Captain Poll – Gameweek 28

Due to the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place this weekend, our Gameweek 28 captain poll selection is limited to players from just eight teams.

Among this reduced group, assets from Liverpool and Everton, who both have favourable home ties, are expected to dominate.

It would be no surprise to see Romelu Lukaku (10.0) at the summit after the Belgian struck his 18th goal of the season against Spurs to become Everton’s most prolific Premier League scorer.

The Golden Boot contender, who is just one shy of current leader Harry Kane, collides with a West Brom defence that boasts a single clean sheet on the road and has shipped eight over their last four away outings.

With a goal and two assists in his last quartet of matches, Ross Barkley (7.1) offers a cheaper armband option amongst Ronald Koeman’s ranks. So, too, does Seamus Coleman (6.0), for those willing to take a risk on captaining a defender.

The right back’s blank against Spurs was the first time since Gameweek 19 that he has failed to deliver either defensive or attacking returns. This consistency is likely to mean he overshadows Leighton Baines (5.7), despite the latter’s spot-kick duties.

Burnley’s visit to Anfield will likely ensure that Liverpool’s midfield provides Lukaku’s main competition.

Sadio Mane’s (9.4) goal and assist at home to Arsenal on Saturday evening adds to an impressive record in front of his own fans – only Chelsea’s Eden Hazard can match the Senegal international’s eight home goals among FPL midfielders.

Seven strikes on home turf makes Roberto Firmino (8.4), who also scored and assisted against the Gunners, another strong option. Meanwhile, Philippe Coutinho’s (8.2) four close range efforts on Saturday, more than any other Reds player, makes him another to consider. The Brazilian has recorded six attempts on goal in both his previous two Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Swansea City’s continued renaissance under Paul Clement keeps their players in the frame for the captaincy when they drop in on Hull City this weekend.

With five goals in the Clement era, Fernando Llorente (6.4) is set to attract votes, along with set-piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.6). The Icelander has three strikes and five assists since the new manager took the helm, returning points in seven of his last eight Gameweek starts.

Llorente, who scored a fourth brace of the season against Burnley at the weekend, is currently the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 28, with more than 56,000 new owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Hull, under their new manager Marco Silva, are also undergoing something of a recovery, having beaten Liverpool and drawn against Manchester United since the Portuguese took charge ahead of Gameweek 21. However, with nine goals conceded over that time, the fragility of the Tigers defence is still evident.

West Ham’s visit to Bournemouth looks ripe for goals and, as a result, offers a raft of alternative captaincy candidates.

Over their last six matches, the Cherries have conceded 15 goals and failed to register a clean sheet, while the Hammers have been similarly poor, claiming a solitary clean sheet and shipping nine goals.

For Eddie Howe’s men, Josh King (5.4) looks to be the most secure route to points. The first choice penalty taker in the absence of long-term injury victim Callum Wilson, the Norwegian has scored an impressive five times in his last six Gameweeks – with a mere 3% ownership, he looks an intriguing differential candidate for this reduced Gameweek.

Among the most likely Hammers’ captaincy candidates are Andy Carroll (6.2), should he have recovered from a groin injury ahead of tonight’s clash with Chelsea at the London Stadium.

Michail Antonio (6.9), who is suspended for tonight’s Blues encounter and sits in 8.3% of FPL teams, is another valid option: he has scored eight goals and assisted another seven this term.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

It's a good thing this Sanchez drama has occurred now and not later on during the end of season DGWs. Can see what happens in the next few weeks. He's away to WBA and then faces City so 2 games should be more than enough to assess his status ahead of the DGWs.

For those who have still got their TC chip, him, Kane and Ibra will be the main three to choose between.

    Double figure scores this season:
    Alexis- 8
    Kane- 6
    Ibra- 5

        Yep.

2 people ahead of me in my money league have played it with Aguero this week. Going to dread the Stoke game. I can't imagine many who've captained him and not TC'd actually wanting him to score, which seems strange.

