Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Huth

Earlier this week, Leicester City announced the signing of Robert Huth on a three-year deal from Stoke City. The German centre-back joins the Foxes’ ranks after enjoying a hugely successful spell on loan last season, tallying 14 appearances after making the switch in January.

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth spent his early years training at a couple of local youth academies (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin), before Chelsea identified his potential and brought him to Stamford Bridge in 2001. Having joined the Blues at the tender age of 17, Huth made his first appearance in the final match of the 2001/02 season, but failed to cement a regular starting berth due to the fierce competition from John Terry, William Gallas and Ricardo Carvalho. The 6ft 3in defender recorded just 62 appearances and two goals during his five-season spell with Chelsea.

Huth then made the switch to Middlesbrough in pursuit of first-team football, with the Yorkshire club stumping up £6 million to land their man. A catalogue of ankle injuries contrived to restrict the Germany international to just 25 appearances across his first two seasons at the Riverside Stadium. Boro’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 saw Huth plot a route back to the Premier League with Stoke City, having registered two goals in 63 outings for his new club.

Huth instantly established himself as a mainstay in the Potters rearguard and went on to feature in all but 15 of Stoke’s league fixtures in his first four seasons at the club. Consecutive knee operations then limited Huth to 13 appearances in the next term and a half, before Leicester snagged him on a loan deal in February of this year. Starting every fixture under Nigel Pearson, Huth bagged one goal during his stay at the King Power Stadium – by the time he left the Britannia, the big German had netted 18 times in 188 outings across all competitions.

Early on in his career, Huth enjoyed a regular starting role in Germany’s senior squad, partnering Per Mertesacker in the 2005 Confederations Cup. He went on to notch two goals in 19 outings, earning his last cap back in 2009.

The Prospects

When Huth arrived at Leicester after Gameweek 24, the Foxes ranked joint-bottom alongside Queens Park Rangers in terms of clean sheets (four). The following 14 Gameweeks harvested six shut-outs, with five clean sheets arriving in their final seven match-ups. Whether Leicester can emulate those late-season performances without the looming spectre of relegation is another matter, though.

Considering that Pearson opted to field three centre-backs in either a 3-5-2 or 5-4-1 set-up in the second half of the campaign, Huth offers the security of starts alongside club captain, Wes Morgan. Indeed, even if Pearson switches to a four-man backline, Huth’s minutes looks unthreatened, with Marcin Wasilewski the likeliest candidate to drop out in the heart of defence.

Delving into the data, Huth and Morgan caused all manner of problems for opposing defences during the run-in, furnishing Leicester with a potent aerial threat from set-pieces. From Gameweek 25 (his first match for Leicester) onwards, Huth ranked joint-third among all defenders for total attempts (16) and lead the way for efforts inside the box (15), with his solitary goal coming in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over West Bromwich Albion. Morgan, meanwhile, placed second in terms of shots inside the box (13) and attempts on target (five).

Elsewhere at the back, the rampaging Jeffrey Schlupp was a Fantasy favourite in the first half of the campaign by virtue of his out-of-position potential on the left flank, resulting in two goals in the first 13 Gameweeks. The arrival of Christian Fuchs not only places question marks over Schlupp’s minutes next time out, though, it may well afford us the best route into the Foxes defence, with the Austrian – a set-piece specialist – likely to be handed the left wing-back berth should Pearson continue with a 3-4-1-2.

Bearing in mind that Leicester finished the previous season with the fourth-worst defence, there’d be no surprise if their main defenders remained around the 4.5 mark. Should Fuchs come in at 5.0, though, Huth and Morgan are likely to battle it out for our attentions as cheaper alternatives and with a favourable start to the season (SUN, whu, TOT, bou, AVL, sto), Fantasy managers may well be eyeing up the German as a viable budget option for our five-man defences.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who will win the Premier League next season?

Have Arsenal finally discovered how to put together a title winning campaign?

Will LVG finally get ManU's house in order?

Will maintaining momentum be enough for Chelsea to see off their rivals, or will new recruits be needed?

And what of Manchester City. They scored the most goals last season, if they can sort out their defence then surely they are in good shape to take the trophy?

      Chelsea will win
Arsenal will finish second and run them close
      United 3rd with CL distraction
City will make a complete hash of it resulting in Pelle getting the sack

Wait until Chelsea's recruitment is done, but so far it is between them and Arsenal for me.

