Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 3

On a busy transfer deadline day, we bring the curtain down on Gameweek 3, pondering the prospects of City’s renaissance man, whilst surveying the options in the light of yesterday’s FA bombshell.

The Player

Alexis Sanchez deserves a mention but, for his continued ascent under Pep Guardiola, we have to doff our caps to Raheem Sterling.

Having simmered with a pair of assists in his opening two Gameweeks, Sterling’s contribution in Sunday’s win over West Ham United was emphatic.

An extra yard of pace, a renewed willingness to take on his defender – Sterling was already rekindling past performances from his bygone Liverpool days.

Now with two goals to his name, the City wide man will surely be flowing with confidence ahead of the biggest stage of all – a Manchester derby.

We should have reservations when discussing what is still a developing talent.

Sterling can go missing, he could quickly swing back to mediocrity but the underlying numbers and the role he’s playing in Guardiola’s system certainly provide room for optimism.

Now priced at 8.2 and rising, Sterling’s form is out of the bag and the masses have caught on.

Experienced heads may resist being turned by a unpredictable talent, but Sterling appears to be key component of Guardiola’s plans and in a fluid attacking system, is producing statistics to rival even the top bracket strikers.

The Team

After picking up one point in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal finally found their mojo with a 3-1 destruction of Watford on Saturday.

Alexis Sanchez’ 16-point return, courtesy of a goal and two assists, served a timely reminder of his talents as the Gunners prepare for an inviting run of fixtures that will surely invite investment.

Mesut Ozil also notched at Vicarage Road and looks the likeliest to rival Sanchez for our affections. His consistency on his way to a 19 assist return last season is still fresh in our memory – he’s the plodding Fantasy talent to Sanchez’ explosive but unpredictable returns.

In a season where new grappling laws have already boosted the number of spot-kicks, Santi Cazorla – as evidenced on Saturday – may also emerge as a viable option if, as expected, he cements his start.

Then we’ve got the impact of new signing Lucas Perez to consider – a potentially intriguing option as an 8.5 forward.

Suddenly the Arsenal attack is alive.

At the back, there’s also room for optimism, with fellow new boy Shkodran Mustafi expected to shore up an uncertain and unsettled rearguard.

We remain sceptical on their title credentials given the strength of the opposition gathering, but Wenger’s side are certainly back on the radar as a source of Fantasy talent.

That begins in Gameweek 4, where Sanchez and Ozil present viable captain options.

The Talking Point

Whilst deadline day is a major distraction, news of Sergio Aguero’s FA charge for an “alleged” act of violent conduct is still sinking in.

It seems likely that the charge will be upheld and that Aguero will accepted a three-match ban which will see him sit out the Manchester derby and the Gameweek 5 Etithad clash with Bournemouth.

His 51% ownership must now consider their options.

Benching Aguero over the next two Gameweeks is one route available, but having his funds in reserve is surely debilitating when there will be those re-investing his millions back into their squads.

In addition, Aguero’s price will likely drop, possibly by 0.3 or more by the time he returns for Gameweek 6. By benching him, we would be turning down an easy route to making perhaps 0.2 in funds; even that little could prove precious over the season.

The Wildcard looks the way to go. Without it we can swap out the Argentine but we can’t maximise the funds he liberates without a second free transfer or by taking a points hit.

With a Wildcard active, Aguero’s cash can be used to perhaps land Diego Costa or Romelu Lukaku, with change available to upgrade a mid-price midfielder to either Sanchez or Ozil.

That’s an intoxicating possibility that’s hard to resist which perhaps also offers up a new Gameweek 4 captaincy option.

The only danger is that we will get used to having Aguero’s funds distributed throughout our squads, paving the way for us to start questioning re-acquiring the Argentine for Gameweek 6.

Redmond ➡ Lanzini could be a good move in a few GWs.

Think Lanzini will improve even further this season.

Would like Payet but can't afford with the likes of Aguero,Hazard,Sanchez ,Mane,Lukaku etc.

Not really atm with Ayew injured.

I think Payet and Lanzini are nailed. Feghouli/Antonio to fight for places. Tore is gash anyways.

