Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Forwards

This evening’s article in the ninth in our ongoing assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget, Mid-Price and Premium Defenders, followed by Budget, Mid-Price and Premium Midfielders, we turned our attentions to Budget Forwards the other day. Next up, then, we look at what’s on offer in the mid-price forward bracket.

Gabby Agbonlahor’s progress over the last few months of the previous campaign suggest the Villa forward may be a viable option at just 7.0. Despite playing on the left of the front three, Agbonlahor still managed to rack up nine goals and six assists after a slow start – a total of 117 points, while not overly impressive, was his highest haul since 2009/10. For those unwilling to shell out 9.0 for Christian Benteke, Agbonlahor remains a mid-price option with a double Gameweek 1 also to consider – with Arsenal and Chelsea, Liverpool, a blank Gameweek 3 and City in the opening six, though, the schedule has hardly been kind to Paul Lambert’s side. Languishing in the Villa reserves, Darren Bent, at a mere 6.5, will surely find his way onto Fantasy radars if his mooted move to Newcastle comes to fruition – Fulham are also in the hunt, with Martin Jol admitting on Sunday he is keen to bolster his forward options for the season ahead.

Coming in at 8.0, Romelu Lukaku has the potential to be a real bargain if he gets the nod as Chelsea’s main forward under Jose Mourinho. With 17 goals and seven assists in just 2,005 minutes at West Brom last term, the big Belgian proved his Premier League capabilities but with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba (and possibly Wayne Rooney) as competition, there’s no doubt his acquisition still comes with uncertainty attached right now. Having produced four goals and two assists in 135 minutes over the Blues’ pre-season friendlies, though, Lukaku has already earned plenty praise for Mourinho and, while many may prefer the security offered by the more expensive Juan Mata and Eden Hazard in midfield, there’s no doubt that Lukaku has the potential to plunder the points in double Gameweek 1 at home to Hull and Villa.

Arouna Kone’s arrival at Everton seems to bode well for his security of game time. New Toffees boss Roberto Martinez clearly has great faith in the Ivorian’s talents and moved quickly to secure his services after he produced 11 goals and five assists under the Spaniard at Wigan last term. Coming in at just 7.0, the new boy is more budget-friendly than Nikica Jelavic (7.5), though the latter’s double in the weekend win over Blackburn suggests Kone may have a fight on his hands to nail down the lone forward role. Midfielders Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar offer out of position alternatives if Martinez continues to roll out a front three.

The pricing has been kind to Dimitar Berbatov this time out. Fulham’s main man comes in at 7.5 despite scoring 15 goals and providing four assists in his debut season at the Cottage – with spot-kicks in his locker and starts undoubtedly guaranteed, the Bulgarian remains strong value this time out. The potential downside, though, is Martin Jol’s pursuit of a new forward – Berbatov may be moved into a more withdrawn role depending on the type of player his manager acquires; a little concerning, given his returns dried up when fielded in “the hole” as a result of an injury to Bryan Ruiz last term.

Liverpool new boy Iago Aspas looks an intriguing option at a mere 7.0, though the uncertainty surrounding Luis Suarez’s future has a knock-on effect on his potential. With Philippe Coutinho first-choice for the left flank berth, many feel Aspas will be handed the slot on the opposite wing, with Suarez tucking in behind Daniel Sturridge in a 4-2-3-1 but the Spaniard is more than capable of taking up a central position, having produced 12 goals and seven assists as the lone striker for Celta Vigo last season.

A move away for Suarez would be significant and could see Aspas positioned in the middle of the park, with the likes of Luis Alberto, Stewart Downing and Fabio Borini vying for the right flank role. With Suarez suspended for Liverpool’s opening six matches and Sturridge yet to return to pre-season training, Aspas could yet start the campaign as the Reds lone frontman as he looks to continue the form that has seen him already notched three times through the middle this pre-season.

