This Much We Know – Gameweek 7

Fantasy budgets are squeezed with premium defences on top and the inevitable names featuring in the Golden Boot race, but some genuine value options may just have emerged in the middle of the park. Here are my lessons learned from Gameweek 7.

Kane’s a September baby

Based on a pure comparison of Harry Kane’s underlying statistics from his first three league matches with his most recent three, you’d almost be forgiven for contemplating jettisoning the Spurs striker.

Twenty-four goal attempts have dwindled to a “meagre” 16, with only half as many shots in the box, although he has maintained his average of one big chance per game in each set of fixtures.

Of course, September Kane has outscored August Kane 11-0 in all competitions for Spurs and nobody could care less about lesser statistics when the bottom line is an in-form striker motoring towards his fourth consecutive 20-plus goal season.

Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Morata and, lest we forget, Roberto Firmino have all been dubbed “near essential” by sagacious sections of the Fantasy community at various points, including myself, but Kane undoubtedly ticks the form and fixtures boxes so comprehensively that even non-captaining owners find themselves needing a Wembley-sized sofa whenever Kane plays.

Away from home at least…

But our big-money striker plan is being torn up

Right up until last Thursday night, it seemed inevitable that we would have to juggle our squads to accommodate three big strikers at a cost of over a third of our Fantasy funds.

Three days later and we are deprived of both Aguero and Morata – in the short term at least – while Alexandre Lacazette has yet to record attacking points in back to back games.

Even Romelu Lukaku’s seven goals in seven matches are being regarded with scepticism in the face of a more challenging run of fixtures which could see Jose Mourinho’s tether his horses.

Ironically, were Aguero and Morata both to miss two matches, that would point to a neat short-term solution in Gabriel Jesus, whose curtailed minutes culminated in his spectator’s role in the Crystal Palace riot.

After all, Manchester City are averaging nearly four goals a match at home and it’s questionable whether their next pair of visitors, Stoke City and Burnley, can reduce that average significantly.

In the longer term, though, it will be fascinating to see whether we can resist the charms of three in-form heavy-hitting strikers, or whether we are can grit our teeth, steady the knees and remember that the true “value” (in terms of points per million) can still be found in midfield and, particularly, in defence.

Once, that is,  you have a decent captaincy option (spelt K-a-n-e).

So do try to keep it clean

Last week I noted that if current scoring trends continued, as many as eight players could exceed 20 goals this season, compared to just three last year.

This week, it is worth balancing that statistic with reference to the possible record-breaking defences.

Given the form of the top strikers, it may come as a surprise to learn that there have been almost twice as many clean sheets so far (55) compared to this stage last season (30).

It is, however, the usual suspects who feature highest on that list, with Huddersfield’s 4-0 defeat to Spurs warning us of their possible regression.

Manchester United’s rearguard has only been breached in one league match this season, while their City rivals have also only conceded two goals in seven games.

Arsenal were fortunate that their net only bulged four times against Liverpool in Gameweek 3, but have not conceded since.

Sead Kosalinac was overshadowed by his defensive team-mates Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal this week – having had both a potential assist and a header of his own cleared off the line – but a seven-point average score since Anfield provides more than a little comfort for his growing ownership.

Davies is peerless

The Manchester sides and Arsenal each provide defensive options in the sub-6.0 price bracket, but the current defensive king is found at the Gunners’ north London rivals, Spurs, in the form of Ben Davies.

The pain I (and 300,000 other FPL managers) felt becoming a new manager of Davies, just in time for his benching in Gameweek 5, has been replaced by the euphoria of owning the highest-scoring asset of Gameweek 7 (along with Marouane Fellani) – a fairly novel emotion so far this season for me, it must be said.

A quick look at the statistics shows that Davies’ success was no fluke.

Joint top for shots on target over the season (four) with Fantasy darling Marcos Alonso, and having created more chances (16) than any other player – the same tally as team-mate Christian Eriksen – Davies is surely in the driving seat to retain his starting position despite the possible return of Danny Rose in the near future.

