Moving Target

Moving Target – Jonny Evans

Tony Pulis continued the reshaping of his West Brom squad on Saturday with the signing of Jonny Evans from Manchester United in a deal reported to be worth up to £8 million. The Northern Ireland international has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns, and could make his debut against Southampton on September 12.

Speaking about his latest addition, Pulis spoke of his happiness at being able to bring the experienced defender to West Brom:

“This is a great signing for the club. Jonny brings a lot of experience and will be a big player for us – he’s a player I’ve been watching for some time and we are delighted to have him.”

THE HISTORY

After being spotted playing for his local side Greenisland FC by Man United as a youngster, Evans eventually joined the Red Devils in 2004 after his family relocated to Manchester, with his younger brother Corry also part of the United youth setup.

He made a handful of appearances for the first-team during pre-season in 2006, although Evans then spent the first half of the year on loan at United’s Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp, where he made 11 appearances, scoring two goals. The defender then spent the second half of the 2006/07 campaign on loan at Sunderland, and helped the Black Cats to promotion to the Premier League.

Evans made his United debut in the League Cup against Coventry in September 2007, but was then again sent out on loan to Sunderland for the second half of the 2007/08 season, and helped Roy Keane’s side retain their top-flight status.

The Northern Ireland international never properly established himself as a first choice at Old Trafford, with the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons perhaps being his most successful, when he racked up 52 league appearances, scoring four goals. In total during his time at Old Trafford, Evans managed 131 appearances.

The 27-year-old defender made his international debut against Spain in September 2006 in a memorable 3-2 victory. He currently has 41 caps to his name, and has scored one goal, against Poland in 2009.

THE PROSPECTS

Given his pedigree as a three-time Premier League winner, it’s expected that Evans will command a regular spot at centre-back for the Baggies. He will primarily be competing against James Chester, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson for a place in the starting XI, with Joleon Lescott now out of the picture following his move to Aston Villa. Craig Dawson is expected to remain at right-back after he started the season as a centre-half.

The main reason why Evans may soon be on the radar of Fantasy managers is his kind price tag of 4.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His cost has fallen by 0.2 already this season, having failed to feature so far at Old Trafford, and with Dawson (5.0), McAuley (5.0) and Chester (4.9) all more expensive, looks a great route into the Baggies backline. Olsson is cheaper at 4.5, but while he has started the last three matches, it seems unlikely that the Swede will keep his place in Pulis’ XI. Chris Brunt, who has regularly lined up at left-back for the Baggies under Pulis, is listed as a midfielder in FPL.

Looking at last season’s statistics, Evans is only behind Chester for tackles (2.4 to 2.3) per match out of the four leading contenders, while he averaged 1.8 interceptions per game last term, the same number as McAuley, more than Olsson (1.1), but once again, less than Chester, who managed 2.3 per 90 minutes at Hull. Out of the four players, he ranked second for clearances with 5.1 per match, bettered only by McAuley with 6.1.

West Brom have managed to keep clean sheets in two of their last three matches, although their task was made easier on Saturday with Stoke being reduced to nine men early on at the Britannia. Whilst Pulis’ men have allowed 32 goal attempts from inside their own box this season – which is the eighth most in the top flight – you have to factor in clashes with City and Chelsea already, where they conceded six times.

Indeed, with 12 shut-outs registered in 22 matches under the Welshman so far, there’s no doubt the Baggies defensive assets are worth serious consideration for FPL bosses, particularly given their favourable upcoming fixtures (SOT, avl, EVE, cpl, SUN, nor).

Given that McAuley has started every league match when available for Pulis, he certainly looks a secure pick but if, as expected, Evans partners his fellow Irishman in the heart of the Baggies defence against Southampton next time out, his 0.2% ownership figure should steadily rise over the next few months.

I can see Hazard firing sooner than Sanchez.
Sanchez seems a bit burn out after playing for the national side and without a good prep in pre-season.
While Hazard is only a lack of form, which Mourinho will put right asap.
The gaffer has already pinpointed him, saying he expect Hazard to at least match the level of performance of last year. Its a slap in Hazard face and he'll surely turn up sooner rather than later!

    Krul // McCarthy
    Koscielny // Naughton // Kolarov // Ward // Francis
    Sanchez // Sterling // Pedro // Mahrez // Westwood
    Aguero // Gomis // Wilson

    Thoughts:
    1. Best 4.5m defenders? Liking the look of Ward/Soure for the long term - should the other be someone from Watford? I should be checking rotations...

I've done same thing and gone with Pedro Sanchez and Gomis. I like Ayew but there seem to be more midfield options than strikers at the moment

Exactly my reasoning - I can't fit everyone I want in midfield, and I can't really come up with strikers (Costa would clearly be a gamble).