Same here, only captain for me and I've had enough from Aguero for this week 😀

My biggest rival in my ML has Kun (TC) and has this GW already established a 50pt lead on me (Aguero, Mane, Alli, Sane, Crouch) on my fodder feeders 😆

Seeing a lot getting 10/11 out this week. Is anyone else making do with fewer? I'll have 8, using my FT. Figure I don't want to take a hit for a player I won't want in my squad next week (already have three Everton).

Turning to the main question: Mane,. Coutinho or Firmino for the next three weeks (i.e. before bringing Alexis back)? Money not an issue. I'm aware Mane is the most popular, but I like the differential factor of Firmino and PC's underlying stats are very appealing!

I currently have 8, going to do Ibra/Aguero to Kaku as the second part of the kaku cokey. Also got Kolarov in as a one week punt rather than Coleman, who will be coming in as well.

Next one is tough, all 3 have their merit. Owning Coutinho recently has actually been frustrating, getting into fantastic positions but not having any real cutting edge. Mane for me has that edge and will be most consistent. Firmino links up well with Mane for me and reaps the rewards of Mane's talent.

I have both Mane and Coutinho and could make a case for all 3.

That's my point. I could do Kane/Aguero to Llorente, but why? Kane I'll want in GW29, Aguero to Costa is pencilled in for GW29 too. Seems a bit of a waste

      8 is enough

The ones who have 10-11 will have to take some hits to get a team back together

Better to have 8 and a good team, than 11 from those gw28 teams

      1. Pocky
        • 14 Years

        I disagree DanielH1
        I have
        HEATON/Pickford
FUNES MORI FRANCIS BRUNT Walker Alonso
        SNODS MANE SIGGS T.CARROLL Alli
        LUKAKU LLORIENTE Aguero

        4.9ITB

which gives me 10, who will I be looking to shift right away? Well I think Aguero will go first to Kane for 29, other than that, Snoddy to Pedro maybe, probably can afford Sanchez there once Aguero's gone. Happy to keep T.Carroll as an enabler (that's what I got him in for in the first place). Walker & Alonso are in every week normally, so I just pick 1 of the other 3 there, Llorente to Gabbi in 30 probably. Certainly no immediate issues anyway.

Dropping Walker when he was suspended for GW19.

I brought in Van Dijk, who got a red card that week.

To compound the mistake, I brought in Rose to be different on my wildcard, who got hurt before the 60th minute mark against Sunderland.

That decision may end up costing me my main ML because everyone has had Walker since the beginning of the season.

        2) Evans over McAuley in GW2 or 3
        3) Shaw over Walker GW1

Baines instead of Coleman. Evans/Brunt instead of McAuley.
Getting rid of Heaton for Foster and Alonso before his 21 pointer. Had Siggy in for 11 GWs, but lost patience after their 4-0 loss against Arsenal (he has attacking returns in pretty much every game since then)

Several over the season, but the most recent 50-50 swings were on my second wildcard few weeks ago.

Got Baines, Brunt, Rose, Jones on my wildcard by selling or leaving Coleman, McAuley, Walker, Valencia.

        Ones I got wrong

        Evans over McAuley
Giroud over any fit player striker
        Carroll instead of Llorente/Gabbiadini
        Lallana over Firmino
        Stanislas over King
        Phillips over Chadli/Morrison
        Ibrahimovic over Kane
        Alli over Eriksen
        Alonso over Walker.....just.

        .....it goes on. 🙂

        Ones I got right

        Lukaku over Costa
        Coleman over Baines

Started with Vardy and Tadic over Ibra and Redmond
Fuchs over Alonso in GW 10
Evans over Mcauley GW4 WC cause of .1 difference
Brought in Costa a few weeks ago over Kane
Didnt get Lukaku's 4 goals despite deliberating over the decision all week.
Holding Koscielny instead of getting Coleman a few weeks ago
Not going through with Kos to Kolarov for -4 this week

Karius over Heaton (GW6-GW11 and then I bought Heaton), Deeney over Austin (GW6), Walcott over Alli (GW14), Gibson over Chambers (GW17-GW23), Özil over Eriksen (GW21), Daniels over McAuley (GW21). Most of them happened because I didn't want to double/triple up but I don't regret any of them. I am where I am because of these decisions.

