Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

A single match remains in Gameweek 2, but we’re already looking forward to the weekend as we browse the key players likely to make an impact in our latest Captain Poll, which is now open.

A tussle between two heavyweight strikers, one with exceptional form and another who has struggled to find the net, is set to be the main battle among our armband options.

With a third goal in two appearances, as Manchester United registered a second successive 4-0 victory last weekend, Romelu Lukaku (11.6) looks on course to once again dominate proceedings.

The runaway leader of our last two polls is owned by 55.3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and has another favourable encounter when Leicester City drop by Old Trafford on Saturday. While the Foxes kept a clean sheet against newly promoted Brighton at the weekend, their 4-3 away loss in Gameweek 1 to Arsenal may give a better indication of how their defence will fare.

Indeed, they have now conceded at least two goals in five of their seven away matches with Craig Shakespeare in charge.

Unlike Lukaku, Harry Kane (12.5) has severely tested his 30.8% ownership after two blanks in a row.

But will his impressive underlying statistics and a home tie against Burnley punish the 200,000 FPL managers who have jettisoned the Spurs talisman since the start of the season?

This may well be the case. Burnley kept just two clean sheets on the road in 2016/17 and Kane has had more shots than any other Premier League player so far. It would be no surprise to see the England striker break his August goal drought against the Clarets.

There’s also an impressive cast list of co-stars to garner interest.

Paul Pogba (8.1) – now FPL’s joint-highest points scorer with two goals and as many assists – is another strong Manchester United option, as is Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.1), who is just two points behind his French colleague’s 23-point tally, courtesy of four assists.

More than 161,000 FPL managers have brought in Pogba since Saturday, while 76,000+ have recruited the Armenian.

Christian Eriksen (9.5) and Dele Alli (9.5) present highly credible Spurs alternatives to Kane, particularly the 18.8%-owned Danish playmaker, who has assisted all three of Spurs goals this season.

Alli boasts strong form in front of his own fans if Spurs can shrug off their Wembley woes, though – he bettered Eriksen by nine goals to five at home in 2016/17.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero (11.5), Gabriel Jesus (10.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.0) could lead the chasing pack as they travel to a Bournemouth side that has conceded the second highest amount of close range efforts so far.

Their backers will perhaps be holding off casting their vote until after tonight’s encounter with Everton at the Etihad.

Of the trio, De Bruyne may be the player most keenly watched for a sign he can justify his 10.0 price tag amongst increasing competition for midfield places – most notably from the red half of Manchester. More than 126,000 of his owners have already seen enough and parted company with the Belgian, who failed to find the net against Brighton in Gameweek 1 despite his four goal attempts.

Liverpool trio Roberto Firmino (8.5), Sadio Mane (9.5) and Mo Salah (9.1) will also look to profit against Arsenal’s defence at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds scored seven times in their two league matches against the Gunners last term, with Mane the only player to net on both occasions.

Having notched in Gameweek 1 and 2, the Senegal international approaches this one in fine form, while we expect Jurgen Klopp to roll out a full-strength XI for the weekend and return Salah to his front three, after he was utilised as a sub against Palace.

The only side with a worse record than Bournemouth for conceding shots in the box is Swansea City, who travel to Selhurst Park and hand Eagles striker Christian Benteke (7.9) a chance to get among the goals. But he will have to improve on his meagre tally of just four shots in two matches if he is to gather interest.

West Ham could provide two intriguing differential captaincy candidates for Gameweek 3 – midfielder Michail Antonio (7.5) and striker Javier Hernandez (7.0) – when they travel to a Newcastle United side that has shipped three without reply this season.

While the 22.2%-owned Mexican grabbed the Gameweek 2 headlines with a brace against Southampton, Antonio also impressed in his first competitive match following a lengthy injury lay-off, firing four shots, three of which were close range and on target. With a 0.2% ownership, he is among the lowest-owned players in our poll list.

The stock of Chelsea’s stars as poll contenders took a severe knock after defeat at home to Burnley in Gameweek 1, but victory over Spurs yesterday could revive their fortunes, in particular for their rampaging left wing-back Marcos Alonso (7.0). The 12.7%-owned Spaniard’s brace against the Blues’ London rivals offered a powerful reminder of why he is one of the few defenders who can be considered for the captaincy.

