Scout Report – Roque Mesa

Swansea City confirmed their third new addition this summer with the signing of Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa for £11 million.

The 28-year-old midfielder inked a four-year deal with the Swans and revealed that head coach Paul Clement was one of the key factors behind his decision to join the Welsh side:

“One of the main reasons I had to be here was that the manager wanted me – that’s a great incentive. I felt I needed a new experience and challenge. The manager knows me, he knows how I play and what I can contribute to the team. I’ll try to make the team play.”

The History

Mesa started out at as a youth player at Levante and made his senior debut for the reserves during the 2007/08 season.

He then took in brief spells at lower league sides Huracan and Tenerife B before linking up with Las Palmas reserves in 2010.

The midfielder moved to the first-team squad a year later, but it was only during the 2014/15 season when his career really began to take off.

He was a crucial member of the Las Palmas side that gained promotion to La Liga, producing four goals and three assists in 35 league outings.

Mesa earned plenty of plaudits for his performances in La Liga last season, with several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Sevilla and Liverpool, reportedly among those interested in the Spaniard.

He has racked up 69 appearances in the Spanish top flight, registering two goals and five assists, playing predominantly either as a defensive midfielder or in the middle of the park.

The Prospects

As Mesa’s position and output suggests, the Spaniard is unlikely to himself be a factor in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but his addition should play a major role in boosting the stock of both Swansea defenders and attackers.

His strengths centre around his passing, ball-winning ability and impressive stamina levels which allow him to cover every blade of grass, helping the tenacious midfielder to be compared to Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.

Last season, only Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi recorded more forward passes in La Liga than Mesa, while since the start of the 2015/16 season, the 28-year-old has recovered possession more times than any other outfield player in the Spanish top flight.

Bearing in mind the quality of midfield players in Spain, Mesa certainly looks set to dramatically improve things for Swansea in that area of the pitch.

Leon Britton was a key figure for the Swans during the run-in last season as the Welsh club narrowly avoided relegation, but at 34, he can’t be relied upon to play week in, week out.

Mesa may well take over from the Swans skipper in the defensive midfield role then, although he could also operate either on the right of the midfield diamond favoured by Clement during the tail end of last season, or as part of a three-man midfield in a 4-3-3 system.

Tom Carroll, Leroy Fer, Ki Sung-Young and Jay Fulton are the other players battling for spots in the Swansea midfield, although Ki will miss the start of the season due to a knee injury.

One of the main beneficiaries of Mesa’s deep-lying playmaking should be Gylfi Sigurdsson, providing he remains at the Liberty Stadium amid mounting interest from Everton and Leicester City.

Jonathan Viera occupied a similar role to Sigurdsson for Las Palmas last term, and with Mesa working his magic from a deeper position, that allowed Viera to flourish in the more advanced areas, finishing third in La Liga for chances created with 81.

Sigurdsson himself produced 72 key passes last term, with that number likely to increase playing alongside Mesa, who boasted a passing accuracy of 91.2% in 2017/18.

Mesa’s lack of attacking threat means he is likely to come in at around 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and bearing in mind he has also picked up 26 yellow cards over the past two seasons, he is unlikely to enter our thoughts as a viable budget option.

Sky Sports have introduced him as a 7.6 option, a good 1.0 more than Britton and 0.7 more than Cork.

But passing bonus could yet see Mesa justify that price tag, with the Spaniard likely to trip the tier one threshold for bonus points for 60 completed passes.

Britton and Cork managed this just twice each last season, averaging 35.8 and 40.5 completed passes per match respectively.

In contrast, Mesa averaged a formidable 64.7 completed passes per appearance in La Liga. However, it remains to be seen if his tika-taka style can immediately impose itself in the Premier League. If he can translate those figures to English football, his Sky Sports bonus potential will be strong.

Indeed, having lost their identity over recent seasons, the addition of Mesa is a giant stride towards the Swans returning to a possession-based gameplan, with the Spaniard the new heartbeat of the side.

Only six teams had less possession than Swansea (45.1%) following the arrival of Clement, compared to 58.6% during their maiden Premier League campaign back in 2011/12 under Brendan Rodgers, when only two sides managed more.

Mesa’s ability to sniff out danger in front of the back four may also be a contributing factor in boosting the Swans’ clean sheet potential.

