Scout Notes – Gameweek 22 – Sunday

Santi Cazorla bags a goal and assist as Arsenal emerge victorious from the Etihad. Olivier Giroud also finds the net, whilst the Gunners’ defence keep Sergio Aguero at bay with a second successive shut-out. Earlier in the day, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing are amongst the goals as West Ham register a comprehensive win over struggling Hull.

Cazorla Steers Gunners to Victory

The little Spaniard stole the show in yesterday’s stunning win at the Etihad by bagging a goal and assist in the 2-0 triumph. Whilst Alexis Sanchez had a rare off-day, Cazorla’s form continues to suggest he offers a viable double-up option alongside the Chilean in our starting line-ups – he’s now racked up five goals, two assists and 11 bonus points in his last eight appearances. Owned by just 3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the 8.2-priced playmaker has home clashes against Villa, Leicester and Everton, allied with trips to Palace and QPR in the next six, as the schedule smiles kindly on Arsene Wenger’s side.

Elsewhere in the Gunners attack, Olivier Giroud notched a fourth goal in five appearances to also come into contention ahead of the aforementioned run of fixtures. Also setting us back 8.2, the Frenchman is very much in the differential bracket, too – sitting in just 4% of FPL teams, he’s another who’s sure to come in for increased investment as Wildcards are wielded over the fortnight’s break from league action.

Arsenal Defence on the Up

It’s two clean sheets in as many matches for the north London side after nullifying the threat of Sergio Aguero and co. Given that last week’s home shut-out against Stoke was the Gunners’ first in seven attempts, little was expected from their defenders ahead of the Etihad visit but yesterday’s resilient display is sure to bring their backline onto our radars. With Mathieu Debuchy ruled out for three months, Wenger’s decision to select Hector Bellerin ahead of Calum Chambers at right-back is sure to pique our interest – at 4.4, he could be a real bargain if he can keep ahead of the summer signing, though David Ospina, at 4.8, also looks an option after getting the nod between the posts once again.

City Struggles in Toure’s Absence

With Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero back in the starting XI, much was expected of the champions – over 187,000 FPL managers drafted in the Argentine prior to the weekend deadline but his owners picked up no more than a single point, after he earned a late yellow card. Bearing in mind that City now travel to Stamford Bridge when league action resumes in two weeks’ time, the bandwagon may be temporarily slowed down until Gameweek 24. From that point on, Manuel Pellegrini’s troops host Hull, Newcastle and Leicester and also travel to Stoke and Burnley – by then, Aguero’s match sharpness will be fully up to speed and few will be willing to go without over such an enticing stretch of fixtures.

The champions have now failed to win any of their four league matches without Yaya Toure this season. Worryingly for Pellegrini, if the midfielder and new Etihad team-mate Wilfried Bony reach the Africa Cup of Nations final on February 8, they would likely miss the next three league matches, given that the Gameweek 25 trip to Stoke is on February 11.

Carroll and Downing Deliver

Sam Allardyce started with a 4-2-3-1 for yesterday’s clash against Hull, with Andy Carroll leading the line and Stewart Downing tucked in behind. A half-time switch to a midfield diamond saw the pair grab a goal apiece in an easy 3-0 win over the struggling Tigers – Carroll now has five strikes in his last eight, whilst Downing’s efforts took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists over the same period. Downing has now climbed into fourth spot in the FPL midfield standings on 116 points. but with showdowns against Liverpool, United, Southampton, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next seven Gameweeks, it remains to be seen how many of his 26% owners will keep the faith.

Tigers Toil Again

West Ham went into yesterday’s encounter with just a single clean sheet in the previous eight. With both their main forwards sidelined through injury, though, Hull were unable to take advantage of their hosts’ poor defensive form and drew yet another blank – alarmingly for Steve Bruce, his side have now failed to score in six of the last eight Gameweeks. Still stuck in the drop zone, Hull now have three vital home encounters (NEW, AVL, QPR) against sides in the bottom half of the table to boost their survival plight. Sone Aluko – classified as a midfielder in FPL and priced at 4.6 – led the line at Upton Park after recovering from a calf complaint and could offer Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect, for those who believe Bruce’s side can profit from those upcoming matches.

People are forgetting the effect CL and international break has on Oscar. Once they both restart in a couple of GWs, he'll be rotated again.

Cesc is still a better option than Oscar imo.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    The 4th Midfielder revisited

Earlier this month Kroos Kontrol wrote an excellent community article looking at the so called fourth midfielder. This is a player who can vary in price but is not considered a heavily owned heavy hitter such as Hazard or a fifth midfielder such as Boyd, who can be benched regularly.

A couple of weeks on I thought I'd revisit this and ask who you think makes the ideal fourth midfielder?

Here's his article to refresh on his options http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/01/05/the-fourth-midfielder/

A key reason I thought it'd be a good time to ask is because we are currently in a Gameweek where lots of viable contenders have emerged or cemented their place in the list. Santi Cazorla (one of Kroos's picks) is a good example. Another is Oscar and what about Eriksen - still popping up with crucial points for the 16.8% in FPL that own him.

Eriksen is the perfect dead team/draft team player. I just don't have the patience with him. I'm defo getting 4 big mids. Anyone to join Hazard Sanchez Fabregas. I can choose between Cazorla Walcott Silva

Three great fourth midfield optoons there.

