The ScoutCast – Episode 216 – Confessional

I am a Fantasy Football manager, and I’m addicted to double Gameweeks. It’s a confession that the ScoutCast team are all too eager to admit in this latest ScoutCast episode.

Recorded prior to the confirmation of the first double Gameweek of the season, we were nonetheless correctly counting our chickens and allowing your multitude of community questions on Manchester City assets to steer the chatter.

Granville rejoined Jonty, Andy and myself to reinforce our investigation in Pep’s charges and to add his views to the heated Triple Captain debate surrounding Sergio Aguero. Yes, him again.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link or the first player below, or take in the full visual experience, pastry and all, via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

@TM. You said you have to factor in one less player in 27 by keeping Kane over Lukaku. True. By this means however, you also have to factor in the extra player I can get in 29. Which will be Sanchez is my case as I'll already have Kane. Not sure who in 28 can hurt me that I don't own or isn't owned by anyone so...ill say it again. Lukaku to Aguerro this week is the best choice!

It's not an extra player in 29, just a different one. Trollkaku is due 🙂

Speechless I just found out my rival was leading by 44pts doesn't have Aguero Sterling or Sane in. So the transfer he made must be KdB or a non DGW. At least a minus 4 from him once he finds out to bring in at least Aguero. No doubt he will do Kane or Costa out and Firminho out for Sterling and Aguero. So different would be 36 points. Who should I play out of Coleman or Philips?

    Team

    Foster
    Brunt Alonso Pieters
    Siggy Sane Philips Sterling
    Aguero C Ibra Costa

All the Phillips hate on here is getting embarrassing.

The guy was dirt cheap, scoring goals, getting assists, taking set pieces and playing in a solid goalscoring team priced at 5.5-5.7.

He was a great logical pick up if you got him in just after Xmas and he's played fairly well since then and unlucky not to have some attacking returns. I think people need to temper their expectations of what their 4th/5th mid should be scoring. And as for the injury, that's just something that happens to footballers, get over it.

All the moaning is basically results-oriented thinking which is the sign of a fish in poker and quite clearly the sign of a fantasy football fish too.

Unfortunately this game is about results and points...patience is thin around here. Some will keep him hoping that he'll play whilst others have points to chase hence brought in those in DGW

The game comes down to results and points but as players we have zero control over those things. The only thing we control is our decisions and the decision to bring in Phillips was perfectly sound.

You can get it in with pocket Aces and lose. You can eat green veggies all your life and still get cancer and you can bring in Matt Phillips for 5.5m and still get 6 consecutive blanks.

It's a bit surprising how many d/heads there are on here - presumably kids. What makes me laugh is all this 'casuals' talk followed by post after post asking for advice. At least the 'casuals' can make a transfer without someone holding their hand.

What is the point of this silly post? The game is results-oriented. You are well within your rights to be disappointed with a player not returning. If 5.5m is all you could afford, and you got him in, then fair enough. Others banked on his potential, replaced a slightly more expensive player than him and have been thoroughly let down by the lack of returns. He has not returned for long enough now and would have been transferred out of virtually every team, if it were not for the blanks. Everyone would have admitted their mistake and moved on, no complaints. But because of the sudden DGWs, the BGWs, free transfers are far and few between, he does occupy one of four midfield attacking spots, and is pretty much returning what a 4.2m mid would have returned. A 4.2m mid and 5.8m cannot be judged the same. There is still a 1.6m budget difference and so this situation deserves moaning when a player has gone cold, is clearly the weakest link in every team and is using up a fair amount of money that could be useful with this sudden DGW. The fact that you clearly want to act but have your hands kinda tied is what's frustrating.

      1. Jethrik

Have you watched him play? He's a real class act. People missed his points that's all. I've missed all Kak's big hauls - that's not his fault it's mine. People don't know him so when he blanks they moan where they wouldn't with Sanchez or Erikson. Phillips has come on this season but is injured and a bit burnt out. He will come back.

        1. fedolefan

So? What does being a class act and showing a dramatic improvement over previous years have anything to do with FPL? You need to understand that when people moan about a player, they are moaning about his lack of returns. Ultimately, this is a forum about FPL, where you pick a player you think will score you the most points in every position. I clearly mentioned, that an FPL manager has recognized his error in bringing in Phillips but is kinda in tricky situation when it comes to getting rid of him because of the DGWs and BGWs. He would have almost certainly been gone from my team were it not for the schedule. I don't think I'd have even bought him were it not for the schedule. Being unable to correct your mistake without an additional hit is the frustration. I don't see what's hard to understand there.