Similarly, his compatriot Alvaro Morata (10.0) grabbed a goal and assist on his home debut off the bench in Gameweek 1 and looks set to lead the line at the expense of Michy Batshuayi against the Toffees.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 3 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    If you somehow see yourself scrambling to try and fit Alonso into your teams then wait just for a second. I was unfortunate enough to get rid of Alonso to fund my Zaha to Mkhi move and yet I wasn't hurting at all after yesterday's haul. Here's why;

1.) Because Alonso is the most expensive defender in the game, when you need to raise money for an upgrade in your side, you will always look to him as a source of money as you can replace him with any defender you like.

This is because there are so good defensive options that are cheaper than him, while if he was a 7.0 mid, there are not many good options below that price, therefore you wouldn't downgrade him if he was a midfielder to raise funds.

2.) Chelsea will buy a LWB before the transfer window closes as they have Champions League this year. That means only one thing, rotation. For e.g. If Chelsea sign Alex Sandro then he will probably make that LWB position his or at least a lot of games will be shared. You can't be owning a 7.0 defender knowing he's a rotation risk.

3.) He isn't likely to rise in price due to his already high ownership and expensive price tag. Therefore, there is no need to scramble to get him in as he won't exceed your budget.

    4.) I know he scored 2 against Spurs but Chelsea's fixtures are dreadful still. Chelsea play;
    Everton (H)
    Leicester (A)
    Arsenal (H)
    Stoke (A)
    Man City (H)

This is their next five prem fixtures and then they will have champions league sandwiched in between a few of these fixtures.

5.) Chelsea aren't keeping clean sheets like they were last season which would worry me. Alonso isn't gonna score every week and last week he got 0 because of Chelsea's frailties at the back.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just think you could use the money better elsewhere and upgrade one of your mids too a Man Utd mid and still have a better balance to your team.
For e.g. You could have Alonso and Tadic right now, but if you downgraded Alonso, you could get Trippier and Mkhi/Pogba which I think is the better pair and would yield more points in the long run.

What do you think on the situation surrounding him?

Are you scrambling to get him in?

I'd certainly like him that's for sure but I'm not planning to rip up my team or spend hard earned points trying to get him.

The point you make about them signing another LWB is a good one, and even if they don't is it possible with the CL they would need to rest him at some point anyway given how labour intensive a role he plays.

Alonso is basicly a winger that also can get CS not too many similair options within other teams. You do have some but they are also expensif. And if you are looking for funds you have more options in the midfield like Willian -> Mooy or something.
Cheap midfielder that become bandwagons emerge more then defenders like Alonso imo

      1. FantasyFootballSprout

I'm still not convinced by Mooy. Huddersfield will crumble soon.

I'm not denying he's a great option because he is. Just people think he scored 2 goals yesterday so therefore he will score every week.

        1. Tshelby

True but that is the beaty of him being a defender he doesn't need to score to get 6 points he just needs to make sure the other teams don't. With the potential of goal scoring threat and assists makes him just a great options.

Good argument. Maybe someone should make a post about why to go for Alonso as well and then compare the 2.

I had him all last year and he was fantastic. I'm not ruling out getting him back myself either. I just think people should wait til they're on their wildcards to get him if they want and not rip up their teams to get him by taking hits.

I completely understand your post but to address each point in turn.

1.) He may be the most expensive defender but he's not an expensive player. He's arguably the most attacking defender, plays for a side which will get clean sheets, is on FKs and seems to have been working on his shooting in the summer.

2.) All the danger seems to be going though him. I can't see him being rotated. Maybe rested occasionally but if this is the case then he probably won't be subbed on and I can handle a 7.0 player being on the bench more than, say Salah at 9.0.

      3.) Fair enough

4.) He got 0 against Burnley at home and 16 against Spurs 'away'. There's no way of telling at the moment which opposition will suit him or trouble him most.

5.) The potential clean sheets are a bonus considering how attacking he is.

        3) His % change to a possible price rise has already moved by 5% in the last hr.

        5) Chel conceded vs Burnley because they had only 9 players on the pitch. The goal they conceded yesterday was scored by one of their own players.

