Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Wahbi Khazri

Arriving on Wearside with a reputation as an attacking midfield player who had the potential to deliver both goals and assists, it’s fair to say Wahbi Khazri failed to live up to expectations following his winter transfer from Bordeaux.

The Tunisia international only registered two goals and a pair of assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 14 appearances as Sunderland relied mainly on Jermain Defoe’s output to beat the drop.

Having shown glimpses of his potential, including a stunning volley against Chelsea in Gameweek 37, Khazri may be able to kick on next season as part of a Black Cats outfit that should start the new campaign in more confident mood after making significant strides under Sam Allardyce’s stewardship last time out.

Key Factors

  • Khazri is, first and foremost, a creator of goals, but he also has the ability to provide a decent goal threat. Notably, the Tunisian created a chance every 41.3 minutes – faster than any other player in the Sunderland ranks last season. That rate was also better than the likes of Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson (48.8), Crystal Palace’s Yohan Cabaye (49) and Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic (63.2) between Gameweeks 24 and 38, players who, like Khazri, have strong involvement in set-pieces, but interestingly are very likely to set us back more than the Sunderland man in FPL next season. While Khazri averaged a chance every 46.4 minutes, inferior to the three aforementioned players, he did outperform big names such as Man United’s Juan Mata (52.7), Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (60.9) and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (64.9) over the same period following his arrival in England.
  • As already touched upon, set-pieces are crucial to Khazri’s appeal. The Tunisian totalled 57 corners in his 14 appearances for the Black Cats, while he also registered eight goal attempts from set-plays. Significantly, Khazri will enjoy his first pre-season with Sunderland, which will undoubtedly give Sam Allardyce, a manager renowned for his attention to detail, time to work on further exploiting Khazri’s undoubted quality from dead-ball situations.
  • Allardyce’s impact on Sunderland also looks promising as they look to avoid yet another season battling the drop. The Wearsiders had earned just three points in eight matches prior to Big Sam’s arrival but ended the campaign on a run of just two losses in the final 14 Gameweeks. With transfer targets such as West Ham’s Diafra Sakho eyed up, the Black Cats look to have the finances and ambition to kick on next season and the promise of adding further quality to the forward line in particular should in itself boost the Fantasy prospects of Khazri.
  • The former Bordeaux midfielder was predominantly used on the left of midfield in a 4-1-4-1 formation favoured by Allardyce, having to play a disciplined role in front of left-back Patrick van Aanholt. Should Big Sam look to experiment with different systems such as a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Khazri could offer even more of an attacking threat for the Black Cats. Sunderland won’t start the season under the pressure they faced when the Tunisian arrived on Wearside, and that could also afford Khazri further freedom to showcase his talents.
  • Khazri was priced at 6.0 in FPL last season, and his valuation is unlikely to rise significantly ahead of the new campaign. Given his potential to progress as he fully acclimatises to English football, this could represent terrific value. Sunderland scored 48 goals last season, up considerably on the 31 they managed during the 2014/15 campaign, and the Tunisian midfielder could emerge as an interesting mid-price option should the Black Cats be able to build on their strong finish to the 2015/16 season.
  • Looking at the fixture list, Allardyce’s side have four decent home encounters in the first seven Gameweeks, as Middlesbrough, Everton, Palace and West Brom pay visit. Whilst trips to City, Southampton and Spurs lessen the appeal of Sunderland’s attackers, it’s worth bearing in mind that they scored in all three corresponding matches last year. Indeed, despite winning just three away fixtures in 2015/16, the Wearsiders were surprisingly prolific on the road – they netted 25 times on their travels last term, a tally bettered by only six other sides, and only failed to score in two of their 12 away matches under Allardyce.

Most Boro fans are quite bullish.

Karanka at times was critised last season and there were times that it was with reason, however he always sets us up to be well organised and well drilled. At times we struggled against sides that sat back against us, and Karanka failed to adapt at times, but that's a problem we shouldn't have this season.

It's no accident that we had the best defensive record in the country last season, and that includes a clean sheet in 120 minutes at Old Traffford.

Karanka did his badges with Pochettino and we play in exactly the same style as Spurs (albeit with lesser quality players obviously). A strong back four with attacking full backs, two holding with three behind a one, everybody knows their roles. With the addition of some quality, things look good. Marten De Roon has been brought in to strengthen the midfield - young player tipped for his first Dutch cap after making the most tackles in Serie A last season.

On the attacking front - one of our failings was not killing teams off enough last season and not being a free-scoring team, which is fair. However we did actually create a lot of chances. Before Rhodes came in we had Kike upfront who was limited but worked hard, and Nugent who again worked hard, got a few vital goals however lacked the alertness to create space and opportunities for himself.

Rhodes offered something different when he arrived. His movement was excellent and he found a lot of space which resulted in him getting so many chances, mainly through Ramirez...the trouble was his finishing. It was dreadful. He missed so many chances, this may sound like an exaggeration but it's not..he missed six very good chances on his debut and that continued. He kind of looks like a player that doesn't believe in himself, I'm sceptical as to whether he will make the step up.