Like Ruth says, if you reread the original post you'll understand my point that getting him in was not really a mistake given the form fixtures and price. Your whole reaction is based on his lack of returns bit say his shot against Spurs is a foot left and goes in? What if just a couple of the numerous chances he's created in the last two months get converted (if anything it's Rondon who's the problem)?

Is it a mistake if he had 3 returns in the last 6?

And as for the idea of holding him just for gw28, well that's poor strategy imo. I bought him in because he had a run of 7 good fixtures culminating in BOU and CPA with the nice bonus of being a live body for gw28. If you held him purely for one away tie to Everton then it's hard to have sympathy.

Mate, this game is all about how you react to happenstance. You need to know when to cut your losses and move on, regardless of how well-intentioned a move was. What about Firmino for 7-8 GWs after his haul? He had his haul against Swansea, but how many blanks were in there before that? He had all the stats going for him, and it sure was happenstance that he kept blanking, but you all got rid before the haul, didn't you? I'm sure those who jumped on the Eriksen/Alli bandwagon were happy enough. There are plenty of class acts in the game and so it becomes imperative to get the right player in at the right time. Fair enough, picking Phillips was not a mistake for everyone, but hanging on to a player too long is a mistake. Yes, I'm now holding on to him because of GW 28. You called it poor strategy yourself and I agree. Just that given my upcoming hits on City players, I'm not too keen on another one for Phillips.

"Everyone would have admitted their mistake..."

It is clear from this that you don't know the difference between a bad decision (a mistake) and happenstance. Which is actually the point of the original post. 😕

You clearly don't understand the context of my post. It was a mistake in my case. I replaced Siggy with Phillips. The poster has expressed fairly strong views on the subject in addition to his logical move theory. Good for you that you chose to focus on the happenstance bit of things, but understand that everyone can interpret things differently.

No like I said below (post timing sorry), to me, If I make a decision to do something based on an expected outcome, and I don't get the outcome I was after, then I consider I have made a mistake. (FYI, not trying to argue, just saying I understood the other side to this debate)

Blimey. No. A mistake is a bad decision. You can make a mistake and get lucky. You can make a good decision and get unlucky.

Also,I replaced Siggy with Phillips too and I don't consider it a mistake. Siggy had awful fixtures and poor form, Phillips the complete opposite. If I triple captained PVA last week would that be a mistake?

Siggy to Phillips was not a mistake. It was quite logical. Siggy was over 7m, playing for a relegation side and blanking. Phillips was 5.5m, assisting in every game for a better side than Swansea with delightful fixtures coming up. The game is all luck. You can't actually predict someone will get points. You play to the odds and hope for the best. So it wasn't a mistake, just happenstance.

I call picking up a player that blanks 6 weeks in a row a mistake, even if my reasoning behind picking him up was sound. 🙂 I think the fact that it looked like such a logical choice (ie form good upcoming fixtures) is what has made some so salty after all the blanks. That being said, I did not complaint about Phillips on here even if I was frustrated by the lack of returns.

It's a mistake if and only if I wouldn't make the same move again with the same knowledge I had beforehand 🙂

FPL is a non-deterministic game... you won't be able to get all of the points all of the time... Phillips had a decent probability of being a success but we just came up against the odds. I'd make the same pick again; I don't think anything was overlooked.

You are allowed to judge your transfers, aren't you? Yes, with hindsight, an FPL transfer can be classified as a good move or a bad move. I think the discussion has veered off my original argument because someone likes being very very nitpicky (given he's fairly articulate), and is fairly sly at it.

My original argument was against the fact that we should not complain about Phillips because of his price. He is an underperforming player returns wise. After a few GWs of the Siggy to Phillips transfer, I realized the transfer was a bad transfer (a mistake, is what I called it). I then said, were it not for DGWs and Blanks, everyone (mainly meant me) would have admitted the erroneous transfer (mistake) and moved on to replacing him.

I agree with you that we can complain about Phillips. 5.5m blanking for more than 3 weeks in a row is underperforming. And I agree we would've replaced him if not for the BGW. I would've replaced him even with the BGW if he was holding up more value. But he's 5.5m and I have enough funds and other matters to worry about, so I ignored it.

But you keep using the word 'mistake'. If you get Aguero this week, and he gets injured in the weekend and misses out on both games, will you call it a mistake?

You have to judge a transfer as a good one or a bad one. It's the nature of the game. I never ever said picking someone in the first place was a mistake. Read my posts. The first time I used mistake, it was clearly with reference to not transferring him out after blanking for a few game weeks.

Ruth loves quoting people out of context, and then subtly taking the argument wherever he wants it to go. You can tell he does this on forums all the time. Not every one is as articulate as he is in expressing their thoughts and people miss out on explicitly listing out implied thoughts, yet time and again, he'll call them out for it when the underlying intent of a post is fairly obvious.