City have not strengthened yet, Depay the only united, and Liverpool and Spurs look a bit off the pace.

      1. Chelsea (as it stands atm)
      2. Arsenal still need an overhaul of their entire back 4 with maybe the exception of Kos
      3. Man Utd will struggle still right now but Schneiderlein i think is that big and an important signing.
      4. Chelsea should replace Mikel/Ramires and good to go
      5. Man City also need a complete overhaul of defence

      Think so
Yes, Schneiderlin and Depay are key signings
Just 2-3 new recruits for back-ups
They need to strengthen their defence to win it

      Winners: Chelsea sadly.
Arsenal? No chance. Just don't have the squad to compete with Citeh and Chs.
LVG: the feeling at this stage is more reinforcements are needed esp in defence.
Chs will still need to go on improving...more in covering positions though.
Citeh: Yaya on the wain, some big signings are needed. 2nd but no more.

I had a dream this morning that I was driving and on the radio Mark, Granville, Jonty and someone called Olivia were discussing software/program coding for FFS. I don't understand any of that. Then I went past a park where the 3 dudes were playing football. I joined in playing and starting talking about FFS. They were desperate to know who I was but I was making them guess. Jonty then got his phone out to log on and work out who I am. The End

Shortlists for the new season people?

Monreal, Alexis, Ramsey, and Giroud from Arsenal.
Coleman and Lukaku from Everton, Garbutt if he joins Bournemouth.
Bolasie and Puncheon from Crystal Palace.
    Hazard, Henderson, Sterling.
    Valdes and Smalling.
    Mignolet and Emre Can.
    Gylfi, Kane, Deeney.
One of West Ham's new boys.
    Charlie Austin when he's back.

Forget to mention Costa! My forward line will probably be Costa/Kane/Giroud. Would love to have both Agüero and Costa but it depends on Agüero's price really, reckon he'll be £12.0m+ now that he's finally won the golden boot.

I think Falcao is being bought by Mourinho as a favor to Mendes. He'll be more effective than he was at United definitely but imo Diego Costa is still very much the main man.

He dipped at the end but I think he's a top player. Walcott/Giroud is another dilemma I haven't thought of and pre-season probably won't tell us much either. One thing I'll say is that Giroud has been our CF for the last three years and whenever I've thought of selling him on FPL he has started.

      What about Walcott from Arsenal?

Definitely interested in Bolasie and Puncheon but can't choose between them, seems a little much to have two CP mids.

Still have faith in Kane. But debating when to get him.

I'm a little wary of Everton.

I am interested in Leicester, both as a cheap striker and for defense for the first few gameweeks...I take it you're less into that idea since no one from LEI is on your list?

      1. 7alwachi
        • 10 Years

More like I haven't scouted Leicester enough and the rest of the bottom-half teams lol! Walcott is a decent shout depending on what Wenger decides to do with him. I think Puncheon will be priced lower and will have lesser ownership so I'm thinking of getting him ahead of Bolasie. I'm wary of Everton too but the thought is that some of them might be underpriced given their league position last season. I think Kane will produce again but I'll have to look at his price. £8.5-9m imo

Yeah I'm surprised so few people are talking about Kane as an option, I think he could do very well again.

It'll only be my second season playing FPL so I'm curious, how do you make your decisions regarding the lower ranked teams? I.e., what will help you with scouting Leicester?

Also, any interest in Mane? He's definitely on my list as well.

Usually from smaller clubs (outside top 7) I pick six players:
            1) backup keeper, picked Myhill at the start last year for £4m
            2) £4.5-5m defender with decent fixtures at the start and good attacking potential, I picked Clyne last year. Was considering Caulker too.
            3) £4m defender. Usually these don't start but if you're lucky you might pick up one of the 3-4 that do. I picked Hutton last year and it worked.
            4) mid-table midfielder, not too cheap not too expensive. Got Gylfi last year, considering him this year too along with Bolasie and Puncheon.
            5) £4.5m midfielder, nailed-on for his team just to sit on your bench and get you 1-3 points if needed. Had Wanyama last year and Britton in previous years. I play 3-4-3 so for me this is essential, also saves you the heartache of your £5.5m midfielder scoring a goal whilst being on your bench.
            6) £6m striker. Every year a few bargains emerge. I had Austin at the start last year, Kane was another that shined. It's a great idea to take a punt with one of these, if they flop you can easily switch them. Wait until GW5-8 if you want to do that though, switched Austin out too early last season and regretted it. The £6m gems will be clear by then.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has pledged his long-term future to the club, after admitting the fans' faith in him was hard to ignore.