The recent double arrival of Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic looked to signal the beginning of the end for Edin Dzeko but the Bosnian has risen to the challenge, netting the winner in each of City’s last two matches. Having earned the praise of Manuel Pellegrini on the back of his performances, it seems that Dzeko will still earn game time but with Sergio Aguero also in the mix, the former’s lack of guaranteed starts from one game to the next will surely be enough to deter much investment, in spite of a 7.5 price tag.

Both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck have been handed a 7.5 price tag but despite the change of manager at Old Trafford, in addition to the potential departure of Wayne Rooney, their game time looks limited unless David Moyes opts for a front two. Should Moyes roll out his preferred lone striker system, the duo will remain firmly behind Robin Van Persie in the pecking order; with a reliance on minutes off the bench and the occasional start, neither player appeals in the present situation.

Yoan Gouffran was utilised in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 and out wide up top in a 4-3-3 for Newcastle last time out. Despite being fielded through the middle in pre-season due to Papiss Cisse’s ongoing dispute with the club, the Frenchman is expected to revert to one of the aforementioned positions in the upcoming campaign – a security of starts may be likely but the 6.5 priced Gouffran should struggle for goals from a more withdrawn berth.

Norwich’s summer acquisitions,Gary Hooper and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, come in at 6.5 and 7.0 respectively. Bearing in mind Chris Hughton has splashed out over £13m on the pair, their arrival certainly hints at a change in formation this term as the Canaries boss puts greater emphasis on attack and moves from last season’s 4-4-1-1 to a 4-4-2 in order to address the lack of attacking threat that harvested just 41 goals in his first year at the helm. With home games against Everton, Southampton and Villa, in addition to a trip to Hull, the Carrow Road club have a kind opening run of matches, with the creativity of Robert Snodgrass (6.5) offering us a real alternative in midfield as the Scot looks to better last term’s 152 point haul in his debut campaign.

Rickie Lambert remains favourably priced at Southampton. Having racked up 15 goals, eight assists and 32 bonus points in his first season in the top-flight, Lambert finished third top scoring forward on 187 points – in spite of his previous endeavours, he will take up just 7.5 of your budget and looks nailed-on, though his owners will be monitoring the club’s reported interest in Brazilian Leandro Damiao. Jay Rodriguez offers a cheaper route (6.0) into the Saints forward line and certainly came into form under Mauricio Pochettino in the second half of the season but with spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces also in his locker, Lambert makes a persuasive case for his potential inclusion on our three man frontlines. Given that the Saints’ first seven home games are against Sunderland, West Ham, Palace, Swansea, Fulham, Hull and Villa, plenty are expected to invest in their attack from the off.

Sunderland pair Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore will set you back 7.5 and 7.0 respectively. Recent report now suggest Fletcher may be set to miss the start of the new season as he continues to recuperate from the ankle injury that ended his previous campaign early – if he fails to return until September, new boys looks set to lead the line for the season opener, with Paolo Di Canio operating a 4-4-1-1 until Fletcher is fully fit. Certainly, having managed double figure goal returns in all three of his seasons in the Premier League, the Scot’s eye for goal could come to the fore once again upon his return, while Altidore arrives on the back of a season which harvested 31 goals and seven assists in 39 domestic matches for Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. The new boy certainly seems to have progressed from the player that struggled on loan at Hull in 2009/10 but with Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs arriving at the Stadium of Light between Gameweeks 4-15, many will be giving the Black Cats a wide berth to begin with.

Similar to Altidore, Wilfried Bony racked up the goals with regularity in the Eredivisie last year. The new Swansea forward found the net 31 times and also supplied eight assists in just 30 league matches and looks virtually nailed-on as the lone forward for Michael Laudrup’s side – at 8.0 he’s kinder on the budget than Michu (9.0) in midfield and may even be handed spot-kicks. With United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal in the opening six Gameweeks, though, there are surely better options to shop for in terms of the schedule.