That could be something worth considering given their very favourable run of home fixtures (MUN, NEW, WAT, HUD, LEI, BHA, BOU) over the opening months of the season and their home rotation pairing with West Brom.

Providing the Swans can keep hold of Sigurdsson and Alfie Mawson, the pair could prosper from Mesa’s range of talents in midfield and emerge as leading mid-price options.

As for Mesa himself, his all-action industry is only likely to be of use in daily Fantasy games where greater emphasis is placed on rewarding passing, tackles and recoveries.

I think usually the bigger marches be in Coleraine. The odd time they are here it would be heavily policed but most people with sense stay away but there will always be some on either side that fancy some agro.

I understand the need to keep people interested and all that and that's fair but i would like to see it made more difficult and that includes in pricing.. wack them up and force people into a choice of Lukaku or Kane.. shouldn't be doable from the off with 100 mil budget.. you would have a large section of Kane owners and a large section on big Rom and those who went both would be screwed.. would be epic..

Chelsea offered Aubameyang for £70m according to SS News. As if picking a strikeforce wasnt already difficult enough. If (big 'if' I know) it happens, mprovement on Costa? Better than Lukaku? Definitely better prospect than Morata imo

The fixture difficulty tables and the general player stats you used were fantastic and inspired me to pick better captains.

Personally, love the new chip, avoiding having to micro manage rubbish players in a short week can only be a good thing

Whats casual anyway. I mean the guy who won it, refused to pick any Liverpool players, it all a bit of fun. Some of the so called casuals pick just as good players as us, where they tend to fall down is handling the finance side, missing the occasional deadline and taking too many hits

There new chip ads to the FPL. AOA was dull was netted the lowest amount of points and unused by many.
Plus a chip that is more appealing to the casuals means less early dead teams.

The AOA cost me 12 benched points for Cameron in gw 38, I should have just left it unused

I don't like any of the chips that you are stupid to use in a SGW, which now amounts to 3 chips rather than 2. This chip will likely screw over a lot of beginners.

AOA was insignificant for the most part, but added more options to the game.

The good thing about the chip is that it prevents narrowing the player pool around blanks. It stinks when everyone owns Lukaku just because he doesn't have a blank.

      1. Diva
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Surely it narrows the player pool around the blank because everyone can keep their high performers, swap them out for one week, then - "bang" - they're back. Previously you had to make a strategic decision, do I try to maximize my return from the blank or do I try to ride it out? One less big decision to make equals less variety and more templateness.

Whatever it is, it is with this new chip. But the reason I won my leagues last season and the previous one was because I managed the dgws better than everyone else.. this season I won't have that advantage!

    1. Helia
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Actually I do take that back. I guess if you use that new chip in that week then you won't be bench boosting or triple captaining so that could still do a lot better if managed correctly

It does seem to make a tricky part of the game easier. I wish FPL would move in the opposite direction: higher prices, more price volatility, fewer chips, carry over as many unused trades as you want (can), etc. Stop the spoon feeding.

      1. Helia
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Not sure about the higher prices and volatility. Playing the price rising game already has benefits. Any more would make it more a money game

The carry over trades would be handy 🙂

To me, it all creates greater opportunities to try out different strategies. I played soft cap fantasy in other sports in the USA, and at least to me, more price volatility (coupled with limited trades) led to greater roster differentiation.

Some play early on for money to afford expensive players in the hopes to make up points later (we see a bit of this now). Some play strictly according to opposition schedules, and go for a steady, stable approach. I want to see a little bit more of a pull to using different approaches.

Right now, it seems that 80% of rosters have 80% the same players. Anything to mix that up more....

I see what you mean. Doubt such changes would be made just for the fact that they'd take it as too much of a risk to change a game that's so popular. Can see that giving the casuals less of a chance as the season goes on which I'm sure they wouldn't want also.

For us though it would make the game more interesting definitely, I take too long pondering over transfers as it is

      This is ridiculous.

Anything put into the game is of benefit to non-casuals. You have the time now to think and plan when to use it, whereas casuals have no clue- might not notice it, might use it in GW2 etc.

There are plenty of players that use BB on a week where their players have 'good fixtures' or even GW 1!