Of course you can judge your transfers and I'd encourage everyone to do so but look for faults in the decision making process not just that he didn't score point! If you can't find the faults then maybe it was the right call... We clearly share very different definitions of mistake/not mistake or good move/bad move. As I've said I don't think of players as destined to score a set number of points on a predetermined path, I think of them as a probability and if we were to repeat the experiment over and over and over again more often than not Phillips would've been a success than a failure in my opinion! Hence I'd make the same call again.

Regardless I actually gave your original post an upvote, although I disagree with some of it, I can't deny I would've removed Phillips 3 weeks ago if it wasn't for these blanks; I don't think he looked as good as some have claimed.

When to transfer a player out is decision making. Again, all this focus on the word mistake.

                    Read my original post:
"He has not returned for long enough now and would have been transferred out of virtually every team, if it were not for the blanks. Everyone would have admitted their mistake and moved on, no complaints."

It was only used in reference to Phillips still being in our teams because of the schedule despite blanking. Look what got quoted, the discussion expanded to something completely not the intent of my post, and the next thing you know, as always, we are all discussing happenstance.

Anyway, I have said enough on this. I've put across whatever I've wanted to say.

It is not the Aguero of previous seasons - his PPG is much lower, he has lost pens and is a rotation risk.

But he plays for perhaps the best attacking team in the division, and GW37 is the one for BB. No other team will have such a welcoming DGW, and we do not know the state of Costa, Ibra or Sanchez when their time comes round.

I'd say it's 50/50. By some twisted logic I'm considering it because I'm only going with Aguero - I figure that if City run riot with Sane and Sterling in the points, a T/C on Aguero is likely to offset the damage.

Sanchez could have a double as early as 32/33. At TC he stands to gain an extra 3 points per goal and can also earn 3pts for clean sheet

Yeah, I'm expecting the worst and hoping for the best - it could easily backfire - but if it goes as well as it has the potential to, then it will be pretty nice. We probably won't know how much of a bad decision it was until the other TC options play their DGWs anyway.

I read your post - very good points, but do you really think Kun ownership will be low? Everyone and his wife is buying him at the mo. It will be a frenzy on Friday night/Saturday. Pickford is back and Sunderland will sit deep. they wont get a point but they might keep out City for quite a while. Do you really think Pep will play Kun for 60+ plus minutes with Stoike three days later?

Aguero could finish with 2-3 goals from the DGW easily. Is that worth 12.7 and the attendant wrangling?

Yeah game time is a worry. As for ownership, I did say 'lower' not 'low' 😉 Let's just assume that Ibra has a DGW in 34, I'm pretty sure that a lot more people will own Ibra that week than that will own Aguero this week.

City beat Sunderland 2-1 earlier in the season. But one of their goals was an OG. It's not going to be a draw, but it may not be the 5-0 people are expecting. A lot of City wins have been quite low scoring and crucially goals are often coming late. I don't see Aguero getting a lot of game time against them - Pep will save him for Stoke.

Got lost in the chaos yest, should probably have saved it for the DZ anyway :p

If you're getting Kun, how many points do you need just to break even?

Assuming most are paying -8 to bring him in and out for someone like Lukaku, and would have captained Ibra/Kane or Sterling if they didn't have Aguero.

    So Kun*4 has to outscore
    Lukaku + 8 + Ibra/Kane/Sterling*2.

How many points do you think that is?

    1. Lav
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

      I took a -4 for him.
Probably needs a solid 50-60 points

So you're basically saying 2 goals in the DGW?
(8 for goals, and around 6 for playing time + bonus = 56 points)

I think there is something wrong with these calculations.
You have considered total 14 pts for the DGW (sun+STK).
So double of that for captaincy should be 28. Right ??
Instead of Kun*4 it should be Kun*2.

If I "ASSUME" the following case:
              Ibra (1G+1A+3BP) = 12 pts
              Lukaku (1G) = 6 Pts
              Then:
              Lukaku+8+2*Ibra = 38 pts.
To match this Aguero will need 19 pts in 2 matches that is roughly 3 goals (12 pts for goals + 4 for minutes +3 BP).

if people are taking -8 they are probably bringing in Kun/Sterling/Sane. That's essentially 4 extra games from players (taking into account captaining a DGW player)

Ruth_NZ: A few weeks ago we debated the relative merits of Coleman vs Baines. You were adamant that Colemans attacking threat made him the better buy whereas I was favouring Baines because of his role on penalties and free kicks. Hats off to you. You were spot on.

I also went for Baines but a pen wont change a thing. It is clear from watching matches that Coleman is much more dangerous going forward. He is playing like a right winger, safe in the knowledge that Sneid, Gueye or even Davies will cover. Baines doesnt have the athleticism for that level of attacking anymore.