Add a Negredo and Ramirez into the mix and it could turn out to be a very nice season indeed - a mid table finish should result in there being a lot of value in Boro players. I beleive that is realistic, but then I am biased!!

I'm thinking I'll definitely take valdes unless he's not nailed in which case, Ayala? Then if Negredo does come in, and Ramirez and Fischer are in, I think he's worth a punt aswell. What do you reckon?

Ramirez will be nailed onto start, once he is confirmed. His stats last season were excellent and will be on free kicks and corners. He blossomed under Karanka and regained some of his old confidence.

I'm hoping Fischer will fulfill his vast potential but I wouldn't be surprised to see him eased into English football, as Karanka tends to do that. Downing will get minutes so there is the option to bring him in slowly...so I would wait to see on Fischer.

Valdes will be nailed. Ayala too, although he has a knock at the moment hopefully he will be fine.

Yeah I'm not interested in Ramirez or fischer, just thinking along the lines of them improving negredos appeal. Although maybe Ramirez is a good 5th mid option?
Yeah I really wanna take valdes then. Which goalkeeper do you think he rotates best with? now mcgregor is out I don't fancy rotating him with jaku?!

Ramirez is interesting me as a fifth midfielder put it that way...

I see. I'm not sure about rotation, I'm going to look more into that once the game is released and I start playing around wit hmy squad. For what it's worth though I don't think this Hull team is any better than the one that got relegated two seasons ago, so I will be staying clear. Certainly with McGregor out. Obviously they could make signings but from the outside looking in things don't look good to me.

He joined on loan in January and got 7 goals in 15 games and only one assist. The assist tally doesn't do him justice as his chance creation for Rhodes was ridiculous, but he kept missing them! He was completely dominating games.

The caveat is that he hasn't really done it in the Premier League yet, however he's now fully fit and Karanka will give him the trust that he never really had at Southampton, and we have the defence to support him that he never had at Hull.

He will be on all set pieces and scored - from the top of my head - at least one free kick for us.

Sounds good. Negredo coming in also boosts his appeal aswell as other way round then.
There's talk that karanka rotates strikers alot, will that happen if negredo comes in or has it just happened in the past cos he's never had someone of negredo's quality?

                        Exactly.

In Karanka's two years at the club we had Kike upfront who went off the boil and lost his place to Bamford who had been playing right wing. Bamford completely established himself as our number 9, to the point where we even picked him half fit for the play off final.

Last season Kike had another chance, but just wasn't good enough so was rotated with Nugent who worked hard but again ultimately lacked quality. We sold Kike and Rhodes came in, but did absolutely nothing to justify being an automatic first choice ahead of Nugent so they were rotated.

The other thing to remember is that in a 46 game season a bit of rotation is necessary. The Championship is an absolute slog.

I'll go on record and say that, fitness permitting, there will be no chance of us rotating Negredo with Rhodes. Negredo will be first choice. With Rhodes coming on to add to the attack when we need a goal.

                        So likelihood of Negredo signing?

Negredo and Benteke moving will really make things interesting for me cos right now I've only got Kun and Wilson in any of my draft striker spots!

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Which of the class of 15/16 do you have great expectations for this season?

Ideally we are looking for players that did reasonably well or showed promise that you think are destined for a great 16/17.

Not sure with the change of manager. Koeman had seemingly found the right balance, the right system, and Tadic was doing great. Mane, Wanyama and Koeman left so I wont play the Tadic card from the start

      Anthony Martial

I think he's got a season of experience under his belt. He barely played in the Euros, as Deschamps oddly preferred the poor man's Giroud and should be a key cog in Mourinho's new look attack

His inconsistency started halfway through the previous season if I remember correctly, he had a long stretch of games not scoring which carried on through this year.

If Arsenal sign a striker or another winger, I reckon it will bring the best out of bim more often

        1. Ziro
          • 9 Years

I think the opposite. He thrives on being the attacking star shooting abd getting goals. A better striker hogging attention and possession would diminish his output.

Didn't he play better with Walcott playing, making run in behind and creating more space for Sanchez?

He seems to get frustrated and run into dead ends when Arsenal can't quite unlock defences.

            1. Ziro

He needs space yes, but he can create his own space too. The normal thing is to improve with better teammates around, but I feel Alexis is one of those star-player-mentality ones. They perform better when there is no one better in the team and hence they are the focal point of attack in spite of attackers.

He started pretty well last season until that horrible injury. United defense was really good last season and it will only improve under Mourinho. Also, Mourinho loves his full backs, so he can get the odd goal/assist. He's the first defender on my team sheet.

A few that have been said, but Mane could thrive under Klopp, Firminho also.

It will be really interesting to see how Koeman develops Ross Barkley, who seems to have completely stalled in terms of development. Leighton Baines could be brought back to our attention too.

Long term admirer of Nathan Redmond too, this could be his time.

KGB. I think he missed the first few games of the last season and was then injured for a while Feb/March time, but with a full season, I expect him to score well. Quality player that will hopefully fill Kun's boots.

Firmino has been mentioned but needs to get gametime. I can see Butland being top keeper.
