International Scout Notes – Saturday

Two more premium strikers find the net, only to be eclipsed by a dazzling display from a Manchester City midfielder.

Meanwhile, a Spurs asset – for once – fails to make an impact on the international stage as the Republic of Ireland hold Denmark to a goalless draw in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off.

Here are the notes from Saturday’s internationals.

Forwards front and centre…

Two of Fantasy Premier League’s top five strikers, Romelu Lukaku and Gabriel Jesus, scored for their countries on Friday.

Two more, Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Morata, joined the party last night.

Aguero scored the only goal of the match as Argentina won 1-0 in Russia.

The visitors left it late – 86 minutes to be precise – to seal victory in the friendly, with the City striker withdrawn just a minute later.

The dilemma surrounding the two Man City strikers has vexed many a manager this season, and the latest international break has not made that situation any clearer, with both continuing to show form.

Brazil and Argentina do have another friendly to play on Tuesday – the former at Wembley against England, while Aguero will stay in Russia to face Nigeria – so further evidence might be forthcoming.

But at present, it is Aguero who seems to be winning hearts and minds.

Overall, 23.0% of FPL bosses currently favour him over his cheaper team-mate Jesus (16.0%) and, as Man City prepare for a kindly four-match run (lei hud SOT WHU), close to 70,000 new managers are buying into the Argentine this week, while 47,000+ have sold the Brazilian.

One striker more popular in the lead up to Gameweek 12 than either of them is Morata.

The Chelsea striker has been bought by close to 88,000 following his winning goal against Man United in Gameweek 11, making him the fifth most popular purchase over the break.

The Blues’ schedule – barring a Gameweek 13 trip to Anfield – is set fair for the rest of the year, and Morata’s return to decent domestic form is backed up by his international record – his goal in a 5-0 drubbing of Costa Rica last night was the fourth match in a row he’s found the net in a Spanish shirt.

Fatigue shouldn’t be a factor for Morata either as he was one of four players withdrawn at half-time, although the Spaniards do have another friendly to come, away in Russia, on Tuesday.

…but Silva is the golden boy

The undoubted star of Spain’s five-goal show was Man City’s David Silva.

The midfielder scored twice, set up Morata’s goal and was also heavily involved in the Spaniards’ opener.

Fantasy managers have, however, literally been turning away from the playmaker in recent weeks.

The rush to tap into City’s attacking riches has rendered Silva a fall guy, with a loss of over 230,000 managers over the last two Gameweeks.

That trend is continuing ahead of Gameweek 12, with a further 48,000 selling him on, despite the Spaniard being one of only three City midfielders – along with Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho – to have started every league match this season.

Silva’s relatively unspectacular haul of one goal and seven assists seems to be the key reason for those sales, with the more explosive returns of team-mates Leroy Sane (six goals, five assists) and Raheem Sterling (seven and three) available in the same bracket.

But with rotation such a major factor when selecting Pep Guardiola players, Silva’s slow and steady approach to points accumulation might yet win out.

And his devastating display against Costa Rica was a reminder that Silva may just be developing a stronger goal threat to become a more rounded Fantasy option.

Silva’s compatriots David De Gea and Alberto Moreno remained on the bench for Spain last night, while his City team-mate Nicolas Otamendi, who is suspended for the Gameweek 12 trip to Leicester City, played the full 90 minutes for Argentina.

Man United back-up keeper Sergio Romero also started and finished the win over Russia.

Elsewhere…

Denmark’s 0-0 draw at home to the Republic of Ireland in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off was the seventh time in eight matches in all competitions that Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen has failed to find the net.

His blank last night was particularly frustrating for the playmaker as he had scored in his six previous international run-outs.

Eriksen has produced minimal returns in three consecutive matches for his club since being handed a more withdrawn role by coach Mauricio Pochettino, and his ownership is suffering as the City options turn heads. Just over 60,000 managers have moved him out in the lead-up to Gameweek 12’s north London derby.

He and Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel played the full 90 minutes for the Danes, with Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen an unused sub.

Shane Duffy, Stephen Ward, Harry Arter, Jeff Hendrick, James McClean and Robbie Brady all started for the Irish.

Arter was replaced after 88 minutes and Kendrick in stoppage time.

Southampton forward Shane Long was brought on in the 75th minute, while Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot watched from the bench as the Republic survived on just 28% possession.

The second leg of the play-off takes place on Tuesday.

Elliot’s Newcastle club-mate Chancel Mbemba played the full World Cup qualifying match for Congo DR as they beat Guinea 3-1.