I'm planning to bring Coleman in next week for the double up ahead of WB and Hull at home, and then move out Baines before the tough away double.

Coleman is unlucky not to have more points - hit the post a few times.

Question to those selling Lukaku this week so that they can hold onto Kane post GW28... isn't an in-form Aguero with guaranteed starts far more frightening proposition than Kane?

And say he scores a couple of goals this GW, do you still sell him?

not sure yet, I posted below that I am chasing and my ML rival hasn't brought in any City. To me, my ML is more important that OR, so I think having Kun/Sterling this week where my rival doesn't can be enough to help me make up ground. I will probably use it on Sanchez eventually given he wants to play every minute of every game. I may flip last minute and throw on the TC this week, but not leaning that way at the moment.

I believe week 34 Sanchez has a DGW with City and Palace home which actually may be good... that is... if Wenger doesn't bring Giroud back in to the Striker position. Too much uncertainty... whereas right now we have a healthy nailed on Kun with two bad defenses on the dockit.

    Hello all,

Trailing my ML rival by 58 pts. While he did two transfers earlier in the week, I am certain he has not brought in any of Aguero, Sterling, or Sane given his team value has not changed today (he did not have any of the players that dropped today either).

I have Aguero and Sterling, and will captain Aguero. My question is, should I simply captain Aguero for the DGW given my ML rival doesn't have him at all or go all in and use the triple captain? I am leaning towards playing it safe and not playing the TC. I figure if Kun/Sterling get some returns they are points he won't get anyway, where if they flop, at least I still have my TC for later.

    Thoughts?

I'm still recovering from the last time I captained him, was the only one in my ML who had him. Unfortunately I got 1pt doubled to 2pts and didn't own Lukaku for his 4 goal haul and lost my ML lead. If I use TC and it goes bad, I will pretty much have no hope of catching up in my ML!

Thanks guys, I probably am going to play safe and not use TC. Forgot to mention he has already used his WC, while I still have mine saved up to help with the DGW/Bench Boost later in the year. I think owning Kun/Sterling as differentials this week plus having the WC up my sleeve will help me catch him.

TM this is great news for us in and around top 1k with chips left.

That's a higher number of WCs used than I thought and that's a lot of BB used.

      Encouraging stuff

Thoughts on the team for GW27 transfers made no hit taken. Phillips only concern, if he doesn't play I only have 10 players.

    Valdes (Pickford)
    Alonso, Coleman, Brunt, Evans (Amat)
    Hazard, Sterling, Mane,*Phillips* (*Stanislas*)
    Aguero (c), Ibrahimovic (*Anichebe*)

        Aguero to Lukaku
        Sterling to Sigurdsson

Cool. Hopefully Stan will come back and get us some minutes too. I was gonna drop him for Fraser but I won't now. Amat to Mawson could be worth the hit this week. I personally don't think Phillips will play. If he doesn't, Mawson will get 2 pts over the next two to repay the hit. Decent chance of a goal and clean sheet, could pay off huge

You won't drop Stanislas because you believe he will start, or because you have other priorities?

I am considering Stan to Coutinho for -4, wondering whether I should just hold on till 28. Daniels would start instead.

I really need to deal with Stan, Amat, Anichebe mainly, get them out and bring in some good replacments. But if i was you I would hold till GW28 and make the transfer for free.

Well it won't be for free. Will need a hit anyway.

Only risk is that if Stanislas does start, then I would sell Sterling to Coutinho next week instead.

His price and his position on the field do not make him as attractive as Sterling as Sané, simple as that really

He used to be more varied and got caned. Then he studied up and discovered that 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 and 2-0 are statistically the most common results (around 70% of games finish with one of those scorelines). So now he mainly sticks with them.

Most likely Allen would get only 2 additional points for his game against City, so not sure if he is worth the hit.

Nah, it's mainly a bunch of know-nothings telling people stuff they should already know. Plus Mark doing a bit of statistical analysis sometimes. And waving his hands like they showed him on his presentation skills course. 😉

It's basically only useful in terms of knowing what the spoon is feeding to the masses.

Fortunately no attempt is made to disseminate any understanding of game strategy. Consequently all it is likely to cause is pronounced price volatility as the herd stampedes into and out of the fashionable players, plus the taking of an unnecessary amount of hits. I don't have the stats but I'm betting that the amount of hits taken by active managers this season will comfortably beat previous seasons.

IMO the choice of whether to (C) or (TC) Aguero depends mostly on your current predicament, rather than doubts over his game time. If this is not made known to others, then the choice should be yours to make and not influenced by other opinions
