This Much We Know – Gameweek 37

There may be four more fixtures remaining in the Gameweek but there’s still plenty of lessons learned to mull over this Monday lunchtime. The battle to beat the drop could be over before the weekend, the race for second remains very much alive, West Ham’s defence needs addressing, Southampton and Swansea’s midfielders are already on our 2016/17 Watchlists, whilst Alan Pardew and Louis van Gaal have plenty to ponder ahead of the FA Cup final.

St Totteringham’s Day could be on the cards after all…

Alexis Sanchez’ late leveler at the Etihad spoiled Manuel Pellegrini’s final home match in charge of City and put Arsenal firmly in the driving seat to clinch third spot. The Gunners’ 2-2 draw, allied with Tottenham’s home capitulation against Southampton, now gives Arsene Wenger’s side everything to play for next Sunday at home to whipping boys Villa – should they defeat the relegated midlands side and Spurs lose at Newcastle, Arsenal will clinch second and finish above their north London rivals yet again. We can expect a full-strength line-up from Wenger, then, with Alexis Sanchez’ armband potential looking more appealing as the hosts go for the jugular at the Emirates.

Spurs’ morale could cost them…

With Mousa Dembele joining Dele Alli on the sidelines through suspension, Tottenham scuppered the chance to seal second with a 2-1 loss to Southampton – the first time they’ve tasted defeat in eight home fixtures. A final day trip to St James’ Park is no easy task, either – Newcastle have yet to lose in front of their own fans under Rafa Benitez and could potentially be playing the last home match before slipping into the Championship. Given that Harry Kane’s record without Dembele in the starting lineup now stands at one goal in ten, Pochettino’s men have it all to do to remain ahead of Arsenal next Sunday.

Koeman looks to have struck a winning formula…

Southampton took full advantage of Tottenham’s travails by heaping more misery on Mauricio Pochettino’s men with a 2-1 win at the Lane. The St Mary’s side have now won three successive fixtures since Ronald Koeman decided to drop Graziano Pelle and opt for more mobility up front. The Saints are now just three points behind fifth-placed United ahead of their trip to Palace. Steven Davis was the latest to benefit with a finely-taken brace on Sunday, whilst Sadio Mane, Shane Long and Dusan Tadic – who has racked up an eye-catching two goals and five assists over those trio of fixtures – have already staked a claim for our Watchlist consideration come 2016/17.

The Black Cats are nearly there…

In a weekend where relegation rivals Norwich and Newcastle both failed to find the net, Sunderland showed their character by twice coming from behind to place themselves on the verge of safety. The Wearsiders 3-2 win over Chelsea hands them the chance to seal their survival as early as this Wednesday – defeat Everton at the Stadium of Light and Big Sam has served up yet another great escape. Such a scenario could, potentially, lead to rotation near the bottom as all three sides would head into Gameweek 38 with far less to play for next weekend, with morale at Norwich and Newcastle surely hit hard by their impending relegations.

The race for fourth could change Van Gaal’s plans…

With one eye on the upcoming FA Cup final, the United boss rested Marcus Rashford and Daley Blind for the trip to Norwich, whilst Anthony Martial was a late call-off due to a minor injury. The Red Devils’ 1-0 win at Carrow Road, allied with City’s draw at home to Arsenal, however, now places Van Gaal’s side in pole position for the midweek trip to West Ham. Indeed, even a loss at Upton Park would still leave the Red Devils in the race for fourth spot heading into their Gameweek 38 home encounter with Bournemouth. Given the importance of that clash to their Champions League aspirations, the Dutchman may now decide against rest and rotation for the final two fixtures.

Pardew has a Wembley dilemma …

With Wilfried Zaha still sidelined due to a hamstring problem, Alan Pardew’s decision to freshen up his options at home to Stoke sparked Palace’s attack back into life ahead of their FA Cup final clash with United. Handed a rare start alongside Connor Wickham, Dwight Gayle threw his name into the hat for a Wembley start by grabbing both goals in a 2-1 win. Bearing in mind that the Eagles had scored just twice in their previous five league outings, Pardew may well be tempted to stick with the Wickham/Gayle combination for next weekend at least as the Selhurst Park side make their way to St Mary’s.

