Scout Notes – Champions League – Wednesday

Spurs are wasteful but still cruise to victory while Leicester are woeful and pay the price as the Champions League shuts up shop for the calendar year. Here’s how the last round of group matches played out.

Tottenham 3 CSKA Moscow 1

Mauricio Pochettino spent much of his pre-match time talking up the delights of the Europa League and promptly picked a strong Spurs side in case anyone doubted his sincerity.

He made just one change from the team that spanked Swansea City, Harry Winks (4.5) coming in for Mousa Dembele (5.4), and a generally one-sided affair ensued.

In-form trio Christian Eriksen (8.3), Harry Kane (11.1) and Dele Alli (8.1) were at the heart of the win.

The latter two claimed a goal apiece and both fired seven attempts, Kane scoring for the sixth time in five matches since returning from injury.

The influential Eriksen set up Alli’s first half equaliser and supplied eight scoring chances, while Danny Rose (5.9) also provided an assist as Spurs wound up winning with ease. They still managed to miss a host of opportunities to seal the deal before CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev contrived to save an Alli header only to then kick the ball into his own net.

The return of centre half Toby Alderweireld (6.3), a second half substitution, lightened the mood further.

The Belgian has remained in 9.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads despite missing six Gameweeks through injury. His recovery looks to be beautifully timed – Spurs will play three times in a week before Christmas, have ten days off and then play three more times in a week from December 28.

That ridiculously lop-sided schedule is bookended by fixtures away at Manchester United and home to Chelsea, and Alderweireld will surely play a major part in much of it.

A disappointing Champions League campaign now begets a 2017 Europa League tilt, with Spurs involved in both legs of the Round of 32 between Gameweeks 25 (away at Liverpool) and 26 (at home to Stoke) in mid to late February.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Son (Nkoudou 62), Wanyama (Alderweireld 68), Winks, Eriksen, Alli, Kane (Onomah 83).
Subs not used: Vorm, Sissoko, Dembele, Wimmer.

FC Porto 5 Leicester City 0

Leicester City finally got round to bringing their poor domestic form onto the European stage on a night when their fringe players failed to take a rare first-team opportunity.

With the group already won, Claudio Ranieri was more than justified in making ten changes to the team that lost to Sunderland, with skipper Wes Morgan (4.9) the only survivor.

But he would have hoped for a lot more than the abject display his squad players then produced.

The scoreline didn’t flatter Porto – the Foxes managed precisely zero shots on target all night.

Last season’s revelations Jamie Vardy (9.6) and Riyad Mahrez (9.0) didn’t even travel and Ranieri gave Nampalys Mendy (4.4) his first start since August in a midfield also containing Danny Drinkwater (5.3), who is currently serving a domestic ban.

To cap a desperate night, the England midfielder then limped off with a knee injury in the second half, although Ranieri played down the issue post-match.

“Drinkwater’s injury doesn’t look serious. He is suspended for Saturday anyway, but he should be okay.”

The normally cheery coach was sombre in his appraisal of the debacle, ostensibly blaming himself, although not completely.

“I have no regrets because I wanted to give an opportunity to all my players. If I needed to win or draw, I would bring all my first team to fight, but when you know there is another difficult match on Saturday against Man City and you are top of the group, why not give a chance to players who say ‘why I don’t play? We are losing in the Premier League, give me a chance’. For this reason, I give me a chance to them. That’s it. Then, the result is my fault but they missed a great chance.”

Once that Manchester City match is out of the way, the Foxes have a good run of fixtures – Everton and West Ham at home, Bournemouth, Stoke and Middlesbrough away – through to early January.

The transfer window will be open again by then and there is currently little in Leicester’s squad to warrant Fantasy investment.

Leiecester City XI: Hamer; Hernandez, Wasilewski, Morgan, Chilwell, Gray, Mendy, Drinkwater (Barnes 76), Schlupp Albrighton (45), Okazaki, Musa Ulloa (45).
Subs not used: Amartey, Simpson, Zieler, Fuchs.

Im really considering Son over Siggy from gw16-19 . Thoughts ?

    Siggy- wba mid WHM BOU

    Son- HUL BUR sot wat

Son has better ppg(6.4) with 5 goals and 5 assists in 11 matches compared to Siggy's(4.6) 4 goals and 4 assists in 14

Son playing for a better team and more explosive ( 3 double digit score compared to 1 of Siggy

He's a decent punt but I still prefer Siggy.