Spurs defender Serge Aurier and Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha started and finished the Ivory Coast’s winner-takes-all World Cup qualifier at home to Morocco.

But it was the visitors who emerged victorious, their 2-0 win securing their place at Russia 2018.

Southampton’s Sofiane Boufal was an unused sub for the North Africans.

Meanwhile, on the injury front, Phil Jones has now returned to Manchester following the recurrence of a thigh problem in England’s 0-0 draw with Germany. The centre-back will reportedly return to United’s training complex for treatment, making him an early doubt for Newcastle United’s visit in Gameweek 12.

Also this morning, there is a report that Eden Hazard was left out of Belgium’s team training session, to train alone ahead of the friendly with Japan on Tuesday. This is yet to be confirmed, and there is no suggestion that an injury is at play. However, we will monitor the news wires for a further update.

Hazard will be a key figure in Antonio Conte’s plans for the visit to West Brom in Gameweek 12 and his omission for Tuesday’s encounter may even be an arrangement with Chelsea.

    The Great Lukaku Divide

Romelu Lukaku is set to be one of the most decisive figures next weekend when he leads the line for Manchester United at home to Newcastle.

Over the last four Gameweeks around half a million FPL managers have ditched the Red Devils striker over his tough run of games that included trips to Chelsea and a home encounter with Spurs.

A meagre 14 point return over that time has shown that they were right to be pessimistic about his chances of success against tougher opposition.

But over the next three the fixtures change. Newcastle and Brighton visit and there’s a trip to Watford.

Given he has a 48% ownership there is almost a perfect split between those who are keeping faith in him to prosper against weaker opposition and those who are happy to look elsewhere up front and for the captaincy.

What side of the Lukaku fence do you sit on?

Are you confident of strong returns over the next three? Is so why?

Or are you happy to avoid him? If so who looks a better captaincy option over the next three?

I’m going Lukaku captain. Looks the best on paper. I’ve been doing ‘the sensible thing’ all season and doing ok so can see no reason to stop now.

Lukaku looks great over the next three. Here’s why.

Lukaku at home to ‘weaker’ sides

      WHU - 13 pts
      LEI – 0pts (missed penalty)
EVE – 12pts (Pogba absent for this game onwards)
      CRY – 6pts

      Lukau away to ‘weaker’ sides

      SWA – 6pts
      STK – 6pts
      SOU – 7pts
      HUD – 5pts

Also as FPL Freddo points out while Brighton and Newcastle have only conceded five and six goals respectively on the road they have also faced mainly weaker opposition.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/11/11/the-watchlist-updated-midfielders-3/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_16926658

In addition Brighton are among the five worst sides for conceding shots on the road.

Per match average against weaker sides.

        Morata has a 8.5
        Lukaku has a 6.9
        Kane 5.4

Aguero 8.33 but dips to 5.55 when factoring in games he was benched and didn’t play in. I think with Aguero you have to factor in him not playing due to rotation.

This is why Im considering switching Lukaku to Morata - or doubling up on Morata from GWK 14.

I haven’t owned Lukaku all season and to be honest I don’t think I will...
He’s just one of those players that I can’t take too.
        We all have em...
A player that you should have but never get for no logical reason at all.
        I just don’t like him.. 🙂

he's a player I often own but don't really enjoy doing so.
Not convinced he's a natural finisher and there's days you don' feel he fancies it. You watch Kane and you feel (even if things are going poorly) he will work hard to turn it round.
Ibra's return will be interesting to see if Lukaku keeps getting the opportunity to get pts in the last 10 minutes as much greater possibility of getting subbed.
That said he will be back for me for next 3 GWs.

I can see Ibra taking loads of time off him..
If he can come in and starts firing straight away he may take Lukakus starting berth..
I still don’t think Mourinho is fully convinced by him.
Doesn’t really contribute to the team as much as Ibra can...

I think stats can only take you so far. My instinct sees that he is struggling to get the goals he used to at Everton, in a defensive Man Utd side. He's not worth the price of 12.5mil, no way. I'd pay 6.5mil to get a defender that will deliver an average points of 6 or 7, but I would not pay 12.5mil.

See above Kane is by far the worst captain for easy games compared to Lukaku and Morata.

Great away but can you safely trust him for those upcoming easy home games.

I'm thinking of just taking the rough with the smooth. Having a nightmare picking captains and overthinking it so far . Kane will score another 20ish goals between now and the rest of the season imo so don't want to be missing them.