Certainly, the Welshman’s owners will hope that Danny Rose forgets all about the World Cup and that Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t follow Mourinho’s unexpected lead of giving Eric Bailly a breather in the “gimme” games.

Some 18% of the FPL world suffered the pain of the Portuguese’s whims when the Ivorian centre-back was surprisingly rested against Palace, with week-long doubt Phil Jones completing the 90 minutes on his way to an easy six points.

Pep still has us worried. This is no time to start playing with our heads, Jose.

There’s some consistency from the budget midfielders

Recommending to you premium defenders and top-dollar attackers is, naturally, rather easy if only we had the benefit of operating with an unlimited budget.

True, there is merit in an 8.0 goalkeeper double act, but that 0.5m saving really doesn’t stretch as far as we would like.

Instead, if we’re searching for a couple of sub-6.5 players, the value seems very much to lie in midfield at the moment, with Abdoulaye Doucouré (5.3), Richarlison (6.1) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (5.6) all showing their potential, to a greater or lesser extent, in Gameweek 7.

In particular, Richarlison and Choupo-Moting (both with 18), trail only Mohamed Salah (21) for midfielder shots in the box and, as anyone who owns Newcastle striker Joselu knows, eventually one of those efforts is bound to go in – even if you need Joel Matip’s telescopic leg to help.

Then again there’s also that big Belgian chap, Fellaini, to consider. Or is even 4.9 too much to pay for Mourinho’s new favourite?

Is Choupo-Moting actually a good player? Or am I being mislead by his stats?

Rafael Honigstein, who'd seen him in Bundesliga, said he wasn't very good, and that keeps sticking with me.

So, everyone is selling Morata - quick, do it now so that he loses all the trigger-happy owners before the first drop. Would then slow down the second one 😉

If I still had my WC, I'd go something for something like this:

    Pope
    Monreal / Davies / Luiz / Otamendi
    Eriksen / D.Silva / Ritchie
Kane / Jesus (or Morata if fit) / Vardy

    Elliot; Mbemba, King , RLC

    Thoughts?

GW8 DS Stats and Clean Sheet Odds

Well what a rollercoaster week that was with all the various injury news!

Last week the Doosra Stat highlighted the fixtures of Everton 458DS (0-1), Spurs 420DS (4-0), Arsenal 414DS (2-0) and Man United 405DS (4-0)
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/09/25/captain-poll-gameweek-7-2/?hc_page=6#hc_comment_16582756

Looks like Everton are still in the wilderness when it comes to showing any sort of form whatsoever and failed a DS of 458. Quite a few managers including our very own Mark were in a conundrum when it came to the captaincy choice last week. Even though the DS pointed the way to Harry Kane, he and many others chose to hunt Crystal Palace and can count themselves unlucky as Lukaku was only able to score a solitary goal in a 4-0 win.

So looking forward to GW8 the DS spreadsheet gave us:
    ARS: wat 274

    WHU: bur -60
(Doosra gives a more detailed explanation of these numbers here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/16458109)

There are three stand out fixtures this week with Tottenham 620DS, Man City 481DS and Chelsea 474DS.

Clean sheet odds: Implied chance of a clean sheet
    Chelsea 1.80 56%
    Man City 1.90 53%
    Tottenham 2.0 50%
    Leicester 2.30 43%
    Southampton 2.40 42%

    Man Utd 3.75 27%
    West Brom 4.20 24%
    Newcastle 4.50 22%
    Watford 6.50 15%
    Crystal Palace 8.0 13%
    Bournemouth 15.0 7%
    Stoke 17.0 6%
    (Supplied by Betfair)

The top three DS teams appear in the top three for a clean sheet in reverse order. With the bookies Chelsea 56% (471DS) are this weeks favourites for a shut out, closely followed by Man City 53% (475DS) and Tottenham 50% (609DS).