Howe has yet to find a first choice XI…

With the treatment room near empty, Eddie Howe was able to welcome back the fit-again Max Gradel for the home clash against West Brom, with the likes of Matt Ritchie, Callum Wilson and Josh King all utilised as subs. Ritchie’s late leveler extended his lead as the Cherries’ top-scoring attacker for the season, though as we look towards 2016/17, it’s fair to say that the Bournemouth manager has numerous options at his disposal in the final third. If his squad can steer clear of long-term injuries, it’ll be intriguing to see if Howe will establish a pecking order in attack or chop and change to keep his players happy.

Ayew will battle Siggy for our Swansea affections…

With Gylfi Sigurdsson sidelined for the final two fixtures due to a shoulder problem, Andre Ayew’s back-to-back double-figure hauls have helped push the Ghana international ahead of his Swansea team-mate once again. A goal and assist in the 4-1 rout of West Ham, in addition to the brace at home to Liverpool last time out, propelled the former Marseille man into joint-seventh in the midfield standings – three points above the Icelandic international ahead of a home encounter with Man City. There may be uncertainty over the Swansea manager for next season but there’s no question that both Ayew and Sigurdsson look equally capable options for 2016/17.

Bilic needs to sort his defence out…

Whilst West Ham’s attack has received the plaudits in recent weeks, Saturday’s chastening home loss to Swansea served as a reminder that there’s plenty of work to do at the back. The 4-1 defeat means Slaven Bilic’s side have just one clean sheet in eight now, with the Croatian’s experiment to field Michail Antonio as a right-back ensuring his defence remains increasingly porous. For the sake of Antonio and the Hammers’ clean sheet prospects, we need Bilic to reconsider for 2016/17 and shift the former Forest man back onto the flank, thus allowing him to wreak havoc in the final third again.

Any likely West Ham changes for the match at home to Man U?
Bilic was reported as being "furious" about the performance vs. Swansea.

Bilic seemed more concerned that some players were not putting the effort in, rather than playing badly.
I hope he was not talking about Payet.

A lot to consider before our final transfers of the season. Southampton look the obvious choice for investment but also think triple Arsenal (ideally with 2 attackers) is a must - could be a mauling at the Emirates.

Tough one, Ramsey has the ability to score a couple on his day, or possibly take punt on Walcott - could start with Welbeck and AOC out, or could even luck into starting up top (though unlikely now Giroud is back on the scoresheet). Either way I'd expect Theo to get decent minutes next week.

I think Giroud is a good pick - can see Arsenal putting 4 or 5 past Villa and you'd expect Giroud to be involved in at least a couple of those.

Ozil is expected to play and should do well. A possible brace or more from Giroud is better than the likely assists Ozil will manage though. Ozil is the safer pick, but if chasing in a ML I would go Giroud I think.

I like the Ramsey pick, him or iwobi.

Ramsey likes to run in late to the box for cut backs against the weaker teams and I'm not convinced that Villa will remember to pick him up.

I wish it were but that's not my reading of it, cptcrunch11.

What they're calling a 'matchday' is each round of games (across multiple days). There are three matchdays in the group stages, then a matchday for the Round of 16 etc You pick a starting XI for the matchday and you're stuck with it until the next matchday, at which point you'll get a few transfers.

So no stick/twist fun. The format is almost identical to FPL but without bonus points. Which is a shame because I really enjoyed the crazy squad games of the world cup and so on. Made a nice change from FPL and added more room for manoeuvre in a short tournament.

I disagree. He built that Barca side.

He may have inherited half the players, but he shipped the deadwood quickly, put a system in place, and gave the team what it needed. Barca weren't a bad side before him, but he put them up a level.

He also transformed Bayern, for better or worse is a different discussion which we can only really quantify in 2 or 3 years time.

Hey, if he didn't train all the players since they were kids (which he of course did to some of the Barca players, but let's skip that), preferably fathered at least some of them too, he didn't build the team.

