starting XI: Elliot; Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Manquillo; Shelvey, Merino (Hayden 75); Ritchie, Perez (Diame 90), Atsu; Joselu (Gayle 78). Subs not used: Murphy, Lejeune, Darlow, Gamez.

  • What we saw: Rafa Benitez stuck with the 4-4-1-1 system for the home meeting with his former club Liverpool, but did opt to recall former Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey in place of Isaac Hayden. Chancel Mbemba was also surprisingly left out of the matchday squad, with Javier Manquillo recalled at left-back.
  • What we learned: Following another positive result, we should see a very similar line-up for the trip to Southampton. Manquillo and Shelvey may have done enough to retain their starts ahead of Mbemba and Hayden, while changes appear unlikely elsewhere. Matt Ritchie has withdrawn from the Scotland squad due to a knock, but he will be expected to be in contention for the south coast trip. The likes of Florian Lejeune, Jacob Murphy and Dwight Gayle all look unlikely to force their way back into the starting XI for now.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Left-back, central midfield

Southampton

Starting XI: Forster; Cedric Soares, Van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand; Romeu, Lemina (Austin 86), Davis (Boufal 61); Tadic, Long, Redmond (Gabbiadini 67). Subs not used: McCarthy, Hoedt, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse.

  • What we saw: Mauricio Pellegrino decided to hand a first start of the season to Virgil van Dijk, with Wesley Hoedt making way in central defence. The rest of the side remained unchanged in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation. Sofiane Boufal was introduced onto the left wing just after the hour mark. Dusan Tadic moved to the No 10 role, and Shane Long to the right once Manolo Gabbiadini was brought on as the lone striker. That became a 4-2-4 late on, with Charlie Austin joining the Italian up front.
  • What we learned: After making a strong impression from the bench, Boufal could come into contention for a start when Newcastle visit St Mary’s in Gameweek 8. Any of the three starting attacking midfielders could make way, while in attack, Gabbiadini and Austin are viable alternatives to Long. Van Dijk and Yoshida may again be favoured in central defence, although Hoedt will push for a recall should Pellegrino wish to freshen things up.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, flanks, attacking midfield, lone striker

Stoke City

Starting XI: Butland; Zouma, Cameron, Wimmer; Diouf (Johnson 90), Fletcher, Allen, Pieters; Shaqiri (Afellay 87), Choupo-Moting, Berahino (Crouch 70). Subs not used: Grant, Tymon, Adam, Sobhi.

  • What we saw: Potters boss Mark Hughes used a 3-4-2-1 formation against Southampton, with Xherdan Shaqiri playing centrally behind lone striker Saido Berahino, while Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting operated wider on the left. Hughes welcomed back Kurt Zouma, Geoff Cameron and Kevin Wimmer in central defence, with Glen Johnson and Ramadan Sobhi dropping to the bench.
  • What we learned: Jese Rodriguez missed the 2-1 victory due to compassionate leave but the Spaniard should be available again for the Gameweek 8 trip to Manchester City. Despite scoring the winner against the Saints Peter Crouch appears unlikely to force his way into the starting XI for City, so Jese could get the nod over Berahino in attack. Bruno Martins Indi (groin) isn’t expected to be available for the trip to the Etihad, while Ryan Shawcross (back) remains doubtful, so the three-man defence looks set to remain untouched.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, lone striker

Swansea City

Starting XI: Fabianski; Naughton, Fernandez, Mawson, Olsson (Clucas 87); Britton (Roque Mesa 69); Sanches, Ayew, Carroll; Abraham, Bony (Fer 46). Subs not used: Nordfeldt, van der Hoorn, Rangel, Narsingh.

  • What we saw: After ending the Gameweek 6 defeat to Watford in a 4-1-2-1-2 midfield diamond, head coach Paul Clement stuck with that system for the trip to West Ham. Ayew started at the tip with the recalled Leon Britton at the base. Renato Sanches also returned in central midfield for the Swans, with Sam Clucas and Leroy Fer dropping to the bench. Fer was introduced at half-time, with Bony feeling tightness in his hamstring. The Dutchman operated at the tip of the diamond, with Ayew shifted slightly further forward in support of Abraham.
  • What we learned: The Welsh outfit have confirmed that Bony suffered no injury at the London Stadium, so providing he returns from international duty fully fit, he should be available for the Gameweek 8 clash at home to Huddersfield Town. Clement is expected to keep with the back four, so his options appear to be to either stick with the 4-1-2-1-2 formation, or consider switching to a 4-3-3. In the 4-1-2-1-2, Ayew, Bony and Abraham all appear certain starters, with Roque Mesa, Fer and Sam Clucas different options in midfield. Both Nathan Dyer and Ki Sung-yeung have featured for the U23s over the past week as they look to build up their match fitness, and may have an outside chance of being available to feature from the bench against the Terriers.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks, forwards

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Lloris; Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen; Trippier (Walker-Peters 82), Winks, Dier, Davies; Eriksen (Sissoko 74), Alli; Kane (Son Heung-min 87). Subs not used: Vorm, Nkoudou, Llorente, Foyth.