A mere five goals in 25 appearances highlights the Fantasy impact of Emmanuel Adebayor (8.0) in the season gone by. Having racked up 194 in 2011/12, the Togo international stuttered to a mere 72 points after making his loan move to the Lane a permanent one – while he still looks ahead of Jermaine Defoe in the pecking order for the lone forward role, Adebayor will surely be resigned to a sub role if Andre Villas-Boas manages to acquire Roberto Soldado from Valencia.

At 6.5, Shane Long is the priciest option on offer amongst West Brom’s forwards after producing eight goals and six assists in 2012/13. The Baggies entertain Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland in the first five and also travel to Fulham – a kind run of fixtures, no doubt, but with Nicolas Anelka priced at a mere 5.5, Long looks set to be overlooked by many due to the Frenchman’s more budget-friendly cost.

Finally, West Ham’s Andy Carroll is another who looks guaranteed for starts – providing he’s injury-free. Coming in at 7.5, Carroll has been handed an outstanding opening six fixtures (CAR, new, STO, sot, EVE, hul) and, after a slow start for Sam Allardyce’s side last term, picked up in performance over the last couple of months. If Carroll can recover from a heel problem in time, he could be quick out the blocks in light of such a favourable schedule but with question marks remaining over his fitness, Kevin Nolan offers a cheaper alternative (7.0) in the Hammers midfield for those looking to capitalise on the Hammers early schedule.

    Wanyama - Hazard - Mata - Fernandinho

    Aspas - Bony - Anelka

    - How's this for starters? Are my strikers too light?

Wanyama & Fernandinho are Defensive mids, not sure if they are good FPL prospects even with the new Bonus System.

Gibbs is not nailed on + injury prone, get mert instead.

Your strikers are pretty light but decent differentials imo.

do have something in the bank? feels a bit like it. Not a fan of Fernandinho, he might have a couple of goals in him but he´s a DM, not sure his an ideal city coverage. If monreal is fi, gibbs might not play.

Shaw is on my squad as well at 4.5 and Gabb is 4.0

Paulinho is supposed to be more forward for Tot, so I might put him in place of Fernandinho. That would give me an extra 1.0 to spend elsewhere.

Wanyama is such a value. Not sure who else is decent value for my backup midfielder.

Its good advice to stay away from defensive midfielders. A defensive midfielder from a top club will be outscored by the more advanced players of smaller clubs. Snodgrass, mirallas, ramirez (sou) are popular picks in this page

Crystal Palace are supposed to be strong striking force this season. They were top league scorers and are buying more even more force up front so it might be worth investing in a midfield punt. I prefer Thomas, myself.

Coming to the conclusion that Benteke not worth it for the DGW Having four DGW players will just lead to point hits and problems down the line . Even if he scores and gets eight points over the two games it debatable whether it will be worth it.

If we have 4 DGW players then we'll "expect a bare minimum" of 16 points, right?
      (4 players x 2pt per match)

When we transfer each of these 4 players out over the following 2GWs then we'll accrue an -8pt hit.
      (-4pt hit x 2)

This nets us an 8pt gain without taking into account what they & their replacements garner us in offensive returns throughout.

Am I missing something rather obvious here?

You didn't take into account the possible failure of other players. We could be stuck with these transfer plans (as we don't want to waste money on the bench during the GW3 blank) and other non-performing players who may go down in value.

Right, however I still have another 8pts to play with here even if I have to make 6 transfers total?

All of this not taking into account our captains points & any offensive returns from the CHE v. HUL & AVL matches we'll receive.

Further, if we're assessing risk here what are the 'real' chances that we lose more than one player before GW 3?

Kyle, look at my post below. You are comparing 16pts for DGW to 0pts in your head, when you should be comparing it to 8pts, because if you have a normal player instead of DGW player, you will still get 2pts from them for playing.