Good points and all valid ones as well. Depends which way you look at it imo. People need to look at this discussion and decide which points outweigh each other so they can make a better an informed decision for their teams.

The question for me and this is why I brought him in for gw1 and played 4-3-3 was would I rather have Alonso and play 4-3-3 with Tom Carroll as my first sub or play 3-4-3, own Willian/Fabregas and play Zanka (or an equivalent 4.5 defender, more likely would have been someone who hasn't performed as my first choice sub)

Alonso over Willian makes infinite sense to me therefore I adopted a 4-3-3

        Thanks

I got rid last week to fund Zaha to Eriksen, so I didnt fully appreciate his wonderful goal :/

Not convinced by the point on fixtures, he certainly demonstrated that he still gets points.

I'd be genuinely shocked if Alonso doesn't rise this week.

Those fixtures don't look too bad. In the next 3 corresponding fixtures last season he got a goal and a CS against EVE, 2 goals and a CS at lei and a goal against ARS. In fact dude you've convinced me. He's essential. I'm off to get him in for a hit before he rises!

The midfield market is turgid, only Mhki and Pogba provide any kind of value between 7.0 - 9.0

I would rather have Alonso with his clean sheets, attacking threat and direct free kicks than any other midfielder (barring those two) in that price bracket.

The mistake people make is thinking of him as a defender - 343 with him is effectively 253. If we had the option of playing 2 at the back we would all take it.

He is effectively a 7.0 attacking midfielder that gets clean sheets bonuses - nuff said

I'll enjoy raking in the points while you continue to list irrelevant reasons for not getting Alonso in.

      Here's a better list:

      1. What you seem to be missing here is, Alonso is essentially a midfielder and arguably almost a winger at times.
      2. 'Defenders' like these have always excelled in FPL and he did it last season already, that is to say, he is proven quality.
      3. At 7.0, the truth is, he's quite cheap, since he has goal, assist and clean sheet potential at that price, that's hard to pass up.
      4. His PPM last season were over 5.5, that's simply amazing.
      5. Chelsea are Chelsea. As an Arsenal fan, I abhor them, but the idea that they are going to have a disaster of a season under Conte is laughable and they still aren't playing at full strength.
      6. Morata will finish a lot of the chances that Alonso provides and they know each other from the Spanish team set up. Once Morata has had time to gel at Chelsea, Alonso's stock will only rise more.
      7. Finally, I have three letters for you, ICT.

      Nuff said.

A decent 5 or Alonso? The case for the latter is strong but I can't help thinking that over a season that extra 2 in attack, managed actively, can help you get more points and add more value.

I think it's worth getting 1 of them in - I swapped Willian to Miki last week (used up my 1 ITB) and it was well worth it. Utd have got good fixtures for the next 5 GWs.

RIght, I gambled by transferring KdB to Pogba before the latter's price rise as felt he was taking up too many funds given I have big 3 up front. After Zaha to Atsu last week I now have £4m in the bank. Need to strengthen the midfield, but how?

    0 FT £4m ITB

    Foster - (Elliot)
    Daniels - Bertrand - Dawson - Mee - (Hunemeier)
Atsu - Pogba - Willian - (Carroll - Oriol Romeu)
    Kane - Jesus - Lukaku

Arsene Wenger on playing Bellerin at LWB:

"He can play there, I play him or Chamberlain there, and Chamberlain on the right looks good as well. Both of them are more right-sided players, I agree, and depending on the game I choose sometimes right and sometimes left."

Seems like Kolasinac will stick to the CB position

This sums up old Stubborn Wenger to a tee.
He has Monreal, Kola & Gibbs to play that position but no, let's play the RB there.

What are people doing with Kane this week.

It seems foolish to transfer him out before a home fixture with Burnley BUT...

    1) Spurs have lost 8 out of 11 of their games at Wembley and Burnley played really well against Chelsea. Not saying they will beat Spurs 3-2 but there's no guarantee of points.

    2) Kane has blanked two games in a row and still hasn't scored in August.

    3) For £12.5m you want guaranteed points and someone you can stick the armband on. I won't be captaining Kane until I feel confident he will score some points and I don't feel like that just now.