Man City, Chelsea and Spurs assets look promising this week. Personally I won't be ignoring the DS for my captain this week, can, or will you?

"can count themselves unlucky as Lukaku was only able to score a solitary goal in a 4-0 win"

They can count themselves extremely lucky Kane didn't bag 5 IMO!

      Really interesting read, thank you.

I'm curious to know a bit more about how this spreadsheet works - is it possible you could give a break down of how Tottenham have a rating of 620 this week?

I gather from previous comments that it is based on; position, raw results, goals scored, and goals conceded. And that there is now a column for Home Indicator. It would be great to understand how the 620 is calculated from the different sections. Also, is the Home Indicator based on last season's performance at home? (ie when Spurs where at WHL).

If this can help me with my captain decision (went for Lukaku over Kane last week) that would be a huge help! Thank you.

Sadly I am just the messenger delivering the message, I can only tell you what the man himself says

"I have devised a system, which is on a separate sheet, and which calculates a rating for any team based entirely on their results, position, goals for and goals against. It does not include clean sheets, as I have not yet found a reliable common source that records these in a HOME and away format.

So this system does not differ between the attacking and defensive qualities, perceived or otherwise, of any team, other than that expressed by their position, raw results, and goals scored, and by goals conceded.

A NEW ADDITION is the last column on that sheet(Ratings Generator), which give an indication of whether a team is expected to perform better at HOME or away. The larger the figure, the more reliable is the home indicator, whereas a minus figure indicates that a team performs better away. See West Ham, which of course, I expect to change this Season!

        (H-a=X) ... ... ... BASE
        H vs a ... ... ... GW 0
        134 Arsenal 132
        194 Bournemouth 210
        162 Brighton 174
        194 Burnley 214
        221 Chelsea 244
        -11 Crystal Palace -8
        290 Everton 317
        94 Huddersfield Town 103
        212 Leicester 227
        174 Liverpool 174
        -0 Manchester City -4
        30 Manchester United 30
        39 Newcastle United 41
        -7 Southampton -6
        114 Stoke 122
        71 Swansea 88
        148 Tottenham Hotspur 173
        129 Watford 148
        143 West Bromich Albion 153
        -37 West Ham United -54"

Not sure if that helps, really sorry about your captain pick last week, I was in the same boat with a toss up between the two (even Mark's pre kick off article was beginning to sway me to Lukaku), but what kind of poster would that make me if I didn't follow my own article lol 😆

Thank you, yes I'd read that before and I was hoping for a bit more detail if possible. For instance Spurs's 173 - I presume that is last year's rating? this year they have been better away from home than at 'home'. If there's a chance to understand these numbers a bit better at some point that would be great, it seems really interesting. No worries about the Lukaku pick, it was the Captain Sensible article that persuaded me eventually, but it was a difficult choice and the more perspectives the better! Thank you

Sorry Topmarx, that's all the info I have at my disposal and yes AFAIK the 173 is Spurs' rating from last year.

Oh boy, yeah it was that Captain Sensible article that really had me doubting my choice. All week I had set the armband on Kane and then I read that and I'm like "This is coming from a top quality player, you are not. C'mon G, take the hint..."
Glad I listened to the gambler and devil in me that said I had to go with Kane, "it's what the ratings said!" 😆

i'm glad Morata's price dropped , now i can sell him and then afford to buy him back again if i so wish , problem is there is no one below 10.3 , other than Vardy who i already have , that i'd want in my team , so i might just take a speculative punt on Batshuayi for the palace game if Morata is not fit

Players with red flags need more net transfers out before they drop, so they may actually drop slower.

But they also get transferred out more when FPL managers see their red flags, so it could go either way.

Thanks I only covered half of it. Your point that red flag encourages transfers out is true but on the flip side of that the red flags needs a lot more outs. Can't remember exactly but it is as much as 2 or 3 times more.

