Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Bojan Krkic

Former Barcelona starlet Bojan Krkic certainly isn’t your archetypal Stoke signing, yet it wasn’t long before the Spanish forward acclimatised to his unfamiliar surroundings at the Britannia. Beyond a five-match bedding in period, Bojan flourished in behind a central striker, bagging four goals in his subsequent 11 league starts.

Unfortunately, Bojan’s season was cut short near the midway point after he sustained knee ligament damage during a 4-1 FA Cup win over Rochdale where the Potters playmaker was again amongst the goals. As he closes in on a return to action, we’ve high hopes for his Fantasy potential in the season ahead…

Key Factors

  • Bojan has spent the last few months undertaking a rehabilitation program back in Spain in an attempt to ready himself for pre-season. After missing the final 16 Gameweeks of the previous campaign, the La Masia graduate is confident he’ll recover in time for Stoke’s opener against Liverpool. Crucially, Bojan believes Hughes’ decision to not deploy him on the wing (his enforced role during loan spells at Roma and AC Milan) is the chief reason why he’s thriving in the Premier League, having netted all his goals last term while playing in “the hole”:

“I feel good. It’s been four and a half months from that knee injury. Now I’m enhancing muscle tone and I hope to return in time for the start of the season. Before the injury I was playing with continuity in a competitive league – and thanks to Mark Hughes finally I was used in my role, not like in Italy. I am a striker or at least a playmaker behind the front man, certainly not a wide man. But with Rome and Milan, I was only playing on the wings. I can do it, I did do it, but it’s not the same thing.”

  • Bojan struggled to make an instant impact upon his arrival at the Staffordshire club, chalking up just five appearances (three starts) and delivering zero attacking returns during the opening 10 Gameweeks. The Potters’ 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 11 proved to be a turning point for the Spain international, with his penetrating run from the halfway line and resultant 25-yard shot alerting naysayers to his obvious potential. Bojan then went on to score against Arsenal, Everton and Leicester City in his subsequent 10 starts, inspiring Stoke to victory in all four of those matches. Add an assist against Burnley into the equation, and Bojan was directly involved in 41.7% of Stoke’s goals over that stretch.

  • Considering that Bojan’s winner against Everton came through a spot-kick while Mame Biram Diouf and Jonathan Walters were on the pitch, it appears that the Spaniard tops the penalty hierarchy. Bojan’s attacking potential from set-pieces is boosted further by his involvement with corners and free-kicks – between Gameweeks 11 and 22, no Stoke player took more corners (19) than the former Roma man.

  • Finishing the campaign with a relatively paltry tally of 59 points, Bojan looks set to remain around the 5.5 mark. It’s unclear whether he’ll be classified as a midfielder or forward next season, but the presence of Diouf, Peter Crouch and new boy Joselu in Stoke’s forward ranks could shift the balance towards the former, bearing in mind Hughes prefers a more robust figure for the lone striker role.

  • While Bojan’s attacking output in the number ten role garnered most of the attention, it’s worth noting that he also excelled from a playmaking perspective. Among all forwards that registered at least ten appearances last season, only Bobby Zamora (one every 37.4 minutes) could better the Stoke forward’s average frequency of key passes (one every 48.3 minutes). Moreover, Bojan ranked sixth among Stoke’s full roster with regards to total key passes (26), despite clocking just 1255 minutes – a clear sign of how crucial his creativity could be for Hughes’ side next time out.

  • The fixtures are also in Stoke’s favour as Hughes looks to build on last season’s ninth-placed finish. According to our season ticker, the Potters are ranked top for ease of schedule over the opening 11 Gameweeks, with four kind home matches (WBA, LEI, BOU, WAT) allied with trips to the likes of Norwich, Villa and Newcastle.

Hey Doolittle! Came to say bye to you and Wakey. By to all the others as well, those I've acquainted with know that I mean them without a mention, but you two are particularly concerned for a peculiar reason:

last night I saw a dream in which I was discussing a non-existent 60's-80's artist's non-existing songs here with you two (as recognizable individuals).

That's as clear a sign as it gets that I have passed too much time in DZ. I'm not quitting FPL and I will make use of my membership, but I have to seriously bring my forum activity down. I just can't believe I see so non-exciting dreams, and when my dreams get that boring I just have to do something to the time I'm awake.