There's some forthcoming analysis of the Live Hall of Fame coming out. Captaincy was key - those who took the rough with the smooth with Kane did ok, those who targeted easy games didn't. Lukaku and Aguero were by far the most successful choices.

I don't want Lukaku as of yet because I prefer Kun for his explosiveness but the advantage those who are going for him have is that they have an obvious captaincy pick. I have to decide between Kun, Kane, Salah & Sane for the armband. Would be on Aguero if I could guarantee he would start and play at least 70 mins. My expectations are that Lukaku gets his usual goal in each of these matches but Kun if he plays has the potential to outscore him. Better player, better team and better fixtures as I see Castle and Brighton as being defensively stronger than Huddersfield and Leicester. Will probably risk Aguero for the upside.

But I'm wary of Kane's own explosiveness, another idea going through my head is to just perma-captain Kane in every easy fixture to avoid missing hauls. Arsenal's defence is average and poor vs big teams

I don't currently own Lukaku and while the next 3 games are attractive they are followed by Arsenal away and Man City at home which I don't want him for. After that though there is a decent run of games. As I currently own Kane, Aguero & Morata who all have an even better run of fixtures over the same time period I really don't see the point of spending 2 transfers hopping on and off Lukaku.

    5. Freddo

I'm firmly in the Lukaku camp for the next few, was happy to sell him before a run of games where I expected Jose to do what Jose does, think the time is right to get Lukaku back to do what Lukaku does against the weaker sides.

Can't help thinking that this season's ranks will be defined by when you take on Lukaku's ownership and when you don't, loads have sold and he's still 47/8% owned, a goal and assist is not unreasonable to expect at H to Newcastle and that could still do a lot of damage, he has previous I'm these type of games.

I saw your earlier post and have included a link above re the ease of New and Brighton's opposition on the road so far.

That and Utd's home form and Lukaku's ability to score against minnows also makes me firmly in the Lukaku (c) camp.

Morata looks sensational taking into account similar rationale from GWK 14. I'll either swap then or GWK 15 - when Utd's fixt stiffen.

Form has always followed fixtures with Lukaku and already this season we have seen that.

I think there's a perfect window now to get back on and decide if he's worth it long term, if he don't produce in the next 2 or 3 he's a natural swap to Morata with no looking back.

Kane and Lukaku are still the ones to have IMO and their ownership and security of mins will be massive over this busy period if both are performing.

Interesting 3 gameweeks ahead for sure.

This is a question for me too having dropped him on GW8 wildcard with the plan to get him back in GW12.

For me it's not about Lukaku, so quoting his personal record against various teams kind of misses the point. It's about United and how they will play. Mourinho "let the horses run" in the early season but he certainly hasn't been doing that recently. That may have been fixtures based but good attacking play can't always just be switched on and off at will.

Lukaku's personal form is fine. He has even had a go at some of his team-mates for creating next to nothing in recent games if reports are to be believed. So that's the question that needs answering for me. What United are we going to get?

My thoughts exactly, Ruth. United haven't looked like scoring bags of goals like City. If they were banging them in then i wouldn't hesitate to bring in Lukaku. The fact they aren't and City are on fire is a pretty simple answer for me. Plus, it's Kun.

I just dont like wasting transfers on forwards and going with Luka means I have to take him out after 3 weeks, leads to unnecessary hits in other positions.

Going with 3 premium forwards makes midfield and defense looks ugly, so thats not really an option, atleast for now.

Newcastle and Brighton being poor in air is a plus point for Luka... lets see if his creative department can improve or not

No Lukaku for me. City and Chelsea have kind fixtures over the longer run and prefer have a balanced defence, midfield and attack which means going with two up front. A Morata / Jesus front line is what I am looking at. With City assets in midfield. Liverpool also have a fairly kind run so Salah looks a good shout.

      Salah - Sane - Richarlison - Eriksen - (RLC)
      Jesus - Morata - (McBurnie)

Huddersfield were very good on that day, it was a Cup Final for them, I'm sure Liverpool will have exactly the same problem when they go there.

They are a Northern team who hosted a Northern giant, sometimes it's too easy to overlook the emotion of real football, I'm guessing the United and Liverpool games are the ones that whole club have been looking for.

Lukaku will surely do something in those matches and from history he is known for scoring against lesser sides. But one shouldn´t just look to history to make future choices, and in this case most of the data is from his Everton days and Unite dare playing not in the slightest bit in the hands of lukaku as Everton did. I wrote a piece some days ago where i highlighted the coincidence between the kind of teams Lukaku and United met earlier in season, they were all in shambles either on the pitch or other things and almost all his goals came exclusively within the last quarter of the game when their opponents have gone to pieces. All goals counts equally, i know, but is it sustainable in the long term?

