Scout Report – Steve Mounie

Having already splashed out on big money deals to bring in Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince, Huddersfield Town broke their club-record transfer for a third time to sign striker Steve Mounie from French club Montpellier.

The 22-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £11.44 million plus add-ons, and has penned a four-year deal with the Terriers.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner believes that the Benin international has the tools to flourish in the English top-flight:

“He has real physical attributes that should be perfect for the Premier League, plus we have already seen his talents as a football in his remarkable season in France… At just 22 years old, he is only going to improve too. Given what he is already capable of, that is very exciting.”

The History

Born in Parakou, Benin, Mounie moved to France as a youngster and started his professional career at Montpellier’s academy.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in a cup tie against AC Ajaccio in October 2014, but had to wait until the start of the 2015/16 season to make his league bow.

In August 2015, Montpellier sent Mounie on a season-long loan to Ligue 2 outfit Nimes in order to gain valuable first-team experience.

Mounie took his chance to impress, registering 11 goals and five assists in 32 league appearances, returning to Montpellier last summer ready to establish himself in their first-team squad.

He produced an ever better goal return last term, netting 14 times and managing three assists from 35 league outings in a side that could only finish 15th in Ligue 1.

Mounie has made six appearances for Benin, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

While Wagner added Belgian international Laurent Depoitre last month, the need to bolster his attacking options was clear after his side managed just 56 goals in their 46 league matches last season.

Mounie’s strengths appear very similar to Depoitre. Both players are fearsome in the air, although the former boasts superior athleticism, which could be key given that the “Terriers’ identity” places great emphasis on pressing from the front.

The Benin international, who stands at 6ft 3in tall, averaged a staggering 8.4 successful aerial duels per match last term, while six of his 14 league goals came from headers.

His other eight goals were scored from inside the penalty area on his favoured right foot, with several smart finishes highlighting his composure and showcasing a sound technical ability.

Mounie also possesses good movement and pace for a player of his size and is able to drift out wide and play as a winger if required. However, his link-up play has been criticised, particularly in terms of his first touch.

Impressively, the 22-year-old averaged a shot every 26.95 minutes in Ligue 1 last season, which bettered Arsenal’s club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette for Lyon (28.67).

However, his conversion rate is far from comparable. While Lacazette boasts a laudable 33%, Mounie recorded just 13.3% in the same division.

In fairness, that is typical for a target man who registered 41% of his efforts as headers; only 9.5% of Lacazette’s shots were aerial attempts.

When we look for comparisons in the Premier League, Christian Benteke fired 105 shots for Crystal Palace in 2016/17 – the same number as Mounie for Montpellier – converting 14.3% into goals. More than 49% of Benteke’s efforts were headers.

There are clear parallels to be drawn and, like Benteke, Huddersfield’s new striker will flourish only if fed with a regular supply and a variety of crosses. It remains to be seen if Wagner’s side are equipped to deliver; recent signings Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince are likely to be key figures in that respect.

Given the outlay, Mounie would seem the favourite to start in the lone striker role for the Terriers in Wagner’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. That could see him priced between 6.0 and 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League – slightly more expensive than fellow signing Depoitre.

He’s already been added as an 8.5 option in Sky Sports – an identical price to his new Belgian team-mate. That could certainly earn him attention as a third forward option should he settle quickly.

Considering Huddersfield’s favourable opening fixtures (cpl, NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn), that’s clearly a possibility.

We won’t be short of attacking options from Wagner’s side though, with Ince, Mooy and the 12-goal Elias Kachunga also set to vie for our attention. The classification and price of the latter may well be decisive.

For now, Huddersfield’s aggressive recruitment drive demonstrates that the Yorkshire club are determined to seize their chance in the top flight. That’s reassuring for us Fantasy managers, who will look to unearth some value from Wagner’s ranks.

We will be paying keen attention to the pre-season form and formation, with a Huddersfield attacker very much in our thoughts as an early makeweight.

Time will tell whether Mounie will emerge as the go-to option, but his credentials at least suggest that he has the potential to grow as a factor in Premier League.

    Thoughts on Salah at 9.0m?