I agree, I believe he is overrated and I don't think he can really view his time at Bayern as a success when he had THAT group of players for 3 years and never reached a CL final.
(Harsh as that may be, after all he succeeded at Bayern in terms of playing style)

However, I also think it's ridiculous to say he has "Never built a team in his life." after what he achieved at Barca following the transformation he put that team through... It's an argument I've seen banded about quite a bit.

It remains to be seen whether he can do it "away from home" as he was so synonymous with Barcelona (and their youth system) when he took over.. It could be a completely different story at City.

Listen, if you inherit Messi, Xavi, Busquets and Iniesta all approaching their prime then how can you go wrong? That is a once-in-a-generation constellation of midfielders.

What did he do when Mourinho 'broke' tiki-taka and he saw his team beginning to fade? He ran away to New York for a year. Had he rebuilt Barcelona to overcome that challenge then it would be a different story. But he didn't.

As for Bayern, he took over a team that had just won the treble (Bundesliga, German Cup, CL) and took them backwards.

He has never built a team and his reputation way outstrips his achievements.

I get your point and he obviously benefited from work done prior to his appointment, but that doesn't mean he just strolled in and said "keep it up lads, you're doing great, just tweak one or two small things".

He had also worked with those players in the youth academy. Xavi and Iniesta were fully integrated into the squad already but he was the main reason behind growing Messi into the world-beater we all know today, he shipped Ronaldinho + Deco first of all, and then Eto'o at a later stage, pushing the marquee signing of golden-boy-of-spain David Villa out wide left in order to prioritise Messi. He also shipped Yaya Toure in favour of the then-unknown Sergio Busquets and brought Pique into the side.

But that's all about the individual players and the most remarkable thing Guardiola did was impose a sense of togetherness within that team, he built their spirit, revived the "Total Football" tiki taka philosophy at the club, brought discipline to the players (something that had been lacking) and was extremely successful in doing so.

Mourinho never broke Tiki-Taka, Barcelona won the league all three years in a row, comfortably having the upper hand over Mourinho despite his "anti-football" tactics and off-pitch allegations / controversy. It was horrible being on the Madrid side of things at that point in time. Guardiola didn't "run away", that's a hugely presumptuous thing to suggest, he had put his whole life on hold to achieve what he did with Barca for 3 years and then he needed to take a step back for his health.. (apparently, but whatever the reason it wasn't due to fear of Mourinho).

I agree to a point about Bayern, I think he took on an impossible task. He inherited the best team in Europe at the time and was tasked with changing their style of play whilst keeping them just as successful, and he failed in the second half of that agreement.

So overall, yes, I think he's overrated, as he essentially failed at Bayern and is seen as the "saviour" coming to cure Man City, which he won't achieve immediately as they're the worst team he's managed..
However, to discredit him of all of the amazing achievements at Barcelona is selective memory imo, he is an extremely talented manager..

I am purely talking about my personal opinion. Apologies for the lapse in memory regarding pep's final year, I don't think it renders my entire view on the topic as false however.
As a Madrid fan it feels weird "defending Pep's honour" online but I just feel he is suffering a whiplash after failing so badly at Bayern in comparison to what he achieved at Barca,
I'm not writing him off yet anyway.

Busquets was 20 and Pep gave him his first team debut. This was after bringing him into Barca B a year previously. Pep made Busquets what he is today.

He is the most hated player for me in the history of football. Absolutely overrated and utterly useless. I know i am quite possibly alone in this, but i absolutely hate the way he plays football. Last time he passed the ball forward was in u 13.

I agree. I don't really keep up with European football beyond the headlines so to me, all I see is a guy who has done well by playing the game on 'easy' setting. Winning La Liga with Barca or Bundesliga with Bayern doesn't really say anything one way or t'other about a man's skills. Winning the Premier League (with any team) will be the first test he's faced that I recognise as a test.

I would have to disagree a little bit, winning the title with that barca team wasnt "easy" setting. He built that team in the era dominated by Real Madrid and created the Barca superpower team that was demolishing everyone.

