Spot the Differential – Gameweek 4

With many a Wildcard in play, it’s time to present you with our regular trio of left field options to tempt you off the beaten track. Our selection has value in mind, serving up a pair of Gameweek 3 scorers who look primed for back-to-back returns, plus a solid defensive option who looks to have cemented his start in a back four destined for further shut-outs.

KEVIN MIRALLAS

Whilst budget forward Steven Naismith remains Everton’s weapon of choice for Fantasy managers, Mirallas’ ownership is hovering just under 5%, and the Belgian’s underlying statistics suggest that he could be primed to emerge from his team-mate’s shadow as the Toffees roll up to West Brom this afternoon.

Despite only managing a ten minute substitute appearance in Everton’s first fixture of the season, Mirallas’ goal attempts outweigh Naismith’s at 10 to 7, placing the Belgian second in the rankings for total shots by midfielders this season, with an average of just over 19 minutes separating each of the winger’s attempts from one another. This goal threat proved effective against Chelsea last time out, with Mirallas opening his account for the season with a deft header, though with a large share of set pieces in his locker as well, it may not only be in front of goal that the 7.4 priced midfielder rewards his owners.

Today’s opponents will hold little fear for Everton, with the Baggies having conceded five goals already this campaign, including three in their last match against Swansea, and with Crystal Palace visiting Goodison Park in Gameweek 5, Roberto Martinez looks set to go out on the offensive again for at least the next couple of fixtures: Mirallas is likely to be one of the main beneficiaries.

DWIGHT GAYLE

It took less than a minute for the young striker to find the back of the net in Crystal Palace’s 3-3 draw with Newcastle a couple of weeks ago, and though that remained his only shot of the game, there’s no denying the starlet’s effectiveness when given opportunities. The Gameweek 3 goal was Gayle’s first league strike of the season in his first league start, though this was preceded by a first half hat-trick against Walsall in the Capital One Cup at the end of August.

A hamstring injury has ruled Marouane Chamakh out of Palace’s clash with Burnley this weekend, ensuring that Gayle should keep his place at the summit of Neil Warnock’s attack despite being a doubt with an ankle problem earlier this week. Another goal scoring performance from the 5.4 priced frontman today could well cement his starting spot for weeks to come, and with Leicester and Hull on the Eagles’ agenda in their next four fixtures, Gayle is certainly worth considering for managers eyeing up options in the budget forward department.

PHIL BARDSLEY

After Geoff Cameron underwent surgery earlier this week, Bardsley now looks nailed-on for Stoke at right back for the near future. The Potters have only conceded two goals over their first three fixtures, and will be looking to carry through the momentum from their shock 1-0 victory against Man City two weeks ago when they welcome Leicester to the Brittania today.

Despite being available for 0.6 less than team-mate Ryan Shawcross, Bardsley’s ownership remains at just 0.6%, making the former Sunderland man the least owned regular starter in Stoke’s backline.

Mark Hughes’ men face three home matches in their next five (LEI, NEW, SWA), whilst trips to QPR – who have only scored once so far this season – and Sunderland won’t daunt them too much either; Bardsley will be optimistic of adding to last Gameweek’s clean sheet and perhaps supplementing that with more attacking returns following his assist in Gameweek 2.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who are you captaining/ vice captaining this week and why?

I've added vc as I think we may need them this week.

      Still struggling on this one.

Currently got Sterling (C) Adebayor (VC).

Sterling is in terrific form, and I call bull on any information suggesting he won't start.

The issue I have is that I'm also sorely tempted by:

Super Mario (C). Will have to wait and see.

      Captaining: Falcao
      VC: Di Maria

      Reasons why;

      1. Differentials
      2. United have been shocking and the sea change needs to arrive and fast - the fixture with QPR is as good as time as any to get the shooting boots working
      3. Think this is a week where a punt could really pay off because there is uncertainty surrounding the other captain choices also e.g will Costa/Sterling play? Rooney should play but what will his position be - midfield?
      4. It's my birthday today and so hoping for birthday luck to help this weekend also

      Rooney (c), Sterling (vc)

I think United will be much stronger with the new signings coming in and I expect Rooney to start up front. QPR are pretty rubbish at the back so Roo has every chance to bag a couple of goals.

I'm leaning towards taking a punt on TADIC.

Costa and Sterling are options too but could get subbed early with CL in mind. Rooney has been in poor form since Van Persie came back so I'm not letting him have the armband again as he disappointed me last GW.

I'm also weighing up Lovren as I think CS and bonus points could be on offer for him, as well as a couple of goals chances...

I really don't have a clue. With the doubts over Sterling and Costa, I'm ruling them out. Which leaves me with Rooney,Pelle and Fabregas... Might actually go with Fabregas, this seems to be the kind of week where a consistent performer might be better off than a flair pick

      Ivanovic(C) ftw.

      Goal + Clean Sheet + 3 baps = a 30 point differential.

I'd change Elliot to McCarthy in the hope than you'll have two playing keepers, seeing as you don't have Krul. King is a rotation risk, safer 4.5s. The rest is great.

He's playing tomorrow thankfully, but will be happy to get any points if I ditch after the deadline. I'm captaining sterling. Who are you going for?

Congrats, man. Just keep Rooney for now and try to find 5 minutes on the Internet to make your transfer next week.

        Forster (McCarthy)
        Moreno Wilson Bertrand (Taylor Moore)
        Ramsey Sterling Sigurdsson Chadli (Boyd)
        Aguero Falcao/Rooney D.Costa

I am thinking Rooney but only because of guaranteed minutes this week.

Chadli not 100% nailed, Lennon/Townsend as competition although I think they are more competition with Eriksen the way he's been playing.

Gonna give him sun WBA to prove his worth 🙂

Fair enough. I'd go Aldi over Clyne due to Clyne's injury proneness...

Love the Wordpress, I was thinking of doing something similar this year and most of your wildcard dilemnas have been the same as mine.
I have the same keepers and mids as you but different Def (I'm viewing Ivo as another mid based on his first 3-games)
      Went for Balo over Rooney
For captain I'm worried about game time for both Sterling and Costa so in your team I would take a gamble on DiMaria
I think this is a good gameweek to gamble on the captain as it's rare to have a week without one or two obvious picks.
Personally I will captain Balo as I'm a QPR fan so can't be cheering DiMaria on!
      Good luck

My starting defenders are Ivanovic - Colo - Caulker (Chambers on bench, P.Jones injured). GK is Begovic.

I have already taken -4 hit but should I transfer P.Jones out for a better defender (and get -8p hit)? Or should I just go with Caulker or Chambers?
