Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Toils Again

Another underwhelming week for Spurs and their talismanic striker sows further seeds of doubt in the minds of Fantasy managers.

Our confused relationship with Harry Kane continues.

Today’s two-point display in the 1-1 draw at Watford followed back-to-back goals, which sounds reasonable enough.

But three blanks in the past five Gameweeks doesn’t cut the mustard when, at 12.8, you’re the most expensive player in Fantasy Premier League.

Some 59,740 managers paid the premium price to bring the striker in for Gameweek 15, while 857,000+ (15.9%) made him the weekend’s most-captained player.

All that hope came to nought as Kane managed just two shots – both from range, one a free kick – and a meagre two touches in the box.

It was left to Son Heung-min, assisted by Christian Eriksen, to spare Spurs’ blushes after Christian Kabasele had opened the scoring for the hosts from Tom Cleverley’s corner.

Returns for Mohamed Salah (5), Alvaro Morata (8) and, in particular, Eden Hazard’s 15-point haul will again call into question the merits of the Kane captaincy – even with Stoke City at Wembley next.

Spurs’ form is the major concern. They’ve hit just four goals – only Huddersfield and Swansea City have managed fewer – and earned a mere five points in the last six Gameweeks now.

Kane does have two of those goals, but the confidence seems to be leeching from Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

They’ve even lost the knack of making up for their deficiences at Wembley with results on the road – today’s draw was the first points they’ve earned away since Gameweek 7.

Kane is now experiencing sales, only Leroy Sane is suffering more, with owners either doing rage transfers or feeling that his 19 points from the last five Gameweeks is scant reward for that price tag.

The problem for some is that there remains no clear or in-form replacement, aside perhaps from Morata.

Romelu Lukaku now has just one goal from his last eight starts, while Man City’s stellar options are blighted by Pep Guardiola’s continued appetite for rotation.

The Kane to Morata move is the second most popular transfer taking place this evening. Interestingly, Roberto Firmino is the next most popular Kane replacement, as managers look to clear funds for midfield investment.

Spurs defence stretched

Spurs’ attack is stalling, their defence close to crisis.

Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier returned at full-back and, with the Champions League to come in midweek, they will likely feature at home to Stoke next Saturday.

But starts are simply not enough in a backline that’s kept one clean sheet in six matches.

And a red card for Davinson Sanchez – he’ll now miss the home fixtures with Stoke and Brighton and the massive trip to Man City – was the last thing a creaky defence needed while Toby Alderweireld remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Eric Dier will have to move back into the defence to cover for that, but it could get worse still – Jan Vertonghen picked up a yellow card at Vicarage Road and is now just one more caution away from suspension.

Richarlison stalls

Another player to see yellow was Watford’s Richarlison – his third of the season – which meant just a single point for the popular Brazilian.

He’s now delivered just an assist from the last three Gameweeks for his 20.4% ownership, although the underlying stats suggest no need to panic.

He’s actually had more penalty area touches than any other midfielder over that spell (25), as well as seven shots in the box.

Even so, there are cheaper in-form options in Pascal Gross (6.0) and Xherdan Shaqiri (6.1) than the 6.6-priced winger, who is suffering some sales, having steadily increased in ownership since Gameweek 7, as a result.

Elsewhere for Watford, centre-back Kabesele’s goal was his second in five Gameweeks, underlining his increased threat from set-pieces, despite delivering those goals from just four shots.

This. The love for Kane and the dislike for De Gea baffles me. 'Kane can haul'. Yes, well so can Salah, Sane, Hazard, Jesus, Aguero, Morata (4 goals earlier in the season?) etc.

Only thing that's been holding his price up. Owners need to monitor this carefully cos once Mark announces he's selling, the price will tumble.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Lessons learned from Gameweek 15 so far

The bargain hunting at Everton begins.

Everton already look set to be a fine source of budget players with Big Sam in charge.

Their win and importantly clean sheet yesterday underlines the potential and value for Pickford in particular. And while question marks remain over which defenders will be favoured the likes of JonJoe Kenny look like potentially offering excellent value.