Good luck in FPL, Lucy, and have a nice summer! And don't spend too much time here, you have sort of work to do that doesn't really just get done in time, you actually have to sit down and do it or when you come to the end of your term you only have years worth of unfinished work on your table and no time to finish it.

If you find me here in the next hour (14-15 PM CET), I promise I'll bet the money I won on Sweden's U21 title, stake included, on Depay finishing as the PL top scorer.

See ya! I don't threaten to leave completely. I just bring this activity down. I hated to see that dream. Particularly as I was listening to this pretty cool non-existent song in it, but when I woke up we had a radio on and I lost it immediately before I could even try to hum it consciously so I could write it down. Damn! No upsides in that dream then.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Fantasy Premier League Football better than real Premier League football?

Given that the top four are most years the same teams, given that the same teams battle relegation and the same teams end up mid table is there a case for saying that Fantasy Football is now more exciting than the actual games and Premier League table itself?

Do you still enjoy watching Premier League matches for what they are, football matches? Or do you enjoy them more due to their role in Fantasy football matches, with assists and clean sheet points bettering a victory or superb goal?

Supporting my football team is of utmost importance. FPL just enriches my enjoyment of football as a sport. I would never watch a football match just for FPL purposes, I have to enjoy the game too. I turned off a few dull matches last season, even when it mattered to my FPL team.

I've said before that I probably enjoy football less with FPL. With real football, it's pretty simple - if Everton win, I'm happy. In FPL, I've had 80 point weeks and still been disappointed that I've captained or transferred out the wrong player.

My main aim for this season, above strategies and rank, is to just enjoy the game. I think that's something many of us on here are guilty of failing with a lot of the time.

Previously I have been watching MOTD as a kind of torture to see where all the points that my FPL team should have had disappeared to. This coming season will be different now that Bournemouth are in the Premier League, as I will get to enjoy the goals and assists from Matt Ritchie as both a fan and a FPL addict. Please don't bookmark this, 😉

I've little interest in the Premier League for the reasons that Jonty cited - and stacks of others besides, such as the permanent sense of spoiled entitlement from armchair big team fans who would struggle to pick out 'their' club on an atlas.

Not liking what the Premier League has done to English football is the reason why I feel fine about playing Fantasy Premier League. If the clubs themselves are simply going to reduce football to a ream of statistics ("Highest transfer fee ever!" "Biggest TV contract ever!"), then why not play a fantasy game that does exactly the same?

I wouldn't dream of playing Fantasy Football based on a league to which I have an emotional bond, as I feel that FPL distorts your perception of the game itself. Just because Tony Pulis gets you Fantasy points, for example, doesn't make him a good manager in reality, nor will it make André Wisdom a decent right-back.

I'm in a weird position: I stopped watching european football many years ago, and started watching american football instead. I'm a Norwegian, so I had no solid tie to any spesific club. I supported ManU based on a coincident.

Now, 15 years later, I'm not connected to any club. The only reason I joined fpl last season was because my friends play. Having a beer and a laugh on a saturday with good friends is reason enough for me.

So, I am all FPL, no PL!

Honestly I cant remember how it was to watch PL without FPL, but I know I didnt pay for full tv coverage before, so it that sense their "free" fpl game pays off for the league.

      Cons:
I turn off even high profile games when my mini-league rivals striker scores. Cant stand it.

      Pros:
I walk nervously around in circles monday night in front of a lame stoke-wba goalless draw on TV just waiting for the final whistle and those damm 6 points I so deserve after a frustrating weekend. Best feeling there is, when it goes in.

I'm a Brighton fan so my interest in which team does well in the Premier League is only of passing interest. The Championship is the league where I actually care about league positions and which teams win.

This is why for me as well as the reasons mentioned around predictability I much prefer FPL to actual Prem League matches.

There are the occasional good story, a wonder goal in the 93rd minute, Gerrard getting sent off after two minutes that spark my interest, as well as those rare incredible moments of skill. But on the whole I find Prem Lg football just one part of my enjoyment of Fantasy Premier League football.

Now, ask me again this time next year when Brighton are preparing for their return to top flight football and I suspect I'll have a different view. 😉

He looked knackered as soon as he walked on the pitch. SuperFletch was indeed an impressive looking chap. That was during a very long period in the lower leagues for Brighton when our players were really small....when they walked on next to the likes of Fletcher I feared for these little lads safety.

