Window Watch – Rafael Van Der Vaart to Spurs
Almost a full day after the transfer window slammed – or creeked rather slowly and disappointingly – shut, the biggest transfer of deadline day was ratified and Rafael Van Der Vaart has been announced as a Tottenham Hotspur player after signing from Real Madrid for a fee believed to be just 11 million euro’s.
After the glamour of players like Franco Di Santo and Tom Cleverley moving to Wigan, and Paul Konchesky finally moving to Liverpool, we got a “Galactico” to close out the summer spending, or at least an ex-Galactico.

Roberto Martinez completed his deadline day business by snapping up the rangy Argentinian Franco Di Santo from Chelsea on a three-year deal. The 21-year old has arrives to boost Wigan’s attacking options joining Tom Cleverley, yesterday’s loan signing from United, in the Wigan squad.
This looks to be a smart bit of business from Martinez. The fee involved is undisclosed but in Di Santo Wigan have themselves a 6ft 3ins target man with decent touch and awareness, blooded amongst the array of talent at Stamford Bridge.
Martinez was quick to point out the potential of his new striker on completing the deal…

Stoke City emerged as the busiest Premier League club on transfer deadline day by completing the loan signings of Eidur Gudjohnsen, Jermaine Pennant and striking a deal for Portsmouth skipper Marc Wilson. His transfer involved a reported fee of £4 million with both Dave Kitson and Liam Lawrence moving in the opposite direction.
From a Fantasy perspective all three signings will be expected to make an impact. Although it will be presumed that Wilson will provide competition for Ryan Shawcross and Abdoulaye Faye in central defence – making all three that little less attractive as Fantasy propositions as a result, Stoke boss Tony Pulis appears to have other plans. Wilson can also operate in midfield and it’s perhaps significant that Pulis made this point after completing the deal yesterday…
“He showed great maturity last season in what was a very difficult time for Portsmouth, so he will give us more competition for midfield places. Like Jon Walters, he can operate in a couple of positions and that provides us with different options which we will need over the course of the season.”
Wilson could well have been bought as a midfield protector then – a curious move perhaps given that the experience of Salif Diao was also secured on a two-year deal on yesterday’s deadline.
The more illustrious signings of Gudjohnsen and Pennant meanwhile suggest that Pulis is looking to develop Stoke City’s game further and move away from their label as a direct, aggressive outfit who feed off set-plays. Certainly Gudjohnsen’s arrival from Monaco on loan indicates that we will see the ball on the deck more often at the Britannia.

Blackpool Football Club have announced about the only transfer that seemed inevitable when they qualified for the Premier League back in May – DJ Campbell has joined the club on a permanent basis.
Campbell spent a good portion of last season on loan at the Tangerines and played an integral part in the Championship campaign with a play-off hat-trick against Forest (sorry Mark) perhaps the most notable of his 11 goals in 18 games.
Blackpool have been rumoured to sign just about any striker under the sun this summer, ranging from Brett Pitman to Marcus Tudgay (both didn’t move) and now look like they have made Campbell their final striking signing alongside Marlon Harewood, Luke Varney and this afternoon’s capture of the winger Matt Phillips from Wycombe Wanderers.

Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of Manchester United starlet Tom Cleverley on a season-long loan to bolster their ranks today.
The young midfielder impressed on Manchester United’s pre-season tour which led to Sir Alex Ferguson claiming that he intended to keep and blood him through this season. Instead Ferguson has seen fit to release the impressive England U21 international and allow him to get a full season of regular Premier League appearances under his belt at the DW Stadium.
This is nothing new for Cleverley. He enjoyed a loan spell with regular appearances at Leicester City in League One; this was followed by a near full season at Watford in the Championship last season. He claimed the Player of the Season gong at Vicarage Road, scoring 11 goals in 33 appearances before the spell was cut short by injury. Having regained his fitness and form, Cleverley now steps up in a similar deal, this time in the top flight with Wigan.

