The Community Round Up

The Fantasy Premier League launch is looming, as the Fantasy Football Scout community eagerly look back at previous seasons to deduce the likely launch date. Ahead of the big day, our community writers and posters have cast an eye over the potential heavy-hitters, budget options and rotation strategies for the next campaign.

We look back at their efforts, whilst dropping in on our resident Sky Sports Fantasy game expert, who has been offering his tips for success following the launch this time last week. Not surprisingly, we also round off the community’s World Cup reactions and congratulate the winners across the various community competitions based on the tournament.

The Community Submissions

Earlier in the week, we asked for your votes for the best community article during the month of June. There was plenty of excellent articles to choose from but we’re delighted to announce that Portsmouth Bubblejet’s detailed look at Premier League Home and Away rotation stood out and claimed our community article of the month prize of a £20 Amazon gift voucher. Well done to the Pompey printer hybrid.

To be in with a chance of winning July’s prize, you can submit your article for consideration here. The Sarjeant’s detailed look at how players coming up with promoted sides are set to perform under the Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System is already an early contender..

The Boose13 was another community writer active this week, he’s looked ahead to the new Premier League campaign, with this assessment of Tottenham’s prospects. It includes some pretty forthright opinions on Spurs’ transfer activity prior to the last campaign.

Meanwhile, Balotelli’s Bib and Innsie continued to focus on the final matches of the World Cup and a big thanks must go out to them for their efforts over the course of the tournament.

Balotelli’s Bib rounded off his lessons learnt series, before steering us through the final two matches with a look back at the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Innsie’s helped out Fox managers with his guide to the available players for the semi-finals and beyond.

The Hottest Topics

With the World Cup giving way to another domestic season, the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) start date was already dominating our thoughts. According to The Sarjeant’s look at previous FPL launch dates, he reckoned that we’re a just a days away from getting stuck in. Daniel was another to predict an imminent launch, having also studied previous season’s dates.

The raft of newcomers to the Premier League are already tempting some, even before the FPL player list is revealed. Archie, however, urged caution when picking new faces, reminding the community of Wigan’s misfiring Italian hopeful Mauro Boselli, a notorious name around the community, who promised so much and delivered so little.

There’s no such pessimism surrounding Arsenal’s new stellar recruit, Alexis Sanchez. In Heydudes13’s discussion on where the Chilean forward will fit into the London side’s lineup, the consensus is he will shine as either a central striker or a winger. We’re now just waiting on that all important price tag.

Our options up front are, of course, plentiful, as explored in our discussion on the potentially pricey FPL prospects. With fixtures in his favour, Robin van Persie will be in big demand from the off, while Luis Suarez’s departure has made Daniel Sturridge an obvious early target. There are sceptics amongst you, however, with Baines on Toast stating that Van Persie may have lost his mojo and may not be the points machine of old. Fitness concerns worry him in this hot topic where he also reveals that Wayne Rooney could be an overlooked gem.

Whilst big money will doubtless be spent in our forward lines, Christina was mulling over potential FPL third striker options, with Hull’s Nikica Jelavic among those in the sights.

Among the burning questions we’ll all be pondering when FPL launches is whether to opt for one pricey keeper or go for a pair of rotating shot stoppers. Lionel’s Messy Boxers explored some of the best rotations available, with Burnley’s keeper and his counterpart at either Hull or Crystal Palace, emerging as one of the favoured options.

No discussion about the FPL would be complete without dreaming up some potential rule changes. This week EdenoftheEast wondered whether it was time to consider a mid-season re-classification to tweak players who have emerged as being out of position. Those interested in drafting in Tottenham’s full-back Danny Rose, who spent last season classified as a midfielder, will certainly be among those hoping such a rule change is considered. For Carrick Deserves More Mata, more points for slick midfield passers tops his list of rule tinkering.

The final FPL related hot topic in our round-up takes a look back at the past, as Innsie asked the community to recount their track record in the game, including highest rank, years played, as well as aspirations for next season.

There’s been a slightly shorter wait for those playing the Sky Sports Fantasy game, which has already launched. At first glance the pricing looks tough but luckily our resident expert D1sable set up his advice surgery earlier this week to help us search out some bargains, allowing us to focus on acquiring the heavy hitters.