While I agree with Lucy that my football team ALWAYS comes first, I have to also agree with KONIG LUTHER in that FPL enhances the real PL allowing me to watch more matches than I would do without FPL.

Example - a Stoke vs West Ham match I would otherwise have no interest in becomes enthralling if I have some of their players in my FPL team.

Oh yeah. Real football bores the pants off me these days. I can hardly bare to watch it tbh. It doesn't stop me from pretending I know what I'm talking about on here though. I think I'm turning into Jimmy Armfield, I obviously knew a bit once but these days I mostly get things wrong. Like saying West Ham would struggle in their new stadium. Thankfully that one went unnoticed. 🙂

FPL gets me up at an absurd hour in the middle of the night to see how my players get on. I only started taking a proper interest in the EPL because of FPL. In saying that it has also increased my interest in English football and has caused me to become more of an EPL fan.

Having a preference for La Liga, I'd have to say FPL is definitely a catalyst for my over indulgence in watching EPL games I'd normally skip.

Which one of those is better than Austin, though?

He's also worth more than £12m so very glad we kicked that back.

Newcastle need to come in with a bid now. Wonder if Leicester will come back with an improved offer. Must say, they were not on my radar for potential Austin buters!

There's been some strange transfers this window

Petr Cech (Arsenal) - Why sell to arguably your biggest rival for just 10mil? Why not wait til an offer from abroad come in? Could end up biting Chelsea....

Negredo (Valencia) - £21mil for a 29-year old that scored 5 goals during his loan spell 😕

David Henen (Everton) - sold to Olimpiakos last season, immediately loaned out to Everton, then Olimpiakos sell him for £200,000.... why even bother?

Karim Rekik (Marseille) - home-grown and a fairly decent defender at only 20, sold for £4mil 😯

I thought £10mill for Cech was plenty.

Negredo, now that is mad unless they're playing pass the tax liability or the FIFA rules on money.

Yeah Cech was a good deal for both clubs, I just think selling to a London rival that could challenge for the league this year is a bold move

      2. Camp No No
        • 10 Years

When they loaned Negredo they agreed on an obligation to buy the player in the end of the loan spell, so this was going to happen in any case. Don't know why they agreed on that price though. Something fishy about that.

I remember hearing something that the deal for Negredo was agreed last year, and would go through at the end of last season, after his loan ended. Plus I believe Valencia are pretty darn rich

Cech wanted to stay in London, so Abramovich honoured his wishes in return for his services.

it's great for me as a ST ticket holder

I work Sundays and was expecting to have to book a day off, now I don't have to

still 5:30 rather than 12:45 does seem an odd time for a game that big, but the police must have okayed it

Anyone else planning a similar strategy to last year:

      GW1: Auto-complete
      GW2: Wildcard
      GW3: Delete account

Regarding the Friday night fixture, I've just seen this:
'@owen_g: Aston Villa will play Man Utd on Friday Aug 14 due to EDL march on Aug 15. But regular Fri night matches don't start until 16/17 season.'

Going to be a massive change for FPL that year - very interesting

Do you think? Can't see it myself. I've normally sorted all my plans by then anyway. Very rare that i change anything on a Saturday morning

most of us on here are like that but I think that generally most of the casuals tend to do their transfers on Saturday morning unless someone got a massive haul the week before causing a mass knee-jerk

It's good for me as I'm usually milling around on a Friday night weighing up options

a 7:30pm deadline will force me to be more decisive

Give the PL another season or two and games will be put on at 9am UK time on a Thursday or something equally daft just so that it's at a convenient time for TV advertisers abroad.

Yeah I can just see it -

'Great news football fans! - games will now be at 10am to cater for the Asian market!"

Well the night games don't suit any markets outside of Europe.

Really? Surely it helps the N.American market?

In the middle of a working day? The weekends, yeah, but not Friday/Monday nights.

But the afternoon games are perfect. Early morning in the Americas, afternoon in Europe (duh) and evening in Asia (presumably their biggest market). Would have to give the best global coverage. The night games completely rule out the Asian markets.

That Friday night deadline is probably good for me

saves me milling around on a Friday night debating who to buy

Also, United's first 6 games are all on tv and luckily for me not a single home game on a Sunday until at least October