"It is very, very important as a person and as a football player as well when you see people are following you,” Toure told the Manchester Evening News.

“It is difficult sometimes to disappoint them. The fans are doing brilliant for this club. When people show you loyalty, nothing is going by. That’s why I want to stay at City. I want to stay long."

Both midfielder Dravko Kuzmanovic and defender Davide Santon have refused a move from Inter Milan to Watford, according Gazzetta dello Sport.

Inter reportedly accepted a bid of 12million euros for both players but both players decided against the move.

Just read in the local rag about J-Rod getting married. He's fit and raring to go. Could be a real steal this season, maybe a 6.5m striker option as opposed to Mane coming in at 8-8.5m in midfield??

The value will be too much to ignore.

I can see me doing Aguero/J-Rod/xxx up top.

They want to fund a move for Benatia. Would be a great buy, Gunners need more steel in midfield and he can play a bit. His drink driving case prob and possible jail time putting some clubs off.

A slight upgrade in quality, £20m out of pocket, £100k a week on wages, Ramsey and Wilshere (24 and 23 year old) stunted.

  19. Okazaki's Prospects

As discussed yesterday morning, Shinji Okazaki's move to Leicester has now gone through. Mainz 05 fans are very sad to see him go, as he's been excellent for them in the last 2 season, scoring 27 goals in 65 games for a team that is hardly prolific.

It's predominantly his workrate that made the striker so popular with the fans. Okazaki was Mainz's first line of defence, running tirelessly to close players down and chasing long balls into the channels to provide relief for Mainz's back line. This side of his game will also make him popular at Leicester, I feel.

But €10 million for a 29-year-old with only a year remaining on his contract was a figure that sporting director Christian Heidel was never likely to get again, and so fans have accepted the move, not least because Okazaki has never made a secret of wanting to play in the Premier League.

He's very much a counter-attacking player though, and worked so well at Mainz in the last two seasons because he fitting into their system perfectly. Okazaki had previously struggled to impress at VfB Stuttgart, who were playing a more possession-based football.

This isn't Okazaki's strength at all - he doesn't really hold the ball up well and lacks the technical skills to bring others into the game, so Pearson will need to find a way of playing to his strengths. As with Christian Fuchs, this could be a good (if over-priced) transfer for Leicester if they've done their research into the player's strengths and weaknesses.

Work rate and tenacity are also good things when moving to the EPL. So many foreigners have goal counts and shot counts but can't hack it due to being knocked around a bit and having to take it and fight on.

Okazaki seems to be the type that this would come second nature to him and will just get on with it and give it back, meaning that's a couple reasons overseas players fail it of the window.

In conclusion is still depends on the 2 huge unknowns right now. Price and is he nailed?

If nailed and priced around the price of promoted strikers I think he's a definite watch list.

    Mainlanders with Sky Sports :

7:00 tonight, Donegal v Derry from Clones.

    Donegal, Seamus Coleman's home county.

    Derry, Martin O'Neill's home county.

Both men played under-age Gaelic football for their counties.

Expect a robust tactical game, there will be some good football too but Ulster encounters are well known for their physicality. In a game where the losers live to fight another day in 2015, all games in Ulster have a winner-takes-all intensity in pursuit of the Ulster Championship.

    Enjoy 🙂

I'm Irish and most of the people I know wouldn't watch garlic football if it was being played outside their front door.

It used to be a good sport but there are only a few teams that play it even remotely like football any more. On top of that the players and fans set an awful example for kids with their behaviour and language towards officials and other players/management teams. Definitely not something I want my boys involved in (the culture in hurling leaves a lot to be desired also).

I thought that was deliberate !

Fair enough. I agree hurling is a better game, best sport in the world in my biased opinion. The language at games has been there since I started going to games about 40 years ago. But player antics have gotten worse, I think a lot worse since the increase in social media and increased TV coverage, whichever is a bit contradictory for me, with more exposure of bad behaviors you'd think it would improve. I think poorer inconsistent refereeing hasn't helped but refs get a lot of stick fora thankless job.

I still love the football, sometimes can see the good in a defensive tactical low scoring game over a Scorefest. But Hurling is king, hopefully will stay free flowing and the more manly game than football.

Good post, a lot of great points.

