Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 22 – Monday

Kevin Mirallas’ missed spot-kick proves disastrous for Everton and Leighton Baines owners alike as the Toffees stutter to a goalless draw with West Brom. The Baggies earn a second straight shut-out as Tony Pulis’ installation brings their defence onto our Wildcard radars.

Mixed Fortunes for Baines Owners

The major talking point from last night’s match was Kevin Mirallas’ decision to take – and subsequently miss – the Toffees’ first-half spot-kick as Roberto Martinez’ men failed to score for the fifth time in eight matches. The Belgian’s domination of set-pieces has already dented Leighton Baines’ prospects in recent weeks and the left-back suffered again after Mirallas pulled rank before striking the outside of the post.

After the match, Roberto Martinez confirmed that Baines remains the Toffees number one spot-kick taker but played down reports that Mirallas was withdrawn at half-time as a result of his penalty decision:

“He [Mirallas] wasn’t 100%, he was feeling his hamstring. He wasn’t moving freely. We had dynamic players in the second-half full of energy, and that was the reason for the substitution. Our penalty taker is Leighton Baines, but Kevin always takes penalties well and he felt confident, he wanted to take it. Leighton was quite happy to allow him to do that and both have the quality to score. If he hit the back of the net then nothing would’ve happened, but both players have enough character to convert the penalty at that moment. For me Leighton is the No.1 taker. At that point I would’ve been happy to allow Leighton and Kevin to discuss that. The issue is we haven’t scored and it becomes a talking point.”

Last night’s goalless draw did, at least, bring the Toffees a first clean sheet in 12 attempts. After a poor run of form, Baines has now delivered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks and sits just one point off fourth spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender standings, though with in-form Palace, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next five, he may have to up his attacking output to stay in contention.

Another Clean Sheet for Pulis

The Baggies’ new manager continues to weave his magic on their defensive assets after steering his side to a second successive shut-out since taking the helm. Once again, Pulis selected the 3.9-priced Chris Baird at left-back ahead of Sebastien Pocognoli and the former Fulham man looks poised to nail down a regular role ahead of clashes with Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six. Ben Foster’s save point potential helped the stopper to a seven-point return at Goodison, and at 4.6, could be set for increased investment as Fantasy managers line up to take advantage of the “Pulis effect”.

Berahino Back on the Flank

After netting five times in his first two appearances under Pulis, the youngster was drafted in by 24,000 FPL managers ahead of the Goodison clash. Hopes were high that Berahino was set to step up his claim for a place in our three-man frontlines but his manager’s tactical tinkering may force a rethink – Pulis switched from a 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 for last night’s encounter and opted for the muscular Victor Anichebe up front, with Berahino fielded on the left. It remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will opt for a solitary striker for road trips only, though last night’s teamsheet certainly suggests the young striker’s versatility could go against him when Pulis is looking to tighten up.

Baines owners should be grateful to Mirallas.

Taking the penalty off Baines stopped him missing it, then being upset scoring an OG and then frustrated fouling in the box for a red card, penalty and Everton eventually going down 4-0.

Could so easily have been -4 or 5, So you could say Mirallas saved Baines owners 10 points.

What Martinez has said about the penalty reflects his lack of character. He should put his foot down, like Wenger did, and insist on the correct taker taking them in crucial moments.

This. Martinez is playing down the issue to reduce the pressure from press. He comes out and slams Mirallas, then rumours of disharmony in the squad and maybe even a Mirallas transfer start to happen.

      This.

Go ahead and steal a couple of Baines' free kicks if the angle is good. But penalties...? NO. Just... NO. The @ss cost me a goal, bonus and possibly an assist for Lukaku (don't know - would he have gotten it given that it was a handball but he caused it?).

gets the most bonus of them 3. Eventhough bert has 2g 2a, clyne 2g 1a and fonte has no goals/assists. my reasoning is bert wont end up 4g 4a, clyne wont end up 4g, 2a AND fonte wont end up 0g 0a. so if/when he nicks some goals/assists (as he have previous seasons) and keeps getting the bonus from clean sheets he will outscore these two from now on. also cheaper.