No need for all this complicated mumbo jumbo about potential offensive gains or potential losses from bad players.

              this is true.

No harm if people are confident of having 4 DGW players, but make sure you don't transfer them out too early as you'll end up breaking even. The big challenge is, as we know, that CHE has mun next and blank in GW3. Big risk, but not sure of big reward.

DGW players get 16pts, but normal players get 8pts. Therefore, the net gain is actually 8pts. Subract 8pts for your two transfers... and you break even.

          True!

So, we have to net offensive returns in order to make this a correct decision.
(*We haven't taken our captains double pts into account either...)

Well, I believe if we ran this 100 times over I'm thinking we come out on top 80%+.

I agree. However, there is a tipping point where you weigh the cost of # transfers out vs. point returns and you start losing points... I couldn't tell you exactly where it is, but it is somewhere between 2-4 DGW players.

Naturally, the bigger the attacking the returns, the higher on the sliding scale it would be.

What about 'normal' players that score more than just two points? This is my dilemma, especially with Benteke.

If I bring in Sturridge he may outscore Benteke, but he will also save me from that 4 point hit.

I just don't see it... I just don't see how we can pass up a clear cut advantage to play as may CHE players home to HUL & AVL as we can?

Sure, some of our other players could get a RC but, realistically 'Chicken Little' is the sky truly falling?
On its face, this is an unrealistic fantasy doomsday scenario.

Ok, so let's just imagine it does all blow up...
We need to transfer out 5 players!
Is spending 8-12pts on transfers by GW3 a complete disaster to then bring in nailed on players from in form sides?
                    I say no, clearly not.

Meh, on the whole it's a tiny risk we should be willing to take to ensure we maximize the points we recieve from the most favourable fixtures avaiable.

You might not see it, but others do. I for one am going 3 Chelsea with the intention of transferring out 2 of them before the blank gameweek. You are just a higher risk taker than the others who responded with disagreement, including myself.

You may come out on top, you may not, but its a gamble and the odds are even once you exceed 3 DGW players due to the transfers, that's all people are saying. I prefer to save my WC for later in the season (snowmageddon's specifically, because the differentials become massive) Remember, this is football, anything can happen. What if your primary goalkeeper gets a red card? Or your top striker? What about injuries or old fashioned squad rotation, it is the start of the season and you can't predict that very well right now. If you are trying to get people to agree that Benteke is a good idea, which it sounds like you are, then your going about this wrong. You need to decide for yourself whether it's a good idea or not and then make your case. For me, I see ARS and CHE with very strong D and Villa was a relegation team. ARS, CHE, blank does not appeal to me with Villa players. There will be time later in the season. Remember as well, the international break follows GW 2, which means price drops can be intense from GW 2 to GW 4. Benteke at 9.0 at the start of the season or Benteke at 8.5 or 8.6 when his fixtures improve. I think I'll take the latter.

Very simply, I am going to play 4 DGW players.
I except them to net me a bare minimum of 20pts.
                        (4+4+4+8 for my captain)
*Note, this is not taking into account an offensive returns they will accrue.

Following this, I expect to make 4 transfers in the following weeks resulting in an -8pt hit.
                        20 - 8 = 12

Now, even if another 3 players die & I'm forced into making more transfers, I'll still expect this to net me a decent return.

Frankly, I see little risk & ask again how can we not make this play?

Ah yes, I forgot its football & anything can happen...

I have a suspicion that Palace are going to be great for FPL this team in terms of attacking force but with Man U coming up shortly it's probably a wait and see. You can definitely grab Gayle later on if he begins to storm but currently Thomas and Gayle are unecessary and double Chelsea is too. I'd keep Ivon for the explosion (though I currently don't know his role and realize Cole is nailed on) and upgrade Gayle for now.

Palace are good for balancing the squad, and they are likely to outscore the other promoted teams. So one Palace is fair enough, so long as he has a rotating player too.

