Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 36

We take our usual Sunday evening look at the number of new injuries picked up over the weekend’s fixtures, with United nursing a number of concerns in the final third.

Chelsea
Kurt Zouma was selected ahead of Gary Cahill for this afternoon’s draw with Liverpool but lasted just 35 minutes before being subbed off through injury. Petr Cech missed out altogether with a slight neck problem.

Everton
Leighton Baines is set for scans after being forced off through injury 74 minutes into the Toffees’ 2-0 home loss to Sunderland. Post-match, Roberto Martinez went on to say:

“We are going to assess his ankle. He was really suffering, it was very painful so at that point we couldn’t take any risks. We are going to assess him over the next 48 hours and find out if he is going to be available for the rest of the season.”

Leicester
Nigel Pearson is sweating on the fitness of Matty James, after the midfielder was stretchered off during yesterday’s clash with Southampton. Post-match, the Foxes boss seemed pessimistic over the midfielder’s injury before also revealing that substitute David Nugent picked up a problem in the 2-0 win:

“We had to deal with a couple of injuries throughout the game. Matty James picked up what looks to be quite a serious knee injury then Nuge (David Nugent) going on as a sub and not being able to finish the game at full tilt. It potentially gives you a few problems. Credit to the players though, they dealt with what they had to today. [For Matty James] It really is a case of getting the scan done and taking it from there. It doesn’t look to be at all encouraging. It could be a serious knee injury, but we’ll wait and see what the scan tells us. With Nuge it’ll be a case of having a scan and seeing where we go.”

Reports also indicate that Leonardo Ulloa sustained a hamstring problem before making way for Nugent.

Manchester United
Luke Shaw and Wayne Rooney were both withdrawn due to injury during United’s trip to Palace. After the 2-1 win, Louis van Gaal played down the pair’s problems:

“It was very bad because our team was out of balance. Phil Jones had to play as a left full-back. Rooney has a dead leg so I had to change things that were not in our favour at that time, but still these in circumstances, we fought until the end and we have beaten Crystal Palace. Shaw took an elbow and had a bloody nose, but he went to the hospital and I have already heard that he shall fly home with us so I don’t think it is very bad. Out of precaution, we took him off. Rooney had a dead leg so next week he is healthy and fit to play.”

Robin van Persie and Angel di Maria missed out at Selhurst Park due to illness and injury respectively, whilst Chris Smalling was subbed off after suffering cramp. Van Gaal admitted the defender wasn’t playing particularly well prior to being hauled off:

“[Smalling] was stumbling and I don’t think he played his best match so that’s why I changed. He had cramp, you could see it because he was pulling at his toes.

Newcastle
Vurnon Anita was withdrawn late on after sustaining an injury during the Magpies draw with West Brom.

QPR
Sandro was unable to feature in today’s trip to City due to issues with his UK Residency visa.

    OSPINA
    PVA - Ivan - Skrtel
    Sterling - Hazard - RAMSEY - Silva - Hendo
    Aguero - Kane

    £1.7m in bank

I know i'll get a different answer at 10pm tonight but what would you do here?

    A) Sterling > Cazorla
    B) Sterling > Ozil
    C) Hazard > Sanchez
    D) take a hit for Sanchez so that I can keep Hazard

    Migno

    Terry - PvA - Koscielny

    Hazard - Sterling - Silva - Sanchez

    Aguero - Benteke - Kane

    (Myhill - Clyne - Duff - Phillips)

I am tempted by Sterling out for a punt (Mahrez? Sunderland Mid?) to fund Kane -> Giroud for a -4.

    Would appreciate any input!

DGW, most guaranteed starter in that attack, takes set pieces, is very involved in play making, also has a decent shot. It's not as if Sunderland attack was appealing, but when teams with bad attack actually score it is often from set pieces, so Larsson or Gomez (penalties) is likely to get to points in that case.

Fair enough, but your team is right now what most wish theirs to look like. There's nothing seriously wrong with it, although you don't have Arsenal defence which I think would be worth investing (I may double up on it).

    GW37:

    Cech*
    Ivanovic - Zouma* - Terry - Luis
    Loftus Cheek - Ake
    Cuadrado - Fabregas/Willian - Hazard/Willian
    Brown

    * If fit. Otherwise replace with Courtois and Cahill.

Look about right? Or do you see more than one of Fabregas, Willian and Hazard getting a rest? Could also be Ake at left back, with Matic or Mikel alongside Loftus-Cheek. Ramires or Oscar could well get a game if they're fit, too...

Think Ake might get a run at CB, Mourinho probably won't be too confident with two youngsters forming the base of the midfield. Brown might play at LM/LW with Remy up top again. Think it'll be something like Cuadrado-Fabregas-Brown, with Willian and Hazard getting rested

      Looks good otherwise

Only reason why I think he might play is cause he'll want to challenge for the assists record.

Will judge Cuadrado after he gets a pre-season to his belt, different players settle in a new league at different rates. Willian originally started off poorly but look at him now

i don't understand Mourinho love for Mikel. He has played the games for a medal. Matic will play. Czech and Zouma won't. Zouma stupid for staying on as long as he did. makes Cahill safe IMO. Haz in biggest danger and at 11.4 a lot of money wasted. Poor game yesterday. He will play last game IMO.
      The rest is pure guesswork.

The way round the Hazard problem

Buy Gomez or Larsson as the cheap 5th mid and bench Hazard for this week .

Then bring him back all rested and raring to go for the last day home party v Sunderland

WBA is no longer in the relegation battle, so if Hazard plays, and I guess he will, he may as well destroy that team. It has been one lousy team.

Why are the player and team of the season awards voted too early?

Now in hindsight it is ridiculous that aguero isn't in the team of the year, and wasn't even a nominee for player of the year.I bet he'll score a few more in the next two as well making it even more farcical

Hm not something I'd considered. It gives me a benching headache this week though:

Ivanovic (wba), PvA (LEI, ars), Bellerin (mun, SUN), Kosc (mun, SUN) and Vlaar (sou).

Don't you fancy any other Arsenal mids other than Sanchez?

You could play 4 defenders. It is permitted. 😉 Hazard will need to be benched anyway I think.

Yes, any Arsenal mid is worthwhile, I'd prefer Cazorla marginally over Ozil/Ramsey. But not for Eden, you'll regret it if you don't have him in GW38.

I wouldn't be taking a hit whatever you do. Not with that squad.

Well, I've noticed this trend personally, assuming a player plays around 3000 mins or more. Don't think it is quite that simple but I've used it to judge a player's value myself.

That would put haz as around 11-11.5 and counting

Obviously aguero has only played 2300 mins so doesn't work for him or other similar cases

Actually what I've noticed is that the season ending price is normally the starting price for next season (except the players who have been injured a lot in the season as it doesn't let them rise/fall enough)

However, this year's slow rises would defo change that..and Kane. But as a ballpark figure, it works.
