Moving Target

Moving Target – Ashley Williams

Everton continued to step up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Swansea defender Ashley Williams for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £11 million.

The 31-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Toffees, and speaking about his latest signing, new Everton manager Ronald Koeman explained why he was so keen to bring the Welsh skipper to Goodison Park:

“We wanted to bring in a strong player in the central defence position, a player who knows the Premier League and Ashley fits the bill for us very well. He is an experienced defender and the kind of player we need in the team. He is a leader. He showed this at Swansea and he has shown it for his country and he is looking forward to his new challenge here at Everton.”

The History

Williams began his youth career at West Brom, but was released by the Baggies at the age of 16. He then spent two seasons at non-league side Hednesford Town, before joining Stockport County in 2003.

He lasted five years with the Hatters, making 165 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and registering two assists, while he was also handed the captain’s armband at Edgeley Park.

In March 2008, then Swansea manager Roberto Martinez swooped to sign Williams for a then club-record transfer fee of a reported £400,000, and the centre-back immediately established himself as a key player at the Liberty Stadium, helping the club rise from League One to the Premier League by 2011.

Over the past five seasons, Williams, who took over the Swansea captaincy from Garry Monk, has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League, and helped lead the club to two top 10 finishes, as well as a Capital One Cup success in 2012/13.

Williams, born in Wolverhampton, qualified to play for Wales due to his Welsh grandfather, and made his international debut in a 2-0 win against Luxembourg in March 2008. He led his country to qualification for this summer’s European Championship in France, and the team exceeded all expectations to reach the semi-finals, only to lose 2-0 to Portugal. Williams has currently made 66 appearances for Wales, scoring two goals.

The Prospects

As alluded to by Koeman’s comments, the former Swansea defender has been brought in to provide some leadership to a defence that conceded 55 goals last season, with only five teams having a worse record.

Koeman trialled a three-man defence during pre-season, a system he utilised whilst at Southampton, and also opted for the same set-up at home to Spurs on Saturday afternoon.

At this point, though, it remains to be seen whether the Toffees’ boss will only use this against the stronger teams in the Premier League and revert to a four-man defence thereafter.

Following John Stones’ departure to Man City, Williams looks set to be the first-choice selection at centre-back at Goodison Park, with Phil Jagielka, who Koeman revealed will not be leaving this summer despite interest from Sunderland, likely to be battling it out with Ramiro Funes Mori to start alongside the Wales international.

The Toffees have also been heavily linked with Sunderland defender Lamine Kone though, and should they sign the Ivorian, the chances of using a three-man backline would certainly increase.

Analysing the underlying statistics of Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori in terms of their goal threat last season, the Argentine held a clear advantage, averaging a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, significantly superior to both Williams (214) and Jagielka (216.8).

Nonetheless, Williams’ all-action type of defending, with a desire to put his body on the line every times he steps foot onto the pitch, has seen him put up strong numbers for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) over the past few seasons.

Only Leicester’s Christian Fuchs (with 25) garnered more bonus points than Williams (24) in the last campaign, with the centre-back regularly benefitting when his side managed to keep a clean sheet.

In addition, Williams has missed just nine Premier League matches over the past five seasons, so his durability offers another string to his bow.

Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori are all priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and whilst the new boys’ CBI boosts his appeal, it’s worth noting that Funes Mori scored four goals last term from just 24 starts and is one to monitor if he nails down a regular role.

The new recruit was handed an extended break following his Euro 2016 exertions, and with 10 days’ training alongside his new team-mates, should now be ready to take on West Brom next weekend.

He edges into the picture just as Everton embark on a very favourable upcoming run (wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL, mci, bur), with only the trip to Man City in Gameweek 8 providing a stern test of he Toffees defence; clean sheets around that encounter look likely.

Ultimately, Koeman’s chosen formation will depend how we assess this new Everton rearguard.

Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman (when fit) will be the favoured options if stationed as wing-backs. Both are more expensive at 5.5 apiece in FPL, though with Coleman injured, Baines is set to emerge as a candidate to consider over the medium-term, particularly bearing in mind Koeman oversaw a Southampton side that kept an impressive 27 clean sheets over the past two seasons.

    Just airing my thoughts.

After yesterday, the urge to kneejerk a few players in is unbearable, I know the feeling. I went with Firmino, and everyone but him did something. Likewise those with Alexis will be feeling irked. Those that went with Tadic over Redmond will likely be feeling the same, just like those with Gray instead of Rondon/ Negredo. Those with Vardy are now trying to find the funds for Ibrahimovic.

Just relax. It's week 1. The tactic of knee-jerking is chasing lost points. GW1 isn't a time for chasing. Form isn't defined by 1 game and those that did well this week could be horrible next week. After the international break we'll start to get an idea of who is playing well, who is a key player, etc. You might be paying 0.5-1.0m more in a few weeks for a few players but at least you'll have the safety of knowing they're the ones to get (kind of).

No point using wildcards, taking hits and using FTs on sideways moves when nothing is clear at this point. All of the teams haven't even played yet.

        Just seems very sideways imo

MAhrez's stats suggest he could do damage to that Arsenal defence, just as much as Payet (who we have no idea about yet) could score against Bournemouth

Would the FT not be better off saved?

Not really tbh, Koscielny will be back. Leicester were poor and I think Arsenal will dominate. West Ham will be fired up for their first PL home game v Bournemouth who can't defend.

