Dugout Discussion

Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

Tuesday evening treats us to four more fixtures, as Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham prepare for their first matches of double Gameweek 22.

The big news is that Harry Kane starts on the bench at the Liberty Stadium.

Having headed into Monday’s deadline as a doubt, the Spurs striker has been handed the Fantasy Premier League captaincy by a relatively low 24.2% of managers. However, over 121,000 also played their Triple Captain chip on Kane after he produced back-to-back hat-tricks in his previous two Gameweek appearances. They will now hope that he gets used from the bench tonight and that he can deliver big against West Ham in 48-hours time.

Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli are also among the top 13 armband picks and all start in Wales, with Fernando Llorente leading the attack against his former club. Indeed, Son was the top transfer target for Gameweek 22, acquired by 498,000+ new owners on the back of four goals and as many assists in six starts.

Despite a run of five strikes in as many matches, just 17,000 have placed their faith in West Ham’s form player, Marko Arnautovic.

Nonetheless, that output hasn’t gone unnoticed – he was brought in by over 368,000 for a Gameweek that sees him entertain West Brom at the London Stadium before making his way to Wembley later in the week. Interestingly, however, he looks to have dropped back to a support role behind the lone striker Andy Carroll.

Elsewhere, John Stones, David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling all return to the Man City XI for a plum home clash against Watford.

Aguero’s tally of 20 points in a 6-0 win over the Hornets back in Gameweek 5 remains the highest individual haul of the season. With Gabriel Jesus sidelined for a month at the very minimum, he now has the opportunity to audition for our three-man frontlines ahead of visits from both Newcastle and West Brom before the end of January.

Sterling, meanwhile, has bagged double-digit hauls in each of his last three starts to move into second place in the FPL player standings behind Mohamed Salah.

Kevin De Bruyne also starts for the hosts as he recovers from the Jason Puncheon challenge that forced him off at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Southampton and Crystal Palace square up at St Mary’s in the other Tuesday fixture.

With a goal or assist in four of the last six outings, the Eagles’ Wilfried Zaha is the form player in this one. Yet the home side will be buoyed by Saturday’s goalless draw at Old Trafford which helped them to a first clean sheet since Gameweek 9.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Jez that cross that Kane put in tonight to set up Alli was sublime.

    It would be interesting to see him play out in the wing for a while with service delivery like that.

      If he played on the wing he would still find a way to dribble to box and score himself anyway. He has done it before.

    A fair few depressed people on here from what I've read so far. Well I triple captained Kane & I'm optimistic of still scoring 100.
    Current score = 34
    Alonso = 14 after a cs & goal incl. baps
    Vertonghen = 8 after a cs incl. baps
    Ogbonna = 1
    Arnautovic = 2
    Sons = 5
    Kane = 14*3 = 42

    Total = 106 points.

    How about that for extreme optimism.

    I want Lingard. At 6.2 he is amazing value. But I can't drop Alli or Arnie, can I? Both are in form and have great fixtures ahead. Have Salah and Sterling, too. Carroll is my 5th mid.

        And Christensen, sorry didn't see you'd asked for two. Stones too much of a rotation risk, Kompany will place a lot of games. If he nails down a spot in back three then I might consider Stones, but it prevents you from getting an attacking City player.

      Forgetting injury:
      Vardy Ave 5 pts per game. Son 5 pts per game. Kun 7 pts per game 4.9 2 pts per game.

      Hardly a mob here at the moment.

      I guess it depends if you'd have to play the 4.9 at all. Not many good options at that price.

      I want Kun but may just alternate between him and Kane and keep a more balanced team.

      Given the dearth of useful 4.9 mids it's a compromise foo far for me. You are replacing a very good starter with fodder, albeit of course for a substantial upgrade up top.

      The depth of the rest of your squad is a factor.

      Logic being...

      Vardy has Chelsea so I don't expect much.
      Son is normally a 70 minute man, but now that Spurs have more options in Lamela and Wanyama he could see slightly fewer starts.

      With Jesus out. Aguero is a must I think. Liverpool next GW not so hot but you will want to captain him the following week

        I was about to get Aguero until I watched last night game. From what I saw, I somehow still preferred KDB over Kun.

        He might not be captain material as Kun though.