Predictable reaction is overpriced. I think folk have very short memories, though - just looked back and Nolito came in a 9.0 last season.

I said the Nolito thing the second Salah signed and everyone said 8.5. You can literally go through my comment history and find it.

That being said, when a forum virtually agrees on a price, that means that almost everyone considers it acceptable. Of course Big Brother ain't gonna let that happen.

When you compare it to world class, PL established players like Couts starting price last season, it seems a little on the high side. I predicted 8.0 in the prediction game and thought he could potentially be 8.5. Didn't see him coming in at 9.0. Looks like Alli and Eriksen are going to be 10.5/11.0 at this rate!

Mayweather will put big money on McGregor and will take a dive.

Then they will do a trilogy of fights and make loads of money of the suckers that buy into their b.s.

I worry it will be like a WWF and it will be strung out for entertainment, even though it's clearly a mismatch. Sorry grapple fans.

Don't get me wrong, I think it will be great entertainment. You've got to think that McGregor will just pile in from the off.

McGregor moves different, comes at different angles, sets traps, utilises distance. Mayweather has never faced a guy like him.

Mayweather is the best against the standard boxers who all move the same. How will he do against a complete different opponent? We'll see

We saw how Tyson Fury danced around Klitchko, all because of his unusual movement.

Lets face it McGregor has won already as he absolutely nothing to lose.. if he gets toyed with so what he ain't even a boxer he'll go back and take it out on all those chumps in UFC and if he catches Floyd sweet with his hand it's lights out however unlikely this is to happen

Keep in mind boxing gloves have a lot more padding than mma gloves. That's significant for two reasons. One, punches are softened and two, it allows guarding of a bigger area

That's his one hope. One lucky KO punch. Anyone can be knocked out with the right punch. But landing that will be very difficult. No proper boxer really ever landed a clean head power shot on him bar Mosley. And McGregor's hands will be slow compared to most top boxers. And Mayweathers ability to block and evade is unbelievable largely due to the guard he uses. And he actually has a chin despite rarely having to show it. But yes, McGregor's size could mean a totally random lucky KO shot is possible if he landed. Everyone can be knocked out and everyone can be beaten by the right style at the right time. Mayweather hasn't fought for a few years and is 40 so he might be slower than he was. But he will still be noticeably faster than McGregor even to the untrained eye

Its like asking who will win a 10k between Mo Farah and Alistair Brownlee.

McGregor might do a bit of boxing mixed with a bit of kicking and a bit of wrestling but Mayweather is a proper boxer.

Any half decent boxer would beat McGregor in a boxing match. Never mind the best boxer since Ray Leonard.

Google MMA v Boxer videos. You soon see there's a massive difference in head movement and combination punching ability as well as speed of punches and ability to evade punches.

McGregor will be boxing a guy who barely even got touched in 49 fights against proper boxers including the likes of Pacquaio, Mosley, Marquez, DeLaHoya, Hatton, Corales, Castillo, Alvarez, Cotto, Juhda.

If McGregor land one clean power punch, he's done well. If he wins a round, it's on a par with Leicester winning the league. If he wins the fight it immediately is by a million miles the biggest upset in sport history.

This is like asking who wins a war between the USA and San Marino

In an MMA fight McGregor would win hands down. That's like asking Farah to race Brownlee in a triathlon. But trust me, McGregor can be as dedicated and mentally and physically prepared as he wants but he has absolutely no chance in a boxing match against a boxer of Mayweathers ability

          1. Sánchez

I would also add, I am not massively educated in mma. That's true. But i do know boxing and this is a boxing match. If you follow boxing you'll be aware of mayweathers weird defence. He uses a different technique to guard himself that other boxers don't use. It nullifies so much in opponents. And he is on a higher level in terms of alertness. YouTube andre berto talking about fighting mayweather. He basically says its just different from other boxers. Its like he is in normal speed and the opponent is in slow motion. He has time to check the clock and is able to avoid a punch, then land his own all in one movement before the opponent even realises what's happened. If you really think McGregor is somethingto behold in mma, thats fair enough, but you simply can't know enough on boxing if you think mayweather wont wipe the floor with a guy who hasn't even boxed as an amateur let alone a pro

So much this. Pacquiao couldn't touch Mayweather (injured shoulder or not). Mayweather can be hit, Ortiz did it, and he is getting older, but I just can't see McGregor doing anything other than hoping he somehow catches Floyd. All this "McGregor moves different, comes at different angles, sets traps, utilises distance" is what they sell to build up the fight. There ain't no trap McGregor is setting that Floyd falls in. He just has to hope Floyd is considering this as an exhibition fight and gets complacent to get in a punch (See the Rahman v Lewis knockout).