I'm considering selling him and JWP and bringing in Pogba and Chiquarito for a hit. Chiquarito has 2 great fixtures before I wildcard in GW4 and has some form to go on. Pogba also has good fixtures and form. Kane plays Everton away after Burnley, again no guarantee of points.

With Kane likely to drop and Pogba and Chiquarito on the up I think it's a risk I can take to better distribute my funds throughout the team.

Thoughts from Kane owners and non-Kane owners would be appreciated 🙂

They played well against Chelsea, but they also lost at home (traditionally where they are strongest) to West Brom. We can't really say what Burnley's form is at the moment, as it is too varied/unpredictable.

Kane was pretty much this unpredictable last year, we just all forgot. BUR last year was a blank, for example. That being said, I will captain him this week. And probably SWA too.

I agree. He's been unlucky not to bag a couple of goals already but 12.5 is a lot of money to get me 2 points in 2 weeks.

I'm wildcarding in GW4 so can easily get him back (possibly for cheaper) if I sell now.

I remember last season after the two blanks agaisnt Hull and some other team in December and then missing a penalty in a third fixture I sold very quickly, and then in the next game he got a hatty and was essential from that moment on... Blanking a few times doesn't mean Kane won't score insane scores very soon!

The key sentence you have written (and which others are ignoring) is "I won't be captaining Kane until I feel confident he will score some points and I don't feel like that just now."

If that's the case then he isn't worth 12.5m. Simple as that. If you won't captain him v Burnley what you actually have is a player stinking up your squad.

I'm not saying whether I agree or not about Kane, that's not the point. The point is that he can only validate his price as a captain. I removed Aguero early last season for exactly the same reason (that I didn't feel confident captaining him) and was derided on here for that at the time as well. Until I was proven right, that is.

If you don't intend to captain Kane this weekend then the move you mention has a lot to recommend it. Chicharito is actually a potential captain for GW4 (which will be a tricky week for captaincy) and both he and Pogba have fixtures to prosper in. Taking captaincy away, I'd be surprised if Pogba + Little Pea didn't outscore Kane + JWP over the next 2 weeks on plain points anyway.

In addition, you are probably looking at a TV swing of 0.3m and may well be able to bring Kane back on wildcard (if you want to) for less than 12.5m. So I think it's a sound pair of moves in that context.

        Excellent points.

I have Kane and will be captaining him as I am confident he'll produce against Burnley but I definitely see your point.

Just one question, what does "derided" mean? It sounds bad but I've never heard of it.

to laugh at someone or something in a way that shows you think they are stupid or of no value:

He derided my singing as pathetic.

This building, once derided by critics, is now a major tourist attraction.

Got it now. What a bunch of prix!

Him dropping in price doesn't matter if you're not planning to sell him.

Will be keeping unless he injured, knee jerked him out a few times last season and it was always punishing.

14 shots in 2 games says a haul is coming.

No reason to rush the changes but does this look solid?
    Daniels Danilo > Jones Trippier

No, Wouldn't rush to get either, Trippier got a knock and Jones not nailed imo.

Jones is nailed for now. Back to back dominant 4-0 wins. Jose isn't gonna chop and change his team for no reason.

Possibly but he's also a massive injury risk

I couldn't care less about my draft team and pay no attention to it, yet I'm somehow on 69 points with one to play.

My FPL team is about 90% of my waking existence, and its 39 all out.

    Woe.

    Thoughts on my WC team?

    Foster/Elliot
    Tripper/Lowe/Jones/Mee/Cedric
    Eriksen/Mkhi/DSilva/Jese/RubenLC
    Kane/Lukaku/Chicharito

Have you hit the wc button? If not then don't and not that keen on that team.

Happy (but also surprised) to see common sense has so far prevailed in the captain's poll.

I'm expecting at least a brace.

    Darmian & Austin to...

    a) Hegazi (Already own Foster) & Chicharito
    b) Jones & Mounie
    c) Just get rid of Darmian and save the FT (Austin seems like he still has high goal threat off the bench)

    Thanks

C - Maybe Jones to replace Darmian if you want to keep united. If not Trippier if confirmed fit.