I've made so many decisions that went wrong this season, and many of them were just poor decisions rather than 50/50 calls. Here are some of them:

Starting with Fletcher instead of Capoue in my initial squad and leaving out Ibrahimovic.

Selling Payet for a hit instead of benching him for a week in GW3.

Selling the suspended Aguero and spending the money on bringing in Hazard for a hit to captain him in GW4. Not only did Hazard fail miserably, I then had to take another hit to bring Aguero back in GW6.

Selling Costa and bringing in Sanchez for a hit to captain him in GW7.

Replacing Austin with Defoe as part of a mega-hit in GW10.

Replacing Ake with Daniels as part of another hit in GW16, then reversing the transfer in GW19. Both mistimed.

Replacing Hazard and Lallana with Alli and Stanislas for a hit in GW23. Hazard then regained form and Stanislas was dropped.

Selling Alli instead of Eriksen in GW27.

I can think of two moments.

1 Selling Mané for Hazard after the latters haul against Everton. I had the exact cash for it and the price change meant I acted fast. Mané promptly went on to outscore Hazard by about 30 Points untill he left for AFCON.

2 Getting in Aguero (C) for Burnley. This is the key: I was sitting nicely at about 50k ranking, and high on my own team value I chose to make three moves:

        Andy Carroll > Sergio Aguero
        Eden Hazard > Jonathan Leko
Cedric Soares > Nathan Aké (-4)

And would you believe it - Carroll and Hazard both outscored Aguero, and Cedric outscored Aké who of course was recalled just a week later. Disastrous move and it left me cleaning up with hits due to having a nonplaying 5th mid, Aké being recalled and Kun losing his place.

        I moved from GW19 rank: 52k
        to GW 26 rank of 274 k.

        Lukaku + Alli + Hazard -> Aguero + Sane + Sterling

        instead of

        Grabban + Alli + Hazard -> Aguero + Sane + King

        All because I wanted Sterling.

Such a bad decision, I was all set for GW28 and ruined it.

King scores a pen and Ibra misses his, then Lukaku scores - couldn't have gone much worse.

Just laying down a reverse jinx 😉 I think it was a bad decision regardless of the outcome tbh. The other plan would have required no hits this week. Sterling is gonna need to score big, and plenty of people have him anyway.

I would still call it a possibly unlucky decision rather than a bad one.
Many FPL managers expected Sterling to outscore King and to be worth a hit - Mark even took a hit to bring in Sane as well as a third City attacker.
Some even thought it was worth selling Lukaku for Ibra in GW27 and then bringing him back for GW28.

I took a hit to replace Alli and Defoe with Sterling and Aguero (fortunately I had enough in the bank to afford this).
I preferred this to the alternative of just replacing Lukaku with Aguero.
The only thing I regret about it is that I didn't sell Eriksen instead of Alli.

Ditching Sanchez for Ozil GW12 as Ozil looked to be improving, I thought I would rarely captain Alexis and also it freed up funds. I have then been stubborn ever since and not got him back.

The lessons I've learned from this are:

        - Firstly don't be stubborn in FPL and think that a player scoring well will stop scoring well eventually. Sanchez, Heaton I've done it with both
        - Secondly it's about maximising total points, not worrying about just a players value especially if they are expensive but you won't captain often. That doesn't matter if they will still score well for you.

I've owned Ibra a long time and I don't captain him often. I will do the same with Sergio.

I usually captain players like Kane and Lukaku and the odd Mane.

        Foster over Heaton.
Siggy in for Coutinho injury (pre-Xmas)
And a run of about 5 weeks Nov/Dec captaining Carroll & Kane against bottom 3 sides that didn't pay off at all. Part of a slump that saw me drop 700k over 6/7 GWs.

Kane out for Ibrahimovic after his double blank over Christmas. Harry goes on to 4 double figures and only 3 blanks in the next 10, while Zlatan trickles in an odd goal or assist every two weeks. Still, it puts me off Kane as I don't know if I trust him - or Spurs in general.

I could list so many in the first half of the season. Almost every big 50/50 went wrong, going with my head and not my gut.