I don't think mayweather has that in him. Nobody stays at the top that long without always being dedicated. I'm in no way saying McGregor isn't a good mma fighter but its just not the same thing. Head movement and combinations are the things that matter most in boxing and these are just not the same in mma fighters. Watch videos of McGregor training for this. He just looks robotic and slow as a boxer. You cant be that against a guy who sees everything coming. This will be like Gatti or Corales. Mayweather will just land too many times and that takes its toll. Plus mma dont do 12 rounds. The ref will stop it because McGregor will be getting hit too often and will just become exhausted. The bookies are offering odds on how many punches McGregor will land. They seem to think about 20-25 and chances are they'll be jabs or body shots which do little. The way to get to Mayweather is the way Maidana or Castillo fought him. In close and roughing him up. But those were highly experienced world class boxers with loads of fights in a boxing ring under their belt. Either one of those against a good mma fighter would be far too quick with combinations and headwork for any mma fighter. And neither of those were anything like Mayweather in speed terms. McGregor is getting paid more for this than his entire mma career so he has nothing to lose. Mayweather is getting Pacquiao level money to fight an average amateur level boxer so again, of course he takes that fight.

Just for the captaincy. That's the crucial factor. Will Sanchez be a reliable captain in a Lacazette Arsenal or in a new role for City? There's unknowns with him. Kane is just so settled. So consistent.

I also think Klopp likes him. On the other I can't see where he will play in the team. CM maybe if Hendo isn't fit? Can't see him on the wing as they are fine for those positions. Where do you see him actually playing though?

He'll be classified as a defender imo. In real if he will play LB or not at all

Too many question marks over his minutes at the moment. Assessing pre-season will give us a better idea. But personally, I can tell you I won't be getting him regardless.

This. His minutes are a big question mark. If he was guaranteed pitch time (I rate him much more highly than Hendo who I think is cak) I would get him. On pens and good stats going forward last season.

I think he will be a rotation risk. Robertson due to sign next week but he might be bought as Moreno replacement

Yeah but Milner won't be playing defence anyway even if he is reclassified as a defender. Last season was through necessity.

Yes he will. He wont get a game in midfield

He won't be playing at all then, I fear. Klopp will get a full back so he won't be playing there and as you say, I can't see him getting a game in the midfield. This was kind of my point in the post. I can't see where he will get a game.

It looks like Klopp is signing a stop gap left back this summer and that looks like Robertson. Whether he starts over Milner is debatable. I think he should. Agreed that he might not play much at all in the league

He had better stats than Alonso and Baines

I honestly rate him. If I were Southgate I'd ask him to reconsider retirement and bring him back as a CM and give Hendo the boot.

If he's nailed on and taking penalties for a team that gets a lot of penalties, he's in. But Liverpool should get a new left back.

I agree they will, they have to. Where will Milner play if they do though? Or will he not play at all?

I doubt he'd play with Can, Henderson, Lallana and Coutinho and Wijnaldum around.

Following the Lukaku developments this week, #Chelsea have told Matic to forget about a reunion with Mourinho at Old Trafford. [Mirror]

Nothing like a bit of bitterness between two clubs

I wonder if maybe the base prive for starting defenders is gpong to drop this season. I reasly dont think that a few nailed on 4.0s would be out of order for the newly promoted teams, and McGuire seems a little low to me otherwise.

    Just a gut feeling.

We need another 4.0 hero in defence. I miss the days of Yun Suk-Young and Alan Hutton.

    So at this rate:
    Kane 13.5 - 38 away games
Sanchez 13 - reverse OOP - likely disgruntled

Should affect their defence more than their attack. Minor issue with regards to Kane imo.