The keeper situation is tough. I'm going to check out Butland's run based on Spectrum's advice above.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has warned David de Gea he faces missing out on a place at Euro 2016 if he remains on the sidelines at Manchester United.

The goalkeeper is in the squad for the qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia, but has not played for his club in the Premier League this season – something Del Bosque admitted would make it hard to take him to France next summer.

"I hope that he starts playing again and is happy, and if he plays well we can bring him along, otherwise if he doesn't play it will be very difficult for him to come (to the Euros)."

Another trophy-less season, 'in transition' for another year in a row, certain players being given opportunities, others simply ousted because the manager doesn't like him. Terrible football but grinding out results to finish top four and satisfy the owners/traditionalist fans.

There is nothing to be optimistic about.

    C) Tekkers and Targett -> Gomis and Shaw (-4) - have exact funds and it would be a long term move

Repost from a few days ago.

Advice, please? I have £0 ITB, 2 FTs

      Front 8 of:
      Sanchez - Silva - Mahrez - Surman - Depay
      Kun - Gomis - Diouf

      Depay obviously needs to go.
I don't have enough for Pedro, and would quite like Ayew but is that too much reliance on Swansea? An option is to do Gomis to Wilson (?) which would leave funds ITB but not one I really want to do given he has 4 in 4.

Other mid options I guess are Payet, Cabaye, Mane...

      Thoughts appreciated...

        Wilson Aguero Diouf

        1 FT, 0.2 itb

Save the FT? or try to bring in Ayew/Gomis ?

Too many or no popups ?

Instal Adblock plus if you've too many.

If popups not appearing that you want to see, and you've Adblock plus running either disable it or remove it.

For a post-apocalyptic type, The Road by Cormac McCarthy is very good. Along the same lines, Blindness by Jose Saramago and The Plague by Albert Camus are masterpieces.

Could you please rate my WC team?

        Mc Carthy / Butland
        Shaw - Sagna - Monreal - Prodl - ReeceOxford
        Silva - Mané - Pedro - Ayew - Wanyama
        Pelle - Aguero - Mbokani

0,5 ITB plan is to use Pelle's 8 valu as a in/our transfer pawn planning on using the hot FW of the moment could it be Benteke, Martial or others

same applies with mané, easily downgradable to a Toivonen / Siggy etc..

To follow up on the Arsenal opinions, I'm surprised Wenger doesn't give Alexis a chance up top. He plays as a striker for Chile most of the time and played up there with Barcelona as well. Ox/Theo and Ramsey could run the flanks. He may not have an aerial presence but he can definitely hold the ball up pretty well and has great movement/instincts in the box. Decent finisher too but his left foot needs work.

As D1sable says it was tried and failed. His style of play and Arsenal's doesn't suit him as a CF. For better or worse Giroud is Arsenal's best CF.

Sanchez is the best attacking midfielder/number 10.

Sanchez #10 = essential and a brilliant captain option.

Sanchez LW = not good value and a poor captain option.

                That's it in a nutshell.

Yea I agree thats his best position and it showed when Ozil was hurt last season but hes not taking Ozil's spot unfortunately.

I dont really remember him playing up there for Arsenal but I may be wrong. I guess when Giroud got hurt at the beginning of the season? I do remember thag Leicester game where Gru got benched and we all brought him to cap him and he ended up gettin hurt

He did against us (Everton) I remember and it didn't work at all, we went 2-0 up. Then Giroud came on and completely turned it around, including scoring in the last minute.

I think people (not accusing you of this) forget that a striker, particularly a lone striker, is a specialised position, you can't just throw any good attacking player up there. Same thing I remember when people suggested Rooney should be in central midfield, or Gerrard could be a great DM; the top players in these positions have been honing their skills for years.

I agree, I'm a big advocate on putting players in their natural position. Same reason why I think LvG is nuts for constatntly moving the pieces around.

Been following Alexis forever now, and hes def not a natural striker. I just think given Ox's form and their lack of goals right now, it could be an option bc he can play up there in some situations vs certain teams like Stoke with no Shawcross this next GW could be a good bet. But vs other teams like City who are really physically solid it would not be ideal

Run your AV scan. Backup any necessary files. Your AV software might remove any problems. If you get sorted don't try retoring your backed up files before running a virus check on them.

Moses looks a bargain - will he play constantly ?

Been quite a few seasons since he played more than 50%+ of games

        W HAM with everyone fit...

        ..........Sakho....Carroll..........

        .....Payet................Moses...
        ..........Noble.....Kouyate.......
        .................Song..................
        Cresswell.Reid..Ogbonna..Jenks
        ..................Adrian.................

Subs: Randolph, Tomkins, Obiang, Lanzini/Antonio, Carroll/Sakho, Valencia

For me, that's the best team they can field at the moment:

        Adrian
        Jenks Reid Ogbonna Cresswell
        Nobes Kouyate
        Antonio Payet Moses
        Sakho

The only players who are guaranteed a place are: Adrian, Cresswell, Reid, Kouyate and Payet in my opinion.