Big Sam has revealed he is looking to target full backs in January. But his comments prior to yesterday suggests Kenny will get gametime while Coleman is out and Martina is an able deputy for Baines.

    http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sam-allardyce-reveals-hes-targeting-13983880

Up front we spoke on the Scoutcast this week about why Calvert Lewin may be favoured over Niasse due to his superior aerial threat. This certainly looked the case. Calvert Lewin owners can feel rightly happy, Niasse owners less so.

Members can see how Calvert Lewin compares to others regarding headed goal attempts here. Sort by aerial duels and headed goal attempts for the season. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/5423/

Don’t be slow when players are in form.

Hazard’s form, confidence and importantly Fantasy potential makes him a key player to own. Those that dilly dallied and failed to get him in this weekend have paid the price. Those that captained him were especially rewarded.

When a player has form and fixtures, to drag your heels in getting them in can be costly.

Arguably the same may also apply now to Coutinho, who has the form and fixtures and is a good price. Could those who break the template and opt for a Liverpool midfield double up with Salah also be the ones to prosper?

    Kane and unable

Another week, another blank for Kane. That’s eight out of his 14 starts with no returns.

Those who have kept faith in the Spurs man with the armband will surely now be looking elsewhere.

Owners are also starting to consider selling and dreaming of how to spend his hefty price tag.

Two weeks on the trot I’ve just sat on my hands and remained patient with Alli.

Two blanks later, the players I was eyeing up (Mané and Coutinho) get hauls.

I have learnt to be more aggressive with transfers, even if for a hit.

The same moves as me. Since my team value is low, as well as my overall rank, I feel I need to do transfers early to increase my team value. But I did the two for a hit.

In addition I got a Coutinho in for Sané, anticipating a £0.2 swing. That means I start next gameweek with 8 points to catch up. But I feel this is make it or break it point.

Rotation isn't an issue - all the top players will be rotated. Play for the long-term. For example, Hazard rested midweek and hauled yesterday.

Never thought I'd say this, but actually considering Kane to Lacazette. He seems a steady Eddie, albeit a less explosive option, for an Arsenal side that looks quite good offensively.

Especially when those 2m will allow a midfield of Hazard, Salah, Coutinho, Richarlison...

Liverpool double up on the cards. Looking to bring in Coutinho to partner Mo Salah.

Successful Hazard Captain, on the second try this week. Managers ought to get him in seeing as they have great fixtures for several GWs.

Kane is expendable, up until he improves his form. So I'm looking to move him on and beef up my midfield, adding Ramsey possibly.

I'm looking at getting DCL in for Murray soon. Luckily non owners have some time as Everton have a tricky Merseyside derby up next.

Be a good chance as well to see if DCL really has nailed down that starting role.

I usually can't wake up early enough on Saturday so I make all my moves, starting 11 and captaincy picks on Friday. And I did the same this Friday. BUT...

I woke up too early yesterday. I changed captain from Hazard to Kane. I swapped Kenny with Ward, leaving Everton youngster on the bench.

Lesson learned - sleep tight on Saturday mornings for the rest of the season, please. Saturday morning is madness.

learnt that when Arsenal don't mess about trying to be too clever (& sticking to some sort football philosophy) they should be battering sides.
Playing at that pace they could be battering sides - almost like an old Keegan Newcastle team.
Maybe every side should be given a 2 goal start against Arsenal to make them play a bit.

Moving DCL to Niasse before the ban in GW13 for a hit has been one of my worst moves.

At 12.8 another blank by (K)ane is just not good enough. He is costing me week in week out and actually blinkers you regarding the captaincy decision. He has to go.

The only key lesson is that you have to get the captain right.

Had Coutinho been the bandwagon last week and everyone captained him, knee jerky articles proclaiming Hazard as essential wouldn't be published with Coutinho being the essential one much like Salah was 7 days ago and Kane may be in 7 days time.

I've learned to not be scared when your captain blanks to leave the armband on him. Last GW took Romeu out for Hazard(C) and of course Romeu scores and Hazard's cameo role returned 2 points. Left the armband on him this GW and was thankfully rewarded.