My point is that he could very well score vs Brighton and Newcastle but these are teams are compact and resillient in defense and not surrendering when they ship a goal.

There´s aways a uncertainty about Kuns´s pitch time but i´m pretty confident he will score vs Leicester and Huddersfield away and thus it makes it impossible for me to include Lukaku imt and i will captain Kun as it stands now.

I've no doubt he will get returns and he looks best captain pick, but if I got in whoever looked the best captain pick every time they had a few strong fixtures, I'd be switching big money strikers every 2 weeks. Probably be taking -4's galore to accommodate that and other more urgent transfers too. And that would take away the gains.

Lukaku should score points and will be highly owned, but then, I have Kane and Morata and am in no rush to sell them. I'm sure they can score too and I have more urgent transfers than selling them.

Sacrificing MCI cover to get Kaku, Sterling & Jesus > Ramsey & Kaku 2ft

Business end of the season now, need assurance minutes and protection v Kaku ownership which will define all our ORs come May

Plus, I like Lukaku in these games.
      Kane-Lukaku-Morata ftw

Got bigger fires to fight, so will go without for now. Will get him if Pogba comes back and they start performing. City and Liverpool are doing teams in 3 or 4 goals at a time, Man U aren't.

Going without. I have Kane and Morata, and want to keep both. Will likely captain one of them. I'm hoping that Newcastle and Brighton will make it difficult for United without their usual attacking confidence. Mkhi looks completely off at the moment, Pogba might change things a little. As someone else said, I'm not sure it's as easy as "turning it on" against the smaller sides at will.

Another factor is that another blank will trigger huge sales again. If he blanks v Newcastle a 0,2 drop looks likely.

I would like to have Lukaku but I wont.

Already used my FT to get rid of Cedric as I thought he was abt to drop in price, and need a -8 to get rid of Vardy for Lukaku. Not gonna do it.

My mind is set on Kane captain anyway and I can ser Vardy score vs City, if just one goal. Nth worth a -8 as I see it. But will be a bit worried without Kaku I must admit.

Took lukaku out 2 gws ago for his tough run while on a WC. (Had him since gw1). Had pencilled in his return for this gw and will stick to my plan. Basically swapped him for sanchez for 2 gws. Avoided lukakus dip but didnt gain on sanchez who i also captained vs swans and got jack for.
I believe he is still by far the best single player with whom United pts can be tapped into.
Soft opposition over the next 3gws along with rotation risk for aguero and unpredictability of Kane make lukaku best captaincy choice as well next Gw.
Will even take a hit to make the move as i need to swap Quaner to RLC as well as sanchez to lukaku. But all part of the initial plan.
Intend to hold onto lukaku kun kane for as long as possible. Cover kop with Salah and chelsea with hazard. Done with the arsenal/sanchez experiment

I really want him in my team but for me it's going to depend on the injuries to Sterling and Jones and whether I have excess/shortage of funds for their replacements if necessary. Accordingly, I can do Kane or Morata to Lukaku.

      For now I'm looking at Morata/Sterling/Jones > Lukaku/Gross/Maguire (-8)

Lukaku is my Captain for the next three game weeks, unless he blanks on Saturday or gets injured. His record against the weaker teams is good and with two out of three fixtures at home I expect at least two double digit hauls. I’m also expecting the return of his LA party buddy, Paul Pogba

want Lukaku for these next 3 GWs. Both him and United should be looking to prove themselves.
Only catch is that without taking a hit, I can only transfer out Kane for him.

No Lukaku for me either. Dumped him on the wc in week 8 and not regretted it one bit.

Since then, it looks like Utd have lost that attacking mindset and gone backwards.

It is also reassuring that I feel little sense of fear by going without. Just not worth the money. Captain Kane each week and be done with it.

Lukaku has convinced me that he will score consistently; I had him for my first 8 weeks in the game...

And he convinced me he will never be explosive. Especially not against Newcastle and Brighton...

As I have Kane and Agüero, I need him not.

I think Lukaku is for (a) those who cannot or will not afford Kane or (b) those who do not favour Agüero over Lukaku.

      A matter of simply strategy...

If you favour either Kane or Agüero, you need not bother over Lukaku...