Finally, last weekend saw some of the Fantasy Football Scout team attend our annual get-together in London. For those who want to see what the likes of Applebonkers, Evs and FPL winner Tom Fenley look like during a night out in London there’s a link here.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Football Scout community dominated the final leader board of the Fox game, with 17 of our league members in the top 50 overall rankings.  The winner of our league was Alba Esque, who finished  seventh overall. Meanwhile, Arvin Velu topped the Fox FFS Deadzone league and Spencer won the FFS moderators and contributors league.

Frip69 not only topped the Scout League in the McDonald’s backed Official World Cup game: he also finished first in the overall ranks. Congratulations on an excellent effort.

The winners of the  FFS UEFA World Cup team competition, which is using the Official FIFA Fantasy game, were Nigeria. Full details can be found here.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who organize FFS UEFA WC Tournament, and Group B hots Bonz, you guys are amazing. Kudos for all who took part in it and made it a real fun, it was truly a great experience for me. Looking forward to the next time.

To my teammates and manager, you guys are simply the best. It's been an incredible journey. Saniul, like HVT said, should be knighted 😀 May the brighter days of the Netherlands and us come soon!

I totally disagree, looking at his 'stats' utterly abysmal... His petulance over this move suggests he's in it for the money only, I stated last week when initially announced, appears to be the Nicholas Bentdner of the Championship

I assure you he's not the type to be "in it for the money"

His stats aren't great for a striker but he works bloody hard for the team and will supply Ings in Vokes absence.

I can only go on what I've read... But I dont think (unless he's been told) he'll be starting in Voke's absence, think we'll stick Wallace or possibly Kightly in behind Ings going with a 4-1-3-1-1 formation

I completely concur with what you're saying... It's more about the amount of money being spent on someone we don't need, we're in desperate need of a centre back, DMF & another attacking mid...

I hope I'm proved wrong..... Dyche isn't an idiot & clearly (as you state) has plans to play in our successful 4-4-2 system... But this is the Premier league

Simple observation. Before launching the new season, they need to bring the application down.
So until you see that maintenance page up, I'd say no chance the new season will open.

On a different note, I hope they will create separate set of prices for FPL and UFPL, otherwise it is going to be really difficult for them to find the right balance in prices for 15 players with a budget of 100 and for 25 players with a budget of 160 (if i remember exactly)

    Open Controls

The maintenance page has already been up though so they might only have to finalise one or two things before launching, or maybe its already ready and they're just running some final testing on it.
They could throw up the maintenance page for 5 minutes and then launch the game..

Very good point regarding the price differences.. How did it work last year for the trial run?

Duplicate the prices at the time the game launched. I mean it depends, last season you just had to find a lot of potential points from bench fodder and risk it. I can see them implementing the same this time around.

From what I remember of the rules that were visible at the start of UFPL: The starting prices are the same, and the price rises/falls were based on FPL transfers, but the price change was halved, so a player had to rise .2 in FPL to see a prise of 0.1 in UFPL

This is probably old news here, just took me a while to digest, but did Rihanna just truly epitomize the glory hunter during this World Cup:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2681613/Topless-Rihanna-turns-World-Cup-superfan-mocks-picture-niece-holding-Brazil-flag.html

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2690765/Rihanna-dresses-black-shoulder-mini-shows-supporting-World-Cup-final-posts-swimsuit-shot-German-boys.html

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/worldcup2014/article-2690906/Rihanna-celebrates-Germanys-World-Cup-win-against-Argentina-stands-revealing-photos.html

    And finally this tweet:

"I touched the cup, held the cup, kissed the cup, took a selfie wit the cup!!! I meeeaan...... what is YO bucket list looking like bruh?"

Just to affirm that it was all about that World Cup glory. If Palacios had scored one of those chances, I'm sure she would have changed her twitter picture immediately to albiceleste colours and tweeted a pic of her dog with a rat tail hair-do.

I don't know. I don't listen to that pop music they dare to call R 'n' B these days, nor do I follow what those people do. So maybe that's why this was shocking to me.