      Worth watching for sure.

It could be argued, however, that the points will be shared between Spurs mids and that Siggy has more involvement for Swansea as he is on set pieces.

But, it's clear that Pochettino is looking to build up some momentum and if Spurs hit form I would rather have Son. A win, or convincing draw at OT, and I'll definitely be tempted by him.

Same here , I am thinking of doubling up on Spurs for GW16,17 with Kane already in my team.
I dont see swans scoring many goals against boro and wba (away games ) who are solid in defense at home.

Yeap only downside is Son has a slight rotation risk .

But he has been playing well in the last couple of matches. making changes may disrupt the team momentum

I have the exact funds to do Walcott to Eriksen, but having already taken a -4 and with fixtures the way they are, I don't want to actually pull the trigger until next week. But Eriksen is rising and Walcott is dropping.....so frustrating!!!!

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Spurs midfielders are still only owned by a small number of FPL managers, with not a single one managing to breach the 10% ownership mark.

Are the majority missing a trick by swerving the likes of Eriksen and Alli? Or is investment in one of the pair and Kane too much Spurs coverage?

Do you already own a Spurs midfielder and Kane? If not do you plan to ahead of their plum home ties against Burnley and Hull next week?

Contemplating Eriksen in next week for Firminho/Siggy depending on how things go this week, currently have Kane as 'cover' and I reckon my thinker BF may be standard on here!

I would love to have one, but finding it difficult to squeeze them in. I can either settle for Son or take a hit to remove Koscielny and bring in one of Eriksen or Alli. Either way, I'm holding off this week and will wait to see how they perform at the weekend.

There was a time last season when some of us had all of Eriksen, Alli and Kane. Granted, Alli's price facilitated it last time round but with the upcoming run of fixtures and their current form it might be worth a shout right now.

I'm concerned they are going to be a bit like Liverpool midfielders taking turns at getting points hauls.

Gameweek just gone they scored 5 goals so they all got in on the act but they won't do that every week.

My other concern is Lamela, Sissoko, N'Koudou, Janssen etc surely they will all get game time over the Christmas period granted I know Lamela & Janssen are currently injured.

Think I'm more tempted by Payet than a Spurs midfielder.

I think he absolutely is. Be prepared for him to play 70-75 mins, but you'd hope the points will have been bagged by then. When Janssen is back, it's also feasible that Alli may face the 75 mins rotation issue, or drop back into CM whilst the likes of Dembele/Winks/Wanyama go off

You get what you pay for. The PPG just reflects that Son did well for a spell while the rest of our attack was dire. Alli and Eriksen have looked at their last-season in the past couple of games and the upcoming fixtures will only help their cause.

PPG mean nothing if he doesn't play and considering we are expecting rotation over Christmas, I'd be concerned.

Also, Son has had his purple patch whilst Alli and Eriksen are only just starting to find form. This is the issue when looking at one metric. Need I remind you that Walcott had a better PPG than Sanchez...

            • 7 Years

Son 6.4 is his form not ppg - Form is points over the last four games I believe and ppg is all season.

And out of the three I see most influencing the games is erikson in terms of chances created and free kicks, corners. But Alli may benefit from these chances created if you know what I mean.

Watched the Moscow game and erikson was making things happen where as Alli was making the late lampard esque runs into the box hence he got the 1.5 goals. So Im tempted to put both alli and erikson in for GW15.

The only thing stopping me is payets fixtures - Payet has highet creatvity in league and he has burnley and hull at home next.

Erikson and Alli prob safer option but Im a gambler so most likely erikson and payet for gw 15 and 16.

tough call. I like doubling up, even tripling, and it's paid off with Liverpool this year. That said, Spurs aren't always free scoring, and rotation is a risk, especially with a midweek game at home to Hull.

For those back to back games, as a short term punt, I think I prefer Payet, because he's nailed on for both.

It's a bit of an issue that points will be shared amongst Son, Eriksen and Alli, and given the options currently available in midfield.

That said, It's probably worth it, with Eriksen the pick of the bunch. Firing far more shots on target this year vs. previous years, on corners and both direct and indirect free kicks with Lamela out, and best for the baps.