        Vardy + Son might outscore, imo.

    One last thing

    Not disputing the lack of Kane assist earlier, it's clearly not an assist and never has been by FPL rules.
    But!
    When you compare it to say, Rooney vs Swansea two weeks ago the game looks a bit silly.

    1. Kane cuts inside, whips a balls in to Alli in the box who takes 2 bites at the cherry to score. No Kane assist. Not disputing it, but Kane put the goal on a plate for Alli.
    2A. Rooney misses a penalty, DCL scores the rebound... Rooney gets rewarded with an assist sticking a penalty straight at the keeper.
    2B. Rooney passes to Gylfi who is about 45 yards from goal. Siggy beats his man, cuts inside and curls one from about 25-30 yards into the top corner. Rooney assist

    Just being practical about things, it's a bit ridiculous. IMO none of the above should warrant an FPL assist

    1. Ghost Gooner
      • 10 Years

      Then assists who be reduced significantly. And Rooney got deducted points for the miss anyway.

      You are right but the maths make it too complicated to take the rules further.

          Don't misunderstand me. Even though it is slight, someone cannot look at eye candy and take a decision. Rooney assist for missing a pen is ridiculous.
          I would like Kane to get an assist too but it makes things complicated. I hope you know what I mean. as soon as a decision is subjective then problems arise.

      this is why assists arent an officially recorded stat, never clear cut. Theres a lack of consistency and its also debatable what an assist is actually definded as

      1. Ghost Gooner
        • 10 Years

        Assists are officially recorded. Nothing confusing about assists (outside of fpl). A pass leading to a goal is an assist even if the scorer has plenty to do

        1. Scratch

          Not strictly true. For instance, the Kabsele OG earlier there wouldn't be an officially recorded assist afaik. Whereas KDB was rewarded with it for FPL.

          My main gripe is the rebound penalty though in gaining a point if a teammate scores the rebound. -2 for the piss and then +3 for the "assist" doesn't seem right. They could easily address that, or just make a missed penalty -3.

            A missed pen should mean the player doesn't benefit from anything that happens directly from that pen. No points for rebound goal or assist from teammate scoring.

      Yep assists are a joke in this game. Could just apply common sense to each instance. Did player x pass to player y? Did player y then score? Assist. Everything else is bullshit

      1. Ghost Gooner

        Then there would be significantly less opportunities to get points. No fun in that imo

        I don't know I might just be overthinking it while trying to find the perfect combination I am currently playing 442 so what do you think of midfield of Salah - Sterling - Son - Lingard?

      Kun and Kane offer promise for the future but will limit the mids in the minus 10 mil bracket that will reap rewards. A hard one going forward.

      I’ve been very mid heavy this year (had neither of them and cheap strikers) and I’ve just moved to having both of them. Kün without rotation risk of Jesus, in this side that’s just scoring for fun is too good to leave out. And Kane. He’s Kane.

      Kun / Kane / Salah / City mid looks optimal right now

    Were these bad transfers?

    Kan > Morata still a game to play for each of them Kane is captain
    Alli > Richarlison Allí 8 points and Rich 2 points + -4
    Son > Coutinho Son 3pts (Coutinho didn't play) -4
    Agüero > Firmino Auguro 6 points (Firminio 1pt) -4
    Loftus-Cheek > Salah neither played -4 had to do this to complete above

    Right now -16 with the transfers...
    old players would have brought me 3pts and a bench player in for Coutinho 1pt so 4pts. Puts me at -20.

    New Players so far have brought me 19 pts with Kane, All and Son all still to play.

    Had to go for it right???

    N idea who I would have captained as Kane as free for Morata.

    Is it worth a -4 bringing Aguero and Lingard in for Quaner and Alli next gw when the alternative is to bring Lingard in next gw and Aguero the week after for no points hit?

    Aguero has pool away next gw but surely a -4 is worth it when upgrading Quaner to Aguero?!

    I am currently on 31 with TC Kane, Son, Arnie, Adrian, Christensen, Morata and Alonso to go. What score do you think I could reasonably finish with? A Chelsea CS would help enormously but I can't see it happening. It will hardly be a goal-fest for Chelsea either, as they're away from home. The others may not even play.