I'd be surprised if Bertrand and Clyne don't add plenty more attacking stats between now and the end of the season given their fixtures.

maybe they will, its just a hunch. all im saying is clyne has scored 1 goal in 2 seasons before. now he already has 2 goals, i dint think hell end up 4 goals this season. bertrands 2g 2a is pretty impressive for a defender at this point. just a hunch but i think hell not add 2g 2a to that.

fonte had 3 goals last season and 2g 2a the season before that. now he has 0g 0a. im betting him to get some. similar situation with terry before christmas, no goals/bonus yet. but every season he scores some. thats why i got him instead of azpi. turned out nice. of course luck plays some part.

Clyne should get a few assists, he looked great last game and got plenty of crosses in, including one that Pelle headed onto the bar. Your reasoning seems sound with Fonte though.

A quick browse through the Arsenal forums suggests Bellerin is nailed on for the next 3 months with Debuchy and Jenkinson(when he returns) being the other RBs in the team... with Chambers being a backup CB

more inclined to being a CB by the looks of it.. Debuchy first choice, Bellerin second(until Barca call him back) and Jenkinson third when he returns from loan looks the be the majority opinion there. Chambers backup to Merte/Kosc

According to the fan forum, Chambers is a CB who can fill in at RB, but really lacks the pace and quality for the position. They reckon their 3 RBs are Debuchy (out), Jenkinson (loan), and Bellerin.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Unsteady eddies

Jason Puncheon proved great in Gameweek 22, but it could have been different. For much of the game he was ineffective until a change of formation and strategy propelled him into an effective central role. Angle Di Maria was another to benefit from a tactical shift - moving into a deeper role where he is more effective.

These unsteady eddies who are moved around the pitch at their manager's whim can be lucrative investments, but they can offer considerable frustration.

Which other players fall into this category? Do you opt to take a gamble that their manager will use them wisely or is the risk that they will be wasted out of position be too great?

More importantly which playes are free from rotation within the starting XI, who retain the same role and give Fantasy managers added security? Costa seems an obvious example. Which others are there?

Fabregas is the definition of a Steady Eddie, but his goal threat goes up considerably when he plays in the hole.

There are also some versatile/hard working forwards who can have their appeal reduced if they are asked to play out wide - for example Berahino, Diouf, Valencia and Sakho. That said, the switch doesn't seem to have done Dwight Gayle any harm.

I thought Kane was pretty safe until this week.

It seems managers just love to have a tinker, fixing it even when it ain't broke.
Also hom often when we have taken a player out, does he bounce back to form.
I give you Chadli and Eriksen as two prime examples.

Maybe we just need to have a bit more patience. It seems we do with some players and not others.
Siggy was imo indulged by most for far too long
Yet Hazard who has been a great player for us over the last few months blanks twice and is being dropped as if he has a major injury.

Eriksen, not always played centrally. Can be affected when Lamela and/or Chadli are playing.

Sanchez seems locked on the left for Arsenal, but his license to roam centrally might be limited now that Walcott and Ramsey are back.

Doable.. but seems a waste. Gonna be playing Panti most weeks anyway with Krul just being good backup. I'd be tearing my hair out deciding between Foster and Panti. And i dont like Villa's defense atm

    Foster

The starting back four (if all fit) would be:

          Debuchy Mert Kon Gibbs

Debuchy is injured so it's whether wenger goes for Bellerin or Chambers

Gibbs is fit again so it's whether Wenger will start him over Monreal (who had a good game vs Man City)

I would go for Bellerin personally. He has played very well this season.

It seems to be the year of the knee-jerker. If players don't perform well every week they're out.
That's what comes of endless free transfers and wildcards.
It breeds the attention span of the average two year old.

    Kevin you b@stid:

    Lost points =
    Baines - 6 for goal + 3 bonus
    Lukaku - 3 for assist (maybe) + 2 bonus

Played Hutton (1 point) instead of Baird (7 points).

These lost points will undoubtedly come back to haunt me. The worst part about Kevin is that he's not even a viable FPL prospect due to his rotation, injuries, etc. He just comes and infringes on Baines' points. Why would he do this?!?!