Hazard and Luke are great choice atm. I'm also going with Foster and upgrading to Migs later as West Brom have decent fixures. It's easy change and can free up .5 to bring in Hazard over Silva or Gerrard. Come GW2 you can downgrade to where you see fit then. I'd definitely consider finding Walcott or Giroud as Arsenal are pretty well oiled now and you'll probably see returns before Champions then during (depending if Wenger, whom I love/hate very much, can see about spending some of his 80 million).

Just followed a recent link post and have been sat in the wrong article wondering why nobody was there, apart from a couple of no gravs licking each other's teams. Very odd.

Anyway.........anyone considering Matty Fryatt in their rotation?

$4.5m, was a proven goal scorer until his injury, getting match fit again.

Could be this year's Le Fondre coming off the bench when Graham and Hull's new carthorse fail to score, and nipping the odd goal here and there.

Being a City season pass holder I wouldn't touch the forwards.

    I have a big problem.

I think both Snoddy (EVE, hul, SOT) and Nolan (CAR, new, STO) will score good points in the first 3 GWs and will rise in value. At the same time, i think Walcott, Hazard and Coutinho are almost indispensable and i also like the look of them in my team.

    Should i

    A. get all of them and play 3-5-2 early in the season (which is not a popular move by most people here, i know).

    B. drop one of Snoddy and Nolan. If so, which one?

Yep, their fixtures are too good to be ignored.

My problem is that i think Wally, Hazard and Coutinho's extra millions over G-ru, Lukaku & Aspas are justified, given the security and explosiveness of these big players, and their fixtures are not that bad either.

I agree. The problem is though if Olivier, Luk and Aspas do start then the cat will be thrown amongst the pigeons!

Cheaper and more advanced roles, greater differentials.

Giroud although notoriously dodgy at times in front of goal could surprise many if Arsenal sign no one...

Saying that though Pod could take his role but he seems to gas out easily or maybe Wenger just isn't too impressed with him.

The heavy hitters look to be midfielders this year. With Suarez suspended and possibly transfered. Aguero´s mediocre second season. Chelsea´s uncertainty upfront. Arsenal relaying at giroud at the moment. And Spurs with Adebayor as their "best" stiker for now. Only RVP looks certain of a great season from top clubs. Also Carroll and sturridge injured. Benteke with horrendous fixtures. Almost looks like the mid priced strikers are the way to go (lambert, jrod, berba, RVW, aspas, kone etc.)

I think its a good strategy this year to go with 5 midfielders.

Yeah, if Bale leaves I'm most definitely bringing in Coutinho. I think he could romp on Stoke. I have Walcott and Hazard as my other mids. I'm even contemplating leaving Walcott out just for the first week. It's such a tough decision :/ I'll never be satisfied, but all of those big hitters that you mentioned, I feel they're hard to go without.

I have a good feeling about Snodgrass too. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm willing to invest in Jarvis for West Ham attack, so I'd say you can do without Nolan.

After reading countless RMTs it's difficult to not just say here's your weak points here's who needs to go in there (but I will help where possible).

Simple questions I would give for you to use with each player:
    Will they play?
    How are there fixtures?
Are they proven in the FPL?
    Are they worth their price?

Pre season form needs to be taken with a pinch of salt (read: Boselli).

Punts are fine in moderation (read: Michu) though otherwise we'd all have the same team.

The more debateable areas have to be such spots as Sturr/Aspas, Mata/Haz, Zab/Nasty, Pacecott/Santi Clauzorla etc etc (areas that are much more interesting to explore rather than explain to a newbie than why there are multiple better options from the Gunners than Arteta in FPL terms!).

Just my two cents before people stampede in with RMTs (a little too late I know).

In the words of Damien Sandow:

    You're welcome. 😀

Preseason form need to taken with a pinch of salt especially when the player is new to the league/level and is doing really well. Preseason is like a dirt-tracker tour to sell a few jersies usually against poor opposition.