If you have a non-template squad then be prepared to have a rollercoaster season - big green arrow one game-week, big red one the next.

The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley - Pogba red card, Mustafi early injury, Callum Wilson & Niasse benched.

Hazard is in great form, and so are other midfielders. Haz is more expensive than the others, but it may be hide-behind-the-sofa time if you don't have him.

Kane, Morata and Aguero are the only premium forwards worth considering, but midfielders offer better value - Kane is not quite justifying his high price, Morata is on 4 yellow cards and Aguero has some tough fixtures coming up.

The Palace and Everton defences have improved under their new management.

If the bug guns for Spurs are rested mid week in the CL then I suspect they will return to form. Every other top 6 team is rotating players. Give them a rest Poch!

FPL at it again, rigging the game behind the scenes.
The highest scoring player Salah was well over 100 and yet didn't increase in price last night.

He wasn't well over 100 by any official measure. Whatever table you're looking at is based on estimates.

All those in their 100s last night increased in price. Except for Salah.

Price prediction has largely been accurate this season.

Yeah, if you were the only person playing FPL that got to change things up, you might have a better rank. Where would you be ranked if everyone else also got to change things?

Guess that depends on how their captain - Vc ratio is going. It's fairly normal for a C to outscore a vc over the course of a season, or large sample...e.g. My captain choice last season beat my vc 605-450(doubled)

To go from a ratio of 3/2 > 1/2 is a pretty major shift, and more to or less sums up my season

Nah, I wouldn’t say that’s sideways. Crouch gets rested far more which leaves him in better shape than Kane. A good bench player like Loftus-Cheek might very well outscore Kane in the games Crouch is rested, so I think you’d be better off.

Is it time to go spursless?

Defense is definitely poor without alder , so thats way out for verto.

In attack Kane is definitely not worth the money. But the big question is do we have a like to like replacement? Maybe aguero? Or do we go big in midfield by bringing sanchez in

    1. Differentiator

Thing is, Kane has actually looked alright over last few weeks. Maybe not in shots, but overall play still class. Which suggests that when Spurs get their act together, he'll start banging them in

To sell now feels like selling at the trough. Not sure Spurs can get much worse and they can certainly get better.

After a nightmare week (all out for less than 40) have done Alli -> Cout and Choupo-Moting -> Stephens 4.5.

Sensible moves? Concluded after staring for a while that there's no point fielding a mid in the 4.8-6.0m range. Not convinced by Gross at all and rest are just trash/form players. Will field RLC every so often and then look to play 4 at the back more regularly (think they have a much better shot at getting 6 pts consistently).

Brighton 4.5m centre mid. Extremely boring, never does anything, but a guaranteed 2 points off the bench if I need him

Well, if Sané or Pogba break a leg, that wouldn’t make those transfers any worse. And Shaq will probably make it through those CL games. But let’s hope nothing happens to Hazard (just brought him in for a hit)!

Currently Kane is the 4th highest points scorer and second highest goal scorer - if that is not performing then I will take it all day 🙂

Costs too much. Why does no one have KDB but everyone have Kane?

          Nope no fear at all.

KdB is a good asset but so are many other City players ... so it is better to go for the 8 mill City options imho

Kane is the main out let for Spurs ... as simple as that

    2. Differentiator
      • 8 Years

It's not the same at all. Kane actually plays 90 mins and its his team which isn't performing rather than a role change. If you ask me "will Kane get 20-25 goals by the end of the season", I'd still say Yes.

Second this. Elliot to Pope (£0.5 difference?) funded by Zaha to Young? I know Young is listed as a midfielder, playing as a wing back, but he still gets more forward than many midfielders. Shaqiri might be a good alternative.

Hate to say it but doubtful Bournemouth will keep a clean sheet, thankfully Daniels will score a goal.

I need Jesus and Kun to accidentally collide in warmup and break each other's legs. Sane ideally doesn't start but if he does he needs to haul more than 12 points.

    That is all.