I am not a fan of Pep tho, for a few reasons, but his success cant be just neglected due to the fact he was managing barca and Bayern. With Bayern he didnt win CL granted, but he has had seasons that are best in history when it comes to Bundesliga based on points i believe. Not easy to do.

I guess that's where my lack of in depth knowledge fails me. I (wrongly) recall Barca being 'up-there' when he took over. So there are achievements there. I guess I just don't rank those achievements in the same bracket as winning a truly competitive league, where there's more than one or two genuine contenders to worry about. But we'll see that in the next couple of seasons.

Well you are half-way right. Barca is ALWAYS up there. Its not like he managed Wigan to the title lets be honest, but he did turn Barca after an era into a powerhouse.

Him coming to EPL will just bring the quality of entertainment more and the "likeability" of the league to a different level i believe.

Benitez. You never fail to disappoint me. Now you managed to ruin Villa's perfect run of losses to the end of the season. How could you? Okay, Newcastle didn't have the advantage to play against Guzan which would have all but guaranteed goals, but still, you could have expected them to at least try more attack wise against a team of Villa's quality.

my prob is he still has his TC chip and I used mine this week on carrol so hoping for the best. of the remaining games this gw I have fab hazard pva ddg rashford payet lanzini carrol .
He has smalling firmino milner martial payet cresswell..

He will surely tc sanchez in the last gw. any recommendations on what I can do or should do? or am I doomed?

      do you have sanchez?
if you are still within 11 points a sanchez cap for you would reduce his chance of winning it with just his points, that way you can try and beat him with the other players.
I wouldn't even be afraid to take a hit for one of the spton boys. chances are he may try and hold his lead

you just need to get Sanchez and captain him. you have far more DGW players so should extend your lead a bit. all you can do for now, don't go hit-daft in 38 anyway. a southampton mid would be good.

sorry just realised you are behind. my point still stands - there's a good chance you'll be top by the end of this GW. you still need to get Sanchez in, a TC double / hat trick for a player you don't own at that stage is game over

        LLoris
        smalling cresswell simpson
        sanchez (tc) payet mahrez firmino/milner
        martial defoe lukaku.
He has 1ft and I think he may get giroud in for martial or one of the Liverpool boys out for a Southampton player. so I need to be careful

My team for the final gw will be
        DDG
        bellerin Gabriel pva (Delaney simpson)
        hazard mane payet sanchez (lanzini)
        aguero carrol rashford

Happened to Torres when he won the golden boot cause he got a hatty in the world cup/Euros. Cant remember exactly.

He was joint goal scorer as he put 4 past another crappy team he played in the box round. Then came on in the last 10 mins of the final game and got an assist which took him above someone else.

Do you think actually watching the games/highlights gives you a better chance of a better rank, as opposed to just viewing the stats? Hardly watched any games this year but it doesn't seem to have affected my score too much because I've been perusing the data/form/fixtures etc....

Both are useful.. I've barely gotten to see any football this season and my rank has suffered as a result.

Depends on your playing style too, I don't depend on stats as much as others, I use them as a guide to which players I should watch in real life.

I listen to a lot of full games rather than watch them. If you have good commentary (ie not Alan Green) then that really helps. I've picked up loads of good advice on players and teams there. I still watch highlights on MOTD as well. That's proved invaluable as well. This season it has been especially good for Leicester players. Stats and results tell you one thing, but you need to see Vardy's pace and relentless pursuit of goal and Mahrez's skill to know that they are the real deal.

I think even more important, although impractical is to watch games first hand. That is why the fans eye view articles that Bolivian Seaman does are so good. The fans can pick up on a change of player attitude, or tactics far quicker than sometimes the summarises or the stats can.

When I was on the other side of the world and barely watching a game I had by far my best season. Instead of overthinking things I just let FPL points and fixtures dictate my game, less personal hunches and in-depth stats.

Last year's winner Simon March didn't watch a single match the entire season iirc.

However, it takes the joy out of football for me, I prefer watching live matches on tv, if not then highlights. Stats serve as a check whether the player on eye test is doing reasonably and not just performing in that single match. Watching just highlights can sometimes skew our opinion.