After a last minute panic, Sunderland succeeded in what must go down as the biggest coup of the deadline day deals by smashing their club record transfer record to for Ghanaian World Cup star Asamoah Gyan. The striker arrives from French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes for a fee in excess of £13 million.
The big striker heads to Wearside with a reputation glowing from a string of impressive performances at this summer’s World Cup. Apart from a last minute penalty miss – Darren Bent owners can probably be safe there – the striker caught the eye of many European clubs as Ghana made it to the quarter-finals.
It was Steve Bruce though who acted with reports suggesting that Sunderland had been tracking the striker before South Africa. With the recent confirmation that Frazier Campbell could be out for the season with an injury he picked up against Manchester City at the weekend, the new signing is timely and Gyan will surely not have to wait long for his debut.

Alexander Hleb’s year-long loan from Barcelona has got the Birmingham faithful at last celebrating the belated flexing of the club’s financial muscles. The classy Belarus international oozes quality and will add a huge slice of craft and creativity to a Birmingham midfield known for its industry rather than guile.
Not surprisingly, Alex McLeish was rather pleased with his new addition..
“This is a major signing for us and we are very happy to have him here. He is an extremely creative type who is skillful, a great dribbler and has an excellent touch and quick feet.”
In Fantasy terms however it’s not so easy to share the Birmingham boss’ enthusiasm. Hleb is of course a known figure in the Premier League having spent three seasons at the Emirates under Arsene Wenger. During his time there Hleb built his reputation as a silky playmaker, offering plenty of artistry from a central or even a wide position. His Fantasy returns however, were somewhat disappointing.

Paul Konchesky’s expected move to Anfield has been completed this afternoon with Fulham now announcing the departure of the left-back on their official site and Liverpool confirming the deal on theirs.
The former West Ham full-back joins his old boss Roy Hodgson at Liverpool, presumably at this stage, for an undisclosed fee.
The deal, perhaps the most significant so far for Fantasy Managers on a predictably quiet transfer deadline day so far, brings a 5.0 defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game onto our radars as an option within a Liverpool defence that kept 17 clean sheets last season.

Wigan and Birmingham have agreed a fee for Charles N’Zogbia and the move is expected to be completed later today following a medical.
While this will be one of many transfers prior to Tuesday’s transfer window, it could be one of the most significant from a Fantasy perspective.
N’Zogbia is a hot property for Fantasy Managers having enjoyed an outstanding season at the DW last term, fetching 5 goals, 7 assists and an impressive 31 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points.
His 6.0 starting price tag saw him attract a great deal of pre-season interest from Fantasy Managers but Wigan’s poor start and constant speculation surrounding the Frenchman’s future have stalled his start to the season. That now looks settled with the move to join Alex McLeish at St Andrews.

Man City have completed the deal that brings James Milner to Eastlands and has Stephen Ireland going in the opposite direction.
Medicals were passed this afternoon with City agreeing a substantial fee for Milner in addition to Ireland’s transfer – rumoured to be £16 million, with Ireland valued at an additional £8 million.
For Fantasy Managers its very much a bittersweet situation. On the face of it we could be losing a signficant option in midfield in the shape of Milner who now must be classified as a player under threat of rest and rotation and who will struggle for Bonus Point recognition amongst City’s squad of plentiful assets. Ireland is a different story entirely; here we have a former Fantasy success story emerging from obscurity at Eastlands to possibly return to our radars as a mid-price proposition…

Chelsea have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for Ricardo Carvalho with the move expected to be completed imminently subject to a medical.
Carvalho leaves the club after more than six years of service during which time he forged a formidable barrier with skipper John Terry.
In Fantasy terms he was at times a strong proposition – slightly cheaper than Terry but often just as likely to pop up with a set-piece goal to supplement impressive defensive returns. Injuries and the slight threat of rotation around Champions League matches began to eat away at his potential however and in truth Carvalho’s departure now makes the lives of Fantasy Managers that little bit easier. Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira will be feel the impact of this move and Fantasy Managers will now be reassessing the potential of both.

Liverpool have today confirmed the signing of Joe Cole on a free transfer.
Released by Chelsea last month, Cole has signed a four-year deal at Anfield. The move was widely expected with reports at the weekend of betting being suspended on the transfer.
The deal is all but complete barring any complications in the medical which is due to take place in the next 48-hours according to the Liverpool statement. Effectively Liverpool have traded Cole for Yossi Benayoun who agreed a move to Stamford Bridge earlier this month for a fee of around £5 million.
No doubt we will hear more from Cole and a beaming Roy Hodgson later but for now there’s no doubt that this could prove a significant signing from a Fantasy perspective…
