Dugout Discussion – Everton vs Swansea City

The curtain falls on Gameweek 18 under the lights of Goodison Park, as a rejuvenated Everton take on an ailing Swansea City.

In Fantasy terms, the focus is quite definitely on the home side and, in particular, their two strikers.

Against the odds, Wayne Rooney is currently revived as a Fantasy option. Perhaps benefitting from the malaise suffered by the premium-priced forward options, Rooney’s 7.5 price tag has attracted over 271,000 new owners ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

Rooney goes into tonight’s contest on the back of five goals and an assist from his last four Gameweeks – all from a No 10 role behind lone striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 20-year-old is also a factor in tonight’s match. Backed by over 80,000 new owners and now in 560,000 squads, Calvert-Lewin will bid to further his CV as our third striker “enabler”. He boasts three assists and a goal from his last five Gameweek starts.

But with three clean sheets from their last four Gameweeks, the Toffees defence also demands attention.

In particular, both goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and right-back Jonjoe Kenny will be auditioning for further transfer attention tonight. They were signed by 21,000+ and 62000+ ahead of Swansea’s visit in anticipation of yet another shut-out.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Gives funds for either Rich to Pog (4-4-2) or RLC to Lingard (3-5-2)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Jay’s key tips

Very enjoyable Scoutcast last night. Great insight from Hall of Fame number one Jay.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c_e4PqX6c8

Thought it would be good to open up a discussion on some of the key points he made and how such advice may be able to help us over the festive schedule.

Here’s a couple to get the discussion started

“Really watch matches and go scouting” – His advice was not only to watch matches but do it with a plan and focus on a particular player. Basically be like an old school fantasy football scout. Look at what the player does in the game and what Fantasy potential it can bring. After watching Kevin De Bruyne play earlier in the season he decided to keep the Belgian in his side when many others were ditching. He was rewarded with the City man’s first haul of the season. Similarly watching Alonso first hand he saw the reality of what he is – a wing back who thinks he’s a striker.

Do the maths - A lot of what Jay was saying related to how many points a player could get and estimating what returns alternative players and strategies can get. Sounds simple but few apply it to the extent he does, especially to take huge hits or ditching potentially explosive players. This helped ensure he felt confident enough to take a -12 hit and remove Kane by estimating that his new festive team would not only earn that back but cover any potential haul the Spurs man may earn, even during the forthcoming double Gameweek. He has already halved his rank and is now on the edge of the top 100 from this move within just a week.

"He has already halved his rank and is now on the edge of the top 100 from this move within just a week"
Makes it sound like he's profiting from the move when in fact he's losing out so far

He's halved his rank compared with GW17, but he's doubled his rank compared to GW16.

So it's a short term failure, but it remains to be seen whether or not it's a longer term success.
Knowing Jay's past record, it probably will be.

No, the examples he talked about were matches he'd attended. In fact, one example is where he said he was watching KDB "not the ball" - you can't really do that properly on TV

Sure you can. I scout people like that on the telly. Kdb is usually on screen when city are in attacking third. What players do off the ball can tell you a lot

TBF it was the players he already had who made up the points for him this week, the new festive players he brought in (De Gea, Silva, Bony and Richarlison) didn't produce for him and two may be issues so the moves in isolation didnt really help him or show he was right to dump Kane.

Fantastic effort though, big balls and that's why he's numero uno.

One thing he has done, he'll inspire people to go hit crazy this week, now might be a good time to take one if you planned it as loads will follow his path.

Hasn't actually paid off yet so it remains to be seen. His big score was from players he already had. It's a calculated gamble but there is plenty of time to recover if it back fires so I think it was worth having a go

point was it's cost him less than a point per GW until the end of the season. Just DDG should outperform Pope easily by that particularly as Heaton may return (who is more expensive than Pope anyway).

point is DDG's fixtures mean he will likely score a lot more points than Pope even while Pope remains an option.
So if DDG outscores Pope by 12-15pts over next fixture chunk then DDG is better value.
It's still a transfer that has to be made at sometime so why not make it early and take the points.

DDG has not been outperforming Pope since Heaton's injury.
They both have the same ppg for the season.
And Pope has been playing so well that it may not be a foregone conclusion that Heaton will take his place when fit.
Meanwhile the difference in price can be spent elsewhere.

It may be a simple game, but that doesn't prevent players like Jay and Ville Ronka from consistently performing considerably better than the vast majority of us, so he must have something extra that the rest of us don't.

There may be a few simple ideas that will help the rest of us to improve, but that won't result in us all reaching his standard.

