Great Expectations – Paul Pogba

Returning to Manchester United from Juventus for a world record transfer fee last summer, it’s fair to say that Paul Pogba failed to live up to the considerable hype.

The Frenchman signed off from Serie A duties by delivering eight goals and 12 assists in 35 league outings in 2015/16 but struggled to replicate that output under Jose Mourinho.

A total of five goals and four assists across 30 league outings earned a total of just 115 points in 2015/16 – placing him as lowly as thirty-third among Fantasy Premier League midfielders.

Meanwhile, an average of 3.8 points per match (ppm) in FPL was some way behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 5.8 ppm as the Red Devils struggled for a cutting edge in Mourinho’s first season at the helm.

But heading into their second season, there is building anticipation of bigger things to come from both Mourinho and his record signing.

  • Having started last season priced at 8.5 in FPL, Pogba’s tally of 115 points – placing him behind Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend and on a par with West Bromwich Albion’s Matt Phillips – certainly suggests that the Frenchman will avoid a price hike. With the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and the main midfielders from both Spurs and Liverpool all destined to rise in light of their 2016/17 endeavours, Pogba could emerge as an unlikely value option.
  • Pogba’s end-of-season output may well hint at what’s to come next time around. A goal and assist against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 38 – equaling his campaign-high haul in a 44-minute first-half cameo – was then followed by the opener in United’s Europa League final win over Ajax. That was the first time in 2016/17 that he’d scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions and strengthens the theory that he could become a more pivotal figure with Ibrahimovic out of the picture.
  • Handed his debut in Gameweek 2, Pogba was one of the few assured starters under Mourinho last season, finishing every league match from that point onwards until he was ruled out of the Gameweek 29 encounter against Middlesbrough with a hamstring problem. Although his minutes were managed towards the end of the campaign due to the club’s Europa League run, Pogba started more league matches (29) than any United outfield player in 2016/17.
  • In the final third, Pogba claimed first place for touches (860) and successful passes (477) for United and was second only to Ibrahimovic for passes received (566 to 569). With ball-playing centre-half Viktor Lindelof now on board, there’s a feeling that Pogba will not be required to drop deep to orchestrate attacks and instead edge further forward as Mourinho makes his customary second-season charge for the title. This could be particularly pertinent, given that only 37 of Pogba’s 92 efforts last term arrived from inside the opposition’s penalty area.
  • Ranked top for key passes (57) for Mourinho’s side, Pogba was second only to Ibrahimovic (115) for total attempts and placed seventh among FPL midfielders. While a dire 5.4% conversion rate sums up his disappointing campaign, his average of 28.3 minutes per shot – bettered only by four regular midfielders – illustrates his propensity to look for goal.
  • The opening schedule also strengthens United’s bid to get off to a flier. Bearing in mind that they play only one of last season’s top six (WHM, swa, LEI, sto, EVE, sot, CPL, liv, hud) in the first nine Gameweeks, investment in Mourinho’s regulars looks set to be a popular strategy. With uncertainty still hanging over their first-choice striker for the campaign ahead, Pogba has the chance to play his way into our initial squad planning.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Only if he was 7.0 or below but reckon he'll be 7.5 / 8.0 so it's a no for me.

All about the price list, but I'm certainly looking at having 2 United given their opening fixtures are among the most favourable.

Pogba looked like he had potential when he played with Ibra and Carrick. If he wasn't so wasteful he would have scored a decent amount of points. Obviously you can say the same for many other players, but Pogba scored and assisted a lot for Juve.

If United brings in a stronger hold up striker than Rashford(Morata?) and an anchor(Fabinho?), then an 8.0 priced Pogba would be interesting.

Depends on prices, his and others.
Also depends on if a designated DM tranfers in, so Pog can roam freely.
But I very much would like to punt o Pogba.

Two CS blanks wouldn't have been the end of the world but he got injured during the first game. Think he pulled his hamstring with a shot that was a whisker from going in as well which added insult to injury.

Thoughts on Michail Antonio for next season lads?

I think he has become the forgotten man since he got injured end of last season.
If priced under 7m and still classified as a Mid he may be in my GW1 team.
He got 9 goals & 8 assist in 29 starts last season.

Fixtures are okay , WH start of with 3 away fixtures but they seemed to play better away from home last season anyway.