Your point re the refs kind of sums the whole thing up. Fans, players and coaches should not be allowed to criticise/abuse the refs in public imo. They need and deserve to be shown respect like they are in rugby. There should of course be a protocol in place for fair critique of refs so they can keep improving which I'm sure they are always striving to do too.

As per above I used to watch and attend a lot of football matches but either the game has changed or the way I've viewed it has.

Easy buddy, I did alright with sports growing up. I played football, hurling, soccer, golf, volleyball, karate cross country running, kayaking to name a few and most were to a pretty decent level. It's not the football that was played when I was playing that I have an issue with its the football that is being played now and the fact I have kids make miss question the whole culture of the sport and the skill set it teaches kids for life.

I remember an underage game I was at where a 13 year old was sent on at half time and told to make fing sure that the opponents best player didn't walk off the pitch at the end. The same young lad ended up in jail 9 years later for gbh. Great life lesson he was thought eh?

Sky Sports have just done a 'how will Liverpool lineup' article.

    Their 'possible team' was:

    ---------------Mignolet
    ----------Skrtel Sakho Can
    Milner Hendo Coutinho Moreno
    ---------------Firmino
    ----------Sturridge Ings

Skrtel right centre back, Can left centre back, Coutinho central midfield?

They get paid for this stuff! 😆

Not many people besides pedants care too much about what side of centre back players are illustrated. Clyne will take Milner's spot, Milner will take Coutinho's, then probably 2 behind one striker.

Don't you think a professional sports writer should know where players will play, in an article entirely about where players will play?

I mean Coutinho in central midfield with Henderson? He must have never watched Pool, and not even bothered doing research before submitting the article...

Looking at that team, it makes me think Emre Can could be good for fpl. He will surely start as as a defender, but because he is a midfielder if he gets moved up during the season he could be a nice oop. I'll keep an eye on him

I think they'll classify him as a midfielder, personally. But if they do put him down as a defender, he'd definitely be a great option. At the very least, he would always make the passing bonus.

Here's one I read yesterday. 4-2-3-1. Fairly close but I'd have Milner and Can holding mid and Henderson in my 3. Firminho isn't a 10 so at this stage it's optimistic thinking he'll start as a 9.

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 10 Years

          ---------Mignolet
          Clyne Skrtel Sakho Moreno
          -----Milner Can Hendo
          Lallana Firmino Coutinho

I don't think it's optimal, but at least it's not stupid.

I think there's a lack of creativity in midfield, and Lallana and Coutinho are wasted playing wide IMO. Also not convinced about FIrmino playing as a 9.

Me neither, yet! If a disturbed unsettled Balotelli got some starts last season surely he'll give Ings with Firmino a try, at least in pre-season.

For sure, although I reckon Pool will sign another 9 before the transfer window closes.

They need a bit of depth to manage European football.

Isn't ings, firmino, sturridge enough depth?

I think they need 4 strikers, especially as Firmino isn't an out and out 9, Sturridge is perma-crocked, and they can always play with 2 strikers. So if you include Origi, I think they need another.

Assuming Balotelli and Lambert are now non-options.

With that list I don't think they can afford another, balotelli's probably on a ridiculous wage

Yeh, this would be assuming they sell Lambert and Balotelli, which I think is on the to-do list for Pool.

Yeah Firminho is more of a wide player than a central striker from what I've seen of him

      ---------------Mignolet
      ---Clyne----Skrtel-Sakho----Moreno
      ---------------------Can
      -----------Hendo-------Milner
      -----------------Coutinho
      -------------Firmino----ST

I think the diamond, or 4-2-2-2 would be the best way to go about it. BR would probably play 4231 to accommodate Lallana, which I disagree with.

That's probably what I'd do, but I'd play Lallana instead of Milner.

You can see for England how blunt a team can be when you have 'workers' as your outside mids.

England is nothing to judge on... 😛

The diamond worked brilliantly with Hendo and Allen as the engines. The problem in this team is the RCB and the fact that Can is a CM and not a DM.

Apart from our wildly different opinions on Skrtel and Lallana, we're pretty much on the same page. 😉 😀

He is on holiday in Vegas. Medical when he comes back. If you're on twitter, search Jay Riley and give him a follow. Good man, knows his stuff

He signed his contract in Brazil with Liverpool's representatives, who are waiting for Clyne to come back. Can't imagine Liverpool's representatives down in Vegas.. 😛