His key point seems to be (from last night and another podcast I heard) is make a plan - your plan not anybody else's. Then check the pros & cons then make your own decision.
Interesting when he challenged others last night to defend their plans. Wonder whether Andy is having 2nd thoughts this morning on his strategy.
My plan this week. Do nothing and watch lots of people do big hits trying to copy Jay. 🙂 we're going to see some big hits on this site this week.

simple answer is how much you want to put into.
Jay's method is based primarily on research - not necessarily stats.
Read match reports, watch what football you can (match of the day always a good starting point). Stats can take you only so far but can back up what plans you formulate. You are a member here - there's a wealth of data available.
My starting point is what fixtures are coming up. Look at the easier fixtures, identify what the teams in them do well (attack, defend or both) then which players are the best value for that. Always good articles on here (frisking the fixtures) which provide a good starting point.

For periods of the game he would play deep, but not always. But I agree that it was when Mendy became injured and Sterling and Sané became nailed that Pep tweaked things.

Tbf, KdB still drops deep. He gets everywhere on the pitch.

The 1st couple of games weren't enough of a sample to justify that claim.

Against Brighton, they were trying to break down a 10-man defence. He created a couple of ridiculous scoring chances which should have been put away by Kun. Against Everton, they were chasing the game, a man down. In such cases, it has to be the best player who drops deep and dictates play.

Apart from that, he's always all over the pitch and can get you points out of nowhere. I held him from the start and eventually ditched him before the Stoke game after reading all the defensive mid BS about him. Regret doing that.

I did this same notice for Alonso he didn't deliver at all but he was playing as a winger. I bought him with 7.1 and he has not delivered a lot until last 2 GW's. He is on free kicks. Also getting headers from corners and plays as a winger with lot's of touches in the box. He is a season keeper for sure if Conte continue using this same formation.

Exactly this sort of thing. You only need to watch the way Chelsea play to realise his shots and crossing stats are sustainable and will provide returns eventually.

It's when Chelsea give up the odd goal that your patience is tested as that his bread and butter, but attacking returns are always likely.

It seems like people over-simplifying his point. His big advice is not to 'watch football'. His advice is to really watch with a critical eye and scout your intended targets. Learn what gives the future FPL potential rather than being guided purely by goals, assists, CS and a couple of other stats. Alonso was a great example - a lot of managers were quick to dismiss him because he wasn't getting attacking returns. But simply scoring a goal is not the only way to be 'attacking'. Jay said he watched Alonso closely and decided his potential was too great to ignore. At the end of the day Alonso is an ordinary defender who wants to be a striker, that's how he plays, but it takes conviction to let him have blanks, and if you never watch him play you will lose that conviction quickly.

I took the tip to be to trust the eye test more than people do.

Yes I'm not trying to oversimplify. I'd have thought what you just said was common sense for how to play the game. Apparently not

        Agree.

I'm a football and FF fan so I do a lot of both: watching football and checking stats. There's two things that stats struggle to show; a player's movement without the ball when their team is in possession, and for want of another term, purple patches.

Yes, we have heat.maps but that is based on touches of the ball. Watching a game and you see those players that are inches away from being on the end of a cross, or who make the runs but the pass is poor or never arrives. These situations give you the confidence to stick with a player (or bring them in).

Rooney is clearly on a purple patch right now. Yes, he plays deeper, yes he doesn't have many touches ITB, and yes, some of his passes go astray. But everything is conspiring for him to be the centre of it all. As FPL managers we shouldn't turn up our noses at players who don't excel statistically (Yaya, Dacoure, etc.)

Totally agree with all of that. Surprisingly I think a lot of people actually don't bother or see the value in this approach. You can tell from what people say about a player. What you've described helped me bring in Sterling ages ago. I couldn't have cared less for a RMT or 2 people's random advice ... I just watched Sterling and couldn't believe how often he was lurking around the goal looking for chances. He's basically a striker and you don't need any stats to tell you this, you just watch him play. Easiest transfer I've made this season once I took the time to analyse his entire game.

Yes, funny that you mention Sterling. There's been a lot of banter on our WhatsApp group about him. Similar to Alonso, I guess: it doesn't matter how (technically?) poor you think a player is so long as they're doing the main things that their manager asks of them. Pep clearly sees Sterling as a second striker type role and in this City team that's gold dust!

Rooney does excel statistically, his stats are great from a clinical perspective, he picks his shots and is converting a high number. Kane is just having a go every time he gets the ball, whether there's any real chance it will go in or not so statistically he looks great for goal attempts, shots on target etc, but they're just not real chances

I guess goal conversion rate is a measure of purple patches. A high rate is unsustainable.