      Hey Kangaroo

100% on my radar, and I'd say very likely in my team. Lots of potential if not in bloody right back, owned him for lots of last year and he did exactly what I wanted him to: something in every 2 or 3 games. He did have a drought at one point but fought back, and can offer a random goal or something (got me 3 assists at one point last year) to really supplement your score on a given gameweek.

      Are you looking at him?

Also,Ayew could be interesting if he gets more integrated with the team: is there an OOP potential there?

      1. FPL Kangaroo
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Yes I'm very much looking at Antonio for start of next season.
Especially if West Ham don't sign any big new striker.
He should be priced under 7.5m too which is reasonable.
Also he was playing in a poor/underperforming team last season so expect even more points from him this season.

Ayew is another interesting option.Did alright towards the end of the season but only got into the team due to Antonio's injury. So will be interesting to see if both can play together.

Lallana Can and Wijnaldum will all be prone to rotation, not sure what Klopp will go for especially if we sign a striker and/or a new CM. Could say the same about Henderson but he is our captain and the injuries will probably sort the rotating for him anyway.

Ah, we've got the same bunch of nutters here in Sweden.
Unfortunately they are closing in to be the 2nd biggest party any day now. We have 7 other established parties in 2 blocks, neither is big enough to rule without help. No other established partie want anything to do with the nutters and wont let them in to their block. So an agreement has been done between the blocks in order to keep the nutters out. Nothing much gets done this way of course.
Meanwhile the nutters can continue to point at what's wrong and need not take any responsibility and all that leads to is growning day by day.

Which under the radar players are you monitoring at the moment (one for each position):

GK: Begovic (moved from Chelsea so should get games)
DF: Schlupp (Palace improved defence at the end of the season and De Boer may see him as an attacking outlet)
MF: Antonio (forgotten man because of injury)
FW: Deeney (Silva may be able to get the best out of him)

I'm still marginally for Mane, you have to remember there's a transition factor: he didn't see much of the PL and rotation did bite. But the stats are really exciting.

Mane's goal conversion rate is difficult to ignore.

Was Salah in a similar set up to Liverpool with Roma last season? i.e. Was he surrounded by free scoring midfielders or was he the main man?

                Just had a look:

So in most games he lined up on the left wing of a 3-2-3-1 formation. For example, the day he got a hat trick they lined up like:

                Strootman Rossi
                Salah Rainggolan Perotti
                Dzeko

Dzeko undoubtedly the main man with 29 goals and 9 assists last term. Nainggolan got 11 g 5 a, and Perrotti 8g 5a so the points were certainly shared somewhat, but he was the secondary source of output for Roma it seems.

Could augur well if Mane is #1 and Salah is #1

Very interesting, indeed. It's going to be a tough one if Salah is £1m to £2m cheaper than Mane.

Could be an interesting punt, I'd still prefer Mane as one of my premium mids I think over him. Gives the additional captaincy option I'm willing to pay the extra 1.0 for

This is fantastic. Thanks for this.
I am getting the feel from Salah that I got from Mkhi last season, and he didn't turn out as we all thought.
I'm assuming, being that it's Klopp and not Jose, Salah stands a much better chance of being nailed and generally succeeding?

        Thanks both!

Lovren - yeah the thinking was Klopp will play him, like he did with Mane when he signed him from Southampton.

As I've said already, feels like the first signing that could be really relevant for us fpl managers

Haha, there's a klaasen article up on the blog too 😉

He was also relevant no doubt, 7.5 likely and more than one eye for goal. I mean in terms that this could be a high scoring player here. I think from a neutral perspective the most exciting for sure. Apart from Fletcher's move to Stoke.

He should be nailed aswell, but what about when bolasie comes back tho?
I also think Ryan could be a popular rotation GK.
              I'm probably going for:
              Forster/Ryan

Klaasen is more central and I think Bolasie will be on the wing rather than in AMC.

Not a rotating keepers man, I like 4.5/4.0 no.1 and no.13 setup, with the rest of the money further forward. Ryan a contender, Maepaa looks like a nailed on 4.0 backup. Needs to be 4.5 tho!

Had been a Chelsea a few seasons ago was crap so he went out on loan for a few season. Roma signed him at the start of last season for £10 million and sold him to Liverpool for £39 million

Not really sure that he is any good just looks like Liverpool are desperate to sign him
