The Numbers Game – Manchester City

Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I wouldn't pick non-starter Rangel. You're actually better picking some random 4.0 so that his value doesn't tank GW1.

Go for Tadic or Redmond instead of Willian with their fixtures and upgrade Rangel.

It all depends on whether you are going to wildcard early or not. If you are, you may as well pick some 4.0 players and max everywhere else as long as those players are nailed. No good if you are going to pick potential non starters though

        Thanks

Rangel is linked to Naughton - i will not be playing Naughton but if he gets injured Rangel will 100% play right back for Swans as he is the only RB in the squad.

I can't bear Tadic/ Redmond after all the hype this time last season 😉

I'm seeing a lot of Lindelof in teams but I really don't think he is nailed. From reading Man U forums Jose is likely to ease him in so I wouldn't say 100% nailed. It's basically Bailey +1 and the other CB could be Blind, Lindelof, Jones, Smalling or Rojo when fit. I could be wrong but I'm not going for him personally. I prefer Kompany who does score a lot of headers, more than any utd def

I've been looking into this a bit. Apparently Mourinho does prefer a left/right footed centreback pairing and Bailly, Blind, Jones and Rojo are all lefties, so that would suggest Lindelof or Smalling on the right.

      1. Malkmus
        • 12 Years

I think long-term it will be Lindelof and Baily in a kind of Rio and Vids tribute band but not sure for the short-term. Apart from pogba, luka, herrera I think it will be hard to pick nailed on utd mids/strikers. Martial/Mikhi/ I will be watching rashford closely, jose loves him and he has been training hard all summer, he's bulking up big time. could have a break-out season.

    3. UnitedFan

Kolasinac because of the reasons Netley said.

Kolasinac because he is a destoyer

Bellerin could equal Kolasinac at least if he plays. If you know that he's nailed then I can understand why it's a tough decision.
Monreal isn't the best at 5.5. In my opinion there are at least 3 better options at that price, perhaps even including Mustafi.

Monreal is good at LCB, but he's a bit less nailed than Kolasinac, too, who I'd imagine might have taken Monreal's spot if only he wasn't a better LWB himself! haha

Actually I think my Monreal reasoning was BS. Bad reasoning, I apologise. But as I think you already feel, the attacking side of Kolasinac's game should still make him better value, and hopefully by some way.

    1. Having a bench with lowest possible value, to free up funds. And to eliminate the problem with benching headache, and possible points missed on bench. Once in a while players get benched and such, then it's a drawback.

    2. Having 3-4 players that can rotate according to fixture/form.

I prefer 1. Much easier. But Maby try 2 defenders to rotate with fix. This season.

Anyone have 2 nice defenders that's cheap, and rotate nice?

      1 x 4.0m keeper (Elliot)
      2 x 4.0m defenders

Touche' - Was gonna hold you to ransom also lol

I'd go Left, Yes Kane is a threat but Trippier over Walker and Willian over Carrol is nice. Alli over Salah is template.

Must be a new thing then! Both playing CBs so would only be interested in Mon if he was playing LWB (hasn't appeared to in first two pre-season games)

You'd expect people to be able to absorb a bit better here. Look at who has played LWB and find out that it's been two youngsters, then realise that that won't continue for long.

RMT - draft 15.44 or something like that...

    Foster
    Cedric McAuley Daniels Trippier
    Phillips Alli KdB
    Jesus Lukaku Lacazette

Bench: Martinez, Tom Carroll, Rangel, Loftus-Cheek

Have to compromise on a weak bench, but have got for a big front line and attacking defenders.

    It's come down to:

    A) 4-3-3 with lindelof

    B) 3-4-3 with ince

Finding it really tough to work out which should be more profitable. Any ideas folks?

How much emphasis do people place on ownership? Surely, in the first few weeks it is sensible to load your team up with the highest owned players, and then make transfers when necessary as per form and fixtures?

    Current team:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Cedric Lindelof Trippier Daniels (Yedlin)
    Coutinho Pogba Alli Redmond T(.Carroll)
    Kane Kaku (Fletcher)

Pick the players you think will score the most points, no point picking Foster for e.g. if you feel he's a bad pick just because everyone else has him

Surely that's a bit yes and no... it depends on how certain you are. If you're not sure which mid is going to excel at the beginning of the season, surely it's better to pick highly owned mids and preserve your rank whilst you gather information in the opening few GWs...

A bit of both. I'm baffled as to why Ramsey is suddenly a good option after him showing nothing but incompetence last season. Underlying stats seem to be making a case for him according to some people but all they tell me is that he misses most of his shots because he's rubbish

I would say so, but others are less sure. Only Arsene knows, but community shield will give a big clue. I am more interested in seeing who play LCB and who plays left WB? I had assumed Kolasinac was bought for his attacking threat.

RMT ... this the best taking preseason so far into consideration ... which may change; also the bench all have good week 2 opponents giving it versatility.
    Foster
TLC line (Trippier Lindy Cedric) and Monreal
    Sane Ramsey Willian Zaha
    Kaku(C) Kane
    Elliott Dunk Fraser Gayle

Actually I believe Dunk and Gayle are quite good and had great week 2 matchups to step in; Brighton had the most cleanies in the championship and Dunk was their star (Mark is getting him); Gayle had the most goals per minutes played and 4th overall and already is off to a great start in preseason; Fraser gets you great cover for Bournemouth versus Wat week 2 although I may go for another 5.5... still looking