Siggy's form/fixtures/price keeps him ahead of Spurs options at the moment.
A lot of cheaper mids have better form than Alli.
Not sure whether beating an awful Swansea team distorts the appeal if you consider the returns they were producing before that result. I know Eriksen had 10pts against Chelsea but hadn't offered a lot before that.
If Coutinho wasn't injured wouldn't even be considering Spurs options.
This said a decent performance against Utd could see a surge in Spurs mids ownership.

Pre-Chelsea standards are irrelevant now. Current form - Chelsea, Swansea, CSKA - they have been playing the free-flowing football of last season. The fixtures will only help to continue that.

Siggy is a good pick but don't forget he plays for the team bottom of the league.

As a Spurs fan all I can say is that Eriksen is been far from convincing this season, and Alli is getting into good positions but finishing has been poor. Admittedly Eriksen looks to have perhaps turned a corner so is one to monitor, but with so many other options in midfield I'm personally sticking with Kane and Walker (although Rose is also a good option) and monitoring the midfield.

I agree with this, but have an awful feeling that Eriksen will be the assister of the assister. Also, despite Alli not finishing his chances, he is still going to get a few which will translate into points.

I've got Kane, and I'll be getting Alderweireld in next week. That's enough for me. Should have goals and cs covered there, plus always potential for a goal or assist from Toby.

Owned Eriksen last week but his price rise meant I was able to transfer him for Hazard today.

Thinking of bringing him back in for Firmino next week.

I wildcarded a couple of weeks ago and brought in Kane and Eriksen which has paid off handsomely (90 points last GW). Your 'goals imminent' chart helped me choose Eriksen and I expect to hang onto him for a bit- while Spurs are attacking so easily, I expect he'll be among the points but Alli looks potentially more dangerous.

My current issue is not owning Costa, but with his suspension tightrope and lack of double-figure hauls I'll live with the compromise for now and keep more money in midfield.

Seriously considering saving my transfer this week and doing Gundogan & Austin > Eriksen & Anichebe for the midweek games. Only have 0.1m leeway though..

Have Kane, Walker and Son. Have full trust on Spurs for the coming GWs to score big points.

I'm already maxed out on Spurs with Walker, Alli and Kane. I kind of wish I had Eriksen as well but it would cost me 2 transfers as I would need to get rid of Walker. I might upgrade walker to Alderweireld if I find myself with a spare transfer later in the season.

Unless pedro convinces me otherwise this weekend, I have an easy switch to Eriksen to make next week.

Getting rid of Bolasie and Aguero and definitely getting Kane in.

Gives me £8.4m for a midfielder. Who do I go for?

Could this be the time to spend a bit more on defense?

Defenders tend to suffer less from Rotation en with chelsea + spurs fixtures having both Alonso + Toby + (maybe Lovren) might be well worth the investment imo

Looking at previous year Walker was rotated with Trippier whenever Spurs were facing a period of fixture congestion. He played the 90 yesterday, will play the 90 ok sunday, then he will be rested midweek against Hull unfortunately

A - Capoue to Moses (bench Rondon)

    B - Morgan to Alonso (play 4 at back Amat,Cedric, Alonso,Holebas)
    (Again bench Rondon)

Means not doing Morgen to Valencia next week

Which is better choice to start this GW (In a draft league)?

    Anichebe (Swansea away)
    or
Caroll (Liverpool Away) maybe used as a sub

    M right now on Anichebe.

Already used my FT Aguero to Kane

    Chech
    Lovren Morgan Alonso
    Sanchez Pedro Firmino Sig
    Costa Anichibe Kane

    Subs: Pickford Capoue Williams Pieters

Took a -4 to get Alonso for Shawcross

Is it worth another -8 for pedro & Williams to Hazard and Ake?

Borderline, but I actually think it's worth it.

If not paying for itself this week (and it could very well do with Hazard...) certainly over the next few GW.

Plus it gets rid of Williams who is stinking up your team.

Up to you but I'd probably go for it- but then I am probably biased as I've had 3x -12s and a -8 in the last 4 weeks. All but one of them paid off instantly!

If you're comfortable going hazardless over Chelsea's run of plum fixtures, then do this.

West Ham beat Liverpool 3:0, 2:0 in the league and 2:1 in FA cup replay, all last season. Hopefully they'll do okay again at the weekend. May bring in Cresswell soon if they sort themselves out.