Maybe I should have expected that. I, too, have seen a video of her, and yes, I know, she makes her living by posing (semi-)naked, looking sexy and screwable. So maybe I should not be surprised that she repeated that act to get to kiss the Cup.

I mean, seriously, what did she do to get to touch that Cup? What was her special contribution? She gave "to her German Boyz" a picture of herself wearing those colours. A picture sexually objectifying herself!!! That's it? That's what she does in world? Sells her body to get to places? Well done, Rihanna, what a...

And excuse me, "her boyz"??? Does that skank have anything to do with Germany?

I don't do bets, but I think this is worth noting...

Khedira at 1/10 to join Arsenal at Sky Bet….
    Vidal to Man Utd 1/12
Cavani to ManU 7/4…to Pool 3/1
    Lovren to Pool 1/5
    Benzema to Arsenal 7/4
    Hummels to ManU 8/11

Forced a move to Toulouse from Saint-Étienne, a club with great history and essentially same sportive level with Toulouse, after Saint-Étienne had refused to multiply his salary by 5. For a striker who had at best scored 8 league goals, that kind of pay rise didn't sound appropriate. Not to most of us, at least.

He ended up getting 6,5 times as much in Toulouse one 8-goal season later, and just two seasons and only 9 goals later, he moved to Monaco to get even better pay despite knowing he will be backup for Falcao.

Well, he was already a backup for Ben Yedder in Toulouse, so not a big difference.

Don't forget he was injured for a very long time which affected his time in Toulouse. An injury that he dragged to Monaco too. When he signed for Monaco, he signed for a Ligue 2 team and had no idea Monaco would go up or that Falcao would come.

9 goals in 44 matches is crap, regardless.

Okay, you're right about this, he would not know that Falcao would come to the club. Of course he expected to be the no. 1 striker, and actually he lost that place to Germain first.

Which also corrects the point that Germain did not lose the starting spot because of the arrival of Rivière. just that Rivière got ahead of him when Germain was injured.

But that he is a mercenary, this just further affirms, as he again, took a lesser sportive club (lower division) for getting better salary. Maybe there's an argument that he went to lower level to get game time as he was on bench for Toulouse in his last season, after emergence of Ben Yedder. But that was also because he was quite lousy on field, amongst those players that Casanova criticized comparing their level of effort to that of the youngsters like Regattin and Ben Yedder.

Yes. Berbatov, the striker who 3-4 offside goals and then one beauty and gets a legendary status. They will also need a striker who can run. They will have two of those, though, in Martial and Germain.

Germain, a product of Monaco's surprisingly good academy, has been the sympathetic story in that money club. He captained them to Ligue 2 victory to get them back to Ligue 1, also being their top scorer and assister, but got injured before the start of the last season and as Falcao and Rivière were bought, he was told by Ranieri that he would do better by searching a new club. he stayed, and as Falcao and Riviere were first not so good and then picked injuries, he got his chance, played well, scored important goals and won back his starting place.

No doubt they'll sell him now, but they shouldn't. Falcao I would sell in a blink of an eye if anybody offered decent buck. I mean, he is not bad, but for all the hype and the money they pay to him, he should be great.

Monaco won games last year thanks to their individualities and poor level of Ligue 1. They are incapable of playing well in a team like PSG. Ranieri did his part of the job, he got them back into Champions League, now they need someone to make them play together as a team in order to perform in Champions League and rival PSG: Jardim was the man.

Excuse me? Their best scorer was Rivière with 10 goals. For large part of the season they played with Martel-Germain upfront, neither had any previous top level experience.

Falcao and Moutinho, the expected big names, both failed to shine in Ligue 1. Decent players, but nothing spectacular, easy to defend against. Falcao has nothing else but his finishing in him, and seemed to be quite easy for the Ligue 1 defenders to mark. Some of them even commented that they were surprised how easy he is to play against. I think he only scored 4 or 5 open play goals. Or something like that.

James Rodriguez stood out, but all in all, their game was based on disciplined team play, top performers being defenders and DM's, particularly Toulalan.