Have this front 8 ATM with 1FT

        Sanchez | Pedro | Ayew | Mahrez | Chadli

        Aguero | Gomis | Wilson

I can't figure out who to bench this week and am highly considering playing the AOA Chip. If I play the AOA chip I have to bench on of these 3:

        A) Darmian (LIV)
        B) Jenkinson (NEW)
        C) Kolarov (cpl)

Or I could use my free transfer, was also considering doing

        1) Jenkinson > Francis to free up funds and play AOA without a headache that I'll have points on the bench.
        2) Chadli > >£5.0m Mid to bench and play 3-4-3 (Chadli has Sunderland next and is a good differential at the moment...)

        Thoughts? Thanks!

@msfootballnews When @SkyFootball tell us the transfer fees on SSN they include Raheem Sterling's addons but don't include Anthony Martial's addons. Strange

@msfootballnews They say Sterling cost £49 million and Martial cost £36 million. Why include add ons in one transfer but not in another on a factual piece?

Yep, just commented on that on Twitter. I've seen other news outlets do it, and if there's any consistency Martial should be the £50m man, or Sterling £44m. Seems like they like to set certain players up to fail more than others.

Quite a big difference tbh Doolittle. As I say below, Sterling conditions will be met by the end of the season, and some could already have been met (something like scoring a goal, or completing a very low number of minutes). Martial's conditions won't be met any time soon, and possibly never.

3 PLs and a CL for Sterling, plus £500k for every 30 appearances, won't be met for years, if ever!

£500k/30 appearances (PL + CL) up to £2M, those £2M will be paid in 3-4 seasons mate, unless Sterling flops, in which case the initial price was too much.

They pay £1M for each PL. I bet that the conditions for the first £2M of the add-ons will be met by the end of the next season unless Sterling gets badly injured. They've got 88 CL + PL matches guaranteed in that time. Sterling to appear in 60, and City to win the title this season or next one. Very likely, imo.

But compare it Martial becoming one of the best players in Europe. Sure if Sterling plays most league matches and CL matches then you're talking around 40 appearances. Plus if they win the league that's another million. By then end of this season (seeing as they're front runners for there league now) they could pay out 1.5 million of the promised 5.

Or, in fact, the best player on planet. That's what the last €10M will be paid for.

So, you've got a player who's better than Messi, how much you paid for him? €80M. Bargain!

That's how it goes if those add-ons will be paid.

Exactly. They're very ambitious targets, I just hope he winds up a useful player 😛

Or think of the goal bonuses. How much must he score to win the Golden boot, when Spain is valued equal to England? 30? 40? So, how much extra would a club like ManU pay for their striker to have a 40, or even 30 goal season? €5M? Without blinkin an eye, I'm sure.

Martial's add ons re up to 80million Euros. This is the fee which Monaco have published. It includes winning the Ballon D'or. The reason Sterling has the add ons included I that Liverpool can show that they have got the highest possible fee.

Yup, the initial price (€60M) already is above the quoted £36M, unless Euro has sunk deeper than last time I checked.

Lyon chairman Aulas also affirms this price level as his team got 20% of plus value which is said to be "over €10M" and apparently precisely €11M (added to the money they get automatically for having formed the player). So, €11M*5=€55M plus value, add the initial transfer price that Monaco paid to Lyon, €5M, makes €60M.

And are Sterling's add ons contingent on him being top goal scorer, golden boot winner and Balon d'Or winner? Or are they simple appearance based bonuses that will be 100% achieved by the end of the season?

          Stark difference in my opinion.

This is a good point. Who knows what Sterlings add-ons are?

So 2 million for appearances, and 3 million for PL and/or CL wins.

Does "success" and "triumph" mean "winning the competition"? Anyway, these area likely to be paid, all of them, by 3 PL titles and 120 matches in PL+CL competitions, within next 5-7 years, even if Sterling didn't do really well. Then again, if City can win 3 PL titles in 6 years, who cares? They're made of money anyway.

I'm assuming so but can't confirm it. Aye, it is pretty much dependent on City doing well as a team compared top Martial becoming one of the best players in the league/Europe. I'd rather they didn't include any of these add ons in quoted fees tbh, because they vary so much from player to player. Should simply be £44M plus £5 in potential add ons.

In fact, are the conditions of add-ons affirmed somewhere? I have not seen anything official about them. Nor about the exact fee.

Can someone link me up to the UCL fantasy game for this season? Google directing me to last year's game.
        Cheers.

Amazed that a footballer can come back from either a ruptured acl or pcl in six months. These guys are fit, and science must have improved. I've ruptured both my acls, more than once (I'm a bit of a case....), and no way could I have played active sports within six months. Cool!