  • What we saw: Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino again turned to the 3-4-2-1 formation against Huddersfield Town, although he did hand a first league start of the season to Harry Winks, who replaced Moussa Sissoko in central midfield. Kieran Trippier came in for the suspended Serge Aurier at right wing-back.
  • What we learned: Following the emphatic 4-0 win, Pochettino is expected to stick with the majority of the same side for the visit of Bournemouth to Wembley after the international break. Sissoko could replace Winks in central midfield, while Mousa Dembele will also be an option if he is fit following an ankle injury. Aurier will be available again following his one-match ban and is a viable alternative to Trippier at right wing-back. Son Heung-min could operate on the left wing if Pochettino considers switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation against the Cherries, with Davinson Sanchez’s start in doubt should he use that system.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Right wing-back, central midfield

Watford

Starting XI: Gomes; Femenia, Mariappa, Kabasele, Holebas; Doucoure, Capoue (Pereyra 62); Carrillo (Gray 74), Cleverley, Richarlison; Deeney. Subs not used: Karnezis, Janmaat, Britos, Hughes, Watson.

  • What we saw: Despite Miguel Britos being available following his three-match ban, Marco Silva decided to stick with Adrian Mariappa and Christian Kabasele in central defence against West Bromwich Albion. The Hornets head coach only made one change, with Troy Deeney handed his first league start of the season in place of Andre Gray as the lone striker in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation. When Silva decided to introduce Roberto Pereyra, he switched to a 4-1-4-1, with the Argentine joining Tom Cleverley in central midfield. The Watford boss then switched to a 4-4-2, with Pereyra moving out to the right and Gray joining Deeney up front.
  • What we learned: Silva demonstrated that when chasing a match, he isn’t afraid to throw men forward in more attacking formations. Up next for the Hornets is a home meeting with Arsenal, so Britos may push for a recall in central defence, while should either Sebastian Prodl (hamstring) or Younes Kaboul (leg) be available, they could also be in contention. Gray’s pace on the counter-attack could see him get the nod over Deeney’s physicality against the Gunners.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, lone striker

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Dawson, Hegazi, Evans, Gibbs; Krychowiak, Barry; Brunt (Livermore 62), Rodriguez, Phillips (McClean 58); Rondon (Robson-Kanu 72). Subs not used: Myhill, Nyom, Morrison, Chadli.

  • What we saw: Baggies head coach Tony Pulis opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation against Watford. Salomon Rondon returned as the lone striker, with Jay Rodriguez operating just behind the Venezuelan. Matt Phillips (right) and Chris Brunt (left) were handed recalls out wide, with Jake Livermore and Allan Nyom dropping to the bench. Pulis switched to a 4-5-1 during the second half, with James McClean taking over down the right wing, while Rodriguez shifted over to the left.
  • What we learned: It’s likely we’ll only see Pulis switch to a back three against the leading clubs, so with a trip to Leicester City up next, he is expected to use either a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-2-3-1 formation. Ahmed Hegazi continues to keep his place in the side, but with Nyom and, potentially, Gareth McAuley, options in defence, the Egyptian remains at risk. Pulis has plenty of midfield options, with Livermore and James Morrison possible starters. Hal Robson-Kanu remains the back-up option to Rodriguez and Rondon in attack.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Defence, central midfield

West Ham United

Starting XI: Hart; Zabaleta, Fonte, Reid, Cresswell; Kouyate, Noble (Lanzini 62); Antonio, Chicharito (Sakho 78), Ayew (Masuaku 78); Carroll. Subs not used: Adrian, Byram, Ogbonna, Rice.