Cazorla, Oscar, Eriksen, Chadli and Silva are among mine. I'm concerned about City without Toure though - on paper they really shouldn't have folded so easiliy against Arsenal. Silva is currently my 4th midfielder but tempted to switch him out

//Eriksen is the perfect dead team/draft team player. I just don't have the patience with him.//

THIS, THIS, THIS, so much THIS. He has literally burned me so much, no returns (maybe one) in the 6-7 weeks I owned. That probably preyed on my mind when I took Chadli over him (though everyone was looking at Chadli at that time).

Will he keep his place when Mane is back? Tadic, Mane, Elia and JWP to fight for three spots as attacking mids?

Not convinced on Eriksen yet. He's certainly got skill but in terms of FPL impact, most of his shots come from outside the box - he does not get as many shots in the box as say Chadli.
Cazorla on the other hand will be going into my WC team.

Pretty well if you will captain Costa in some/many games. I can't imagine many people will want to captain Kane or Fabregas. Oh, wait...

Costa + Puncheon won't outscore Hazard + Kane though.

And I'd rather have a defender than Fabs as my 3rd Chelsea player since I don't have an enormous TV.

at the moment i have three fourth midfielders if that makes sense
cazorla- cant see him getting dropped, plus we now know he is on pens ahead of giroud, one of the best set of fixtures for a while.
walters- stoke back geting results, still chipping in with goals and assists and they also have some tasty fixtures, at 5.2 he gives extra money elsewhere.
JWP- kind of fourth and a half midfielder, seems to be starter for now, on set pieces and playing advanced, sort of a 4.8 fab.

I'm probably getting Cazorla in for Chadli... Some really nice fixtures ahead... I'm 0.2m short of getting Monreal also...

Definitely look at Bellerin or Chambers (depending on who he goes for but looks like the cheaper Bellerinor Chambers if he changes to him instead) rather than Monreal for sure.

      Cheers Jonty.

I am going with Aguero-Costa-Kane most likely, so I am likely downgrading Silva to Sterling/Cazorla as the 3rd MF to make some funds.

That leaves 6.6 for the fourth slot. Not really sure who to pick though.

But WHY are you tempted by them???

I am tempted because kun is a must that's a given, costa keeps ticking - and yes giroud has bad stats but mostly because he was red carded and played less than others - but with such service behind him even a donkey scores well.
Yes I do consider Kane and berahino (not Austin mind you - fixtures are bad and qpr are shite away)
But I try to look at future stats not past stats 🙂

My team is as follows and I have 2 FT and 4.1M in the bank.

I played my WC last week and already am nervous that I transferred out someone as explosive as Costa, with the intention of getting Aguero in.

How essential to a top 5K position is it to have BOTH Aguero and Costa?

Really not sure what move to make next..

Think that Bellerin is a great punt. He could be nailed seeing as Arsenal have kept the first two clean sheets in a long time with him and Kosh playing. I've taken out Hutton for him and even if he doesn't play I have PvA coming in against Burnely so it doesn't matter. I think that it's well worth the risk for a Gunners defender possibly at 4.4. Any others doing the same? He's also a great differential.

Agree. Planning to get him in for Zaba. This will allow me to upgrade Austin to Giroud before I WC next GW. Have 2 FT to do it. Bellerin is worth the risk considering how poor Villa are in front of goal.

    Sorry for re-posting :/
After rough calculations depending on fixtures/form/usual second-half-season-form thats how League table would looks like at the end of the season:

    1. Chelsea ~90pts. (+/-3pts.)
    2. Man City ~86pts. (+/-3pts.)
    3. Man Utd ~ 76pts. (+/-3pts.)
    4. Arsenal ~ 75pts. (+/-3pts.)
    5. S'oton ~ 73pts. (+/-3pts.)
    6. L'pool ~ 68pts. (+/-3pts.)
    7. Spurs ~ 65pts. (+/-3pts.)

Seems no good to me as a Liverpool fan thought :/ Opinions?

This is just a prediction made around the top 8 teams at that moment only. But the only thing that is looking very likely to happen is the 3rd-4th place battle between United,Arsenal and S'oton IMO 🙂

this game is so effing wierd...

i becnhed costa this week (horrible mistake that followed some plausible arguments)
i did not have sanchez last week for his big haul (was ok without him for the previous six weeks)
i did not have kane the week before for his big haul
Last week my cap was hazard and his 3 points
this week kane and his 2 points

yer i'm stlil 5000 in the world somehow. (thanks to downing/eriksen/and many weeks of yaya (c))

imagine what will happen if i get things right 🙁

    WC time!!

it was either eriksen (poor form) or Austin (tough ficture.
then i thought - eriksen is a class player - even on a slump i cant bench him home to sunderland. and austin at home has good stats and is on penalties. a trange thought then eneered my mind - costa away form + no bonus + yellow cards - maybe i bench him and worst i suffer his 5-6 points?

        distater followed...

thats the problem of not having a boyd in your tesm - my fourth and fifth mids are downing and eriksen who did very well this week.

    Pantilimon
    Terry - Jones - PvA
Sanchez - Hazard - Di Maria - Sterling - Tadic
    Aguero - Bojan

    Krul; Kane, Wisdom, Trippier

    0.2 ITB, 1FT

First player on the chopping board would be Tadic. Should I downgrade to Elia or give him another week and save? Want to get Giroud in for Kane after a couple of weeks, so will eventually need to raise some funds.