Just look at how much you won your DGW by and now imagine you used the Free Hit chip on that GW that only had 4 games. Add on those extra points you would've got for having a full and good squad. Therefore you're now more advantaged because of the chip.

It is so easy- did Warren Buffet start crying when the internet came along and opened business and markets up? No he adapted and used it to his advantage.

By being on this website, it is likely you'll adapt and still do well.

      Relax!

Alexis at Arsenal now that Lacazette is there.

Too expensive to fit into the team w/out going with only 1 heavy hitter forward and 2 mid priced forwards (Benteke/Austin/Llorente etc)

Was thrown out a bit by the last few games though? Teams on holiday/relegated and he bangs 7 in the last 2 games- seems like an outlier to me...

Just surprised at the religious fealty he's getting. Maybe everyones searching for a new King now Aguero seems to be finished.

It could be argued Alexis benefited too for teams on holiday? In fact Kane got 51 in the last 4 and Sanchez wasn't far behind on 47. Looking at the games (8) that Kane missed and WAT where he returned for 30', 300pts might have been on?

Captain factor rules Hazard out plus injury. Sanchez has someone stealing points now.

Is Aguero finished? ...surely he starts up front with Jesus on the right flank?

Finished as the FPL god he was I mean.

There's always going to be that nagging doubt associated with him now.

Sterling on the rw should suffer the most from the jesus/aguero situation

Sane is preferable for me out of all city attack

25 and 29 goals in the last two seasons, respectively, is kind of hard to argue with, whether he gets them in bunches or not.

It's close, but for me he is. There's something about knowing he is on pens, is the focal point of their attack, and is in a side that seems settled and has great chemistry. I'd feel comfortable putting the armband on Kane in every single match except, maybe, at Chelsea and at United. I can't say the same for Sanchez.

i see a lot of people mentioning milner but is he really going to be a nailed starter , wont robertson start or surely they will still sign someone new at lb?

I think people are dreaming of his potential last year if he was a defender. You'd think they'd buy someone...but you never know, guess we should wait and see.

Looks like as a def he would have got around 182pts? Extra point for goal and 3 extra per cleanie. Put's his PPM up to 5.05 so £6.5m is still decent pricing.
Is Robertson his replacement or is he cover as Moreno looks to leave? It doesn't feel like a 'big' enough name tbh but we'll see.

Firmino at 8.5 as a forward looks appealing until you realise for 0.5 more you can get Coutinho's extra point per goal and CS. Not to mention Cout's ppg was 5.5 last season compared to Firmino's 5.1.

Maybe there is going to be more value in mid once again, and 352 (or perhaps 442) is the way to go.

Good point Firmino doesn't appeal to me at all with the other options available up top , good for a draught pick maybe

Looks more of an 8.0 as striker doesn't he? The holy grail is going to be a 6.5 nailed striker who can get 15-20 goals, Charlie Austin might fit the bill but he's such an injury-risk and any dip in form brings Gabby & Long in.

Agree I really like Defoe up top with two big hitters if playing 3-4-3 but don't think budget will slow so will prob be two up top unless like you say an obvious 6.5er emerges

Went on loan to Sevilla and was doing well up until mid December then the goals & minutes completely dried up. Not sure where he'd be in the pecking order but I guess they're looking to replace JRod.

Only Llorente fitted that bill last season. At that price you have to be VERY lucky to hit on the right one, if there is one at all this year. My feeling is if your 3rd striker isn't going to be in Benteke/Defoe 8m territory, you might as well get a 4.5 benchie and invest elsewhere.

I have to agree, would prefer Coutinho any day. Coutinho and Ali look excellent value at their price points. If anything I'd say the strikers appear to be on the expensive side.

Every time I watched him play as a LW he never really played there because he was forever moving infield and adopting a more 'playmaker' role, in the area he'll funnily enough officially be playing we think next season, so probably won't see much difference. 9.0 looks very good value for a player who's still only 25 and arguably yet to reach his peak.

As I am old I just wrote out a team on paper (!) by prices

    4.5/ 4.5
    6.0/ 5.0/ 4.5/ 4.5/ 4.0
    12.0/ 10.0/ 7.0 / 5.5 / 4.5
    13.0/ 12.0 / 6.5

Knew it was a wish team but really? 103.5M? Seems Sanchez may miss out on my first draft of many.

Sorry no point to this just bored!