Yeah playing the Wednesday before the next round of games. Think European fixtures are earlier. Plus longer flights

Playing the same time as some Europeans, 6 September, just further away from club teams. It's a long travel and it doesn't help that they travel back clock wise. Time difference counted in, flights from, say Chile to England, can take as much as 20 hours. So, if they leave the morning of 7 September, they'll arrive in the 8 September night or early morning and probably not ready to training right away that day. Still could and imo should make the 11 or even 10 September match of course, but probably not in the best fit. Thats not irrelevant problem, though, if you're not in your best fit, that might not be good enough to play 90 minutes of top level football. The PL clubs have huge squads and the coach may reasonably get a better performance from someone else.

...also, since the timezones are -3 to -6 in SA, while SA teams in principle play the same time, in practice they start a few hours later than Europeans, so that for example when Peru-Ecuador, Chile-Bolivia and Brazil-Colombia start it's already 7 September in England.

Thinking of that, although it's just hours, it's not perhaps insignificant: I don't know when the players have arranged their home flights from America, but it would intuitively seem unlikely that it would be in the morning of 7 September in European time. So they could and probably will arrive back even later because of that.

after a less than average start this year, I am looking for a wildcard that will really bring me back into the mix. I want a team which is future proof, good to go all the way into the new year, and rack up the points along the way. here are some questions I would love your thoughts on, as I try to climb up my mini leagues.

          A) Man U Defence.....double up? Valencia and Shaw makes me happy, or just have one of them, and a bit of everton to split the risk?

          B) Lukaku......worth a shot? I guess I like him

          C) Sanchez or Ozil.....I dont trust myself to spend the money difference wisely enough. so maybe I just stack it in Sanchez and wait for points.

          D) formation, go big in midfield, and stick diomande on the bench? or choose a mid priced striker and have someone like Capoue on the bench

          E) other mids, Lamela? Antonio? Sterling? who do you like for 3rd and 4th mids alongside Hazard and Sanchez/Ozil

            Ozil

            A) Good option during good run of fixtures, which they don't really have the next few weeks. Could have Baines for Everton's run and then switch to the second Utd defender

            B) I'm going for him anyway

            C) Both good options. I might double up. Think Sanchez will get more points due to him scoring more goals

            D) Mid-priced would be the traditional option, but they're are lots of good midfield picks this year, so go for what you think looks nicest

            E) Lamela is good. Liverpool cover is also probably a good idea even if they're a bit harder on funds. Antonio, Chadli, Tadic are other decent options

            Which option?

            A) Aguero/Alli to Lukaku/Sterling for -4
            B) Aguero to Lukaku for free

            Lamela, Alli, Hazard, Redmond, Capoue
            Aguero, Ibra, Hernandez

Jury's clearly out on Traore - however Barcelona had first refusal, so clearly has something and probably shouldn't be judged on his 9 games for Villa last season. The Spanish connection will help him too.

As for Adomah, there aren't too many disapointed Boro fans. He causes a headached with his annual transfer request and at his best he is still short of being a Premier League footballer.

Does this strengthen or weaken Stuani's game time?

If we confirm Traore, then it weakens his position in the medium to long term, but he will always get minutes on the pitch.

Had we kept Adomah that would have left Stuani in a much stronger position though. Adomah had looked weak in the first couple of games and Stuani had overtaken him for the right hand side.

Traore is a completely different option to Stuani, who is slow but tactically astute. Sounds like Traore is raw and rapid...so it remains to be seen really. Rotation is highly likely I would think

Karanka doesn't mind a right footed left winger, for example Adomah has played there in the past and it appears that's where he sees Fischer playing long term, at the same time Downing has played on the right many times.

However, Stuani has never played on the left, only ever on the right. He's not a typical winger like the others in the sense that he will never beat men and swing a cross in - he's a converted centre forward with not much mobility. His USP is to be smart and drift into the box and get you tap ins, whilst putting the defensive graft in on the right.

So its unlikely we'll see them together in my opinion. If it's a game where we need Stuani's hard work on the right, then it's most likely a game we'll need Downing's hard work on the left. I don't see Traore jumping over Downing and Fischer on the left, and there's no way Stuani will be moved over...it's just never happened.