  • What we saw: Having been favouring a 3-4-3 formation of late, Slaven Bilic switched to a 4-2-3-1 system for the home encounter with Swansea. With the match at 0-0, the Hammers boss brought on the fit-again Manuel Lanzini for Mark Noble in central midfield, while Arthur Masuaku operated out of position on the left wing in place of Ayew.
  • What we learned: The change of formation eventually paid dividends for Bilic, but there remains uncertainty over which system he’ll favour. In a 4-2-3-1, it’s difficult to get the best out of both Carroll and Chicharito. But it does allow Antonio, Lanzini and Marko Arnautovic – who missed out due to illness last weekend – to start in the attacking midfield positions. Ayew and Diafra Sakho provide other attacking alternatives, while Masuaku has impressed in a couple of matches coming on as a left winger. Bilic has so far, at least, been reluctant to use a 4-4-2, though that may have been influenced by the number of injuries he’s had to deal with. In a back four, it’s likely that Angelo Ogbonna will continue to miss out.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Flanks, attacking midfield, forwards

How does Alli + Salah ➡ Hazard + Sane for -4 sound?

2 big differentials with awesome fixtures coming in for 2 players with bad fixtures and poor form (Salah not so much though). Gives me -

P.S. - I'll not do that if Morata is fit. Want Morata long term over Hazard.

You need to keep a wary eye on GW 10, which looks like it is going to be a stinker.

It is true that Coutinho's form is better than Salah - but it is not bad. Alli's however ...

Please look at the four game ticker that I sent you by email. It is now much better than the FFS one.

I'm in serious need of some help here. Dropped from 150k to 850k in the last 2 weeks.

    Elliott-Krul

    Alonso-Davies-Jones-Naughton-Tuanzebe

    Alli-Salah-Ritchie-Gross-Carroll

    Kane-Morata-Firmino

Already used an FT to get Kane at 12.5 before his double price rise. 0.3 itb.

    Thoughts?

Monreal and Sterling for Miki and Kola(need to downgrade Kola) 2FT this week
That would give me the option to get Hazard for Alli(after Bournemouth game)

Jeez what’s going on?! We’ve gone from ‘we can’t have them all’ to ‘who’s left stading’!! Morata and now potentially some doubt on Lukaku. Keeping my free transfer for sure so I can have 2 for GW9. Looks like GW8 may be a lottery especially with players travelling back from abroad too.

Morata has posted on IG he hopes to be fit for palace.
Lukaku will be fine just mourinho and his tricks keeping his players from int duties.

Gw after the int break often is. I think Morata might get a cameo and Aguero won't be fit. The other top strikers should be fine at the moment anyway.

Need some advice lads (and ladesses). I won't make any moves now until after internationals but is it really worth taking another -4 hit to swap out Firmino for Vardy? I'm already on -4 as did Morata>Jesus (I know trigger-happy!). -8 has always felt too much to me....

    Foster, Elliot
    Alonso, Monreal, Bavies, Mbemba, Schindler
    Eriksen, Silva, Ritchie, Carroll, RLC
    Kane, Jesus, Firmino

    £1.1m itb

Am I dreaming to think Bobby F could be the ultimate differential playing a crunch match like MUN, now supported by Coutinho?

Is Vardy really that good a pick that everyone in FPL is tripping over themselves to get him in?

Wildcard evaluation? Have you missed the boat or did I sail too soon!

With many playing there wildcard this international break. I'm interested to know what (if any) advantage you feel you have over those who played theirs (like myself) in the last International break or any who are waiting to play it later?

Despite a lack of immediate £ profit as experiences last year by some early wildcarders; a key component I wished to cover by my decision to wc in GW3, I was able to avoid definite £ drops and more importantly; to create a solid nailed on playing unit as well as optimising against team value with assets that would be now unable to be purchased (TV £105). Tho my season has started poorly by recent campaigns, I'm content that I could have done little more to build a foundation for green arrows with options to cover needful txfrs and strategies.

If I was to be playing my wc now I would be able to cover drops n perhaps join wagons to cover rises but I would be concerned about my 3rd forward Morata, Jesus/Aguero, ?Lak without being forced to compromise the big two and if inj detail emails obscure I foresee real gambles. I see increased gambles with MID Eriksen, Sane, Mane, Coutinho, Mkh, Haz, than GW3 and defensive hitters have increased in £ with no greater cheap options than GW3 so less options and greater impact/limits upon 3rd fwd and Midf #3,4,5.

I've noted the discussions on rotation options but is that the only benefit of a current WC and how does that compare to the benefits I had by my former WC.

Ultimately points will tell the tale (Well some of it!). but for future and the 2nd half wc I'd be interested in your thinking and feelings either as current wc, former wc or future.