Have two free transfers, so one of these two is likely out for Sterling this week. The other will be held until GW10 (out for Salah/Cout/Mane at that point). So, which would you keep for the next two:

    A) Ramsey (wat, eve)
    B) Mkhi (liv, hud)

Team looks fine. Seems like you're holding the 1.3m to switch Laca to Aguero when he's fit again. The only shame is you're weakening your 4th defender slot for Ramsey. I'm not sure what return Ramsey will end up giving but I'd rather take the 4.5m defender. Ward would be a great buy.

Also Yoshida is a better option than Cedric for me.

The reason for everyone's midfield troubles this season is because of the teams that carry mid ranged midfielders. Everton, West Ham, Southampton + Mahrez have not impressed offensively. This then forces teams to pay for players players like Ritchie, richarlison, Groß often making them their 3rd best midfielder.

However, if players like Ayew, Lanzini, Arnautovic, Siggy, Klaasen, Tadic, Redmond, Antonio, Zaha (coming back from injury) start to gather form....it could create a tsunami in the game. We really only need one or two of these players to start banging in the goals and grabbing assists.

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years

I would argue that Richarlison is better (fantasy-wise) than almost all of the players in your second list 😉

I hear you but I'm not totally convinced yet with Richarlison. He's a 20 year old playing in a european league for the first time. He's never had a season under his belt in europe so I don't know if he can last.

        1. Pierce34
          • 8 Years

True, fatigue may come into play as he's been playing non-stop for months now. But until then the signs are very good. Direct, attacking, can take players on, likes to shoot.

          1. Fanta sea
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 6 months ago

Problem with Richarlison is that he'll have to do alot of hard work since Watford will be playing 12 games out of 38 with 10 men pretty much behind the ball for most parts. That will not be easy for him. It's not like Jesus who plays for City so it's easy.

He definitely has decent qualities about him but it'll be useless if he can't maintain it for 38 games. That's what separates the average and best players.

            1. Pierce34
              • 8 Years
              6 years, 6 months ago

Watford do attack weaker teams, it's not like they sit back all the time. Doucoure likes to go box to box for instance. Yes, I'm not saying Richarlison is the finished article yet, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. I agree about the question marks over longevity, but I'm enjoying the points for now.

    World cup mini-league update

Spain opened up a 20-30 point lead over South America and England. Morata was a captain fail (and potential worry) but Bellerin, Monreal, Mata and Joselu (!) carried the team.

Highest scorer was South America with 64 (compared to Spain's 61) with a balanced contribution from all areas. England got 55 - Kane (C) success but practically everyone else blanked (apart from Maguire and Jones). Africa keeps falling further and further back - Salah captain fail and the highest scorer was Choupo-Moting with 5. Table looks like this:

    1. Spain 310
    2. South America 286
    3. England 277
    4. Belgium 224
    5. Austro-Germany 205
    6. France 195
    7. Ireland 178 (heroic effort to overtake Africa)
    8. Africa 165
    8= England B 165
    10. Balkans/Italy 131 (Kolasinac perma-captain!)
    11. Wales 106
    12. Netherlands 83 (don't think they have a chance to pass anyone)
    13. Scandinavia 29 (late entry)

Feeling very optimistic for next gw despite the fact that at some point before the gw begins I'll be taking a hit to do Mkhi to Sterling, not quite sure whether to watch the Spurs match or City one too.

    Fabianski
    Davies Clark Ward
    Salah Sterling Silva Brady
    (K)ane Lukaku Vardy

    Don't let me down boys!

Risk bringing in one of Zappacosta or Christensen for Dawson in a draft league, or hold?

    Thanks guys

    A or B?

A - Lacazette and Jones > Vardy and Alonso
    B - Lacazette > Jesus

    Team at the moment....