I think you need to be cautious about the use of stats because they necessarily rely on very small sample sizes. It isn't like baseball where a hitter has 600+ plate appearances per season.

I probably watch half of the season live on TV, maybe even 55%. That helps me to be in top 10K. I watch MOTD for the matches that I miss in a gameweek. I could not imagine myself to play Fantasy with just watching the stats. I would feel lika a blind person.

It's also way less fun to watch your player score from a post on here or a tweet than to watch it go in yourself in real time. Without mentioning the reason we actually play FPL which is because we love football and the Premier League

I watch 5-7 matches a weekend (although "watching" is a loose term for keeping tabs on 3 of the 3pm matches at once) and definitely think it helps. Stats are useful too but I would much rather see a player getting into good positions and taking fewer shots than a bunch of shots that have no power or are nowhere near the target

I agree with what some have said, it's certainly more fun watching games. Having said that I do think this game is basic enough to not have to. I don't mean that to sound negative I just mean that how players/teams actually perform can sometimes not actually matter in Fpl terms.

In short, my answer would be no. I quite often go weeks without watching football, and seem to do better during these periods. I will watch MotD purely for interest in games, and picking a player based on highlights can be too short term and bandwagon.

My game is very much, Stats/Form/Fixtures/Planning based.

I have to agree with this, it is possible to do well without watching any actual game footage. It may even be better not to. This year I've watched very few games or highlights and will have my highest place finish yet. Taking into account statistics, form, trends, fixtures and good planning is far more important than watching any games or highlights. There is also a possibility that an individuals own interpretation of games they watch is inaccurate, compared to someone who makes decisions based on statistics. Additionally highlights can misrepresent a players' or a teams' form or abilities by only showing a select few moments from a game and not the game as a whole. And unless you watch all the games each gameweek you may be overly influenced by the games you did watch and make your decisions with a bias towards them.

I haven't watched many and pushing 1k; I also only look at data on the fpl site.

Primarily I listen to people on FFS, along with watchlist, etc.

There are many ways to play and the more input the better. That said I think after you have a working knowledge of players, coaches, and fpl scoring you can get by quite well without watching much or at all!

Think collecting as much knowledge/information as possible is best.
But as moneyball points out it's difficult to be objective when you see someone play.

Personally prefer reading predictive and player models from statisticians on twitter.

I've watched as much football as possible this season because I'm a football fan and I enjoy it. It's also useful for scouting FPL players. Many players were brought in based on watching their performances live and on MOTD (Ighalo, Payet, Mahrez, Toby, Alli etc etc). What's the point of playing FPL if you don't enjoy watching football?

Cool question. I'm definitely a believer myself. Stats do not show you the quality of what a player is producing. I captained Costa this week for example and I can't believe so few people took a punt on him after his performance against Spurs.

I'm a football fan first and foremost, which means I watch as many of the EPL games as possible. Usually watch 1 game in every timeslot, so 3 on Saturdays and 2 on Sundays.

I don't think watching a game necessarily makes somebody a better FPL player, but a player with decent stats usually must pass the eye-test for me before I bring them in.

Great topic. Previously I've used a combination of MOTD, stats and the advice of you lovely people on here. Recently though, I've paid for a couple of weekly NowTV subscriptions and seen some of the games live and I think that it definitely helps.

Stats can be incredibly skewed; trying to use them to pick Carrol or Payet to TC this gameweek being the perfect example! (Thank God I used my eyes and chose the latter).

Re the top goal scorer award:

The award will be shared if two or more players end up on the same amount of goals.

This could very well happen with Kane (25 goals), Vardy (24) and Aguero (24) all still in the race.

          I think your right MaGoo was manager in 95 when he made his debut;
"Born in Leicester, Heskey started his career with Leicester City after progressing through their youth system, making his first team debut in 1995. After winning the League Cup in 1997 and 2000 he made an £11 million move to Liverpool in 2000, which, at the time, was the record transfer fee paid by the club."