I haven't WC'd and won't be this IB - waiting until I feel my team needs a significant overhaul. Been lucky with injuries and price drops (TAA the only player who has dropped and not risen back to original). In fact, with 2FTs might be used to swap around some budget defenders!

That looks like a healthy position to be in. My season lesson would be patience with decent players I have rather than knee jerks. I had 4 players I felt I needed to change in my former WC but I've lost big points TXO players a week before they hit big.
Good luck going forward and thanks for the feedback.

I'm planning on holding out until GW 12, expecting even more injuries by the next international break.

Current WC'er, feeling very good. Only lost 0,2 from my GW1 team on deadwood (Suttner + Fraser). The main reason is the fixture shift, I've had triple United since GW2, now it's time to ditch. I have no City/Chelsea and plan to attack their fixtures aggressively with triple city and 1 or 2 from Chelsea. I think it's worth the risk, I can't see a huge downside. Also some of my players are nearing drops.

Fixtures change is a good point. Triple city. How are you minded to go with that? Mkh-Silva tempts me this GW. Guessing you're already covering Jesus rises until Aguero inj news may be certain. Are you doubling MIDs, FWDs or other?

Sorry for late reply, came back here due to hot topics! I am 100% on Silva and Jesus. Still undecided on whether to go for Otamendi or Sane/Sterling for the third spot. I think they will continue to roll over teams for a while, a little worried of Burnley. I ditched Mkhi for Silva, looks like a good transfer!

The fact that it takes until the middle of your 4th paragraph until you mention anything other than money and TV suggests that you and I have very different ideas about FPL. The wildcard is almost nothing to do with making money in my book; meanwhile I have heard people bragging about TV at this stage of a season before; usually they have gone quiet by March when they realise it means little or nothing.

As for compromising "the big two" forwards, part of wildcarding now is IN ORDER to lose Lukaku. I started the season with 3 United because I rated their early fixtures. From GW8 I will have none.

At the same time, the Aguero injury is a significant change of circumstance. It reduces the option to rotate at City for the next 3 or 4 weeks, maybe until the next international break. It makes Jesus, Sterling and others significantly better picks. A wildcard now enables me to react to that. In addition, it is now apparent that City are sounder defensively this season so I have added Stones (and already got his rise, you'll be happy to know). So, from having had no City I will start GW8 with 3.

Fixtures are turning for other clubs too. My wildcard will enable me to make 9 or 10 changes, some more essential, some just preferences. Foster will become Pope; that's the kind of move I'd never find a FT for but I'm pretty sure it will net me plenty of points.

I play the wildcard when I see it gives the best strategic benefit. I was quite happy to hold it till GW12 (which was my tentative plan) but am glad to have it available to use now. Had I used it in GW3 I'd have had a much less clear idea of the shape of the season. Wildcarding now is something I can do with some foresight and quiet confidence rather than a pin and a bunch of bandwagons. 🙂

He's getting there. He will get 180+ FPL points this season in all likelihood. And you are paying for them. I wouldn't put anyone off him, put it that way.

He won't be in my GW8 wildcard because in the long term I would prefer Morata, who I will wait till GW14 for. Batshuayi, however, MIGHT be in my GW8 team. 🙂

            Hi Ruth
Can you see Batshuayi getting a run of starts if Morata is out for a few weeks - i'm not sure he totally fits with Conte's normal game plan, but maybe he doesn't have many options and will play him

I bought Morata last week and now pondering the options

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 9 Years

Personally I think Morata will be out till GW11/12. Might be earlier but that's what I think most likely. Doubtless there will be more info by the time GW8 arrives.

Batshuayi would be a punt. I think it might be a punt worth taking, haven't decided yet. Chelsea must play 6 games in the 2nd half of October and I'd expect Batsman to start at least 4 of them. Whether they will be the PL games I can't say. But I think it more likely than not.

Incidentally, Chelsea looked toothless with no striker against City. Playing Batshuayi compromises Conte's tactics less than any other option actually. But the Hazard false #9 is clearly also a possibility.

I would love to hear your thoughts regarding 4 next gameweeks (till wildcard in gw12):
                Going 4-3-3 with Otamendi

                Going 3-4-3 with Ritchie?

think I need to see how the IB goes and see who's fit for the next GW

The point about Chelsea being toothless without a striker is a very poignant one, if Conte has picked up on this Bats could be a good punt

Very good post as always from you Ruth. That is very much how I also see the situation and also activated my wildcard. I am little disappointed that I missed the Stones and Ward price rises :-/ Do you think he is a certain starter also if Kompany magically is able to play consecutive matches?