And Jardim the one to do it in CL? He crashed out from a group that Olympiakos advanced from. That really doesn't shout that he's the man to get them perform in CL. I may have exaggerated Ranieri being a great manager, but sure he has more merits than Jardim.

By incapable of playing as a team, I meant not playing any sort of fancy, attractive, attacking football like PSG is capable of. As you said, they often played defensively relying on Subasic, Carvalho and Toulalan to perform. There is no way that Monaco will perform in CL by doing this.
Up front they relied on their individualities such as Falcao at first, then James and later on Berbatov.
Jardim has shown in Portugal that he can develop an attacking minded football and that is what Rybolovlev was interested in. I liked Ranieri too but I cannot judge and compare before even seeing what Jardim's team will look like.

Actually, playing defensively should be the way to perform in CL. PSG is ever falling because they try to go there as the big team. Ancelotti did better than Blanc because he accepted to play counter attack. If Monaco tries to go attacking against likes of Dortmund, Real, Arsenal, PSG... they will be eaten alive.

But while they were not always as attractive as Blanc's PSG, which would be hard task for any team, they did usually control the play in opponents end, and attacked most of the time. And that is also reflected in the distribution of goals pretty evenly amongst the players: they created chances by team play, and whoever was there to finish them, finished them. Rivière shone in this in the early season, Berbatov in the end, although he was often in offside.

But if they would have to go really defensive with likes of Falcao and Berbatov upfront, that would probably go badly as well. They really did not stand out as players capable of those individual performances to carry a defensive team. Both need the scoring chances to be produced for them. They had Rodriguez, and I fear the past mode is the correct one in this. we'll see what happens. Rumours are they are pushing for Griezmann in case Rodriguez is sold. €85M for Rodriguez, €30M for Griezmann are the numbers.

Monaco also have a serious visibility and marketing problem too don't forget. Look at the number of people who had no idea who James Rodriguez was before the WC. Other countries don't talk about Monaco and only refer to it as being a "filthy rich club", which is true but then this is also true for all the other big european clubs. They are always been mocked because no one goes to Louis II. By playing some nice attractive football, it would at least spark some interest, people will start to like Monaco more, go to the games and ultimately attract some good players.

Ok, I don't have many hopes of them performing in this years CL as they will be in hat number 4. But they will be able to build some experience.

Really hope James doesn't leave. I don't really believe AS and Marca who just put pressure on Real Madrid to sign someone expensive to reply to the purchase of Suarez by Barcelona.
Monaco need some wingers as Ocampos and Dirar aren't enough, Griezmann is indeed a good idea!

The reality is that Monaco have too many strikers in their team:
            Falcao - will not leave,
Berbatov - has impressed a lot and clearly has the Ligue 1 level,
Germain - will stay as he is a symbol of Monaco's good academy,
Martial - is very young but very promising,
Lacina Traore - hasn't played yet due to injury
            and Riviere.

Berbatov is a player who looks good when you watch his highlights, but when you watch matches, he is useless for most of the time. He had the level to perform against Ajaccio and Guingamp, when he didn't have to run because they were passing the ball around a defence standing still. He will stay, of course, as his contract was prolonged and nobody else wants him. But they can't count on him.

Falcao might stay or leave. As he has been injured, he'll probably stay now. That's their no. 1, for sure.

About Germain, Monaco is like PSG these days, they don't give a shit about their youth academy or anything like "tradition". They sell him for the first offer that he accepts.

Berbatov is exactly what Monaco needs against poor French Ligue 1 teams and cup games. I don't care if he is useless half the game, what counts is that in 12 appearances in Ligue 1 he is able to keep the ball up front, score 6 goals and make 5 assists.
Falcao will stay and will hopefully perform. He has had a year full of injuries and now has had time to adapt to Ligue 1.
Monaco do care about their youth academy. And yes it is a "tradition". Great players have come out of this academy that has recently been ranked 3rd best in France such as Ettori, Petit, Thuram, Henry, Trezeguet, etc. Monegasque fans are very attached to their academy and Rybolovlev and the Prince have at many occasions affirmed how important the academy is for the club.
