Scout Notes – Europa League

A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

Rate my teams are fine in my opinion as long as you give some thoughts on potential picks and provide some actual context around the team.

The most annoying for me is people asking others to pick their sides for them. "Best midfielder for 7m and below?" or "Which defender will score the most points"?

if you are not going to even bother actually thinking for yourself and providing some options then why do people expect others to do the same?

    Two defender questions:
    1) How long is Danilo for City expected to be first choice for? Currently on Kompany but could do with the 0.5m.....
    2) Is TAA likely to be the first choice full back now Clyne is injured? How long will he be out for?

I think it's a very strong looking team.

I wouldn't back Stones and Blind.

Both will play, but will be rotated and you don't want that if you're paying that much. Also, rotation risks become even trickier when you already the risky Austin and the non starter Hune

        Cheers Sam

I almost certainly won't end up going in with Stones but I can see Blind playing at least the first few GWs at LB.

May bring in Bertrand for Stones if I stick with Dann or take a risk on Kompany/Tomkins.

    Howdy gents.

Ok for a cameo RMT/analysis. first time this season? I'm aware of the lack of depth. But I'm either WCing early, as I normally would anyway, or I won't, which would only mean this lot is working...

Foster (edge over Hart with fixtures. If we get 1st half WBA from last season, great. If not, Hart on WC in a few weeks)
Elliot (clear best 4m GK option)

Alonso (must own - coverage on both sides of the ball for probably best side in the league. Its a MID playing in your DEF.)
Trippier (bargain. Cover for best defense in PL and plenty of attacking threat)
Francis (could switch, but for now, decent opening 2 fixtures for what should be improving Cherries defense)
Long, B Smith (4m enablers, Long at least has a shot if anything happens to Mee or Tarkowski)

KdB (appears to be the safest premium mid entering the season and a focal point for Peps attack)
Alli (just a consistent, special player. First name on my sheet)
Pogba (shape of current MUN squad - I see Pogba thriving like a 10m mid)
Willian (so much value for a front 3 CHE option ans set piece specialist)
Loftus-Cheek (not gonna burn me on my bench out the gate like Capoue did last year. Gets a 3 week trial run (HUD, liv, SWA)

Kane (He's one of my own)
Jesus (no prob going heavy attack with TOT and MCI instead of ARS. LIV cover or Lukaku...though no LIV scares me the most)
McBurnie (its either him or Quaner. At least with Llorente out GW1, a shot at a 1 pt cameo :p)

No need to be sorry. It is awful. It is supposed to be awful. If all goes right, none of them will play.

Francis, as mentioned is a spot up for grabs. Thinking of a NUFC rep. The opening fixture v TOT puts many off but they have a nice long run of avoiding top sides after that.

Are you planning on starting Loftus Cheek? You have got 10 strong players and 4 bad ones (Not including Elliot in this). Maybe a more balanced 11 would be better?

i play for value. At 4.5m, if I think he is starting, RLC at worst is returning slightly below value while money is maxed out well elsewhere. I may go Carroll last minute if I think I can go long term with this side but if Im gonna WC, I like the 3 week RLC punt.

    Bottomed:

Do you guys take into account what your ML opponents are likely to do when picking your starting squad? For example, there are lots of Liverpool fans in my ML. To me this makes it more risky to go without a Liverpool player because if they score some goals in the first couple weeks I know for sure that my rivals will own one (or even two) of their attackers.

No. Use the old football adage. We concentrate on we can do then see where we are and what others have done.

    Foster
    Daniels / Trippier / Bertrand
Fabregas / Salah / De Bruyne / Zaha
    Lukaku / J Rod / Kane

    Subs T. Carroll / Rangel / Hunemeier / Elliot

    Opinions?

Is it worth switching out Zaha for a 4.5 / 5m and upgrading defence?

      Zaha to a 6m midfielder (e.g. Ritchie)
      DDG to a 4.5 goalkeeper

Use the 2mil to take that 4.5 forward to a 6.5 that'll have a chance of playing, like Austin.

Then you'll only have to pick one of Carroll, Suttner, Austin each week

    Made a few changes. Thoughts?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Lindelof Cedric Cameron (Rosenior Mee)
    KDB Salah Willian Zaha (Carroll)
    Kane Lukaku Austin

Not sure on salah now bc of rotation talk for champions league. Should I stick or twist?

      Fix the defence...

Cameron and Mee rotate for the first 10 weeks or so with gw 1 the only one that's not too good, Cedric has amazing fixtures and Lindelof is part of a good Man U defence. He is a risk but mourinho clearly doesn't like the other options

I'm punting on Austin myself, but there is also the option of having 2 big strikers and use funds elsewhere.
Last season third striker was a nightmare. Would be all over Chicharito if it wasn't for 3 away games to start with

Though West Ham were pretty poor at home last season - away run of fixtures may take a bit of pressure off?