Not selling Ibra for Lukaku in GW24 was the culmination of this. It was the only way I could get him in. I would be about 800th now. I have promised to myself to use gut instinct from now on.

Demi said 50/50 calls that have defined our season, and everyone, except Jonty, has listed ones they got wrong. So as well as the numerous ones I have got wrong, I would also say:

          1. Bellerin to Alonso (over Brunt) in GW12
          2. Keeping Kane and not selling to Costa in GW19 (after he returned from his 1 week ban)

I got Baines over Coleman in GW22, but quickly realising my mistake, I got Coleman in as well in GW23. The double-up has worked well for many on here.

Starting the season with Harry Kane then not having him when it mattered.
In total I've had Kane in my team for over 40% of his season minutes, getting 4 of his 19 goals, 6 of his 23 bonus and 43 of his 152 points.
Fair warning I'll be getting him back in for GW29.

Baines over Coleman - just after Baines 15 pointer, had shipped Coleman earlier when his outpout didn't justify price.
Selling Kane + Alli after Hull + Burnley(h) blanks. Then selling again for GW27 and holding Ibra
Waiting for 1st half of season for Costa to get his 5th yellow over and done with
        Friend over McAuley
        Foster over Heaton

So in short, defensive mistakes have been the downfall this season. Previous seasons the mistakes have been balanced by lucky decisions - not so this season.

        1. Getting Evans instead of McAuley on the first wildcard (saved £0.1).
        2. Not replacing Firmino with Eriksen/Alli after the Coutinho injury (still have Bobby but now he might finally come good).
        3. Having Benteke instead of Defoe.

Also didn’t have Sánchez, Kane and Lukaku for their large hauls, while rivals captained them, but those were perhaps not 50/50 decisions.

Foster over Heaton. Cost me a lot of points by itself, but also stopped me from getting Brunt once he was in the team, who I'd earmarked since the start of the season, due to not wanting to double up on a defence that doesn't keep many clean sheets.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says reports of a training ground row between Alexis Sanchez and his team-mates are "completely false".

Sanchez is believed to have had an angry exchange with fellow players after leaving training mid-session prior to Saturday's loss at Liverpool.

He was confronted by team-mates on their return to the changing room as tempers flared.

"I'm not aware, nothing at all," said Wenger.

      Purely for GW 28 points:

      A) Firmino
      B) Coutinho
      C) Llorente
      D) Antonio
      E) Lanzini

      Which one?

        Currently looking like this...

        Heaton
        Brunt Baines (Walker, Holebas, Amat)
        Siggy Mane Phillips Carroll (Sterling)
        Lukaku (Ibra, Aguero)

        Leaning towards a -8 of:

        Holebas > Coleman
        Sterling > Coutinho/Firmino (Probably Cout)
Ibra/Aguero > Carroll (Already 3 swans so can't do Llorente and wouldn't be keen on a Swans offensive triple up either)

Coleman and Coutinho look good for a while and Carroll could too or could become Gabbiadini in GW30 easily. Would then allow me to go Ibra/Aguero (the one I don't transfer this week) > Kane and Phillips > Eriksen/Alli (-4) GW29 and also have the cash to do Mane > Sanchez GW30 if I want.

Thoughts on the hit? Personally think its definitely worth it and would give me 11 for the week assuming Phillips plays and Amat stays benched.

Got Coleman & Jakupovic, for cheapish defender to cover the blank and beyond do you reckon

        A. FM - 4 out of Evertons next 6 are decent and he surely has a goal or 2 in him.

        B. Maguire/Robertson - 3 out of Hulls next 4 are at home.

        C. Ollson/Mawson - fixtures are decent and both are goal threat.

Lukaku for me. West Brom's poor form has come at a perfect time. His home form is strong.

Mané would be my second pick, but their record against the lower teams really is woeful. That said, they may be out for blood after the humilition they suffered at Turf Moor earlier in the season, and Burnley are terrible away from home.

Could be the exact opposite of the immovable object vs the irresistable force and lead to an absolute goal fest or a 1-1... too much uncertainty for me!