    Elliott / Krul
    Kola / Davies / Jones / Lowe / Mbemba
    Silva / Salah / Ritchie / Carroll / RLC
    Lukaku / Kane / Lacazette

My priority would be to upgrade Carroll (if playing 3-4-3) or your 4th defender (if playing 4-3-3).

I'm a big fan of Richarlison personally, but if you don't fancy him with the tough fixtures you could get a Burnley defender for Lowe and bench both your cheap mids. If that happens to be the one match in the year that Carroll gets an assist, can chalk that down to bad luck!

That's assuming you have 0 ITB. If at least 0.5 you could go Cedric, Maguire, one of those guys.

Bittersweet price rise evening for me. Silva up, Morata down. Stayed level on TV. Holding off on Morata to Jesus until 2 internationals played. I know I can afford one more Morata drop now, and still get 10.2.(got him @ 10.2).
I have £1.3m ITB and 1FT. Have i been wise?

Thanks Holmes, i guess with 1.3m ITB, that saves me from an forced extra -4 hit if Jesus then got injured. How many more times is Morata likely to drop/Jesus rise before IB over?

I'm expecting one more rise for Jesus and one more drop for Morata before deadline, things will slow down from here I guess...

Thanks Dingo, part of me wanted to take plunge last night to save 0.1, but Ive already been bitten by injury recently. My Aguero replacement was Morata, then only had 34 mins play out of him LOL. Patience is a virtue i guess (as long as we have money ITB!)

Yes of course - at 10.2 you can relax anyway. I got Morata at 10.3 but I'm still waiting until after the internationals. 1.5 ITB anyway so similar situation to you.

Kesh, Ive been thinking of A too as Ive made 0.1 on Salah and can see Phil rising tonight so was thinking of beating the price rise. The thing is i think he will score fewer points when further back on field, as the Mane/Salah/Firmino triumvirate upfront restarts (as it should, due to Sturridges failed audition on Sunday). Only reason Ive held off mate.

Cheers for the reply. I'm really torn because Coutinho has such a strong goal and assist threat as he shown in the last couple of game weeks with free kicks and longer range goals. Plus he is a differential, has the potential to rise in price and can save me 0.2M. Salah's stats are really strong though...

Being a Liverpool fan, and having had Salah since the start, I think he has earned a couple more games to show he can convert the chances. I see him Man U and Spurs as opportunities, as he will fancy his pace against Man U defence, and Spurs will want to play so chances of counter attacks. Im hoping that the goals will come back, and a higher Salah conversion rate 🙂

With regards B, I have Silva and have also contemplated sterling/sane but i feel silva much more nailed and is right up there with Jesus in the box. Id be more concerned with Sane/Sterling rotation, even with Kun out. Tough one.

I agree it is tough because you eithe have a nailed on assist provider or the more explosive Sane/Sterling who are both rotation risks...

I got Silva as an 8.3 so its a no brainer for me to give him the benefit of the doubt at the moment. Who is your front line then Kesh?

Midfield is a bit meh. Save the FT this time and do some midfield surgery next gameweek - probably by getting rid of Lukaku once Morata is fit.

I would do Mkhi to Silva myself, and pray your front line haul the points. Courtois is a decent pick for upcoming fixtures, but I would rather have the extra money to upgrade a mid myself. I have Fab.Elliot as GKs.....

                    My current team is

                    Fabianski
                    Davies / Fernandez / Kola / Mee
                    Salah / Silva / Ritchie
                    Kane / Laca / Morata

Subs: Elliot / Lascelles / RLC / Carrick

                    1FT, £1.3 ITB

    Hazard + niasse
    Ramsey+ Vardy

Cesc, its Ramsey/Vardy for me. Ramsey much more chance of points with no Ozil, and Vardy decent fixtures, and should be still on pens. Hazard still a watching brief (just) for me, and Niasse is a bit too punty, as hes relying on other poor Everton assets to help him. So RV for me, not HN

I own Ramsey and Vardy. Not 100% convinced by either but they will both score points at an affordable value.