However if the player is doing absolutely shite in preseason and has no known previous form they're best avoided 😉

I'd argue that the proven FPL player doesn't necessarily apply to new overseas signings. But I understand your point on being careful in that regard.

Will they play? Is 90% certain good enough? it gets a bit grey but I'm guessing we all need to have a sense as to where the line is.

Are they worth the price? Is RVP worth it? most would say no but he still brings home the points. sometimes such luxury players are worth it as there is often cheaper value players who score just as well or nearly as well as some of the big hitters.

Fixtures is probably the best rule in all of that and the ticker is a great tool to help sort this out. With no form to go by we can only rely on fixtures as a concrete rule at this stage.

Worth a punt.. classy youngster.. I would be benching my 4.5 million MF player anyway as I will be playing 3-4-3

He may be a hit waiting to happen but I have a good feeling about him and Martinez rates him...

    Just another RMT.

    Mignolet / Lewis
    Terry / Chester / Turner / Turner / Collins
    Hazard / Coutinho / Snodgrass / Bale / Kim
    Giroud / Rodriguez / Lukaku

    3 Million in the bank

The plan is to get Aguero/Negredo for Lukaku in GW2. And then Terry to Kompany/Zab in GW3. How's this looking for now? I know United may still ruin my plan, but still..

Terry might not play. spend the extra .5 on Cashley/Luiz/Ivan. I may be wrong, though.

The rest is good, although i still think Lambo is worth the extra 1.5 than JRod.

        Budget constraint. 😛

Well, about Terry, I am very hopeful to say the least. I do think Luiz will nail down one of the 2 CBs spot. But the only thing that makes me think Terry might regularly feature, at least for the first few games, is Mourinho's comments on Ivanovic. He thinks of him as a RB and not as a CB. And Terry, if given minutes, can return a lot of goals.

I am not, I wouldn't advice you to get Terry too cause its a punt. If you are looking to get nailed on players and be safe, then look no further than Cole. I am just having Terry because his conversion rate is too good and if he starts both the games, I am sure there will be something in there for him. Again, he might be benched and it may be a failed punt..

I will be all over Giroud if Arsenal dont buy a striker.

17 goals and 10 assists in all comps last year with being rotated all season. Only going to look up from here. He was unlucky with blocks and great saves and poor finishing last year due to poor confidence. A few more of those in he would have been a 20 goal striker (with 10 assists).

This pre season his confidence is up and i fully expect him to have a good year.

Probably Giroud as there seems to be more options in Midfield than strikers at this stage. And only if arsenal dont sign a striker.

Not many strikers i like atm. Alot of the top teams have strong rotation risks attached.

    RVP with Balance?

    Boruc (Mannone)

    Ivanovic, Toure, Coleman (Collins, Turner)

    Walcott, Silva, Hazard, Jarvis (Thomas)

    RVP, Lukaku, Rodriguez

*Plan is to go Ivanovic down to Dawson (or other 5.0) and go Lukaku to Giroud and Jarvis to Snodgrass / Zaha ( cheapy with form)

    What do you think?

That'd still mean that you'd need a GK of minimum 4.5 with Cech. That's 11 million in that position alone. And it'd be a waste if you kept the 4.5-er on the bench all the time.

Trades at the start of the year are at a premium to chase price rises. I dont like the idea of having trades plans this early because its just gonna lead to hits.

I've reworked my team to make it a bit more 'safe' without any pressing trades in GW2 or 3.

With no Bale and RVP you lack an obvious C option but you make up for it with great squad depth and quality.

Probably too much money in defence. Downgrade one of them to a 4.0 and maybe use th 0.5 or so to upgrade or save for future transfers. Your 5th defender shouldn't get on the park very often, especially with 3 already solid options.

Anyone do a Brady vs Koren comparison yet? want one of them but not sure which one. May go for Campana instead as a punt if not clear