I agree pretty much also with ditching the United players now. However I am tempted to keep Jones on wildcard as I think there is value in him also for United's not so appealing fixtures. I could also get Stones in for Jones in the current draft if I have Mee rather than Ward. Jones would allow getting Alonso but I don't think theres much between Alonso/ Azpi.

No, I don't think any City player (barring Ederson and Fernandinho perhaps) is a certain starter. Most of the time I have a no City policy for that reason. But the current situation, with Kompany and Aguero injured (again) swings the balance in favour of owning City players for me.

Jesus will stay in my team for 4 weeks, no more. After that he will be gone for Lukaku.

I agree about Azpi/Alonso by the way. FPL priced them with the correct price differential in my opinion.

Similar thoughts about Jesus and Lukaku and have to address that when coming into GW12 or so. What is your take on Jones and keeping him on wildcard? Naturally the fixtures would favor switch to City defender but I have some faith in United defence also in those next fixtures. Mourinho's history to approach that kind of matches in more pragmatic way also make me feel he could be one United player to have through that schedule.

Ruth you have pretty much summed up my thoughts on this.

I'm wildcarding now for all those reasons too.

Money is nothing to do with it - its all strategic around fixture swings (partic the Manchester sides) and my cheapies needing a refresh that have driven me. Getting Ward in for Mee for example is a luxury move I'd have never have made otherwise. Sorting one of my goalies out too.

As I recall, one of the main reasons given in GW3 was that it was too early to see form and how the season was panning out - alluded to by Ruth. So for you and others contributing to the topic may I ask.

'How do you see the shape of the season? And how has it significantly differed or has it remained constant from GW3?'

If I tried to answer that in any detail it would be way too long. But in short, it's not whether it has changed since GW3 that matters. It's that I can be clearer and more confident about what I am seeing that matters. Wildcarding now means I'm guessing much less than I would have been 5 weeks ago. 🙂

Thanks for your insights however you couldn't be less correct in your initial conclusion. Perhaps my 4th paragraph presentation is misleading and for record I much appeatiate how this years less volatile market makes that less of a factor in future team strategy.

So unless I'm mistaken, like Kloppster Fixture change would appear to be the significant strategy factor for the wc alongside greater temp selection security (City).

Bold move imo, a nailed on Lukaka to a city rotation risk forward (think I read Aguero being back sooner and Sane looks equally adept up front).
Been burnt by Pepe's rotation (Jesus) and formation (KdeB) from GW1 and hence tend to view city assets on a week to week basis.

How do you see the shape of the season? And how has it differed or remained constant from GW3?

Wish you well with the wc and wIll be interested to see how you select city coverage in light of its abundance and risks - also noting your omission of Silva.

Perhaps you do play FPL differently to me in being more maverick.

I think Ruth's take is just sensible not maverick or dullard.

I'm known as a dullard manager and I'm happy to go without Lukaku and spread the cash into the blue half of Manchester.

          Classic playing of the fixtures.

Pretty much agree with all of this.

On a small side note, do you not think a United defender (Jones most obviously) might still offer value through even this tough run of fixtures? I seem to remember Mourinho's Chelsea sides doing well in terms of clean sheets against big sides and the United defence is very highly owned....

Ruth (I'm also on a WC) - what's your WC strike force right now?

I understand you're losing Lukaku so Kane, Jesus and maybe Bat?

I'm on Lukaku, Jesus and either Laca/Vardy. Would probably go with Haz if I stick with Vardy. Except I always red arrow all over the place when I have Haz.

        1. Ruth_NZ

I have my eyes on Josh King from GW11/12. Will be Kane, Jesus +1 before that. Vardy would be the safer choice, Batshuayi if I decide to take that punt.

Downgrading Bats/Vardy ➡ King in GW11/12 would pay for Jesus ➡ Lukaku at the same time. I will want Lukaku back as captain in GW12 & 13. That's how I'm thinking right now, anyway.

I don't like the 3 premium strikers approach. I think it is a fundamentally flawed structure myself.

Good points, Ruth. I decided to use my WC this week because everything seemed to line up: planned to get rid of Lukaku, was going to move to Morata but injury changed that, wanted some City players, saw a potential to maybe rebuild TV.

For me, the chance for a bump in TV is a potential bonus, not the main focus of why I was wildcarding. I'm trying to set up my team to best take advantage of the change in fixtures.