Lukaku the safe choice, Liverpool mid more fun. Liverpool's record against the lesser teams is not great but that is mainly away from home and if you look at points tally. In FPL terms that doesn't matter. They score on average 2 or more goals at home regardless of opposition even if they don't win. A highscoring draw or loss is just as good for the attacking players as a win.

It's a close call between Mane and Lukaku.

Liverpool's home form against the weaker teams is nowhere near as bad as people think - it's just surprising that their results against other top six teams have been even better, and that some of their away performances have been poor.

Excluding matches against other teams in the top six, Liverpool have won 6, drawn 1 and lost 1 in their other 8 home matches.
Mane didn't play in the loss to Swansea and in the other 7 he scored 12, 7, 12, 13, 6, 8 and 2 (60 points from 7 matches - 8.6ppg), only blanking against Stoke.

Excluding matches against top six teams, Lukaku has scored 2, 12, 8, 12, 2, 11, 21 and 6 in his other 8 home matches (74 points from 8 matches - 9.25ppg), only blanking against Stoke and Swansea.

So Mane and Lukaku are both excellent captain choices, with Lukaku being more explosive but less consistent.
And interesting that the only lesser teams that either of them blanked against Stoke and Swansea!

11 players for this week. No doubt there will be a late out or two.

Looking at Kun to Kane and Phillips to Sanchez / Eriksen next week with the money in the bank.

Baines / McAuley / Funes Mori / Maguire
        Firmino / Sigurdsson / T. Carroll / Phillips
        Lukaku / Llorente

How important would you lot rate a good start to the season? Obviously the first couple of weeks ranks can fluctuate massively. BUT my point is the first 10 weeks. If you're in the top 10/20k, surely that's a great platform to pretty much be a dullard for the rest of the season? Whereas a bad first 10 weeks and you need to make the points up? Silly phsycology as it's a week by week game.

Invariably, the seasons I have done well have been those in which I have had a good start. So I would say it's important, but not critical.

there will be a statistician along shortly to prove me wrong, but on man maths here's my thinking:

The more hits you take to get in teh potential big hitters for this GW (at only -2 really each) the more chance you have of having that one player that gets the haul this week i.e. for me I don't have, Firm/Cout/Mane or Lukaku, any one of them could easily cover the effective 6 points worth of hits I need to take to get in all 3. So

Sterling, Sane, Aguero > Firm, Mane & Lukaku for 12 pts, but at worse they'll all get 2pts and I'll be 6pts down.

Only 8 points if you haven't made an FT already 🙂

But even if -12, I'd probably have a punt on that - all three are easily capable of scoring 12 on their own, and are probably better than the Man City players from GW29 to 31 anyway looking at the fixtures.

Yeah buying all of them is called diversifying the risk, but the real question is will you be needing all of them beyond GW 28 or not

They are all quality players that I would happily have anyway.

Sane is a shame to drop because he's great differential and on form.

Sterling/Aguero vs Lukaku/Mane is a lottery as to which will score more points over the next few weeks.

As long as you dont need another 12 points to swap them all back out & always intended to ditch City en masse for the next 4 gw.

Had 7 + Stanislas. Done Ibra & Stanislas to Carroll and Llorente for a hit. so 9 but probably doing Sterling-> Coutinho for a total of -8. Would leave me enough in bank to get Kane in for GW29 for Niasse.

If Gabbiadini continues to rise despite blanks, imagine how much he will rise when he actually has a game!

More concerned about Kane's price rise tbh. Gabbi under priced based on his start so far.

        Best choice here?

        Randolph / Jaku
Brunt RFM Amat(lol) / Alonso Pieters
        Antonio Siggy Mane Fletcher Sterling*
        Kun Llorente Kaku (c)

        1) Save
        2) Sterling to Coutinho -4
        3) Sterling to Firmino -4
        4) Pieters to Coleman -4
        5) Amat to Mawson -4

        Thinking 2 here!

        Thanks!

Option 3 seems tempting but again I'd also wanna get either of Firmino or Coutinho. 2 seems like a good choice

2 and 4. Think getting Coleman for -2 is worth it and a long term asset.

Hazard & Sterling > Mane & Siggy (for a hit)

Plan to get Pedro, if I go back in for Chelsea.....