I was all set to bring Morata in this game week and side step Lukaku, however, he has now scored 2 over the internationals, Pogba is back, Mourinho will be switching tactics and going all out for a win against Newcastle, Lukaku has a great record against 'smaller teams', his ownership remains high and my mini league leader who I'm chasing by 20 points has him ! I therefore think it might be prudent to get him on board for a couple of weeks and give him the arm band before dumping him for Morata. I just need to decide on an Eriksen replacement in the 7 million price bracket to enable the move.

I have Lukaku Kane and Jesus for next 2. Likely to captn Lukaku against Newcastle. I will then bring in Morata and Aguero for Jesus and Lukaku in gw 14 when the matches turn again. For me it is about getting 3 big strikers in against the weaker teams then rotating 1 or 2 depending on fixtures.

I haven't owned him all season and did consider getting him in now for Firmino but this would leave the coffers dry. Bit of a problem as a Davies, Suttner and Long owner...Some weeks I'm only getting ten out which is no good.

So I'm going Morata after the Liverpool/Chelsea match for the Swansea game, then I can upgrade to Vertonghen, Duffy and Mee at the back.

I kept him through the tough patch, not because I like him, was on my shortlist of transfers out every week but there was always something else to deal with or too much uncertainty on who to bring in (Kun injury, decline of Jesus, Morata injury / loss of form).

Now with these fixtures I am happy to have him for next 2/3 and will captain this week. But from week 14 Lukaku -> Morata will be back on my transfer shortlist and I will be happy to sell.

My advice is keep this week and potentially captain if you have him but I would not be selling Kane, Morata or Kun to get him. Might consider Jesus or other sub 10m striker -> Lukaku if I had the cash and intended to captain him.

    Latest WC - thoughts? I'd be rotating the defence & RLC in a 4-3-3 / 3-4-3.

    Pope, Speroni
    Daniels, Dann, Mee, Moreno, Lowton
    Salah, Sterling, Richarlison, RLC*, 4.5*
    Aguero*, Kane, Lukaku

    * could be Zaha, Sane & Niasse, but the value in the back 5 and an Aguero(c) option has me currently settled on the above.

I'd rarely be starting RLC though, so it's more like:

            A) Aguero & a rotating 4th defender
            vs.
            B) Zaha & Sane

Both pretty nailed but Clyne is a factor long term while Moreno looks more nailed at left back. I picked Moreno without hesitation and didn´t even consider Gomez. Gomez is more exciting if he nails down a cb position but as it stands now Klopp doesnt seem to thrust him there. Long term he is way better than both Lovren and klavan, he is strong, athletic and relatively fast to be a cb and while he isn´t the biggest cb he is dominant as we seen vs some big guys in the league. Done some mistakes but most of them are faults that can be learned with age and routine. I would say he is composed in posession, not a great passer or anything but safe and sound.

More confident in my 3rd striker to do well over next few weeks than Kane and Morata/Luka 😆

Hi. Excuse the massive geekery - has anyone tried out the new football manager 2018?

Might dip in on the mobile version tonight. Want to take over an ambitious club in any English league.

Any advice who to start with? Thanks

Or West Brom. I assume they will both be similar on the ambition scale.

Could be fun, Richarlison, Dacoure... Perfect club to get in those young players that make the game fun too and watch them improve and their value soar too. That's the type of thing I enjoy doing when playing fm, not sure about your style but seems a good choice if you're into things like that.

        It's the ipad mobile version.

Don't have a look of time on my hands - so it's the basic of the 3 versions...and need a squad im kinda familiar with

Watford could be fun as klopp says...the amount t of time I have wasted on this game in the last 25years is just insane....

Then You have last season to. Game after game he kept playing, getting points. Could be good. And at 7.9 is cheap.

Hey guys... A challenge to you! Just a bit of fun came up with in my hungover state this morning...

Create the best possible FPL starting 11 with your favourite players from any season using only one letter from the alphabet. In my case I picked 'R' and based my team around Ronaldo. The letter has to be the surname. Pick ANY letter and try and beat this team:

    Reina
    Rose Riise M.Richards
    Robben Reyes Ramsey Rosicky
    Ronaldo Rooney Robinho

      • 8 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

"C" to base my team around the one and only Andy Carroll

      3-5-2

      Cudicini
      Cameron Coleman Cedric
      Choupo-Moting Coquelin Carrick Colback Cazorla
      Carroll Crouch

Sacrificing MCI cover to get Kaku, Sterling & Jesus > Ramsey & Kaku 2ft

Business end of the season now, need assurance minutes and protection v Kaku ownership which will define all our ORs come May

Plus, I like Lukaku in these games.
    Kane-Lukaku-Morata ftw