Sometimes the stars just seem to align and a player does well. This has always been the case with Rooney who has hot and cold periods.

Goal conversion rate can also be a sign of a clinical striker.

One of the biggest differences between the big six teams and the rest is their superior conversion rates (goals scored divided by number of shots).

The Dump Kane for Christmas idea has more traction if there were obvious big hitter replacements. But not many big hitter strikers are that hot.

I've dumped Kane in the Sky game, but you can switch to 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 as it's not a squad game.

Looking behind the stats works also the opposite way. I am too lazy to go and check the stats from the beginning of the season but I put it in shortly. In first 6-7 GW ManU scored 4 goals against SWA, EVE, WHU but many of the goals were scored after 80mins in the clock. I saw those games and ManU were not that dominant what the score line told. e.g Martial, Lukaku and Pogba scored a lot of points after 80mins played. Still they were not that good. It really doesn't matter what gametime you get the points it is just if you want to bring those players in. You need to asses how good they really are.

Same with Kane. His first four goals in the league included 1 total fluke against Everton supposed to be a cross. 2 goals against WHU after WHU made total errors in midfield with the ball. Against HUD Kane really made some nice goals but before that he was not in form imo.

-Plug the leaks. By that I mean eliminating the rank killers (like DDG , Salah and Otamendi) in my case. I had a terrific start to my season and was inside the 15k by GW11. Since GW 13 things haven't worked out well even though I had a very good team and I moved on most good bandwagons fairly early because I didn't have Utd cover (after Jones got injured) and Otamendi and I was stubborn with Salah (even though I am Egyptain 🙂 ). No matter how good my differentials worked, Salah, super DDG and goal crazy Otamendi destroyed my rank. I finally got Salah in GW 13 and sold Kane this week to fund Ota and DDG in.

-Do not captain Kane even if he hauls in one game until Spurs have a great run of form. Kane flattered to deceive every now and then only to blank yet again. Salah, KDB and Hazard and much better captains.

The advice is simple yet distinct, yes watch football but do it in a certain way. I like his approach, and to some extent many of us do this already but maybe not as a structural device/tool to become better fantasy players? But as i have watched several Spurs matches, where does Kane stands in all this? He IS getting in the right positions, his stats are there, the way they play puts him in fine positions? Could there be a case of not looking at the tam as a whole perpective? While looking at one player in isolation could rob us from seeing the team as a whole, not just how they play but also in terms of confidence level and other thing?

For instance, i would much rather have Sterling than Sané even if he is a questinable finisher because when you look at how City play he is always in the mix of getting something, while Sané now for a while have been stationed more like a traditional winger and although he does get in the box and shoots sporadically it just doesnt seem to the same threat there, or to say it more direct; While Sterling plays in a position he only needs to tap the ball in or atumble it in you have a feeling Sané must create those for himself which is far more difficult and statistically fare more seldom happens.

      I enjoyed this Scoutcast-)

I also liked Jonty's very simple equation of points per million. .e.g if a player costs 6M you should be happy with 5+ points, like a 10M player getting you 9+ points.

I've heard it before but its worth remembering because especially this season the erratic nature has made us lose sight of what's a bad/good return.

I prefer VORP - value over replacement player.
Points per million is a bit misleading, especially when comparing players in different positions, or if you look at the total price rather than at the additional price compared to the minimum that you have to pay for that position.
No-one gets 9+ points every week.
But if you have 4M in the bank are considering whether or not to upgrade your 6M player averaging 5 points per match to a 10M player averaging 8 points per match, then what matters is whether that 4M could be spent more profitably. If it couldn't then the upgrade is a good one.

Must be the cheapest front 3 I've seen out in a while.

      Great milfs.

Strikers are in form and no other big hitter is producing point returns consistently so what the point having them??

Looking for a cheap defender to fill out my defence. Prefer a cheapie but can afford up to 5.9mil. playing 4 at the back.

    Alonso, Otamendi, Jones, Masuaku, ________

    Thoughts? Thinking Schindler or Dunk.

I am pretty sure it was a small oversight on your part that you forgot the BUR d.

I could really do with some help

I have Alonso, otamendi, richarlison, KDB, hazard, morata, Kane and then I have gross

I don't have any money in the bank to upgrade gross and I'm pretty attached to all the other players so I don't want to downgrade. If there was a viable cheaper option to gross I'd go there.

    Does anyone have any advice?

I don't see the point of KGB when you can have Sterling et all for 2 mill less.