Yeah it seems sideways but someone like Payet (c) could do brilliant v B'mouth, depending on tonight of course.

I'd play devil's advocate and say

Vardy's stats are very optimistic for the game against Arsenal when you look at how the Gunners' defence is. Ibra plays a very good Southampton defence, and yes while they were bullied by Watford in the 1st half, Bertrand and possibly Fonte are returning. United at home is a positive though.

All depends on what you think. Everyone will react differently, saving that FT allows you to still do the move if Ibra rises by downgrading someone else. But whatever you think will work out I guess

Knee Jerk Knee Jerk Knee Jerk

I'm fairly sure the majority of people who do are chasing mythical points and generally end up further down the OR .
So I say knee jerk to your hearts content and let the patient managers climb up those ranks !

    14. SwissGuinness
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

I agree completely that kneejerking is the tactic of chasing lost points. But I'd like to play devil's advocate :

Redmond is cheaper than Tadic. If you have him and you don't have another urgent transfer to make, why not transferring him out for Redmond ? You gain :

      1) 1.5£ to use elsewhere (Sanchez, Ozil or Payet are expensive and could become nearly essential in the next weeks)
      2) A player who will surely rise in price
      3) A player who is now 99% sure of starting due to his recent good performances
      4) A player who is more attacking or at least as much a threat than Tadic for 1.5 less.

The same could be said of Firmino and Coutinho, although he's only 0.5 cheaper.

Gray -> Negredo is trickier as there is no difference of price, but it could also be a good move, if we expect Gray to fall in price and Negredo to rise. Middlesbrough's fixtures are also arguably better than Burnley's.

Fair point on Redmond given his price difference to Tadic

But I think with an away trip to United next, he's not a high priority transfer at the moment.

The week after however, if you save the FT you could still do the transfer and have another to invest the extra cash. Waiting a week to do it gives you more scope on other players so you have a better idea where to put that extra 1.5m

Yep, I agree that he's not a high priority transfer, but if you want to prefer Redmond than Tadic on the long term, it's better to make the transfer before the price rises...

I have Vardy, Firmino, Tadic and Gray. I am still happy, first three played well and the latter was above average imo. Post GW1 is way too early to be getting too worried.

Honestly the only reason I transferred out Vardy was to go with Kane as my captain choice week 2. Was my preseason plan regardless of how both did so hopefully doesn't bite me in the ... 🙂

Last year's GW1 standouts: Mahrez, Vardy, Ayew, Payet.

Think the only one I owned in GW1 was Payet, not sure about Ayew. Didn't get Mahrez and Vardy until about GW5/6 and I finished 754 in the end.

My point is you don't need to rush things. A good rank is easily made up throughout the entire course of the season without risking a further rank drop by picking players up too early that might not necessarily be a season wonder.

The relative price for a hit is low now. I'd say making 0.2m (if put to work for rest of season) + doing a transfer you'd want to do anyway is worth way more than 4 points. Eriksen-》cout tonight for me

Agree - here was my previous post on this subject...

Anyone who had a bad week needs to relax. Dont get too up if you do well or too low if you score poorly.

My advice is look at the game highlights. Did your 2 point guys get plenty of minutes? Did they look a threat? Did they assist the assister? Are they proven fantasy assets? Classic example if you had Firminho over Cout/Mane and Tadic/Long over Rednond you did no wrong it was just this side of the coin this week. Also clean sheets are hard to predict let alone on the first weekend.

Everyone will have a bad week at some point through bad luck not bad decisions. The first week might even be the best time to have it.

      I think the same.

In the end I decided to go with Vardy rather than Rooney because I though Vardy looked better in the Charity Shield. Vardy being off penalties is a disappointment and my first reaction was to switch him out. But I am going to stand pat and have 2 FTs for GW3 when I play my BB.

If Burnley will score it's gonna be Gray 90%. We all knew that.

But at home to Swansea they didn't look like scoring or being prepared for the PL.

So, keeping Gray for the Liverpool game suddenly looks like a waste of a 6.5 spot.

There was something fed back about the ticker and not being able to move selections around like before.

Saw the thing about ICT this morning and passed it on. Given that it's on FPL it looks like it won't be in the members area as well but I'll see if Mark or Jonty has anything else to add.

i'm a bit stuck with this, could improve with time but he looked lost up front and for 11m you want guaranteed points

Happy with my Walcott pick at the moment.. Sanchez has never looked great when played as the striker.. Think he'll be a good pick again once Giroud is back in the team

      He can't play upfront alone

He will be better when he's not at striker

He won't keep that up all season but he actually played quite well yesterday.

Would like to see what passes he made before being impressed, could all of been to a player 5 meters away for all we know 🙂

    Afternoon Gents,

I was hoping to get a few opinions on this please

    Foster Jaku
    Valencia Stones Friend Amat Pieters
    Hazard Mahrez Lamela Capoue Fegouli
    Kun Ibra Wilson

    I have 0.5 ITB
What are the best players to bench this week and should I make use of this weeks FT?

    Thanks

Yeah sounds like the best option.
What about transfers, do you think it's worth utilising the spare money in the bank?

I punted on Viktor Fischer - now not sure what to do.
This week it meant I got Amat off the bench, which was fine.

Should I use my FT? And if so what's the best 5.5 option?

7 goals in Ars-Liv and nothing for Sanchez and Firmino...

    Were they any good?

Sanchez was poor by his standards. To be fair he didn't really have the players around him.
Firmino was unlucky to not be in the points.