Honestly, if I'd hit on my opening strategy/punts and were sitting at the top of my ML, I'd probably have saved the WC for GW 12. But instead, I've had to scrape and claw to get to mid-table, and I need the help I hope a fresh WC squad can deliver.

If injuries arise, I can WC but it's a long way to GW19. WC will be needed I think!

This week and GWK 12 look the optimum times to wildcard I think.

        We have lots of information.

We have genuine fixture shifts then

I dropped the WC going into GW4 for main reasons of having several players either not playing, not starting, being rotated or injured. This had a trigger effect of bringing about potential price drops thrown in, as well as a dire rank.

Basically if you make poor decisions from GW1 you can find it very hard to get back on the boat unless you act quickly. Patience does not come into the equation quite as much then - very easy to be patient if all is going relatively well. I'd rather do something early and then take it from there than come from a long way back, before a template of sorts forms.

Outcome 2.7M to 1.1M is OK but still way off where I want to be at this stage.

Yes, a good initial squad plus and bit of patience are as important as a good well-timed wildcard and help to avoid the necessity of having to play that wildcard very early.

I actually played WC in gameweek 3 as I could see I had got it badly wrong and needed to change it fast.

Since then have done ok 167k rank no transfer hits at all to date and TV 102M

Team looks ok - DDG Elliott - Alonso Davies Cedric Hegazi Mee - Salah Mki Rich RLC Carroll - Kane Kaku Chica

Will take my first hit week on Friday probably Chica to Jesus and Mki to cheaper mid probably Fellani.

Looking to go strong up top and at the back and not really wishing I had the WC still in my back pocket.

Have tracked the HOF top ten out of interest this year and so far only 3 have WC left.

I think an early WC can work if you have four or five you really don't want, why wait for their prices to fall and leave you with less cash to spend on replacements. Once you get a core of good players there are not many critical transfers needed each week.

I was intending to hold on until the December chaos to WC, but found myself hitting the button on Saturday due to the mass-injury mess this weekend. I intended to lose my Liverpool and United assets, but the Morata injury has made me retain Lukaku for now. I want three big hitters up top and the only 3 still standing are Kane, Kaku and Jesus! I'll still lose him if I can be sure Batty will fill in for Morata. I've also maxed out on City - Jesus, Silva and Sterling, and fancy Arsenal and Burnley at the back. In fact I'm only definitely keeping 2 of my original squad - and one of those is my reserve keeper!

I played my wildcard in GW5, mainly because I had 2 injured players (Kompany and Pogba) and 3 others who had not started in GW4 (Yoshida, Loftus-Cheek and Willian), but the latter 3 then all started in GW5!

I also took the opportunity to make a number of other supposed improvements, but if I had instead just used a couple of free transfers to replace Pogba with Eriksen in GW5 and Kompany with Kolasinac in GW6, then that team would have beaten my actual post-wildcard team by 3 points in GW5 and only lost by 4 points in GW6 and 10 points in GW7.

There are now quite a few further changes I would like to make to my current team, so I might have been better off by saving my wildcard for GW8 (which had been my original intention) instead of playing it in GW5.

It's always a difficult call. I have taken hits this season (including a -8 in GW3) in order to save the wildcard. Usually I'd have used it by now, I think GW8 is the deepest I have ever gone with it. But my intention this season was to hold it until I could get a strategic advantage if possible. Hopefully that will now pay off.

I'm noting fixture change, big hitter injury issues as current factors for current GW wc action alongside the obvious dead wood removal (and price movement). But fixtures were out at the season beginning so I'm yet yet to be convinced of any further knowledge/experience gleaned since GW3 wc and the risk of limited returns since through Template players raises a significant reason to wc early.

PS and hasn't the Aguero uncertainty and Morata loss dented the appeal of this week for WC and promote a Gw12 wc?

Very true. I was all set to use it this I.B. But the morata situation has changed that. Keeping lukaku now and took first hit -4 to get 2 city in. No Chelsea but I'm not overly concerned. Definitely not the same appeal with Morata out.

Insightful contributions from all - thanks!

Conclusions beyond those I've previously suggested, I remain content with my early WC decision but recognise I could be exposed to disadvantage and loss of points through:

      1. Hits and time to change - if this is the point for significant formation change to 3-4 Big hitting MIDs from a Big hitters up front.
      2. Weaker Rotation options through Fixture Shifts.

Time will tell but good luck to all going forward.
